My hat's off to the bassist. It takes a high level of taste and restraint to play only simple things firmly, in the midst of virtuosi running incredible techniques; without trying to "compensate upward" to run with them. Rick Laird, from Mahavishnu Orchestra, was great at this; his patience and focus were truly profound. This gentleman here is very close to Laird's level. Well done.
And he's absolutely a virtuosic bassist in his own right, but his greatest skill is knowing and perfectly maintaining his place in a song. But he can totally turn it up to 11 when the need arises.
Studio version = Chills down my spine and goosebumps up and down my arm Live version = all of the above plus the tears that ran down my face. Gojira truly are such an amazing and powerful group.
This is incredible. Joe's voice is on point, it is evolving, he is now a master of clean singing, it is powerful and emotional. His growl voice has changed since Magma, and I am diggin' it so hard. Incredible performance, shivers down my spine.
I'm 26 and now that I have a son, the lyrical content of this song hits so much deeper than I could even explain. I come to this when I need to feel like the world is bigger than my problems and perspective for how I'll raise my son in today's world. I love you Gojira 🤘
You have gotta hear The Ascent by Caligua's Horse, then. Those lyrics are about the singer passing the torch of experiencing life to his daughter. Like this song, I'd place that one very high on my list of most important songs I know. Congrats on the kid, I hope he has a happy life

Everything from his ride technique to his kick technique...I could fanboy on Mario for hours

@@wayde5545 You unedited comment was "4000 years? Someone please explain. Are they Christians, or maybe scientologists?" To answer the question, as far as I know it's neither. I highly doubt they're scientologists, because it would've been shoved down our throats to join over & over again by now. As for being Christians? There are christians that don't go along with the normal Bible's creation story. Instead you have the Big Bang happening 13.8 billion years ago, the Earth was created 4.5 billion years ago. But the one who created the universe & everything in it was 'God'. As for the significance of 400,000 years, that would be that it is theorised that the Homo sapiens species (Us) diversified from our evolutionary ancestors & became our own species around this time. There's a lot of talk about "the missing link" between the ancient proto-humans & what eventually became us. We haven't found the remains of what links our theorised ancestral species & the species that eventually became us. This is something that deniers of the Theory of Evolution like the latch on to & insert conspiracy theories, religious explanations, or like in this example, suggest that there may have been outside interference by an intelligent species.
@@TheLonelyBrit I think the 400.000 years references panspermia, basically that life came frome somewhere else in the universe and landet on earth some time ago. 400.000 years is more of a placeholder.

To the band members of GOJIRA.. when I learned of you was soon after the death of my father.. Vacuity was the first song I heard after his passing on Pandora of all applications. After the first listen through I was hooked. I immediately opened UA-cam and played it again about a million times. No one can tell me how 🥰 I’ve made it SO far.. nobody understands how and I don’t expect them to but everyone has their own meaning in life; mission, goal, the end result is what matters most and you’ll never understand until you allow that river to flow. I apologize for the series of puns but to everyone their own understanding of the flip side of life. I love you all. does this song make anyone else kinda emotional? not exactly sure why, i guess the lyrics are part of it but the other part is the first time I heard this song was the day my granddad died. the "we will see our children growing" part is beautiful too
My eyes do get watery every time I hear this version of the song. You're not the only one. Especially when Joe sings, "I hold my inner child within and tell him not to cry..."
I have been interested in climate change, global warming, and environmental issues (pollution, biodiversity...), since the end of the 90s. At that time, nobody among my relatives (family, friends) felt concerned by this. They considered me as an anxious teenager. When I discovered this band in 2005 (From Mars to Sirius album), I was totally amazed that a metal band (a French one, and a very talented one, moreover!) could write a song about global warming at the time. Almost 20 years later, I am a father of 2 children, and the lyrics of this song seem even more meaningful to me. I discovered then that many of Gojira songs talk about environment, future of our planet and humankind. Gojira is not only one of the best metal bands right now, but they were also pathfinders 20 years ago. PS : Please forgive my bad English, I am French, and my level in English is much weaker than Joe Duplantier ;)
I've never cried over a song this hard before. The guitar, the vocals, everything. They all work together so well and put to much emotion into the song
I keep coming back to this video all over again. I can't do anything else than respect and admire the skill of this whole band. Especially Mario and Joe, I just love how you can see the way they feel the music. Just amazing.
My favourite song by far! But I can’t just listen to that song on its own...I feel ‘the fall’ after it is like an extended part of this song and they go so well together🤓👍🏻
I was literally blocks away in my apartment when this happened. I wonder wtf I was doing at that moment. For no other reason than curiosity. It's so weird to think that greatness is happening so close.
Mesmerizing music. And I love the fact that they focus on real problems, Metal is is more than just blasphemy and hate. Music and education is the power of knowledge!!! We are more than just humans surviving in this world.
Yeah I think perhaps too many people out there who don't usually consumed metal music get the impression that most if not all metal music is just black metal from wanna be edgelords featuring unintelligible vocals and and lyrics focused on death, etc. Metal may not be mainstream enough to get radio play like the billboard's top 100 but there are a lot of great metal acts out there that don't conform to those kind of stereotypes.
I listen to these guys pretty regularly now, but what you like about them is what I hate. I don't need life lessons from my metal music. Save the water carrying for the system. These lyrics are like listening to hall monitors with drop tuned guitars in the background.

Rick Laird, from Mahavishnu Orchestra, was great at this; his patience and focus were truly profound. This gentleman here is very close to Laird's level. Well done.
Yes!!! Jean -Michel doesn't get the credit he deserves I think. He is an awesome bassist. Thanks for pointing that out!
And he's absolutely a virtuosic bassist in his own right, but his greatest skill is knowing and perfectly maintaining his place in a song. But he can totally turn it up to 11 when the need arises.
This ghost notes may be haunting the studio till this day!
"We never play this live as it is challenging" /proceeds to rip off a flawless performance. You guys make it look easy. So Awesome
Opolis notice it’s cut kinda short before the outro
Francis Marceau not only on guitar but the drums as well, especially esoteric surgery
ThaTruth223 The ghost notes are fucking a torment too play lmao
Absolutely love Mario.
It’s a fun song to play on guitar. But rhythmically it’s challenging
Francis Marceau dude born in winter kills my hands every time with the tapping
Studio version = Chills down my spine and goosebumps up and down my arm
Live version = all of the above plus the tears that ran down my face.
Gojira truly are such an amazing and powerful group.
Never seen them live, but will aug.18th in Stl..cant wait, best metal/heavy band out right now

This is incredible. Joe's voice is on point, it is evolving, he is now a master of clean singing, it is powerful and emotional. His growl voice has changed since Magma, and I am diggin' it so hard. Incredible performance, shivers down my spine.
certainly a different sound, luckily while others musicians loose something, this still sounds pleasant.
a blessing for us
Hockyy Changed since Magma? It’s still a new album, more or less
K9 Rootless yes but i feel like it has changed and Joe is mastering it more and more
Hockyy i wouldn't say he's a "master of clean vocals" they sound pretty good, but it's not like he's Freddie Mercury or something! XD
KuBaYa well it is my opinion ahah
I'm 26 and now that I have a son, the lyrical content of this song hits so much deeper than I could even explain. I come to this when I need to feel like the world is bigger than my problems and perspective for how I'll raise my son in today's world. I love you Gojira 🤘

@@keagan0000 this song is about humans damaging the Earth and which causes global warming slowly the World will end one day due to this
You have gotta hear The Ascent by Caligua's Horse, then. Those lyrics are about the singer passing the torch of experiencing life to his daughter. Like this song, I'd place that one very high on my list of most important songs I know. Congrats on the kid, I hope he has a happy life
Good for you bro! You will see your children growing!
Joe is amazing. He has the most emotional voice I've ever heard in metal music. He gives me goosebumps!
I know this is late but you should look up Devin Townsend - Deadhead(live), it's fucking enthralling
I love both. But Devin Townsend is on a whole new level for any vocalest honestly. Almost godlike.

Jean Michel holding down the groove like no other. Honestly one of the best bassists in metal. So much energy during shows too.
Best metal band in history. Most innovative band. Musicianship. Heavy. Influential. I just can't explain how I feel when I listen to Gojira...and then you have videos like this. I'm just so grateful I can enjoy them. Thank you, Gojira.
I completely agree.
KC Deportes Most elitists would never put them among the classics, but i dont give a shit. One of the best bands ever.
Lightbringer They sound heavier than your favorite band will ever sound. No band I've seen has the low end and the tightness Gojira has. Elitists in 2018 are a dying breed fortunately.
I actually slightly mis-read this, i wouldn't agree that they're the best in history, i think that's too subjective. They are brilliant though.
The Batman And that's how it should be. YOU enjoy a band/whatever. YOU are feeling. That's the important thing.
This song is the perfect conclusion for the perfect album. Thanks for this gift, this performance made me cry

Jamming along this feels like you're with them. Can't describe the feeling, but its the same every time
Mario can drum such fast, heavy, hard hitting, complex patterns but what separates him from the rest is how fucking fluidly he puts it all together. Its poetry in motion. He just floats across the kit, its like the drum set is an extension of his body. Everything just sounds so natural and human. Everything from his ride technique to his kick technique...I could fanboy on Mario for hours

4:38 I love the bass at this part, it's kinda like it's singing "we will see our children growing" before Joe does.
The bass plays that in the intro as well, or a slight variation of it. I love how Gojira foreshadows and contextualizes like that. Makes each song feel complete and well thought out.
THANK GOD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THINKING THIS BASS IS SINGING!!!
But i will be the only one hearing Joe Duplantier singing when i hear the Riff at the very beginning..
Haha, you're right! Cannot un-hear it now either.
YEAH I GUESS THAT WAS THE POINT OF COMPOSING IT LIKE THAT
The bass does a little foreshadowing of the coming melody change and I love it.
The endurance that drummer has is insane
he does constant double bass for 1 hour straight every day
he used to, that's how he got to where he is, eh?
The more technique, the less sweat
It's the vegetarian diet.
I think just holding that open string hammer on/pull off with guitar perfectly all day while singing and hardly looking at the guitar is just nuts. That repetitive motion with little movement really tenses your fingers out lol.
Wow merci Gojira pour la vidéo !
Franchement, j'en ai encore eu les larmes aux yeux 😭 cette chanson est incroyable, votre jeu est fou, la mise en scène est folle... Carton plein à toutes les équipes ! 🤘🏻
Lyrics:
Four hundred thousand years ago
They came from outer space
And gave us life here
We are taking everything for granted
I don't think we should do this now
And when I see the smoke all around
I feel like I'm now
From humankind down there
I feel like glaciers are my eyes
And mountains are my head
My heart is ocean
And I feel all alone
Because everybody's wrong
I feel the living
What is this thing that we call hate
And that's inside of me
Get out of here!
A world is down
And none can rebuild it
Disabled lands are evolving
My eyes are shut, a vision is dying
My head explodes
And I fall in disgrace
I hold my inner child within
And tell him not to cry
"don't fear the living"
One day you will stand as a king
And now fear can erase
This light below us
Each one of us is now engaged
This secret we all have
This truth is growing
And as a warrior I have to fight
I can already feel
The love I'll discover
I had this dream, our planet surviving
The guiding stars always growing
And all the worlds
The fates all the countries
They're all rebuilding at the same time
I never fell and always believed in
We could evolve and get older
Open your eyes and let all this flow
Now see a now hope is growing inside
We will see our children growing
Enjoy :)

400 000 years ago? Someone please explain.
@@wayde5545 You unedited comment was "4000 years? Someone please explain. Are they Christians, or maybe scientologists?"
To answer the question, as far as I know it's neither.

I’ve already been given a lack of information throughout my lifetime that blinded me. Thank you so much for opening my 3rd eye and saving my life. Since then I’ve bought most of your music and plan to have everything you guys make. You guys are amazing. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 THIS IS EXACTLY What the world needs right now. Sometimes another voice to think for someone else to learn from so others can take action rather than feel like they should speak up; the time for action is now. If you guys read this.. a name you should use for a future song is “nyarlethotep” or “god of 1000 faces”

I still can't be grateful enough to the day I found about these guys 2 years ago! This band has changed the way I feel about music.
Drake Parker I'd give it to Iron Maiden.
Drake Parker I love gojira, but this would be tough, I’d either give it to between the buried and me, Periphery, the contortionist, or gojira

N0peD0pe I mean subjective taste is a thing so any band can be hated, even Gojira. This said holy shit was this good! The end was insane with that extra addes parts!
I don't hate them. But I don't like them. That's the reality of subjective taste. Are they bad? Hell no.

does this song make anyone else kinda emotional? not exactly sure why, i guess the lyrics are part of it but the other part is the first time I heard this song was the day my granddad died. the "we will see our children growing" part is beautiful too
Only heartless people don't get emotional listening to this song
The whole song is pure emotion
Nah you’re not the only one this song is so beautiful
I expect to cry when I play this one.

Real Band, Real Heart, Real Music.
The older I get, the more I appreciate and understand the meaning in their lyrics. I will never love a group more than Gojira.
"More than human surviving in this world" I hope so
One of the many reasons why i love this band. They're socially minded as it should be
Yeah I think perhaps too many people out there who don't usually consumed metal music get the impression that most if not all metal music is just black metal from wanna be edgelords featuring unintelligible vocals and and lyrics focused on death, etc.
Metal may not be mainstream enough to get radio play like the billboard's top 100 but there are a lot of great metal acts out there that don't conform to those kind of stereotypes.
this would be a relevant topic on this video if global warming were an actual issue.
I listen to these guys pretty regularly now, but what you like about them is what I hate. I don't need life lessons from my metal music. Save the water carrying for the system. These lyrics are like listening to hall monitors with drop tuned guitars in the background.
I listen to this song every morning before getting to work for almost two weeks. Its getting better with every listening
i can exactly feel this struggle every morning but gojira helps me to deal with this fucked up feelings
That drum pattern is like a modern day Rosanna. Timeless. Perfect.
