I did this for the first time with the Denman brush last week after watching a video with 4b hair...I washed, squished to condish in the shower then scrunched lightly with a t shirt so not dripping all over me, washed my face and then got out of the shower. Applied my homemade flaxseed gel and then did this technique you just demonstrated with the Denman and Holy CURLS it's like my hair changed over night!!! You all have to try!!! I am estatic!!! It definitely seems like more the technique and not the products to get my hair to curl with minimal frizz...your video should go viral for us wavies your are quickly becoming my fav curly hair you tuber and I just recently found you and subscribed!!!😘😘😘
Thank you. I'm so glad.
Sandra Shirk do you mean 3b or 3a? 4b is natural kinky hair (very kinky)
Yes the you tuber had 4b hair, but the technique works for wavies too 😀
Sandra Shirk sorry, I was just confused 😭 I thought you were taking about your hair, but yeah.
I tried the denman brush recently as well and holy crap it really works! I didn't think it would because I have 2c-3a curls and was afraid it'd straighten my curls. But nope, perfect curls and ringlets even!
This is my favorite method and works well for my wavy fine hair.
This technique looks simple and effective. I look forward to trying it on my 2B hair. I appreciate the options and details as well!
Melanie Davis how did it work? I am going to try this for my 2b waves too.
@@jenmacritchie773 Thanks for asking, Jen! This technique didn't work well for me, I think for a few reasons. First and most significantly, my hair is probably too short, at only chin length. Second, my hair is only moderately dense, so the curl ribbons were either too thin or too broad. Third, even with gel in moderately wet hair, my 2B waves didn't hold their shape well. I tried pinning, as suggested, which did work, but didn't end up looking great with my short hair.
I will definitely try this again when my hair is longer. Please share your results as well!
I use a round brush. SO easy to twist that way! It's like finger coiling, but with a round brush, which eliminates most/all frizz. I do larger sections in the back where it curls more, smaller sections on the top where it curls less. It gives my waves and curls a bit more conformity.
Great video! I figured out how to do this on my own and have never met anyone else that styles their curls like this. I have fine 2c hair so I separate all my clumps and then fluff from within ( hands close to my scalp) to create volume. You have beautiful hair!
Ok, I loved the results that you got with the fine tooth comb (I mean look at those clumps!!) and was honestly super surprised at how quick that was.
I've never tried any of these tools and normally I have to spend 45 mins to 1h 30 just finger coiling my short hair. Usually, I can only get to day three (barely) before my hair is a mess, therefore, it doesn't make sense to spend so much time finger coiling it (so this has given me hope).
Also, I was literally just checking out the Denman brush online and it's almost 20 dollars without shipping so when you showed the fine tooth comb you made my life. Honestly, can't wait for my hair to look s good as yours! :)
I have struggled with frizz for years and no matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of it or keep the definition in my 2c/3a/3b course, dry hair... I tried this and WOW I have ringlets that are totally frizz free. GAME CHANGER.
Advanced warning it takes awhile to do but it's so worth it
I'm so glad it helped!
Best explanation & tutorial on this technique I've seen! Thank you!!!!
Girl that is talent winding that fine tooth comb through your curly hair without having to have it cut out. No can do lol.
Thank you, but really? You probably can!!
Thank you!!!!! I've never seen a Denman brush used like this, before. Trying it tomorrow morning.
You can get them at Sally's beauty supply!
Thank you so much, you are a lifesaver! I'm 2C, but fine and high density, and blunt-cut 20inches long - and even if I can mechanically support my hair long enough for my mousse and/or gel to actually set far sufficiently that it has a fighting chance to hold my spirals against the tension-stretch, the amount of scrunching I have to do to get all the water out means that I get my definition but at the cost of my curls drying soooo stringy that I often just then give up and just brush it all together into a gentler wave. Most of the clumping and finger-coiling often suggested techniques rely on the user having hair much less heavy (when wet) than mine, but this one actually looks achievable.
And thank you also for making me feel like the pinning I sometimes need to do to lend my hair enough support while it dries to keep the curl from stretching out *isn't* somehow "cheating", as I have this weird guilt about; I know it's not like I'm creating a completely artificial texture from wholecloth and styling curls that I don't authentically have - I actually just do my scrunch until the natural pattern emerges, like anyone else does, but then I pick up each skein of that and just accordion it following its own direction, so I really am just pulling it up to take the weight off while it sets - but I have this really strange imposter syndrome about it. So thank you for validating me, and showing me that I'm not alone in pincurling my natural pattern. -lol-
Aww, you're so very welcome. I understand completely!
I pin the clumps that form above my ears because, for some reason, that part of my hair does not curl as nicely as the rest. I say, "No guilt!" If other people have to plop for their curls to set, then I can hold my straighter sections up with a pin. Whatever works, works.
Finally...a different method to try. Thanks!
Great demonstration, I'm looking forward to trying this. :)
I really like this technique especially if I’m trying to style my 2nd day hair and I have to get dressed up or something.
You’re my new hair guru! I think mine is 3b but honestly it’s all over the place depending. Today I pulled top and sides back with a small bun and left the back length hang loose. So because the top and sides were pulled back all day it’s very flat on the crown and because I always twist the bun it has a big wave to it. So that’s like a 2a maybe. But the back that I let hang loose all day is like a 3c or 4a because of humidity today. I nopoo washed it and left a leavein no frizz plus a cream gel and used a t shirt to blot then I plopped my hair into that T-shirt for a few hours and I just took it off. And it’s a uniform spiral but in a bad way. Looks like it could frizz at any moment. There’s no stiff gel cast on the hair. And it’s finally air dried. Planning on plopping it to sleep in ( 1st time) to see if that will help maintain the curl but if it doesn’t clump overnight I’m going to try your finger method of curling like in this video. I only use a super wide tooth comb in the shower with lots of conditioner to detangle. I’m sure if I used a brush or fine toothed comb it would be a mess so thank you for mentioning the other video where you use your fingers to make the curl. I’ll be watching that one next. Thanks again! ( I ramble I know ).
Thank you for the video! I'm transitioning and my top layer of hair doesn't really curl like the bottom 😑
Same. My roots are straight:/
Same here!!! Two months in CG!!
Same! It's been about 2 months full CG and the top layer is finally getting wavy
@@doloresdemar2347 girl I've been on cg for a year now and it's still a problem
Same!
Okay. That was revelatory! Thank you! I saw someone doing this in another video but she didn't explain it and I had no idea if it would work for my hair. Now I feel more confident that I could do it!
Yeah!
I finally caved & just ordered a Denman brush. I hope it works. 🤞
Will try. Thanks
Wow that was amazing 😉- Subscribed - so blessed ....Thank you
Julie
Thanks Anthea I was hoping you would show a demo how to do it from your video the other day
Hi! 🙂 Nice video and you look very good here! Such a cute earings ☺☺😍 and cute little makeup! Loved it! 🙂👍
Great idea love the comb I have shorter layered hair so will see how it works
I love the way you explain how to so things. Thanks so much! Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
Wow that's amazing, I've never seen anything like it!
I will try this in my 2b hair tomorrow morning. I feel the Denman brush separates my waves too much and I end up with skinny, noodle-like curls. I'm going to try to grab fatter sections and see if I like the results better. Thank you!
THANK YOU I will try this right now
Wow this is awesome! Will try that technique next time! So cool!
Thank you I can’t get my hair to clump. I will try this.
Such a nice demonstration!
ooooh, trying this in the morning :) thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much! You're so nice! I can't wait to try the tenique!
Thank you so much for this! I'm definitely trying it next wach day!
Im deep conditioning my hair as we speak and once I rinse off Im going to try that. Thanks
Thank you for doing this video. I can now see how I can use the fine tooth comb and try to get more clumps. Since I have lots of layers still, I will have to take my time for sure. Hopefully it will work for me.
Yes, see how many layers you can get together at once. Hopefully it will still save you time.
Love it! Can’t wait to try it out
queen
Thank you so much for making this video! It's so helpful! What denman brush are you using?
Will have to try that! Thanks.
I tried this and it made my curls almost straight. I'm not sure where I went wrong. Maybe where the clumps didn't stay together well?
Check when you do this technique that you are dividing hair into section so that the curl can form up to the root. And don't pull down too much while turning the brush or it will straighten the curl. It's about trying to curve the clump, shape it, and widen then clump if that makes sense.
Thank you so much for this demonstration - Your hair looks beautiful Athena! Quick question - It doesn’t look as though your hair was soaking (dripping) wet whilst you were demonstrating this technique - did you plop your hair first?
My hair was actually very wet. When I scrunched the first ringlet water came dripping out, but that was just as the camera cut. Then later as I did the ringlets again they weren't dripping anymore but still wet.
that is AMAZING!
Another great video!! Athena, do you have products (gel, cream) in your hair before you use the comb? Thank you ☺️
I didn't use any product this time. Maybe just a little left over leave-in conditioner. It turned out nicely for me like in the thumbnail photo.
The back of my hair doesn't curl so I'll try doing this
Remember to lift up and away at the root area first for best results.
What if you don't use a diffuser? Can you let it air dry and will it still work?
Absolutely. If your hair needs heat though to hold curl then instead of using heat you can scrunch the curls up and pin then in place while they are dry. This will help them to shrink up really well.
Excellent video, Athena. I'm going to try this on my 2B hair. What type of product would you suggest applying before using this technique? Gel? I know you said you had no product in your hair, but I need something to help it hold. Thank you!
J Flo - I’m glad you asked this question - Like you, I’d love to try this technique but I will definately need product to help my hair hold! X
Definitely. Use my Priming Serum to replace water or my Custom Carbomer Gel. Find on my website. www.NoFrizz10.com
Would love to try this, but my hair curls in different directions. Any suggestions?
Ya, don't worry about it. This trick forces the hair to go the way you want! ;) Just try it. It makes curls form perfectly and cooperate. Lol.
Hi Athena, how do you determine which direction to twirl the brush? Is it a matter of looking at the curl and being sure to follow the direction it seems to be going already? And do you twirl in the same direction for all your clumps? Thank you!
Unless you have a cowlick, you should be able to manipulate the wet hair to curl any direction you desire. Sometimes it is a matter of deciding which direction to curve based on a certain style that you want, but usually I find that curling forward gives the most volume and seems to make it look curlier too.
And how to make them clumping less but keep definition?
If frizz develops as you pull apart curls then do this with a little bit of curl cream, gel, or oil on your fingers at the same time. This way, it will smooth and seal any frizz down as you style.
will this work with permed hair ?
Hello Athena! This is a very helpful video - I was trying to find cheap alternative hacks to the Denman.
I stay in a humid place and homemade flaxseed gel is an absolute must for me.
Do you suggest applying the gel after the clumping technique or before?
I suggest applying products before.
Oh, and a Denman brush substitute can be a simple fine tooth comb.
What about for men? My top curls aren't forming the curl
Do you have Facebook? Find me at NoFrizz10
How does it dry? Do you defuse? You need to show how your hair looked after it dried...just saying....
Drying method is personal, different for everyone. And the thumbnail shows the after.
Athena Padilla but: is it the result the same, if you diffuse or air drying?
@@chiarad7633 using this technique gives the same result for any drying method. If you diffuse you'll likely get a little more shrinkage though.
@@AthenaPadilla I get less shrinkage when I diffuse.
Pixie diffuse or Hover diffuse?
I’m confused, you didn’t use any gel?
FibroFancyNancy she didn’t but you can. I use gel and a cream.
Coloca legendas em português por favor, seu cabelo é lindo (:
Ok. Vou tentar o meu melhor
I cannot get a comb thru my hair like that. It's not working for me.
Put a detangler on it first and make sure it's very wet.
Jaimolynn detangle your hair first
Can you do this with wide tooth comb ?
Use a fine tooth comb. It will grab more hair, keeping everything smooth and uniform and change the direction of the curls better.
i don’t know why i can’t figure out this technique but i keep getting my hair tangled on my comb or getting no curl
at all :(((
Send me a video clip in my private messenger on Facebook and I will help you!
I think you need to wet more along with leave in conditioner
Your so cute
How do you know the type of curls you have? 2b, 3b, etc.?
There are lots of charts online that show examples of each curl type. Type 1 is straight hair. Type 2 is waves. 2c is defined S curves. 3a are ringlets the size of side walk chalk. The higher the number the tighter/smaller the curl.
@@AthenaPadilla OK, thank you.
I've watched your video about 10 times but CAN'T get my hair to curl that way! You must be a magician! Mine ends up being basically really tightly swirled but straight
Pull outward a bit before turning to widen the curl. Let me know if that helps.
And don't put too much tension pulling down from the top. You may need to steady the curl by pinching it near the top with your other hand.
