Never gets old, but I do hear a difference with when I played back in the early 90s. Instead of concert B-flat instruments we played on (when we came to drum corps) key of G horns. It really made the sound sweeter, more entertaining and audience friendly due to the bigger bores on the smaller instruments. But, DCI made this rule change in 2000 and believe the activity as a WHOLE has suffered ever since. Money can keep the business going, but the LOVE of money can kill the purpose of the intent and direction of the activity. My interest in drum corps has sadly left me like a kid who has been put in a corner for bad behaviour. I have few good things to say because I am just disappointed. Just look at the past ten years. See who has been on top mostly and why. Too much rigging going on (with scores and biases). I'm ashamed. 😢
So you and I marched in the transition to 3 valves. I remember the complaints back then. DCI didn't say corps had to switch keys; it said they could. For that matter, DCI never said corps had to go to 3 valves. Star never did before taking their ball and going home. The Marines just got a new set of 3-valve (for the first time) G horns. Some praise them for staying G but others freak out about 3 valves and microphones and am amplified pit with a synth. Stop being a dinosaur and support the corps of today and don't be the guy who grumbles about your 3 valves.
