Would terrains allow you to get tile-perfect textures and slopes, though? They’re kind of designed to blend textures and have smooth terrain for more realistic-looking games, last I looked.
@@Tustin2121 That’s a good question. And to be honest, I’d need to look at terrains more to be sure. For textures, you could probably use a square brush to give off that feel, though I’m not sure how grid-like that can look without some sort of snapping or guideline to reference. As for elevated terrain, I think the biggest issue would indeed be the slopes. But I still think it would be better to use terrain as a base and then use probuilder objects as needed for slopes. Edit: I went into Unity to poke around with terrain. I thought using a square brush and turning down softness would allow for hard edges. Turns out I was wrong.
This is mind-blowing. I can't believe you did all this in such a short time. I've spent around 1.5 years creating a pokemon-like game in unity & tutorials on how to make it, but the project is still not complete.
It's the kind of thing that makes you realize why, when releasing on a yearly cycle, game freak does not add those "little touches" like giving every Pokemon unique animations for every attack. It's simply too much work in too little time.
This looks so cool. The battles with the flat pokemon actually looked better than I expected it to, because you don't lose the magic of the original sprites.
The interiors could be another part of the map that it's isolated from the rest of the world, like the Ghost Town of Grand Theft Auto 3, and surrounded with black walls like what you would see in Pokemon when you are in an interior and watch what is around the walls of any room. The doors and stairs would act as a teleporter to get to the corresponding interior.
I just wanted to say that you are one of my favorite creators, and that you really inspire me to get in to game design. Thanks so much for making amazing videos!
This looks amazing, and I actually loved that first attempt at Bulbasaur, the old games looked hideous, and we love them. Don't sell yourself short for not being perfect enough.
Would LOVE to see part 2 for this! Maybe you can include Red in the battle scene and include some environmental details to spruce it a little? Maybe as simple as those scattered grass tilesets from the overworld on the ground could help.
Honestly if this was a separate game with unique sprites and new pokemon, it would be ridiculously cool. I love the 3d world and the 2d sprites with the dynamic camera during battles
I can't even begin to express how beautiful I think this is. I have never considered something like this being possible and to see it in action is so impressive. You do some incredible work and your talent and practice definitely shine through with this. Please never stop creating content like this, let's get you to 500k!!
This is really cool! The only thing I’d recommend is to try and fill in the areas between the parts of the maps, even if it’s just all trees, it will add to the feeling of being able to see other cities in the distance. Also i think the mountains would look cool coming op over the trees
That’s it… I love this idea so much this seriously has the potential to be a fat “rom hack” I know it’s not a rom but still if you got other people to help in the areas you struggled in and recreated the whole red/blue game it would be one of the best “remakes” ever
Fun Fact! If you play Pokémon Red or Blue (Or any original Gameboy game for that matter!) on a Gameboy color, you can change the color pallet by pressing the directional buttons on the opening "Gameboy color" screen! You can also press the buttons in combination with A, B, Start and Select for ever more color options! Kinda like how you changed the color pallet!
Another fun fact is that if you play Pokemon Yellow on Gameboy Color the game actually has color. It isn't color like a normal GBC game but every town has a different color palette that matches the name of the town (Viridian, Pewter, Cerulean, etc...). The downside is that on the original Gameboy you could turn up the contrast while in Rock Tunnel and you would be able to see (barely) even without using Flash, on a Gameboy Color it is not possible to see in Rock Tunnel unless you have Flash.
@@WichidNixin If you play any of the games on the super game boy you get color palletes that change as you explore through the game, and each pokemon has a unique pallet.
Just notice this now and gotta say this looks dope and loved how you replace stuff like the cilindre “tooth” wall alike with trees and even the battle with all Pokémon’s going around has an desguise method to not giving much 2D paper Mario style was kinda nice😮
It would be insane if he did this for Gold/Sliver, I can imagine how legendary MT.Sliver could look like in a full 3D space. Loved it can’t wait to see the rest of the game and it would be dope if there could be a way to play it like through patrons. (even thought thats probably a stretch)
5:20 is the perfect way to demonstrate 2D vs 3D, 3D vs 4D. How extra dimensions literally open up new planes of reality for one to traverse. This is such a hard thing to demonstrate, but you did it perfectly without even trying!
@Mario a good way to think of the Dimensions is as follows: 0D = Point(s) 1D = Length, a line, X 2D = Width, lines converging at point(s), Y 3D = Depth, Z 4D = Tesseract, Trength (theoretical, unperceivable to our eyes), W This is an over simplification but a solid way to visualize it.
I came here to say how much I loved these. If he hadn't told us how much he struggled with making them 3D I'd have just thought this was a stylistic choice
Amazing recreation. Pokémon blue was my first game I played, ever. I’m not a huge fan of the franchise now but this triggers all the right nostalgia buttons. The sprites were literally part of the charm. I don’t care for newer graphics or whatever
Same here, i watched the first four episode of pokemon kanto on television and got a commercial for pokemon blue so i run towards the local gamestore and played the heck out off pokemon blue...the memories and nosta i will never forget.
This is amazing. Something that your shaders could benefit from is visual hierarchy. Meaning that you can dim down the colors of your tiles depending on how important they are to the navigation. The trees could be dimmed down a lot and not use black in them, but lighter gray tones so that they are not as visually overwhelming. Same for the water and the rocks on the cliff. If you start making a system of rules of how "important" each element is for the overall view or navigation, you can end up with a much better looking environment. The main character can be the one that has the most contrasting elements. And maybe the outline and doors of the houses and buildings could be on the same level. The walls and windows could be dimmed down a little bit. The grass can be at a very low level. Just opaque or contrasting enough so that it adds texture and you see that it's there if you pay attention, but that otherwise it just becomes part of the background and doesn't distract you from the actual game navigation. Basically using the principles of "value" in paintings.
Not gonna lie, yours and Reubs' videos of remaking old (and sometimes fairly recent) games in Unity and Unreal is really inspiring me to try these challenges. Not so much reinventing it in 3D or anything, but just trying to make a whole game without having to worry too much about the actual design aspects.
I absolutely love this series. Seeing these old school games get made into 3D and seeing your code work flow is an absolute treat. Please keep this series going!!!!
Blame the law, and the fact fighting a good legal battle is expensive. The law means he can't get you to pay for it, so he'd lose money anyways, and the law with copyright is so old that it doesn't adjust for modern times
@@illford yeah but he still sends it out to streamers, which would still be seen as distribution by the law. So its very flawed logic and makes these videos pointless in a way. Since you'll never see the fully finished product.
3:38 You could try to procedurally create grass object (or place the existing ones) by the colour of those tiles. Since you are working on grey scale it should be easier as well.
GOD HOW I WISHED THIS OR ANY PROPGRAMMER would make a HunterxHunter Game or at least a Mod for other games to use the Power-System hailed as the best Powersystem/Magic-System in all of Fiction ever: Nen! Slime-Tensei-Mods exist for Minecraft, but the best Power-System in all of Manga or even all of Fiction has only Rip-Off-Levels when it comes to Games and thier Quality, if you get what i mean. One could really make a lot, lot, lot of Money with this, cause so many would love to play with HxH and/or Nen.

This looks so cool. The battles with the flat pokemon actually looked better than I expected it to, because you don't lose the magic of the original sprites.
I'd love a part two to see a completed game! Building interiors would be crazy hard to make look good!
Seconded
@@Adri9570 you could just hide it under the floor. It's not like players need to go down there anyways.
And AWESOME
This was absolutely 100% worth the wait. This is incredible, thank you!!
I just wanted to say that you are one of my favorite creators, and that you really inspire me to get in to game design. Thanks so much for making amazing videos!
I agree
I agree too
This looks amazing, and I actually loved that first attempt at Bulbasaur, the old games looked hideous, and we love them. Don't sell yourself short for not being perfect enough.
Absolutely insane.
Funny thing, this is exactly how i imagined it as a kid. Sometimes imagination is better than the best graphics.
I would love part 2
I would love mustard
me too!
Dude this looks sick, I want a part 2!!!
no... we NEED a part 2!

I can't even begin to express how beautiful I think this is. I have never considered something like this being possible and to see it in action is so impressive. You do some incredible work and your talent and practice definitely shine through with this. Please never stop creating content like this, let's get you to 500k!!
Scary to imagine the amount of time spent, but respect for the remake of Pokemon (ne of my favorite universes)

This is so cool! Thank you for making videos like this!!

I used to watch this dude as a kid, ayyyy
This is really cool! The only thing I’d recommend is to try and fill in the areas between the parts of the maps, even if it’s just all trees, it will add to the feeling of being able to see other cities in the distance. Also i think the mountains would look cool coming op over the trees
That’s it… I love this idea so much this seriously has the potential to be a fat “rom hack” I know it’s not a rom but still if you got other people to help in the areas you struggled in and recreated the whole red/blue game it would be one of the best “remakes” ever
Definitely, it would be interesting to have an actual inside of a gym and pokemon center/mart
I'd definitely buy it.
THIS! 💯 make it happen! Can we do a kickstarter or something?
This is amazing!!! The sheer amount of nostalgia from this was blessed
This is the coolest Pokémon related thing I may have ever seen … it’s staggering the amount of work you put into this …
yes but one cannot play it so f this.
wait until you see the dude building a cable that allows you to trade pokemon between Gen 1 and 2 and Gen 3.
Dude, you put so much effort into that overworld. I’d love to 3D print it.
me too man
@DON'T CLICK THIS VIDEO Ratio + L. Screw off.
The Pokémon battles look really good and it’s a good, creative way to get around limitations. Good job!
Yes
It would be insane if he did this for Gold/Sliver, I can imagine how legendary MT.Sliver could look like in a full 3D space. Loved it can’t wait to see the rest of the game and it would be dope if there could be a way to play it like through patrons. (even thought thats probably a stretch)
Heart Gold Soul Silver already did it
There is a first person hack of the OG gold and silver that this reminded me of

I would definitely love a part two for this project! Having the entirety of Gen 1’s original sprites remade into 3D would be absolutely amazing!
5:20 is the perfect way to demonstrate 2D vs 3D, 3D vs 4D. How extra dimensions literally open up new planes of reality for one to traverse. This is such a hard thing to demonstrate, but you did it perfectly without even trying!
@Mario a line
@Mario a good way to think of the Dimensions is as follows:
0D = Point(s)
1D = Length, a line, X
2D = Width, lines converging at point(s), Y
3D = Depth, Z
4D = Tesseract, Trength (theoretical, unperceivable to our eyes), W
This is an over simplification but a solid way to visualize it.
This is such an incredible passion project! Great effort! :D
The Pokemon battle simulation you made with the 3D camera and Paper Mario style "flips" brought me immense joy and a massive smile on my face
I came here to say how much I loved these. If he hadn't told us how much he struggled with making them 3D I'd have just thought this was a stylistic choice
The most impressive part of this is how much respect you've shown for the original art direction.
Amazing recreation. Pokémon blue was my first game I played, ever. I’m not a huge fan of the franchise now but this triggers all the right nostalgia buttons. The sprites were literally part of the charm. I don’t care for newer graphics or whatever
Same blue has so many good memories
I would love if we could get the sprites back as well. The 3D is far less appealing to me.
Same Andrew, we’re showing our age here haha
Same here, i watched the first four episode of pokemon kanto on television and got a commercial for pokemon blue so i run towards the local gamestore and played the heck out off pokemon blue...the memories and nosta i will never forget.
The 2d sprites looked epic and the 3d sprites looked tragic.
This looks like a ton of fun. The full combat system sounds like the most trouble.
While true, it's also VERY frustrating that you don't get to share the fruits of your labour due to copyright, so be careful with that path 😅
You could just distribute without much fanfare. Like you’d only post the link here or on the dark web or something.
@@iantaakalla8180 Sure, always ways to do it, but then you can't put your name on it or face consequences, etc. It's just far from ideal.
I absolutely love this series. Seeing these old school games get made into 3D and seeing your code work flow is an absolute treat. Please keep this series going!!!!
As a noob who cant even draw a stick figure.... this looks freaking amazing. Well done 👍👍
The Monochrome Colour Selection was the best decision you could've ever made! LOVE IT its sooo reminiscent of the original games!
it is an absolute tragedy that all your work can't even be played by us, but a part two where everything gets finished would still be awesome!
Blame the law, and the fact fighting a good legal battle is expensive. The law means he can't get you to pay for it, so he'd lose money anyways, and the law with copyright is so old that it doesn't adjust for modern times
@@illford so if it was free everything would be gucci
@@illford yeah but he still sends it out to streamers, which would still be seen as distribution by the law. So its very flawed logic and makes these videos pointless in a way. Since you'll never see the fully finished product.
This is great! Do a part 2, because these projects take time to really finish up.
that was a lot of hard work for a beloved classic, thanks.
I consider Gen 1, an important part of my childhood
this is absolutely insane. the amount of work you put in to this is incredible.
And FAAAARRRR more care and effort than GameFreak has put into a game in a long time sadly...

3:38 You could try to procedurally create grass object (or place the existing ones) by the colour of those tiles. Since you are working on grey scale it should be easier as well.
GOD HOW I WISHED THIS OR ANY PROPGRAMMER
would make a HunterxHunter Game or at least a Mod for other games to use the Power-System hailed as the best Powersystem/Magic-System in all of Fiction ever:
Nen!
I love Pokémon games because of how relaxing and laid back they were
This would be like the Pokemon equivalent of Octopath Traveler almost, well done.
Would absolutely love this to get finished and completely playable! Eagerly awaiting part 2 :)
