I had a very similar situation happen to me a while back. Was scheduled to fly from St Louis to Orlando but a snow storm rolled into St Louis and grounded nearly all outbound flights, including mine. I was stuck in the airport until I saw a flight to Fort Myers was scheduled to leave. I needed to be back in Florida asap, so I switched from Orlando to the Fort Myers flight. We took off out of St Louis and then after a few hours they announced that they would need to make an early landing due to the “Lavatory being frozen.” And guess where we had to land, Orlando. 😂
I saw a documentary about the Tenerife airport disaster (1977) and it was a similar situation concerning an escape. A KLM 747 headed for nearby Gran Canaria was diverted, along with many other planes to Tenerife. A woman tour-guide who actually lived on Tenerife also did an "escape" from the rest of the passengers and left the airport, instead of getting back on that ill-fated plane which would soon smash into a Pan AM 747 with a 100% fatality rate. She is effectively the only survivor from the KLM plane. Of course both Tenerife and Gran Canaria belong to Spain, so there was no way they could have legally forced her back onto the plane but in any case I think when there are diversions many air restrictions can be waived, though you don´t want to take the risk that the staff will still insist you getting back on.
It's interesting that with international flights sometimes an "escape" is needed. Whereas for a domestic flight a traveler can simply choose not to travel. Realistically, unless immigration regulations/restrictions are involved, at traveler can simply refuse to board and just leave the airport. If immigration restrictions are involved, refusing to board would likely lead to forced boarding or deportation later on.
The meal looks like Octopus!! When I was a flight attendant, catering did that to us too! They put the wrong labels, or they gave us the wrong carts. The manifest would tell us what the meal options are. But when we open the cart, surprise!!! Worse, during covid we were no longer allowed to remove the foil to check for mistakes.
The EuroAtlantic crew is onboard for safety purposes. Essentially they operate the doors in an emergency. The LAM crew is there for the inflight service. That's often how these arrangements work.
The crew on Turkish Airlines tried to move us from our seats that we reserved and paid for as they wanted to sit there, I explained that we had paid for the seats, the stews weren't happy but fair play, their chief stew told them to sit elsewhere, it was just after Covid and they weren't doing any kind of service anyway
Just wanted to say that I love how your always able to silo your opinions about the different aspects of the airlines you review and not let your disappointment in one area carry over into other areas in a bias way. I feel like a-lot of travel content creators don’t do that. They have a bad check in experience for example and you can just tell they are carrying that negative attitude throughout the rest of the video. 🤦♂️
Awesome case of unintentional reverse skiplag. Not going to lie, I watched the video to the end to see if you got tackled by security after saying things work out in the end... ;)
First all, you are always so gracious to airline personnel. Considering the seat change, inop IFE and the unwanted octopus, you continue to smile and carry on with good cheer! As a retired 33 year airline crew member, you are too good to be true! Now as for entering the Republic of South Africa without going through customs/Immigration and disappearing from your Maputo flight, I will be anxious to see if that set off any alarms. I hope all went well! I'll be at the edge of my lie flat seat until the next episode!!
I had my boarding pass already for the next (international) flight so I didn’t need to enter SA, I stayed airside. Also they ended up canceling the flight entirely and putting other passengers on another airline to Maputo so they weren’t looking for me
Woohoo 🙌 Noel, it’s always exciting to see what’s going to happen to you each episode. I think that flights is definite for locals, the food being the biggest give away. I loves that you could escape and not have to go re do the flight. ❤❤❤
When I worked at a major airline, the crew weren't assigned to a seat that was assigned to a fare paying passenger. One thing that I enjoy about what you do, you will adventure into interesting places that are not the common places people travel to.
When a 767 flies international, the crew gets a seat in the cabin because 767 does not have crew rest bunks. Remember he stated originally he was supposed to be on a 777 and it was downgraded to a 767. However his seat was not changed at time of check in. Not until he got to the gate. I worked for a major airline at the ticket counter and gates for 9 years and now a flight crew for 10 years.

As for the catering, it depends on who handled/provided that, FA's probably have no influence but the airline (LAM) is more directly responsible for this one. It seems strange to me that they bother to put their own crew on board, as I'd think it more efficient to let the wet lease crew handle that
Yes, it’s a wet lease. So theoretically you shouldn’t have to add more crew, but obviously they had to. The LAM staff would still have to help with evacuation etc.
@@ParumPirumIn cases like this with ACMI wet leases, it means EuroAtlantic is in charge of the aircraft and the safety procedures, therefore the screen/IFE issue is EuroAtlantic’s fault. Regarding the inflight meal: You know what they say, octopus is the lamb of the sea... if it had eight arms, was a predator, a beak, and you've never seen a sheep.
That airline appears to kick passengers from window seats so they can give them to crew instead. That is disgusting behavour of the airline. The customer should come first
@@QCCatPlanes Airlines are required (by EASA/FAA regulations) to rest crew on medium-/long-haul flights in lie-flat seats. And, to utilize the blackout curtains (also a requirement), a window seat is required because there's no way to partition the middle seat with a curtain.
I have done this before. I was the highest status with an airline and I didn't want to give up my seat because they have the status written by seat number and for me service was more important than a view i've already seen.
If there was a checked bag, and the bag's owner did not re-board, would the airline be required to remove the checked bag from the airplane, because "unaccompanied" luggage (a bomb?) is prohibited from being carried? Also, if there was a checked-bag that was tagged to Noel's final destination (Jo'burg ?), the airline's responsibility is to carry it there. Granted, it may take a week for the airline to reroute it to Jo'burg, and to notify Noel of its final location. Noel did say that he had another flight (on another airline?) that day. Noel may have needed to eventually physically return to Jo'burg to claim his bag. So, not having any checked bags was the key to this "escape".

that "lamb" (octopus) you ate is an popular portuguese dish known as "polvo à lagareiro" -- personally, one of my favorite portuguese dishes. being served something like that on a plane blows my mind... looks much better than the typical microwaved lean cuisine prision meal.
I fly every year to Mozambique from Portugal and when I do, it's always with Turkish Airlines. I don't mind the time it takes to get to Mozambique compared with TAP/LAM. The price is cheaper and the service is far better than the other two companies.
But if something goes wrong with Turkish, good luck! (Cancelled flight, delayed flight, missed connection, lost baggage, change of aircraft type, delayed baggage, EU261 claim etc etc with Turkish means BIG PROBLEM) I know, I tried them once and NEVER AGAIN!!! Their cabin crews usually work hard but if something goes wrong, they are a mess!!
Lots of airports don’t have border force before getting to the departure hall (they would only have it before going to baggage claim). Also, a lot of airports disembark directly into the departure hall (Edinburgh, UK and Changi, Singapore spring to mind). So he may not have needed to clear security or immigration
Yes, this seems to be a relatively modern thing, especially with big, hub-type airports such as Singapore and KL. But UK? Really? I fly fairly frequently and I am sure that LHR does not have mingling of arrival and departure. One of the extremely annoying consequences of having a mingling of arriving passengers and departing passengers is the need for a double security check. So you have to go though security at the entrance to airside and you have to do it all over again at the general departure gate area. Really, really annoying. Or maybe that is just me. 😐
But the main issue is whether he was flying internationally or not. If it was a domestic SA flight, then he would have needed to go through immigration first. If it is international then yes possibly he can claim he was transiting but at the very least there would have to be a security check.
@@thisismonitor4099There might be security at the gate if you are on a connecting flight? Or it might be considered safe since you have been airside the entire time. He did mention in the video he was going to another country so I assume that means it was international.

Hello Noel The reason there was 2 set of crew is pretty simple LAM was there as service crew or representative and Eurotlantic was there for safety reason means they hold CCA ( Cabin crew attestation) who allowed them to operate on an European registered aircraft. It’s common in ACMI operation. Safe flights
@@scottevans2685That’s not what was said at all. It’s a EuroAtlantic aircraft charted by Lam, but not reconfigured to a Mozambique registration. Nowadays you fly business class to have half a chance at sleeping enough to power through the day and avoid bad jet lag. That's pretty much all to be honest. Yet business class fares are reaching outrageous levels.
Main reason for flying business class is flexibility. Meeting with someone has been canceled? You can fly home early, or if things take longer than planned you can fly later. These tickets are easy to change and rebook and there's usually seats available in biz class on flights.

7:40 That's what airlines are doing now, they are splitting up tickets that booked together to different seats, then they make you pay extra to select seats together. I flew Korean Air earlier this year with my mother who is handicapped, they split our seats and the flight crew refused to let us seat together even though the seat next to my mom's seat was empty. If you want to seat together, never buy two tickets in the same reservation, just book two tickets separately then request a specific seat number and see if you get lucky instead.
Euro Atlantic is a Portuguese wet-lease airline, and while it leases planes and crew to airlines all over the world, its focus is on the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. It operates flights for the national airlines of São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, and Mozambique, some of which are or have been banned from EU airspace with their own planes or might not have the financial means to afford a long-haul jet (though TAAG Angola Airlines do fly their own 777-300ERs to Lisbon as well, yet it wet-leases Euro Atlantic's planes for some flights). And Noel, if you love Lisbon and "custard tarts" so much, it's time you learned their proper name, it isn't so hard, and they might not understand you if you ask for a "custard tart". Singular form: *"pastel de nata"* (in the approximate local pronunciation, "pash-TELL-DNAH-tah", like the Dubai-based catering company). Plural form: *"pastéis de nata"* ("pash-TAYESH-DNAH-tah"). @@sachaquadrelli4674, not exactly true. The little tart is called "pastel de nata". But there is a specific bakery in the Lisbon district of Belém that makes particularly good and renowned ones, and THOSE are "pastéis de Belém". Elsewhere they are just "pastéis de nata".

I am a cargo airline pilot. It makes zero sense to me to carry non type rated LAM pilots on this flight so I would assume all the pilots are from Euro Atlantic . Training( every 6 months we have retraining)and paying pilots is a very expensive affair and I can guarantee you no airline would train and pay pilots just to offer service or not operate the aircraft. As for cabin crew I would assume the LAM crew are also issued a validation/ conversion to EASA to operate the Euroatlantic aircraft. It is much easier to convert Cabin crew as for pilots it is much harder and expensive. Legally things like evacuation require type rated crew at the mandatory exits so it does not make sense to have LAM cabin crew who can not handle their station during an evacuation.

The manifest would tell us what the meal options are. But when we open the cart, surprise!!! Worse, during covid we were no longer allowed to remove the foil to check for mistakes.
Tha looked like Polvo à Lagareiro and it's delicious!
When I worked at a major airline, the crew weren't assigned to a seat that was assigned to a fare paying passenger. One thing that I enjoy about what you do, you will adventure into interesting places that are not the common places people travel to.
That and I can certainly say that as someone who flies every single day, I could care less about a window seat.
Why does the crew need a window seat when they ought to sleep anyway? 🧐
@@verabolton They don't have to sleep, merely rest, and giving them a window seat means they're less likely to be disturbed by a passenger net to them.

Wrong dish, horrible octopus, disgusting breakfast, broken screen.
Makes perfect sense.
@@ParumPirum I mean, the plane (and IFE system) probably are from EuroAtlantic, so if it doesn't work the LAM crew can't do anything about it. As for the catering, it depends on who handled/provided that, FA's probably have no influence but the airline (LAM) is more directly responsible for this one. It seems strange to me that they bother to put their own crew on board, as I'd think it more efficient to let the wet lease crew handle that
@@ParumPirum No surprise is it? lol
Meanwhile service and catering is done from the client’s side, hence LAM, so the awful choices of food (especially for business class) is on LAM’s fault. Hope this helped!

I have done this before. I was the highest status with an airline and I didn't want to give up my seat because they have the status written by seat number and for me service was more important than a view i've already seen.
That guy probably also choses the urinal next to someone when there are many others available.
Wow! Good thing you only had carryon luggage. Having checked luggage would have seriously complicated you escape maneuver. Glad it worked out....
So glad that worked in your favor! Great video Noel!

Não acredito que fique mais barato fazer escala em Istambul do que ir diretamente de Lisboa para Maputo com a TAP.
Or it might be considered safe since you have been airside the entire time.

yip, so he would only go through x ray and metal detector . and all they check is boarding pass and passport correspond...not immigration...he never entered SA...
same as flying via Dubai, which is like a Fedex for people, they just offload the planes, chuck the people into the mall, resort them and reload them... security checks, but no immigraotion/customs. you thus never enter Dubai.. just check names and boarding passes.
Johannesburg is the hub for Southern Africa, so plenty people transit to Botswana, Namibia, Zim and Moz through it without actually entering SA... you stay airside..Same for most Hub airports...Only Heathrow caused an issue with terminal 5 , which is seperate, and requires immigration and transit visas. Mate of mine was detained at heathrow for 24 hrs cos his travel agent had booked a ticket via Heathrow without informing him ( or did not know the terminal 5 situation) of need for transit visa (South Africans require visas for UK)
It is only when you change to a local flight that you exit customs/immigration and they just want to know that your passport and visa are in order...the assumption being that if you are airside that you came on a plane from somewhere..so immigration does in any country does not check your boarding pass...not their job.
only possible to do what he did without a checked bag. Leaving a plane with a checked bag onboard SHOULD cause alarm bells. I once spent 3 hrs on the tarmac at Charles de Gaulle due to a miscount of the heads that ended in all bags being offloaded onto the tarmac and each of us having to put our bag onto the conveyor back into the plane. When no bags were left over , they recounted and found the error... no apology!
Skiplagging is a thing , especially in USA, but on their internal flights..
I live in CapeTown and it is usually cheaper to fly to Venice in Italy via Dubai than it is to buy a ticket to Dubai...on the same plane...Vagaries of airline pricing.. I however would not try this stunt with the Dubai authorities 🤣and have thus been in Dubai on numerous occasions, but never entered it.

Hello Noel
The reason there was 2 set of crew is pretty simple LAM was there as service crew or representative and Eurotlantic was there for safety reason means they hold CCA ( Cabin crew attestation) who allowed them to operate on an European registered aircraft. It’s common in ACMI operation. Safe flights
TL;DR version: the African crew was too inexperienced and incompetent to be trusted by themselves.
@@scottevans2685That’s not what was said at all. It’s a EuroAtlantic aircraft charted by Lam, but not reconfigured to a Mozambique registration.
It’s Portuguese registered so a Portuguese crew have to be onboard for ensuring Portuguese safety standards are being met. Lam crew are there to ensure their service is being done per their standards.
If anything, the TL;DR is: Lam needs to buy more planes.

Nowadays you fly business class to have half a chance at sleeping enough to power through the day and avoid bad jet lag. That's pretty much all to be honest.
Yet business class fares are reaching outrageous levels.
There are better airlines with better business class, but after the pandemic service took a dive and prices doubled. That's the problem.
business is only worth the price in a handful of airlines.
Main reason for flying business class is flexibility. Meeting with someone has been canceled? You can fly home early, or if things take longer than planned you can fly later. These tickets are easy to change and rebook and there's usually seats available in biz class on flights.

The name means literally "cream pastry".
"Pastel de nata" is a knock-off. The originals are "Pastel de Belém", opa!

The Euroatlantic crew is the flying crew that are type-rated and employed by the AOC holder. The LAM crew is there to do service only and are not type-rated on the aircraft and are not allowedrun the aircraft systems. You shuold know this Noel...
And I'm not only talking cockpit crew here.
For someone who travels so much he doesn't seem to know a lot about travelling and planning but am not sure what he did if it is true and that's a big IF not returning to the plane can cause many issues that's why I think it's BS
