  • Now showing in Australian cinemas. #Nitram (Caleb Landry-Jones) lives with his mother (Judy Davis) and father (Anthony LaPaglia) in suburban Australia in the Mid 1990s. He lives a life of isolation and frustration at never being able to fit in. That is until he unexpectedly finds a close friend in a reclusive heiress, Helen (Essie Davis). However when that friendship meets its tragic end, and Nitram’s loneliness and anger grow, he begins a slow descent into a nightmare that culminates in the most nihilistic and heinous of acts. A film by #JustinKurzel.

I have this theory that when you're trying to decide whether you should watch a film or not you come to UA-cam watch the trailer AND read comments for about 5 minutes.. Its honestly better than going off a rotten tomatoes or imdb rating

GO SEE THIS FILM. It’s shocking, it’s disturbing, it makes your skin crawl, but it’s a story that needed to be told. I wanted to hate Landry-Jones’ performance. As an Aussie actor, I was upset they had cast an American in a role about such an infamous moment in Australian history. Having now seen it, I cannot fault his performance in anyway. This film is unmissable, the best Australian movie I’ve seen in a long time. Go see it in the cinema.

As someone who grew up in Tasmania and is very familiar with the Port Arthur case, I thought this was an absolutely phenomenal and impactful film that gives us insight into Martin as a person. Most importantly, it is a sad yet important reminder of the many lives lost that day. You will never be forgotten ♥️
'Nitram' certainly doesn't glorify him, there is very little violence that occurs on screen which I found respectful and tasteful. Whilst some consider the film insensitive or unnecessary, I think it's not only important to learn his backstory, but it is a big part of Australian history that cannot be forgotten. We cannot forget the tragedy that occured that day, and the many lives lost.
It's also a perfect presentation of our systemic mistakes and failures.. the perfect example of why lenient gun laws are a danger to society and why access to supports is essential for those with disabilities.
Please do yourself a favour and watch this.

I just finished watching it. I’ve been dying to watch this movie for months now but it only came to Canada April 1st 2022 which was my 3 year anniversary of sobriety. I was waiting for the right pocket of time to watch this alone, in quiet.
I cannot put into words how next level this film is. The story, unfortunately, has a lot of allure but I wasn’t expecting this. Caleb has always been an excellent actor in my opinion but this performance truly is Oscar-worthy. Anthony LaPaglia, Essie Davis and Judy Davis could all be in the running for best supporting too.
Please, if for whatever reason you don’t know the Port Arthur Massacre story, read up on it, watch videos and the interviews with Martin Bryant, and THEN watch this film.

Nitram 2021: A point of view. The path to least resistance?
    I knew the story first.
I knew the events before watching the film - the terrible killings.
I watched the trailer - regrettably. I essentially got the message in that short clip: Dysfunctional family. Child-man on a swing. Dissonant 'Chop-Sticks.' Guess how it ends?
Familiar tropes that - although effective and at times, movingly disturbing - the look in Landry's eyes of (innocent?) evil, only lead step by recognisable step to what was expected, accommodating and acceptable.
It can be simply overdone - over used oil on troubled water. And because of the horror and possible insult/distress/memories of those families involved - the film takes a predestined course, that would safely lead me to a conclusion that satisfied 'comfort'- in that, it would end just when it really began:
...I am saved from the terror.
    Unlike the victims.
I can 'enjoy' the film as a singular artistic experience. I have not been disturbed, too much.
The film takes a middle ground - in that, Landry's Nitram displays general behaviours normal to brooding stubborn teenagers, the oddballs & misfit loners that wander about lost in youth. I knew a few. And their behaviour was not so different to Landry's Nitram. Children can be awfully cruel too: the Mother recounting Nitram's laughing 'at her pain.' I don't think that is enough to condemn the child to 'disturbed individual.' We only do so because we know the outcome.
I became increasingly restless hoping i would not have the plug pulled on me when a strong stomach & emotion is required to hold me in my seat.
Imagination is needed with it's testy companion: courage.
The list of violent films is endless - with their 'endless violence,' gore and blood, exploding body parts etc etc. And to be honest 99% are mindlessly boring. Some based on true stories too, like this one: And I am not endorsing insensitive violence.
Think of Gus Van Zant's 'Elephant.' A supremely eloquent portrayal of terrible killings that shows something of it's reality: automatic weapons used in that moment. How easy, how simple. How utterly terrifying.
But here with Nitram I think there is a flaw. A flaw built on fear?
(Changes were made to gun laws, very quickly after this mass murder, in 12 twelve days, apparently.)
By the way, all the performances are excellent - not one missed note. With a nod toward Judy Davis most of all. Her exhausted resignation & bitterness are engrained down her aged face - incredibly fine tuned expressions. So much so I lost the actress to her part. And that haircut put the cap of 'her failure' firmly on her head - she is quietly astonishing & forlorn. It really is 'her' film.
And the other protagonists stand shoulder to shoulder.
Caleb Landry is eerily unnerving in certain moments. But beyond that there's not a lot for him to do - except act childlike in an adult body.
And for this my attention was pulled away by the other two:
LaPaglia's Father and Essie Davis's eccentric loner - all superbly controlled & deeply felt. And it is they I was drawn to - these 3 performances & characters. And how they poured their souls & remaining energies into the vacuum of Nitram/Bryant.
(It's worth noting that Bryant had 2 girlfriends before the shootings and that Essie Davis's character Helen Harvey was considerably older than Bryant - and according to one photo looked extremely different to the one portrayed - which makes the film's purpose somewhat questionable: why not find an actress that looked more like Harvey? A romantic re-sketching in line with a personal vision, yet toying with the truth?)
Landry's Nitram is a tough short straw. How many actors play killers & maniacs? And how many are lauded for their 'outstanding central performance?'
But it isn't Landry's 'central performance.' It is the other 3. Judy Davis particularly, who dominate the screen. And by their presence to Nitram, elevate Landry's performance.
For me it comes down to the end - where the horror begins. Landry's Nitram places the video camera on the table - and up he gets with his semi-automatic.
(The film seemed to tiptoe around Nitram: as though, what should we 'do' with him? Yet the others were fully fledged in their struggles, easier perhaps, because they are not controversial?)
It should have started right there - through the video lens. Through the eyes of those witnessing it. Bryant facing the film camera pulling the trigger.
The screen blacks. Then again the video camera, then again a witness, then again the film camera. Then again black screen.
Half a dozen heavy body blows strike the viewer's senses: Look! Automatic weapons!
The idea being - not needless gore, but the rapidity of evil dispatched with semi-automatic weapons.
    How easy, how simple.
    How utterly terrifying!
A moments pause in black screen. The viewer gathers himself back together - it's only a film, remind me, it's only a film.
But i have - in some way, experienced a terrible and horrific moment. And not had evil sanitised - so I feel ok: it is not glorification or gratification. It is the portrayal of ugly events, done with a sensitivity that allows the viewer a momentary visceral experience: the effects of automatic weapons before your eyes.
And then regress...I suppose I'm thinking of Gaspar Noé's Irréversible as an example..
so from here - the black screen, we begin that journey to previous troubled times and less and less so. To a boy, with his life in front of him. To a time of innocence. And to a time when we could be rescued from nightmares: stringent gun laws. And the protection & care of vulnerable children.
Perhaps we see Nitram /Bryant playing on the beach or in his back garden: he's waving for the camera, happy, an innocent boy - briefly free of what is to come..
So, I'm not sure what I watched here? Perhaps a dream fantasy based on reality, coloured into a fiction that tells a story without beginning nor end - if, one watches it solely as a film. And for that purpose it works very well. But nudging at the truth left me in 'no man's land.'
If film & story are going to inform and educate us - let us not turn away from their fearless wisdom & warning. That can be horrific.
From the end of the film. And I quote: 'There are now more firearms owned in Australia than in 1996.'
What is it people do not see? Or wish to?
Essentially something has changed. But possibilities seem to have gotten worse?
Why are we not paying attention?
If our 'view' is turned away from the 'real' horror around us. How can we know it is really there? Unless we see it, or experience a version of it - to let us know that how humanity conducts itself is real and affecting. And truth is not reconstructed as an ambivalence when 'deemed' too uncomfortable, or unpalatable.
