The best UMX Timbex X Review I've seen so far! I like your style, straight to the point! No boring cicles paths, You really tested until the limits of the model desing! I still believe it is excelent aerobatic plane, considering it size!!
Thanks man! That's what this channel is all about. Flying in a circle is not a "review", it's an advertisement. Products can't be truly reviewed unless their potential is explored. Airplanes do more than fly in big circles - models like this are capable of a lot of maneuvers and people who choose to review them should at least be able to demonstrate those maneuvers in order to legitimately call it a review instead of product placement.
Kick butt flying. Just had mine out for the maiden two days ago. Love the 3s power over the regular umx turbo timber. These UMX planes do so much for the hobby, accessible and allow you to fly nearer to the public, always a positive response when they see a plane the size of a shoebox fly like it does. Again, awesome flight 🙏
Absolutely. I'm sure the profit margin is good on them too, plus they're generally pretty affordable for most people. It's win-win in my book. Thanks man!
Such a fun time watching you fly as usual! I wish there were more reasons to get a umx plane myself but with a big enough field closer than any small parks I have zero excuses.
That's fortunate, huh? I live in a forest so it's not possible for me to fly jets or fast props at my home. Even my big Turbo Timber is pushing it. The most I can do is knife edge circles and hovering before throttling out and landing.
Best review of this plane I have seen. You even make it look good on the hat cam. Watching the other reviews, I was going to pass on this plane and now your video really makes me want to get one. Grow channel grow!! To the Moon!!!!!!!!!
That's OK - I wasn't totally satisfied with the footage from the lake because of the wind so I took it out to the park later on in the vid. Be sure you see that so you know how it performs in low winds.
@@TwoBrosRC I did watch it all. Maybe you can share your mixes for it? Might be helpful down the line, so far I often forget to trun of my flaps 😀, but who knows.
I could be a whole lot better, too, but I really appreciate the feedback. It's not going to be the end-all of UMX flying, but it is fun to buzz around in and it does many things that are reminiscent of the full sized Timber X.
I'm with you Bill... love my UMX TT, but just not interested in this UMX Timber X. Horizon is supposed to be launching quite a few new planes later this year, I'm sure they'll get my money one way or another. 😂
Best flying I have seen of one of these. I really wanted one but its got a lot criticism on RC Groups which put me off. I was hoping it would be a good slow flier like the full size X but some people are saying this is not a STOL plane because it flies heavy. This is a shame if its true because the principle of the full size X is shorter span but longer chord to give the best of both worlds but having said that, you flew it fine.
One thing you'll learn quickly as you progress in aviation is that RC Groups is not the end-all, be-all of everything. A lot of people there don't know what they don't know. If I'd listened to RCG when people told me the Viper 90mm couldn't high alpha, my channel intro wouldn't be the Viper 90mm performing high alpha. ;) The only way to truly find out for yourself is to fly the model and see what it's capable of. I knew going into it that it would be heavy for its size, but it flies fine when you modify it a little and use the flaperons to assist with harriers and max out control throws. It's a good little model that just requires some awareness of how airplanes fly at any scale. If you're flying it slow without enough throttle or you're yanking it around in high-G maneuvers, it'll stall. Any airplane will unless the wing loading is so light that it can just float forever.
@@TwoBrosRC Thats why I am glad I watched your video on this plane. Ive already got the Timber, Turbo Timber, J3 Cub, Waco, Beast 3d, P3 Revolution, Cessna and Mustang all in UMX size so I am sure I could work with this X. Thanks for putting my mind at rest.
I set my battery placement per the addendum provided (56mm from the leading edge) and slow, scale type flight is a nono! Drops like a rock low or no power! Gonna move the battery up against the motor mount and try that. Probably lose a lot of 3D action, but mainly wanting the slow scale flight like the UMX Turbo Timber. Thanks Jon, for the fine review! Wished I had your skills!😁
Thank you for including your stick inputs! I am a beginner with lots of flight time; seeing the inputs is very helpful! Great review! Can’t believe you started your maiden voyage with a hand launch over the lake…. So if I buy this plane I can fly like this? 😊
Unfortunately, skills are sold separately! But we do have several "learn to fly 3D" tutorials posted over the years, along with useful landing and takeoff advice for newer pilots.
Great flying, I’ve learned a lot from your videos! You should check out the Pitts 850 from EFlite, I’d love to see what you could do with it. I know it’s been out for a while but that plane is very capable on 4S. All you have to do is add better servos, give it full throws and let it rip. The power to weight ratio is insane.
@@TwoBrosRC I thought the same thing until I flew it, it will surprise you for sure. I have the 1400mm from FMS and I love it but I think that’s more of the looks that got me with that plane. There’s just something about a biplane that looks amazing in the sky. I thought I remembered you having the 1400 and a battery eject problem but can’t remember for sure if that was you. Either way keep it up I enjoy all your videos, I just wish I had that IX20 so I could follow the programming videos a bit easier. That Pitts 850 is as close as I’ve gotten to a UMX so far but it has opened my eyes about how much fun a smaller plane can be so there may be one in the future for me. I’m still a newer pilot but making progress daily, I’m not much of a 3D pilot but I’m trying to learn, more of a sport flyer for now with a few tricks. Again, love the videos, especially when you show the stick movements so I can learn!
@@howiedenton2709 I had a set of A380’s setting around that I threw in it. For some reason Horizon put metal gear servos in the ailerons and then put super cheap plastic gear analog servos in the tail servos on this plane. I mean really what did they save $5? Anyway it flies better in my opinion with those servos. If you get it make sure you do something to the battery tray to secure it, after my comment the other day about the 1400 ejecting the battery tray I took this out did the command for a crankshaft and the battery ended up on top of the tail servos. I knew instantly what happened, hovered great, flew like crap and landed even worse. Did my best to aim for the tall grass and set it down as nicely as possible. I had to straighten the landing gear but that was all which is a major success in my opinion if you could have seen how it flew.
Do you think a 450 mAh battery would shift the CG more favorably? Would add weight to an already heavy bird, but might balance and stabilize a few 3D maneuvers? And the extra flight time is always welcomed. Great flyin as usual Jon!
Thank you so much for that honest review. It was because of this review I chose to make a last night purchase. I went for the new Timber UMX Evolution instead of this one. Had the multiplex fun Cub years ago and thinking this would be similar but, for someone who just wants to learn hovering only, can anyone recommend if there's such a thing of a UMX hovering 3D easy to break out in confined areas?
For the people still wanting some STOL performance from this little gem, get the slats from the umx turbo timber evolution and shorten them up. Attach to the little X and boom, she flies like a totally different plane
Sooo...quick question..I'm having an extremely hard time flying this plane...it wants to shoot straight up, I have rhe battery as forward as I can, and I actually have to flu this with the flaps pointing up and rudder steer only...what am I doing wrong?
Hey Jon it's been a long time I know awesome job on all of the flights maybe the reason it's not hovering well is the lipo needs to be slightly move to the nose? Or maybe you could mix a flaperon elevator mix in which when you apply elevator the flap moves the opposite direction if you know what I mean?
It appears that the right propeller was on backward. That was the problem haha. We'll shoot it again soon on floats which is where all the fun really happens anyhow. Good to see you again man!
@@3DMOFO2020 I mean I'm literally dumb sometimes. I thought you were talking about the EC-1500 vid. I could swear that's why I responded the way I did. The UMX Timber X wasn't hovering as well because it was just too nose heavy the way I was flying it. I just took it out in the cul-de-sac and set the battery as far back as it would go and it was significantly more hover-stable. I also moved the ball link on the elevator in to the innermost hole and trimmed it out mechanically for level flight.
I was flying mine at the field this morning, sun still low on the horizon. Lost plane in the sun, blinded pretty well. Lost track, it got behind the runway, over the hill and out of site of us. There is about a half mile behind us of medium size brush up and over the hill to the closest structures. Sad loss. Already being replaced.
Always go waaaay further than you think it is. I lost My night Timber at night and looked a mile away. Almost gave up and we decide to look one more road over and found it. Was 2 miles away. Blew my mind. landed itself and we went home and flew 2 more batteries threw it.
You fly this plane well and it seems well suited to your style. To me a Timber is about STOL, high prop diameter low RPM pulling torque rather than small diameter high RPM power, and very low airspeed floating control. It seems Quique put Horizon on a path where every plane has to be a frantic, high roll rate screamer. Even a Bush plane. It’s a weird contradiction since a high wing with dihedral is never going to excel in that genre, but the heavy EPO and high RPM power pretty much commits you to it.
Pretty much. It has a lot of potential that I'm still figuring out. In the meantime, it does fly well if you fly it anticipating that it needs at least some airspeed to make banked turns without dropping the inboard wing.
Man, I hope you're sponsored because your videos sell planes. I bought the Turbo Timber Evolution after watching you, and now I want this! Question: Is there a better UMX or sub 1.2m plane you would recommend as a "mild to wild" flyer?
That's great to hear! I am sponsored but not by any major company. I work with my local hobby shop to promote models - this one was one of them. I'm not aware of any models that might be crazier than this one except for the UMX Pitts which you might want to check out as well.
