Oh this is sad, I used to fly them on the ORD-BCN route, same cabin, back then it was actually considered to be one of the better J classes. The food was, well amazing, same choice of 4 curries, but the aunties would pile a plate with rice, then just keep adding curries, once you were done with that plate (if you managed it) another full plate would appear ! You were not getting off the flight hungry. So sad to see how far they have slipped.

Yup, PIA I believe was one of the best airlines in the world back in the 60s, but like many other things in the country it became victim to corruption. Can blame People's Party and Noon League, 2 political parties that I believe ruined Pakistan in the last ~35 years.

PIA is a case of corruption by the politicians. PIA helped start emeriates, qatar and saudia airlines, back in the 60s and 70s PIA was among the best in the world but due to it being nationalised and the politicians giving jobs for votes its gone down hill. I agree with noel some investment and training could lead this airline to be back on top again. Being a British Pakistani living in the middle east i travel among these three destinations regularly. So i have some experience. Also PIA don't fly their best product to Malaysia.

I have flown PIA on a number of occasions and have had some great experiences that I don't think are possible to replicate on any other airline anywhere.... Once on the flight from London to Islamabad my wife had a massive panic attack- the cabin crew tried to help her but failed, this is when the pilot came out and even took my wife to the cockpit to put her mind at ease about how they are flying the plane and that it was all safe. After the plane landed the captain came out once again to speak to my wife and I to wish us well on our ventures in Pakistan. On another flight on the same route, I remember one of the cabin crew looked after (for long periods of time) one of the twin babies of a family who were having a tough time tending to their 4 kids on the plane- something I doubt was in her job description!

There's quite a famous video from a few years ago now, of one of PIA's 777s coming in to land at Stansted after some of the passengers began attacking the flight crew en-route to Manchester and attempted to storm the cockpit! Something I didn't know about Stansted until recently is that it's the UK's main destination for long-haul aircraft that have this sort of problem in-flight (including hijackings, passenger unrest, drunken violence, etc.) because the long distance from the terminals to the runway means that people on the ground can be safeguarded if anything goes wrong.

I used to fly with the purser of a BA flight that was hijacked in 1975. As you can see from the following article, the aircraft ended up at Stanstead. The pursers name was Alan Bond, a wonderful guy and sadly no longer with us. He dropped the ventral airstairs at the back of the 1-11, descended with the hijacker behind him, and got bit by a police dog :) The crew were given a cruise on the QE-2 as a thank you.
" And in 1975, a British Airways plane was hijacked en route from Manchester to Heathrow airport. The passengers were let out at Heathrow on the understanding that the hijacker would be flown on to Paris.
Instead the plane actually landed at Stansted where the hijacker, who used a toy pistol and imitation dynamite to seize the jet, was arrested."

It ls also selected due to being away from the LHR and LGW very busy airspace and, the ability for military jets to bring down the target aircraft, if necessary, away from densly populated areas of London.

Having as a Customs Officer the job of searching aircraft arriving in the U.K. the one airline we hated to search was PIA it was the pits, putting a hand under a seat you never knew what surprise you would find ! I will let your brain dwell on that !
The cleaning crews got paid danger money, we didn’t.
The state of the aircraft was only one issue, the crews understanding of safety was so poor it was dangerous!
Searching the void (the space above the cabin where the control cables run) we found stolen airline goods like bottles of soda hidden in the void on the control cables, just ready to slip and ... possibly one downed aircraft.
Others were bad but none as bad as PIA
I still would never fly PIA as it may have changed (don’t know) but memories linger.
Actually talking to a good friend who was Pakistani, he also avoided PIA as if you could afford it he flew with EU based airlines.

Pretty simple really, PIA has been in operation for less than Air France, Air France has a much much larger fleet size (I’d venture to say 10 times larger than PIA) and Air France serves probably close to 100 countries while PIA… well… doesn’t.

The reason why the flight was so full was that there are very few options other than PIA to fly to Pakistan, especially from the East, as was your case. Most Western and East Asian airlines have pulled out of that market, not because they didn't sell tickets (on the contrary, it was a very profitable route), but because it was deemed unsafe, with both internal political instability and the many extremist Islamic groups that find refuge there and the government turns a blind eye, for various and complex reasons (Osama bin Laden wasn't hiding there for no reason). Even Karachi, the country's largest and busiest airport, has suffered terrorist attacks. Middle Eastern carriers still fly to Pakistan, because they can't afford to lose a very busy market and especially because the many Pakistani workers in the Gulf countries make the route politically sensitive, but other than that, there aren't many foreign airlines serving it. The safety issues and the unreliability and inefficiency of the ground services would also make it unfeasible to create a hub in Pakistan, though the geographic location is indeed superb. Many, many years ago, in a more innocent era, I made a trip to Germany and I met a Japanese guy there who had flown from Tokyo to Frankfurt via Karachi on PIA, because it was the cheapest flight, and he liked it a lot.
A curious fact: in Portuguese, the word "pia" can have three totally different meanings: as an adjective (in the female form, used for women), it means "pious", but as a noun, it means "sink" (the bathroom and kitchen fixture). It can also be one of the conjugated forms of the verb "piar", meaning "to tweet" (the actual bird sound, not on Twitter).

Hence I have absolutely no interest in ever visiting the country. Treat visitors with respect , stop trying to scam them and you may attract more visitors to your country.

that is normal when you have a one-way ticket. they do the same in most countries when flying in to europe or to the states. so nothing special about that. immigration in the states always ask "what is your reason for entering the united states" if you have a non-US passport.

PIA has a lot of history. It was one of the first airlines in the world to offer in flight entertainment. It was also a well respected carrier on which many popular people used to fly. One of them is Jacquiline Kennedy. It also has history of giving training and planes to start airlines like Emirates etc. I think it also used to serve alcohol on flights at one time. However, that's all in the past. As somone of Pakistani origin I have travelled with them many years ago when they were still very good, if not the greatest. Today this icon of past has deteriorated so much that you won't believe it's the same airline. I wish it can go back to what it used to be, but we will see.

PIA helped Turkish Air as well in every terms. Very sad to see PIA in such bad state. This is what corruption can do to a country, you need 2 staff members in a department and they employee 10 staff instead.

Back in the day 1950s and up to 1980 PIA was like Emirates and Singapore airlines are today. Perks for employees were excellent. You have to understand PIA is a nationalised airline and given the plethora of corrupt governments, patronage to those that helped the government was rife. This led to appointments of inept, uneducated staff from Punjab and interior Sindh, their work ethic is immediately up with the word barbaric. Over time the airline was raped by staffers, management where ex management set up their own airlines and deliberately lowered the standard to make their airlines more attractive. Ghost employees were created to syphon funds and even “real” employees would not turn up, but still get paid.
To make things worse you had unions and the MQM that proved to be the final nail in the coffin. Now when the walking penis Aviation minister announces without proper figures that all pilots from Pakistan have “fake” qualifications, everyone runs a mile.

I flew PIA in 1997 from JFK to Lahore with a stopover in Amsterdam. I thought it was fine except the first flight was on the first 747 ever made. Every seat was a different color and when I tried to turn the overhead light on a light would come on about 3 rows away. Other than that it was a ok flight. It was a mad rush off the plane in Amsterdam to go get a drink at the bar but we made it to Lahore and I had a nice 2 weeks visiting Sialkot

    • @antharro
      @antharro 6 місяців тому

The first 747 made, N7470, was never in commercial service. It was a testbed for Boeing until it was retired in April of 1995. It's currently at the Seattle Museum of Flight. The first commercial 747, N736PA, went to PamAm and was destroyed in the Tenerife disaster of March 1977.
PIA's first 747 was a -282 varient, AP-AYW, and was leased from TAP (Portugal) in April of 1976.
So if you meant 1977 instead of 1997, then it's possible you could have been on AP-AYW. It had a long life, staying with PIA until 2005, when it went to Evergreen where it was stored until 2010. It saw brief use with Baltia before being broken up in 2012 at KL, Malaysia.
Incidentally, this was the plane involved in the 1986 incident at Islamabad, where the crew forgot to lower the landing gear before landing.

Back in late 70s when I transited at Karachi for few days on my way to Colombo I was bribed by customs officers. In the filthy toilets, faeces visible from departure lounge, cleaners would hand me paper towels, then ask 4 money.
Was made 2 walk to hotel, 2miles away, with my suitcase. Same with Sri Lankan young lady, I offered to carry her luggage. That's in mid summer !
PIA stranded 17 Sri Lankans in Karachi just 2 accommodate 1 flight engineer. No idea of customer service. Utter crooks.

Noel. .Thanks for your video..As a frequent flier & employee in the airline industry, even before Covid19, but never flown with PIA To be honest there are several scheduled & charter airlines, with leased aircrafts, that have similar discrepencies in & out of their cabins, as the ones you showed in your video!...Many airlines within the travel lndustry are struggling with financial overheads, even since before the pandemic..Several have gone bankrupt, not being able to maintain or invest in newer aircrafts. So PIA can only repair & maintain to meet the challenge that threatens our great travel business industry...Wishing PIA the best in this, by getting back to flying around the world with international style !

Nice video mate. I am one of those dwindling breed of patriotic Pakistanis who have always chosen to fly PIA whenever possible. I am not ashamed of our old fleet, which will be modernized once we get out of our financial woes. What I am really embarrassed at is decades of corrupt politicians, and the Western, (mostly American) regimes that has been supporting them. Luckily, all that is about to change under the honest and patriotic leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
