I grew up in West Virginia. It was a great place to grow up. Wonderful communities to raise your children. Had a great childhood running threw those mountains and riding my bike.
My father watched your trip and he loved it. Very good trip. He calls it going on a trip. He watches a lot of them and really enjoys them. Thank you for taking him along 😂. He's 95 years old.
Not only have I rafted the New River under the bridge several times, I’ve also crossed the river on the catwalk under the bridge..great photos from there😎
Thank you for visiting my beautiful state! If you want to go on another scenic drive, start in Wardensville and head west on state route 48 (A.K.A. Corridor H) into Davis. Some of the most beautiful mountain vistas and scenery I have ever seen. Even better, do it in mid-October when all of the trees are changing colors.
I was born and raised in Nitro WV. Have lots of childhood Memories growing up there, and I love meeting my grandfather at the coal mines when it was time to get off. What I really miss is the 4 season we had at home. I live in New Orleans now it's ok, but I want to go home.
I was born and raised in a small town in West Virginia near beckley. My dad was a Coal miner, so glad you took the time to show that history. It has the best people and the most beautiful scenery anywhere.
Almost Heaven, West Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.. Life is old there, older than the trees Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze...... Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain mama
A friend of mine was a steel worker and he helped build the New River Gorge Bridge. The New River runs north. It is the second oldest River in the world
What a hard life, To be working under ground, and to go to work every day and hope and pray that you'll get back to fresh air and family. So much of the time it was generations of mining past on father to son. It was a time of different and I think better values. Things never stay the same, constantly changing. West Virginia is beautiful. Thank you for the view.
As a child we once vacationed in Myrtle Beach, thus leaving us traveling I-77 South from Cleveland to South Carolina. It was such a backroad experience that my father said, "Never again." In time I-77 was improved and my parents enjoyed Myrtle Beach many times in their retirement. I happen to enjoy traveling the backroads, through small towns, and seeing the beauty of mother nature.
They have drastically changed 77. I live close to Statesville NC. Where I77 and I40 interchange. They have built big 4 leaf clover bridges and changed it to 3 lanes. We travel to MB often also.
In 1994 on Bridge Day I rappelled from the walkway under the deck down 750 feet. It was in October and the fall colours made the most spectacular view that was divided by the river with the railways running down east side of the river. Rappelled down twice that day. An amazing memory.
I drive roundtrip from Orlando to Pittsburgh twice a year. I love driving through West Virginia and often take scenic routes for the adventures. West Virginia is beautiful and has fantastic views! Thanks for sharing.
@@charliehenderson38 I miss certain things about West Virginia but it’s just too bland, not enough diversity for me…the people are friendly though & I miss that about West Virginia, it really was nice to live there for 2 years but growing up in Norfolk & Virginia Beach made moving to West Virginia like going back in time 40 years or so , I just hope they don’t build up too much there making it like most other places but even Charleston & Huntington WV are very country like but to the locals they call it the big city 🤣🤣 even the Meth addicts I worked with in a warehouse was nice guys. 👍
Watching these videos made me so home sick for being back on the road. I bought an RV several years ago and drove cross country...traveled and worked remote for about a year and a half.. got sick during covid and had to sell the RV...now looking forward to getting a converted van and getting back on the road by next year... nothing like driving around the country and exploring different places! Just love your videos!
Thank you for taking us on an interesting & informative tour with you. We are in Victoria Australia & probably would never has seen or known about these parts of America. So thank you & safe travels
I lived in West Virginia for the first nine years of life (born in Welch, lived in Elbert). Very fond memories! Dad worked in the coal mines for 50 years, from ages 16 to 66.
Sorry I missed your video yesterday. I'm not getting notifications. But I wanted to Thank you for the West Virginia drive. Most UA-camrs avoid West Virginia because of the mountains. It's nice that you weren't afraid of them. As a life long born and raised and Proud Hillbilly I'm very Proud of our history and our land. God Bless
The reason there are so many ATV's on the road is because of the Hatfield and McCoy Trails system in southern WV. There are like 500-600 miles of trails available to ride in like five different trail systems in southern WV. People come from all over to the ride the trails and spend sometimes weeks here riding the trails. They often bring their RV's and camp at ATV resorts. People come from surrounding states and states even further away. The trails bring in a lot of tourism. It's a nationally known trail system.
A few bit's: Steve Harvey grew up in Welch. Bob Denver (Gilligan) Retired In the Princeton area and later died there. My father's side is from this area. As a kid he would visit. Granny lived in a house that was heated by a coal stove and wood stove in the kitchen for cooking. Best times of my life.
I live 8 miles from Bluefield, WV. My husband and I were looking for UA-cams to watch that were made out west. We really enjoyed seeing your video of Southern WV. We even said if we had known you were coming thru, we would have welcomed you and given you a tour, maybe even a home-cooked meal. Thanks for sharing our beautiful state. PS. New River Gorge Bridge is painted a rusty color to "blend" with the environment. I wish it was painted blue and yellow.
Actually as I recall the bridge, and I watched it being built, is cor-ten, a steel that oxidizes and forms a protective paint like coating, so it does not require painting.
I am from West Virginia and moved back for retirement. I probably won’t visit a lot of places. Thanks for taking me along on your video tour. It’s almost like being there. The video/audio quality on today’s cameras is amazing.
Thank you for this. You took me back to my native home of West Virginia. Growing up there was a delight. You do a great deal of good for people transporting them back on these roads of memories. I'm disabled now, a decades-long resident of South Carolina. This way I can visit home again. Thank you so much.
I wish you'd of been aware of and discussed WV Bridgeday. Every year in September people come from around the world to parachute off the New River Gorge Bridge. You should have driven down the gorge and seen the bottom of bridge from the old bridge. It's an amazing drive. I enjoyed the trip with you, even though this is my home and I did grow up here up one of these hollers, ( which you refer to as canyons). Ha!
I am from Virginia and I have done a lot of work in West Virginia and the people are the nicest people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. And know matter where you look in West Virginia your always going to see a mountain
Thank you for taking us on this journey. It was always mine and my late husband's dream to take a trip to Virginia and West Virginia and ride the back roads but we never got to make it. He became sick and ended up passing away before we could. That building you stopped to look at in Itmann was featured in another UA-camr's video. They live up in Virginia and travel to a lot of these places.
Thank you for taking us all along on this trip! You filmed parts of the state we haven’t seen, and finished with a familiar hike at the New River Gorge. The bonus for us is that you went all the way down those 178 steps - and back up! We gave up less than halfway down when we were there a few years ago, but now we feel like we’ve finished that trek. I pulled out our selfie to compare, and got to relive our own journey.
I was born and raised in Arizona. Been a dream of mine for some time to move to West Virginia. I love small towns and the countryside. Hopefully one day my dream will come true! Awesome video!
Thank you for being so kind to West Virginia! I live here born and raised, I can’t show you here but I have one of the coins the way the Coal Miners were paid, my Mom kept it in her coin collection! Bless you on your travels!
I'm so glad you were able to share southern West Virginia and enjoyed your time there. Please come around anytime. The welcome mat is always out for our Uncle RVer.
A lot of small towns or communities are built near the road. That's usually where the land is flattest. It's easier to build down near the road then up in the hillier areas. The roads were usually built in the valleys near the bottom, where the rivers and creeks were. Again because it was flat. Railroads were most often built there too. No roads up on the hillsides or not as many. It's like that all over WV because the whole state is covered with hills. The lay of the hills isolated the towns and made road construction expensive.
We just finished watching this video. Just found your channel yesterday. We were particularly interested in this video because we've been to the New River gorge bridge. Thought I'd pass on a couple of fun facts about the New River that I didn't hear mentioned. 1. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world. 2. Out of the hundreds of thousands of rivers on our planet, the New River is one of less than a hundred that flow from South to North. I'd also like to add that, on the 3rd Saturday in October, there is a New River Gorge Bridge Jump Day where base jumpers will jump off the bridge. Maybe you should plan another trip, where you can kill 2 birds with one stone. That should also be right about peak season to see the areas Fall tree colors. 😀 Loving the channel and looking forward to watching more of your vids.
McDowell County where Welch West Vorginia is,the county back in 1950 had a population of around 100,000 in it's coal mining heyday, now the population stands at around 17,000,a big reason why there are so many empty buildings with some that nature is taking over now.I grew up Clarksburg West Virginia (I live in Florida now)but that's in the north central part closer to the Pennsyvania line, that downtown reminds me of Bluefied with all the tall old buildings.
Really enjoyed this video except gorge bridge. Quite terrified of bridges. Loved ride through WV. Much history and yet sad to see so many building closures assuming from loss of mining. Hopefully some new industries will help this beautiful state.
My grandparents Harley and dessie brown from Pemberton wv received a plack from the governor of West Virginia as being the oldest couple in wva to ever walk all the way across the new river gorge bridge on bridge day which that has been over 20 years ago I'm proud to say I'm from wva myself and my grandparents that used to live in Pemberton wva before they passed away set a record on bridge day and will always be remembered for what they did
West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in my opinion. It makes me so sad to see all of these historic buildings left behind to fall into ruins. Wish they could be restored and preserved. Thanks for the back road trip through WV. Great job! 👏
The bridge did look as if it could do with some paint ! But in the description / data board , it said it was " Cor-Ten " steel , which makes its own rust- coloured coating , so it doesn't need painting. Neat ! 😊. 🇬🇧😊🌲⭐🌿🦉🌈🇬🇧
Could just imagine how beautiful and serene West Virginia would have been during the 1800s & early 1900s..."Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue ridge Mountains...John Denver'.
Thanks so much for showing our wonderful state. You need to come back for each season. We have 4 distinct seasons here. Fall is magnificent. Come on back. Knock on any door and tell them you would love some biscuits and gravy and they can hook you up
Thank you soooo much for taking us on the ride with you, I’m scared of heights and therefore can’t drive across mountains or bridges without suffering a huge panic attack but you’ve made it possible for me to enjoy the beautiful scenery like I was there myself ❤
Itmann is where my 81 year old mother is from. That building use to be the coal camp company store in the 1940s before being a rehab place. The coal camps are located behind the store where the coal companies families lived.
What an awesome video my granddaughters live in West Virginia and that is why i watched it really was amazed by the old buildings especially Itmann what beautiful architecture they knew how to design them.
On several occasions during my high school and college years we traveled to the New River and rafted down the river. Great Trip. I recently learned that the area had become a national park. Definitely a place that is on my list of things to do. You can actually do a tour/hike under the surface of the bridge. We will have to see about that one.
Beautiful, i live and work in NC but i have a home in Quinwood WV, it's SO quiet there it's like sleeping in heaven, not even mail delivery. I have a friend in Beckley, Quinwood is down Rt 64 Sandstone Mountain, my home is one of a few with a driveway so yes many have on street parking, some areas and former businesses in shambles after the coal mining slowed down. Hatfield and McCoy trails are super popular there and people come from all over to ride them. Welch had a SERIOUS flood many years ago. This Country gives billions to illegals who never paid a penny in taxes but LOTS of those people there have hard lives barely making ends meet and they work, shameful in my opinion.
My mother grow up in Oak Hill, my oldest brother was born in Oak Hill, and I live with my grandmother and went half my junior year of high school Oak Hill. Road are very narrow and curve. Old fashion people but friendly and most go to church. It was fun roll down hills in summer and sled down in winter. The New River Gorge Bridge they shut down 1 side every year and let people walk across, bungy jump off of. They even had people get married and jump. Not sure if still do. I have lot family around Oak Hill, Beckley, Fayetteville, Mt. Hope areas.
I have Family living in West Virginia and some years ago my Son and His Wife were able to Visit and they Loved it They visited Myrtle Beach and many more places and have some Wonderful Memories. God Bless My Husband's Family. I think of you Often ❤️❤️❤
The one community you went to where you pulled off the road to film the houses on the hill was Keystone. When you passed the big building on the left that area was called Cinder Bottom. It was known throughout the world as a place where there were numerous brothels and beer joints. Apparently it was a thing for miners and others to go to Cinder Bottom for a good time and lose their money.
I'm watching this video in Cairns Australia while waiting for a tropical cyclone to pass. It is very entertaining and informative. I watch a lot of road trips and this is one of the best.
They really have expanded what used to be the Beckley Exhibition mine. At one point in my career in the 70s I did some geologic mapping and a lot of underground coal sample collection. More recently I did some of the latest geologic maps of Park Service properties. During the first period I lived in Rainelle east of the bridge on US 60. I watched the bridge being built and ultimately dedicated. One point most do not realize is coal markets can be divided into two segments Metallurgical and capable of being coked and steam coal for power generation. The New River and Pocahontas coal fields are somewhat different in that they do a specific gravity separation and the lighter coal becomes metallurgical and the heavier becomes steam coal. The metallurgical fraction is literally some of the best in the world and the steam coal is still very low sulfur. That is why it is mostly gone. The bridge is self protecting cor-ten steel that never needs to be painted and never has been. It was that color when delivered.
I worked in west Virginia for about 1 year. The most beautiful place I've ever been. Also the people there were super friendly. Wish I would have moved there permanently.
🙋♀Hello Russ! I loved the ride up 77N to Beckley 19N onto 79N when traveling to Pittsburgh since I was 16. Beautiful scenery, especially in the Fall. The New River Gorge Bridge Festival is really nice to see. People come from all over the world to jump off this bridge with their parachutes. As fast as they jumped off was as fast as the next bus load unloaded & they'd jump. Looking down at the people were floating on inner tubes. They closed the N bound lanes down during the festival. It was neat! This video was beautifully done Russ! Have a good week!👍
Really enjoying your videos.never been to WV but heard it was beautiful. Appalations are something else . I'm in Mississippi..if you never been thru the Natchez Trace you should visit .all the beautiful Historic antebellum home.just awesome .
The steel the bridge is made of is made to rust and then the rust creates a barrier to further corrosion and doesn't penetrate the steel. That's why it looks like that.
I got lost in the northern border of W Virginia when a big storm knocked out GPS. It sent me through some beautiful areas with large horse ranches and vineyards. Then through the scenic mountain areas. There were a lot of very rural small towns. It took hours and hours to get to the regular highway. Many retired people must have lived there because there was nothing else around for miles on end. No where to work or shop. No gas stations either. A little scary since most of the way I had no GPS or phone service. I followed one big truck that seemed also lost. He actually waved bye when we got to the regular road. 😅 I can’t wait to actually return to the first part of that road, the vineyard and horse ranches area. It was right out of the capital. Different than all the cole mine towns.

A few years ago (pre-lockdown) we visited the coal mine and the bridge. I see that we missed a lot by staying on the major roads.
My aunt and uncle used to live in front of Bob Denver his house was on a small hill. I was visiting them, and I saw him on his porch.
I was probably 5 when the family went to West Virginia. I'd like to go back to Morgantown, as my mom was born there. Thanks for taking us along, Russ.
But in the description / data board , it said it
was " Cor-Ten " steel , which makes its own rust- coloured
coating , so it doesn't need painting.
Neat ! 😊.
BEAUTIFUL WEST VIRGINIA GREW UP IN DANVILLE VIRGINIA ❤❤❤
Wonderful travels, very interesting your trips, I really enjoyed every one very much. Regards from Greece
To Cool For SCHOOL, Driving Thru The Mountain today, with RVerTV Russ. 👍
Itmann is where my 81 year old mother is from. That building use to be the coal camp company store in the 1940s before being a rehab place. The coal camps are located behind the store where the coal companies families lived.
Hi russ thanks for the tour its great seeing small towns an the beautiful old buildings. Cheers mate🇦🇺
Hello, RVerTV Russ, Thanks for today's Journey 👍
What an awesome video my granddaughters live in West Virginia and that is why i watched it really was amazed by the old buildings especially Itmann what beautiful architecture they knew how to design them.
Very nice beautiful place of Verginya USA. Thanks.
On several occasions during my high school and college years we traveled to the New River and rafted down the river. Great Trip. I recently learned that the area had become a national park. Definitely a place that is on my list of things to do. You can actually do a tour/hike under the surface of the bridge. We will have to see about that one.
There's free cabins to stay in all along the Appalachian trail. 4 wheeling on the Hatfield and McCoy trails extends through 3 states. 💯🎉🎊
What a great state. So much freedom. The people are so nice.
Shameful.politics.WV Senator votes with democrats 95% of the time , so I don't know why West Virginians keep voting for him
I worked in Beckley but I lived in Oakhill. Thank God they have the beautiful River Gorge that I go to twice a week. So peaceful!
I really enjoyed the trip! Thanks for the drive!
I'm watching this video in Cairns Australia while waiting for a tropical cyclone to pass. It is very entertaining and informative. I watch a lot of road trips and this is one of the best.
thank you
Love this beautiful scenery, plus all the beautiful homes
I grew up in West Virginia and still live here. I wouldn't live any where else. Almost Heaven West Virginia.
Such a beautiful trip!! Thanks for taking. Us along
I worked in west Virginia for about 1 year. The most beautiful place I've ever been. Also the people there were super friendly. Wish I would have moved there permanently.
Watching this video from the Philippines.🥰
My husband repelled off the bridge a number of years until he was 69 years old. It was one of the many highlights of his life.
The tunnels are pretty cool!
Love this series!
My state! “Almost Heaven, West Virginia”.
One awesome video. Thanks for taking us along
Thank you for posting this amazing video. I left PA in 1959. I've forgotten how beautiful & green the area is back there.
This has been a great video. Would love to see this state sometime soon.
I can’t wait to actually return to the first part of that road, the vineyard and horse ranches area. It was right out of the capital. Different than all the cole mine towns.
Thank you and God bless you and keep you safe.
I like small towns and tunnels and the mountains of West Virginia
I have been to the New River Gorge in West Virginia. It was a tough hike to get back to the top on a day when it was 85 degrees.
You should have stayed on 52 all the way to KY. It gets even more beautiful north of Welch. I drove that road for years in a semi
Country roads take me home ❤️
I feel like im riding front seat along with granpa and he's pointing out all of the oddities on the road as i drift off to sleep . Great trip!
