I tried to learn to crochet for years with a simple metal hook, and I just couldn’t do it. I bought a Clover Amour and it was a whole new world! I’m now crocheting a baby blanket! 🤩

What I love about Chandi is I remember there was ONE video in the past where a lot of people said there wasn't enough crochet content and patterns being released and these guys just immediately did something about it. Now you see them releasing more crochet stuff at a much more even amount with the knitting stuff and I love it! And I am not even a crocheter! I appreciate that she really listens, responds, and cares about her EFA followers and customers. I'm loving the crochet respect even though I knit.

For years I used the simple, inexpensive Susan Bates aluminum hooks. Then I fell in love with the rainbow wooden beauty of a set from Knit Picks.
Ultimately, I am now using the Furls hooks as my mild arthritis in my hand was not liking the small grip of the other hooks. My favorite of the Furls are the simple wooden ones: lightweight with a shape that did not exacerbate my hand discomfort 😊. The metal ones were too heavy and the resin ones were squeaky and too grabby. The basic streamline wooden ones were just right (do I sound like Goldilocks??)
Also, thanks for posting your bloopers, lol. Seeing how much it takes to put together a short video shows you being even more down to earth than we already see on your lives. Your joy in your (and your husband’s) work shines through ❤.

For me the Japanese Etimo Tulip crochets are the most comfortable I have ever used, I can crochet for hours without my hands cramping or feeling tired, they come in a nice case. Expensive but a treat to own.

I’ve spent a lot of money trying new hooks including and entire set of Furls. After all those, I found the Clover Amour and I’ll never need another hook.
When I first started crocheting (I’m a knitter) I preferred inline hooks as I needed the steep cut in to grab the yarn. As my skill and speed have increased I prefer a tapered head.
    You’re adorable! I love the outtakes 😂

Once I found Clover Amour I was in love. I think I have them in nearly every size they offer now. I have the Susan Bates in almost every size as well. I like the light-up ones you showed because I often work with dark/black yarn, seems like it would make it easier to see what I'm doing (here in the PNW where it's dark and rainy so much doesn't help). Loved seeing all the different sets you found.

My first hooks were Boye...I hated using them and almost gave up learning from frustration. Then I got my first Susan Bates hook and actually enjoyed crocheting with the sharper head. I recently invested in some Clover Amour and love them. So smooth to use with almost any yarn. Of the ones you showed, I think that animal ended set is adorable.

The very first set I bought was the ergonomic one you showed in the bag with the darning needles and stitch markers. (Those needles are still my favorites!) But I was told that the Clover Amour set was better, so I used a 50% off coupon from JoAnn or Michaels to buy a 6 mm hook. What an improvement! I assembled the rest of the set that way, one at a time, using coupons or finding them on sale on Amazon.

I discovered quite by accident what one of my biggest issues with crochet was for decades. Bad tools. I went with trying to save money & had a number of Bates and Boyle hooks. By my 7th or 8th try at crochet in 2014 I finally got to the point where they worked ok. But it took forgetting the hook for the project I packed to take on a trip to VT and stopping at WEBS that I bought my first Skacel Addi Comfort Grip hook. Wow! What a difference it made. The grip (I am a knife-holder), the smooth chrome coating and just the right amount of point. When I got back home I went on-line in search of the rest of the set. It cost me $65 but to this day I do not regret the purchase one bit.

Best bloopers yet! Tim's laugh is so infectious, LOL!! I ADORE Susan Bates hooks. I learned crochet on tapered hooks but once I tried Susan Bates, it's inline all the way for me. I have all the sizes in the regular hooks but after a while, I noticed my hand got tired because there wasn't enough hook to hold on to and the length would always stab me in my palm. So I bought all the sizes in the bamboo handle version that I use the most so they are my go-to hooks daily. I like the shorter shaft and hold like a knife and the additional length of the bamboo doesn't stab my hand so way more comfy.

Hi Chandi! You two are so funny! Thanks for starting my weekend off with laughter! I hope you’re feeling ok. You sound a bit under the weather. You sure did find a lot of good hook sets to share with us. Those big metal ones look interesting. Will definitely be checking them out. I’d have to say I love my Clover Amour Hooks and my Tulip Etimo although I started out learning with Susan Bates and used them for years. I actually try out different hooks when starting each pattern. In-line verses Tapered because sometimes one type works much better depending on the yarn and stitch pattern. The shawl by Jane is beautiful! I love the shape and design. Thanks for another great video! Happy Friday to you and Tim and enjoy your weekend!💞

What a great collection! I used a basic aluminum set for about 40 years before I found out about ergonomic hooks. I use knife grip and found the lighter weight yarns and corresponding hooks difficult to use. Tried 1 Clover Amour and within a week I was hunting down sales for the mid sized set and the larger individual hooks. I now have a set of their interchangeable bamboo knitting needles and Tunisian crochet hooks thanks to my Christmas wish lists.

I used to use Susan Bates all the time, but now I use my Clover hooks more than any others. I do still love Susan Bates, but the handle on the Clover hooks is so nice! I have one from Furls and it's great but took some getting used to. I also have several plastic hooks I bought from Hobby Lobby that they unfortunately no longer carry but they were different colors and the handles were really fun.

Knit Pro zings aluminum ones are my go to faves! I also love my Susan Bates (I bought them bcoz of you Chandi, I loved the look of them on ur vids & asked you a few years ago what hooks they were & after u replied I went & got some!). I did buy some lace size (0.5mm to 2.0mm set) bamboo handle ones (handles are kinda flattened) & they're fantastic for crocheting lace work & doilies/ filet crochet etc 🙂 im in NZ so hooks are expensive here so I saved up & bought in Clover lace size hooks from the US & they're def worth the money 🤑

For sixty years and forever a Susan Bates fan. I crochet with a pencil hold and those aluminum hooks with the flat mouth are the BEST. I have several of the other sets you showed, which I bought from some of the same reasons 🥰, but I always come back to the Susan Bates. For new crocheters, who gravitate to the pencil hold, those wide handles are much harder to use, but they are mostly great to hold on to when you use the knife hold. Thank you so much for showing off your crochet hooks. How about interchangeable knitting needles next? ❤

this was one FUN video!! I never knew there were so many choices and so glad you shared them. I try some of my fancier hooks now and then and always end up using my Susan Bates. I also change how I hold my hook back and forth throughout every project, I think it's good for my hand to switch. While I'm here, just want to say that I buy more yarn from EFA than any other company and getting anxious to begin the LATO shawl ... Yay! Take care!

Chandi! Heaven’s to Betsy🤭 I love how you and Tim are so silly! I look forward each week for new patterns and/or tips… not to mention the blooper 😂 I don’t think I am alone on this! I have so many different styles of crochet hooks and needles. My husband has called me Goldilocks because I have so many sets! I now know my go to for the most part is ChiaoGoo because of the cords and the slick needles. I also have a set of bamboo needles for the extra slippery yarns where a needle can easily drop out😬! As for hooks, I was an avid Susan Bates fan. Now I pretty much use Tulip hooks because I love the feel in my hand, length of shaft and grippy handles. I think the one that counts stitches looks very interesting. I am so bad at keeping track and slow myself down by constantly going back and counting each stitch. I know you reviewed it, but can you or anyone else that have used it let me know if it is worth it? Sorry for this long winded comment 😬❤️

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts  Рік тому

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. As for the digital counting hook set, in my opinion it seemed like a lot of extra stuff that probably wouldn't speed up my crochet personally. But you might be totally different! If keeping count is a challenge for you, you might want to just start with a stand-alone digital row counter that would do the same thing. That way, you don't have as much money invested in it.

What a fun video to watch!!! I have always used Susan Bates hooks with no problems, then when you showed us the Sarayu shawl, I tried the hook in the flowery bag. I like the grip on those but my stitches are just a little bigger than Susan Bates hooks. But I NEED the ones that count for me. That's the thing I hate doing most and it gets me in a lot of trouble, counting the stitches. Counting rows no problem, but the stitches over 150 messes me up.
Maybe you can share any secrets to counting in a fun and accurate way. Thanks once again for being such a delightful soul!

    • @ExpressionFiberArts
      @ExpressionFiberArts  Рік тому

Great, to hear that you enjoyed the video.
The only thing that I can think of (to make counting more accurate) is to place markers every 20 sts. This way you only have to recount a max of 20 if something goes wrong. Sorry that I don't have a better suggestion.
      Have a nice weekend. 🥰

I love my Clover Amour hooks, I think I have ALL the sizes. Recently I was introduced to Prym, and bought a set of the large hooks on Amazon, and so far so good, but I'm not sure I like them as well as my Clovers...

I love the style head that the Susan Bates has. This style seems to get hung up less when it's time to pull through the stitches. It's what works for me.

I've been crocheting for a long time and I've been given a lot of crochet hooks from friends and family plus every now and then found a hook or two in a skein of yarn I've been given. I've found that I'm pretty adaptable with all different types. I do tend to prefer Susan Bates or Boye best.

I’ve tried several different kinds of hooks. My favorites are Susan Bates or Furls. If my project is with fingering yarn I prefer Susan Bates with a handle on it.

My very favorite hooks are the Clover Amour hooks with Tulip Etimo Reds being a close second. Not quite as good as the Clovers, but almost.

😂...just turn the lights off. Oh what ever should I do?😂That was priceless. I'm a pencil style holder, but like you, I also change the way I hold the hook depending on the stitch. I find it works best for me if I grab the hook instead of pencil style when I do foundation sc, dc etc. I love my clover gold hooks. You can grab them or hold as a pencil. Take care of your cough.

I have the sets that you show that come in the flowered zipper bag with stitch markers and darning needles. I use them exclusively though I have other miscellaneous Bates and others given to me. I have been looking to get the lighted hook fir when I'm doing dark colors, even with the light on I think it will help me see the right stitch. 🧐🤣😅♥️

That's a good point about the lighted hooks. They'd be great for working with darker yarns, especially at night.

I'm 70 years old, and I still use metal crochet hooks. I've got all my Mom's hooks and use them. When I need to buy a certain size, I buy the metal ones, usually at Joann Fabrics. I also find hooks at Goodwill stores and second hand places. I pick them up and add them to my hook collection. I am intrigued by the looks of a lot of them. I really like the look of the fancy wood ones or the marble effects ones, but I stick to the metal ones.

Becasue of how I hold my hook, Susan Bates have always been my favorite. However, some of the newer ones don't seem to be quite as well made. They are sharp at the open end of the hook. Also like the Boye metal hooks.

Thank you Annie. Glad you enjoyed making Palette. Unfortunately we don't offer our videos in other languages but you can try this trick:
Turn on closed captions, and click on the Settings (the gear icon). Choose Subtitles/CC and to the right of that there is a language option. Use that to select Auto-Translate, and then choose French. UA-cam will automatically translate the closed captions for you.
      Enjoy! 🥰
