    Wonderful presentation! Thank you. Brought back a lot of great memories! I grew up in that region in the mid & late '70's, Sandpoint & Bonners Ferry to the north. Have had a life long passion for the mighty Burlington Northern RR.... Really dislike the color change since they merged with Santa Fe. Also truly miss seeing a caboose on each train as well.

      I still think the BN green, black and white was the best looking railroad paint scheme post 1970. Nothing looked better on an E or F-unit, maybe a tie for first was Rio Grande speed lettering on hood diesels. I spent a week camping at a spot just a few miles northwest of Sandpoint in the summer of 1980. Listening throughout the nights there surrounded by the sounds of all the BN and UP trains when all three lines were still in use - the old NP through the east side of the town and over the lake, UP on the old SI, which was still running right through downtown and over Sand Creek on a big old wood trestle, and the old GN mainline west of the town, still with mainline freights heading to and from Hillyard in Spokane.

    Sandpoint to Spokane is now fully double track with the addition of the new viaduct over the lake. I rode the Empire Builder from Chicago to Sandpoint several decades ago on Amtrak in the mix ' match, pre-Superliner era. Dome car all the way. What a fun trip for a teenager.

    I like to watch rails in the morning. To remind me everyday of the importance of our rail system. We would be nothing without it!

    Doesn't look much different than 2024...until you see the locomotives that have since been retired or sent elsewhere. Less Dash 9's than 10 years ago, the MACs are a lot harder to find (most in this video probably sit in storage), BNSF 2914 is now a Watco unit. GP60B 327 sits in a Topeka deadline, too.

    Makes me wish I lived closer to the Funnel. Maybe, I wouldn't be able to go there all the time, but at least once in a while. I live Southeast of Seattle, and it's a day's drive from here.

    Hey Aaron, do I see future trips out to the Funnel with the majority of the line being now all double track, some crossings eliminated out in the Valley & a 2nd bridge over Lake Pend Orielle now open, do I see a Funnel Part 2?

    What's the purpose of those buffer cars on the oil train? Operations at the shipper or consignee is my guess.

    • @MrDgwphotos
      @MrDgwphotos 7 місяців тому +2

      Protection for the crew against an accident. I believe they are often loaded with sand.

    • @MrDgwphotos
      @MrDgwphotos 7 місяців тому +3

      That's why there is one at each end of the train between engines and the actual oil cars. BNSF uses proper sand cars, but MRL uses modified boxcars for the Gas Local.
