I've been telling people this for years. The sequel & Dive alert had wireless battles WAYYY before the Game Boy Advance. RIP NGPC. You were too good for this world.
Dive alert was sick. On a tangent, I had all of my roommates run out and buy the NGP after seeing mine. All of us got mvc and the sbk/capcom card fighters clash. We had a hot tub at our place, and we still wanted to play while in the hot tub, so we all got ziploc bags, put the NGPs in them, and played them in the hot tub lol. We were hooked. Also, the joystick made MVC soooo good on the NGP. Godlike.
17:02 Funny that Falcoon is the main illustrator for the first two Card Fighters games. His chibis are really cool even if you don't like his art style in the KOF games.
I really, REALLY appreciate you making this video! As a kid I never got a Neo Geo but I was SOOO wanting to play that card game. So when Card Fighters DS came out, I was all over it! It was one of my favorite DS games to play, made multiple different decks for it and had some really powerful combos. But it also really wasn't that hard to play especially against the CPU at one point as it wasn't that smart. I've actually had some really, really weak cards on the field, like Phoenix Wright, and was able to one shot people because they refused to fight because of the rest of my board. Still, I had lots of fun with it. Then learning about the game breaking bug, I did return my cart to them and when I did, I got a box with the updated cart, and also a pack of the SNK card game at the time! I believe it was UFS. It was the first time I've ever interacted with a video game company, and they sent a letter apologizing for the issue too! Though a part of me wish I didn't because I barely went through the game again a 2nd time. I miss my old cards and old data, but still glad for the experience.
I wish there were more ccg/tcg rpg video games like this one and the Pokémon tcg game for the Gameboy color. Walking around and challenging folks to get more cards to improve your deck is such a great gameplay loop (as long as the card game itself is fun, of course).
The artwork of these games is simply fantastic - the chibis from the NGPC are a classic, and although DS used a more standard style, the rarer cards are drawn by legendary SNK artists like Falcoon, Eisuke Ogura and Kita Senri (the latter may sound familiar to Fire Emblem players - she's the main artist in the Tellius games) which is a cool detail. As someone who also likes fighting and card games, maybe I should give them a spin too!
Woah, very nice video. I have been interested on this game since I was a little kid. Now thanks to you, I know it's on Switch and I'm probably buying it when I get the chance.
Absolutely love the original Card Fighters Clash. Its sprite semi-chibi artstyle is so charming and unique, and the actual core gameplay is one of the most fast-paced and enjoyable card games I've ever played. For people interested, I'd honestly avoid the rerelease ports on Switch/Steam - they have horrible baked-in input delay (around 6frames of it), and the Devs said they had to, but actually emulating the games on a Neogeo emulator like Ares has no issues with input delay. The actual card game is also a mod on Tabletop Simulator, which is a perfect way to play it!
A Card Fighers Clash video that doesn't mention the unofficial Card Fighters project?! I have printed copies of the SNK and Capcom starter decks that I was able to send to a Print-on-Demand service, and is slowly replacing the old art with new art to get around any possible copyright issues (depictions of characters that they don't technically own aside). Still, while it isn't official and won't have any resale value, you can absolutely get your own copies of these cards printed in pretty good quality.
My favorite cards are the ones showing characters interacting each other 😄 Seeing Jeanne D'Arc (World Heroes) alongside Charlotte (Samurai Shodown), leading a French army. Carol (Savage Reign) alongside Tiffany Lords (Rival Schools) as cheerleaders. Bao (KOF) and Ai (Neo Geo Battle Coliseum) playing video games. Nanja Momja (Twinkle Star Sprites) looking at Mr. Karate's tengu mask. Those made me so happy 😊
As someone who loves pixel art, these games are a blessing! ☺️ Glad that SNK Playmore put characters from KOF Maximum Impact, World Heroes, Twinkle Star Sprites, Aggressors of Dark Kombat and even Ninja Master's! Too bad SNK Playmore and Capcom didn't make another crossover fighting game back then. I would love to see Kisarah Westfield against Sakura. Lien Neville against C. Viper. Say all you want about the SNK Playmore era but they used characters from their different IPs for their games, not only KOF and SamSho. Wish the actual SNK was like that, I am tired of seeing the same popular/familiar faces.
To be fair SNK Heroines got Jeanne in it, and SamSho 2019 brought back Hibiki. I’m pretty sure a future crossover (moreso inter-company rather than purely SNK) game would see a fair share of deep cuts. COTW will likely have forgotten FF characters not in KoF, and possibly some AoF and B1 stuff too.
as a long time magic player and a big fan of the old pokemon tcg game boy color game i was always pretty curious about this series. i'll definitely have to give the first game a look
This game series is so good. The artwork, the simple rules... It's a shame it wasn't also on the game boy. I think a gameboy port would've made this series bigger. We all played this on emulator, the ngpc was rare.
As someone who only ever heard of the first game but never played it, it's funny to learn via 07:39 that Morrigan arguably got out-bosomed by both Vice and a character I've never even heard of (Kain). I have to wonder if some of the card-esque effects in the _(U)MvC3_ side mode were inspired by these games or just completely separate. (Also, finally subscribed like I thought I did the last two times. Whoops.)
I love this game, only managed to get to play it on the Switch, and would love to get my brother into it but there's just one problem... the multiplayer on that version does not support multi-device play, only copying P1's data for P2. Because of this, I cannot (yet) recommend this to my brother, because playing against each other with our own decks is just seems like too much work... On the bright side, no matter whether you choose SNK or Capcom to start, all cards are obtainable!
Card Fighters Clash is also Ported to Switch. And it's a GREAT Port. As it has Trading with, yourself. Just play the SNK and Capcom Versions past the Tutorial and you can trade between the two games. Have fun.
I mostly remember seeing sprite rips of this as a kid and thinking the cards looked incredibly cool despite not knowing most of the characters at the time
it's by a Capcom in house artist named Kinu Nishimura, if you want a good time just google her work for Capcom and SNK crossovers or the Capcom Calenders, she really brings so much character and life to her drawings
Card Fighters DS introduced me to SNK. I remember being like 8 when I got the game, barely knowing how to spell, and on Orochi Chris' bio it had a hilarious typo. The word "naive" was spelled "na?ve" and I distinctively remember spelling it that way on an assignment. My teacher only looked at me funny, and from then on I realized the game's translation was not perfect. Also another mistranslation was Proto Man's abilty, "Bruce Strikes Back." I always thought of who Bruce was, but later i learned that it is originally "Blues Strikes Back."
Yup, there are many mistranslations - others that I can recall are Gill's "Seraphic Ring" (instead of Wing), Megaman's "Charged Lock Buster" (L and R mixed up, "Charged Mega Buster" would be ideal), and Mei-Ling keeping her sister's Japanese name in her skill ("Let's go, Lei-Lei!" instead of "Let's go, Hsien-Ko!")
I never thought I'd live to see and hear the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2007 DS Game OST in a UA-cam video, let alone on a video related to fighting games. God bless you GWQ.
Based Digimon player. I loved Cardfighters Clash when I emulated it back in college. Glad to see it getting a spotlight. Had no idea it for a physical release, that's insane. With how TCGs are booming right now that even Disney wanted a piece, I wonder if we'd ever get a reboot of this game.
No joke, this might be the game I have played the most in my life? Like prob 1000 hours in the 25(?) years since I bought it at the mall EB. I loved it so much that after playing my cart (capcom), I bought the SNK one years later just to start it from scratch because you only get you one save, and I didnt want to lose a single card. Even had a buddy who also played so we could get the two cards that were exclusive to battling versus. Nobody talks about this game!! I'm not much of a card game guy that much - though my Slay the Spire hours may say otherwise lol - but this one game truly spoke to me. I love fighting games. Capcom has always been #1, and SNK might very well be #2 depending on the day, so this was such a cool way to learn about each companies franchises. To this day I will see a quick thing that includes games like Forgotten Worlds, Last Resort, and Legendary Wings and be like "daaaayum that's where that card came from!" I was able to play the sequel for NGPC and it was fine enough (even with ENG trans.) though it just didnt capture the critical rock-paper-scissor sense of basic strategy/deep balance the initial had. Well, until you could just rack up Akuma's, Mech Akuma/M. Zangief's, Yashiro's, Yamazaki's, Evil Ryu's, and Twelve's (he could be great!). Also, skipped the DS version after that same friend said it just did do it for him. This post is so long. I just love, love, love the NGPC and found this to be my fave game on the thing. There are "better" games [SvC:MotM is so awesome], that are more popular. I could go on about how much I love the console and catalogue. I am just damn happy Card Clash is getting some love :)
Man I used to own Card Fighters clash around 2001, I absolutely loved it. You want to talk about an addicting game? Look no further, I put tons of hours into this game man, honestly it’s probably my most played Neo Geo Pocket Color game, even moreso than the excellent SvC Match of the Millennium.
Another problem with the DS one is that the new energy system and cards not being able to attack NOR defend the first turn they're placed in the field hugely favor rush decks with low cost characters with as much BP as possible without caring about HP or special abilities. Even if you don't want to be cheap, if a CPU opponent happens to have low cost characters in their deck and they get a good starting hand you're screwed no matter what you do.
I agree with everything you said! I recently picked up a NGP out of curiosity and the person sent along the Capcom version of this game. Well..I ended up picking up the SNK ver from ebay because I loved it so much! Such a shame I missed it back in it's heyday, but I'm ashamed to admit the GB and Pokemon had it's talons in me!
TCG based on other properties are always interesting. You can't take away the element of random chance since you need to draw cards from a deck, so the developers need to keep this in mind while still staying true to the source material. Ironically, fighting games are well suited as card games due to being focused on using moves that naturally win or lose against other moves, just like with high and low cards.
One thing I like about the game artwork is how they tried to make the cards 3Dish. All the characters extend out the border of the cards making it seem like their popping out.
I got a little smug chuckle when you mentioned you play digimon and one piece, it made how you specifically noted the declare blockers style make a lot more sense. As a magic player I forget that most japanese games give the choice of targets to attackers instead of defender.
Yeah it's one of the things I really like about magi and its kind of funny that even games that were explicitly copying it like YGO never took that style of combat but this little video game based card game well after all these TCGs debuted decided to. Dead jealous of the SVC cards btw, after seeing those GG and Melty cards I might need to try making my own collection!
Fun game, sucks that the switch version only lets you play mirror matches offline, the 2nd player just gets a copy of your deck instead of selecting a deck.
the neo geo pocket color really did deserve a longer life.(honestly prefer a lot of it to the gb.) if/when we get a snk vs. capcom 3 would absolutely love it having a roster(even if it was npc's for a adventure mode or street fighter alpha 3 esque world tour.) like this as the series represented(like power stone, red earth, motw, maximum impact, resident evil, devil may cry, onimusha, nest saga when they strangely didn't show up in the other cvs, cyberbots, star gladiator and rival schools alongside the neat references to their character.:3) especially in ds as i remember these & match of the millennium interesting me more than the console fighting games being what really opened my love of snk/capcom's other series when i got into snk from playing kof at a laundry loving it at 1st play.
IIRC this series is the only Capcom crossover to include Breath of Fire content. Wonder what the deal with that is. At least the DS game came out well before the the (by all accounts) excellent Over the Nexus (which given the BMG, you already know about). That should have set a new standard for card game games, but the only ones Konami made after that were Tag Force games that were mostly reused assets, lazy and under featured opponent galleries on console. I don't think anyone besides Konami made a serious attempt at a single player card game game afterwards either. I've heard Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game, White Wolf's officially licensed RPG using a variant of the Vampire the Masquerade rules, uses a card system for attacks. Only thing mechanic I'm aware of that depends on them being cards (instead of them just being quick reference sheets in card shape) is initiative, and that might have been added by the later spiritual successors.
Do you plan on doing a review video game for Phantom dust? It is basically a card game mixed with arena brawler that was on the original xbox and is free on pc through the xbox app
I adore these games. There's a Card Fighter Project that created a physical version of the game and lets you download high res pdfs so you can make your own deck. I printed out my own deck years ago, paying a professional print shop. That's just how much I love the game.
I didn't know some of those early fighting game cards even existed. If you could, I would be happy if you talked about them, or at least showed off your collection and maybe give a link to someone who knows more about them. I would have been so hyped as a kid to see a Darkstalkers card game if I had known it had existed.
Certainly you've played UFS, right? Still my favorite card game, though it's lost a lot of its charm since it decided to focus purely on MHA. But yeah, before that, it was like a decade and a half of FGC franchises. Made a cube, pretty fun drafting game (when I can find people to play with)
Man, this video made me trip down my memory lane and remember the early days of emulation and how I struggled with any kind of thing that was in another language. Eventually this made me learn english by myself because my parents couldn't afford to pay a school with the appropriate methods to teach me. And with time I discovered that this is kind of a common thing here in Brazil, lots of people learned English through video games, movies, music and sometimes even books. Me and my two brothers nowadays speak and write in English at least decently (I guess I'm far from being considered fluent yet). After you read this, pardon me for any possible mistake.
Your English is great! Being from Texas I have a ton of friends from Mexico who learned English the same way. I'm glad those experiences brought you here!
I would check and see if somebody has translated Versus TCG or SvC in general to Tabletop Simulator. If Zatch Bell The Card Battle has a module then I wouldn't be shocked if this game does (PS please do a video on 8ing's Zatch Bell/Konjiki no Gash games and how the roster varied between regions because of the dub being behind).
What a nostalgia trip! Used to emulate the first game to no end back in the day, finished both versions, then I had to wait for someone to translate the second game so I could also play it. I still play this in my Switch when l can
I played the heck out of Cardfighters Clash as a teenager. I was fortunate enough to actually own a NGPC back then. SVC: Match of the Millennium was also a blast!
The purely-Capcom Teppen could also be worth a mention. The tone and aesthetic of Teppen are a lot darker and closer to MtG than these games, and a lot of characterization and continuity errors exist. However, there are about as many deep cuts as these, but few of them are properly playable characters. There’s no chibi art; in fact the aesthetics are more realistic than ever before and sometimes border on the uncanny valley.
I actually bought a NeoGeo Pocket Color at RetroPalooza in Arlington a couple years ago. First game I got with it was Card Fighter Clash Capcom Version
Oh man, I'll definitely have to check this out at some point. I love the 2 Pokemon TCG games on the Game Boy, and the first game at least looks extremely similar (at least structurally speaking). I really wish we got more card game RPGs like these in general. These days, it seems like most digital card games are either rougelites or clients only used to play card games online with others.
As a lifelong Capcom and TCG enthusiast, this is THE game that made me want a NEO GEO Pocket Color back then (well, and Sonic Pocket Adventure) though I wouldn't get one until finding it at a thrift store years later, so my first time playing a Card Fighters game was actually the DS game and I'll be honest: I love it. Of course, I had no context for what the previous games played like, and yes, there is quite a lot of depth under the hood! Also, I checked my cartridge after watching this video, and I *do* actually have the patched version! I do now own the original Card Fighters on Switch, so I am absolutely gonna spend some quality time with it, it looks like a ton of fun
I love these games, honestly. It's baffling that CFC 2 still hasn't seen an official release. The fan translation is great, but there are some tiny flaws that grate my nerves. Flavor text is also absent.
I found out about this game when it released on the eshop and it's really fun! Never knew about the sequels though so it's great to see them here. A new card fighters would be awesome but I'd be happy to just get an official version of the 2nd game someday
Nice to see the guilty gear board game demo! Have you tried Exceed’s other expansions? They have ones for Shovel Knight, Blazblue, UNICLR and Street Fighter
Took all my thoughts about it haha. Love how you can play SF and KoF with npcs in the first game to change the bgm. I actually think if the companies collabed for a 4th game, it would be on mobile, and could do well. SNK has about 10 licensed out mobile games already anyway. If per chance in hell we do get the 2nd game on Switch, I really hope we get netplay unlike the 1st!

17:02 Funny that Falcoon is the main illustrator for the first two Card Fighters games. His chibis are really cool even if you don't like his art style in the KOF games.
Seeing Miles Edgeworth scroll across the screen during the DS game section gave me a moment of double take whiplash
I was wondering why Ukyo was always coughing in SS. Man solved an age long mystery for me.
They were actually supposed to kill him off because of his illness but he was so popular with female fans that they let him live lol
Is that why he gets chased by a bunch of girls in some of his win animations?@@dnkakusei

This post is so long. I just love, love, love the NGPC and found this to be my fave game on the thing. There are "better" games [SvC:MotM is so awesome], that are more popular. I could go on about how much I love the console and catalogue. I am just damn happy Card Clash is getting some love :)
So this is where those mugen archive icons came from
i hope someone does an indie game inspired by it
Man I used to own Card Fighters clash around 2001, I absolutely loved it.
0:33 I miss Epic Battles. Liked it so much more than UFS/UniVersus or Exceed.
I have just been getting into card games, so this video couldn't have come out at a better time
TCG based on other properties are always interesting.
You know I've never played Magic and I've only ever played Japanese TCGs, so I guess it isn't as unique as I thought haha
Thanks for the info
Yeah it's one of the things I really like about magi and its kind of funny that even games that were explicitly copying it like YGO never took that style of combat but this little video game based card game well after all these TCGs debuted decided to. Dead jealous of the SVC cards btw, after seeing those GG and Melty cards I might need to try making my own collection!
I loved this game so much. Played the heck out of it in the early 2000s.
Fun game, sucks that the switch version only lets you play mirror matches offline, the 2nd player just gets a copy of your deck instead of selecting a deck.
The SD style of the cards has always been charming to me.
WE NEED THIS GAME ON STEAM!!
I played this 15 years ago and it was Soo good, downloaded it on the switch and still love playing it
the neo geo pocket color really did deserve a longer life.(honestly prefer a lot of it to the gb.)
if/when we get a snk vs. capcom 3 would absolutely love it having a roster(even if it was npc's for a adventure mode or street fighter alpha 3 esque world tour.) like this as the series represented(like power stone, red earth, motw, maximum impact, resident evil, devil may cry, onimusha, nest saga when they strangely didn't show up in the other cvs, cyberbots, star gladiator and rival schools alongside the neat references to their character.:3) especially in ds as i remember these & match of the millennium interesting me more than the console fighting games being what really opened my love of snk/capcom's other series when i got into snk from playing kof at a laundry loving it at 1st play.
Wow shocked I didn't know about this thanks for the post :3
Wow im picking it up on the switch thank you so much for showing me this.
I think Teppen has some BoF stuff in it.
@@austinreed7343 Oh right. Still, that's a fairly recent one and makes one wonder what took so long.
Great video
When is the Teppen video?
Do you plan on doing a review video game for Phantom dust? It is basically a card game mixed with arena brawler that was on the original xbox and is free on pc through the xbox app
Phantom Dust is sick. I feel like it'd be right up his alley.
7:20 My man. I used to play 3rd Strike and pick Twelve in SA3 whenever I felt like screwing around or playing as Gill (at least for a while...)
love the video man. Keep up the good work.
I have an old video going over the Vampire Savior TCG, but admittedly I need to go back and do a better job of presenting them all in video!
@@GuileWinQuote I shall still do my duty and look at the old one because it still might be fascinating 😎👍
Certainly you've played UFS, right? Still my favorite card game, though it's lost a lot of its charm since it decided to focus purely on MHA. But yeah, before that, it was like a decade and a half of FGC franchises. Made a cube, pretty fun drafting game (when I can find people to play with)
The art for these games was amazing! I remember seeing it in high resolution in the official Darkstalkers artbook from all the three games
Yooo I noticed you used the yugioh spirit caller deck edit theme at the beginning of the vid, insane nostalgia trip for that song ❤
Your written English is better than many native speakers
I would check and see if somebody has translated Versus TCG or SvC in general to Tabletop Simulator. If Zatch Bell The Card Battle has a module then I wouldn't be shocked if this game does (PS please do a video on 8ing's Zatch Bell/Konjiki no Gash games and how the roster varied between regions because of the dub being behind).
Yeah there's a good cardfighters clash mod on TTS interpreting the original NGPC game.
That ash blossom jump scare when you said hand trap got a visceral reaction from me
definitely gonna pick these up, great video
I didn't know these games were a thing and now I'm playing them and loving them. Thank you so much for showing us these awesome games. 🤩🤩
We need this series to have a comeback!!
1000% *YES!*
At the very least they could add some SNK stuff to Teppen.
Cool video, I went ahead and decided to check the game out on Switch like you said.
Oh my god the yugioh world championship 2007 music that takes me back
Snk should sponsor this video because sales definitely gonna blow up
What a nostalgia trip! Used to emulate the first game to no end back in the day, finished both versions, then I had to wait for someone to translate the second game so I could also play it.
I still play this in my Switch when l can
The card art truly is fantastic.
The card art from the first game was a staple of early 2000s internet. You'd commonly see them used as forum avatars.
I played the heck out of Cardfighters Clash as a teenager. I was fortunate enough to actually own a NGPC back then. SVC: Match of the Millennium was also a blast!
I remember playing this on an emulator and it quickly became one of my favorite handheld games
Yooo music from the Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds games! Good taste. I wish there were more videos on those
The purely-Capcom Teppen could also be worth a mention.
I bought a NGPC about 15 years ago just to play this and Match of the Millennium.
Love that little handheld.
I still have both my copies of Capcom/SNK complete in box from back in the day, I love the NGPC.
I hope you cover more of the fighters on the NGPC. It has some amazing games.
"Ukyo straight up DIES when he attacks, because of his tuberculosis."
That hit me like a TRAIN, jesus christ 😭
Balrog using a computer with his gloves on killed me. Thanks. I guess I'm a ghost now doomed to wonder around forever.
I copped a small nostalgia-punch when I saw those cards... But unfortunately I can't remember where I saw them originally! Maybe in an old magazine
I recently picked up Neo Geo Pocket Collection 2 on the Switch and found this game.
It was incredible. Wish it was longer
