I have a set of Prym Ergonomics and I’m so relieved to find someone else who doesn’t get on with them. I was so confused when I saw so many good reviews for them. Than you so much for the honesty in this review. I will be gifting the Prym hooks and watching a lot more of your videos!

I just bought 3 in my most commonly used sizes. I wish I’d only bought one to start with as I don’t like them at all. I really like the size and shape but they really squeak and they are not smooth

They are great when i am teaching. The drag helps newbs with their tension. I love these hooks shape so much but the drag kills me! Every so often they'll work with a super smooth yarn.

I love my black gold Tulip Etimo… the quality of the entire hook, smoothness of the metal and comfort of the handle is amazing! For reference, I have fairly small hands and learned on old, aluminum Bates hooks.

Judging a hook on its looks rather than how well it works seems kinda silly ;). Having said that, I agree with your assessment of the Clover Amour EXCEPT I'd put them in the top category along with the Tulip hooks. Furls I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Overpriced, over-hyped and the tapered shaft can make a mess of stitches with a less experienced crocheter. I will agree they are pretty, but if I don't like how they work, they go ;) I feel that those that choose a Clover over a Tulip and vice versa depends on whether you're a knife gripper (Clover works better, generally) or a pencil gripper (Tulip is probably better for you).

I love my Pryms. I do hear them squeak especially with cotton yarn but that doesn't bother me. I like that the shaft is long, the hook is not too sharp, hook is light and well balanced for my knife hold, texture works well with the yarn I generally use and my stitching. I noticed that your faves in general have a bit shorter shaft and heavier. I also like that your picks are consistent. Except maybe I wouldn't have rated the 'unicorn' hook Furls Odyssey unless I tried it. But eh, what ifs are fun. Plastic hooks aren't for everybody.

I have bigger man hands & the smaller Clover handles poke the inside of my palms. PRYM hooks R a gift with a knife hold. I can relate 2 how good the Clovers R & every1 loves them. It's like The having a used Toyota car. Yeah it squeaks, makes some weird noises, doesn't drive as smooth as a Mercedes, but it takes me 2 work daily & is super reliable & comfortable enough 2 drive. Sometimes good is good enough.

I just recently started crocheting and have bought several types and brands of hooks. I had a lot of problems with each of them for different reasons and almost stopped several times as a result. I ordered the Pryms due to a few reviews I saw on YT and Im glad I did. Totally different world of experience. It was like the clouds parted and the angels sang Hallelujah! LOL. They glide like butter. I now have the complete set of them. My next purchase will be a set of the Clover Amours.

Growing up in the 70s, when I learned to crochet I was definitely in the Boye camp and NOT Susan Bates. As I’ve gotten older I’ve tried to move to a lighter weight hook to help with my hand and wrist issues. I am a plus size woman with larger hands. My current fave are the Clover Amour hooks. I bought the whole set at JoAnn using coupons. Actually I bought 2 sets that way. Yesterday I received a Tulip Etimo Red hook, K/6.5mm, from Amazon. I like it but I’m not sure I like it better than the Clover Amour. I have to use it for a while to decide. I have some Furls hooks, 3 kinds. I need to use them some more to know how I really feel about them. Since I’m headed to Michaels this afternoon, I’m going to pick up a Prym hook and a Loops & Threads ergonomic aluminum hook to try out.

Susan Bates was my first crochet hook because my grandma always used them. They are a great beginner set for sure- but once you decide you are hooked in crochet and will always crochet- you will find yourself trying other hooks and seeing the difference
I upgraded to clover amour and tulip- I’ve knocked minutes off my time per row. I fly through rows now. They are sooooooo smooth! There is much more drag with the Susan Bates-
So you will definitely want to upgrade to a better crochet 🧶 and it’s worth it if you are crocheting a lot

The Odyssey is beautiful however I found it to be much too heavy to use so it just sits here looking pretty. I do love the Tulip hooks though. My first set was the pink ones and they😅 my go-to hooks along with the Clover Amour.

🧶Agree with a lot of this ! I haven’t used all these hooks (all the I’m hooked category 😂 ). I love the clover amour hooks, especially the aluminum smaller ones, but I don’t get why the larger hooks are plastic? Like give me big metallic clover amour hooks 😅 The clover amour and prym ergonomics are the best plastic hooks I’ve used, but I would avoid plastic hooks all together if I could. I also picked up the crochet lite hook before, thinking it was such a cool concept and it just didn’t work. The hook is too blunt and the light just doesn’t help. But I would go for a light up hook that works.

I agree with you on the Prym hooks. After all the raves and hype I'd heard about them, I was so excited to buy myself a set for Christmas only to discover that I really don't like them! Not only was the friction on the yarn unpleasant, but the handles are really uncomfortable. It rubbed my thumb and the outer side of my palm, and I didn't look forward to picking up my hook anymore because of how sore those spots on my hand were. I also really didn't like the fact that they were only marked with the US letter sizes instead of metric, but that's just because I'm more familiar with the metric. I actually ended up returning them and bought myself some basic Susan Bates hooks that are much more comfortable for my grip.

  • @pearl_b

ok first off... GIRL regular aluminum hooks and clover amour in the same tier?? HOW?? Also, I agree about the plastic hooks. Not a fan. But I also like different kinds of hooks for different projects and different kinds of yarns. Like recently I discovered that resin hooks for chanile yarn slides like BUTTER and it's so nice to work with. Otherwise, totally agree with your rankings.

Because they are so expensive and I am so picky- I have bought about 1 a year (Christmas present to self 😊). But it is frustrating that when I am in the mood to buy it’s out of stock. But- they are the best I have ever tried for ergonomics, smooth crocheting and beauty. A pleasure to use.

Good video! Part of the reason why I love the Clover Amour hooks is because of the hook part itself. I love the tapered hook and have a very difficult time with the inline hooks like the Susan Bates ones. That really informs which hooks I love. I have a hard time with any bamboo hooks as well as the wood for the same reason -- especially bad if it's humid. Haven't tried many hook brands because I love the Clover Amour but on my Christmas wishlist is always one of the Furls hooks. :)

🧶As a new crocheter, you've given me some thought on where to go with my next hook purchase. Thank you! I absolutely MUST have one of the Furls hooks, they are so pretty!!
I get what you're saying about the Prymm hooks. The "squeak" (not really a squeak, but the best way I can describe what it feels like) of the drag doesn't bother me as much as I would expect it to, and I like everything else about it so I'm overlooking the downsides for the good, but I can definitely see how a lot of people might not be able to use it for that reason. I have found that I don't like the thin aluminum hooks, because I tend to grip them too tightly and it hurts my hands when I'm crocheting but have definitely added a few more to try out.

  • @jackiet8568

Loved this video. I learned to crochet about 17 years ago, but I'm just picking it up again. So much has changed! Well except for the Susan Bates Aluminum hooks lol. I think your ranking was pretty spot on... Except for the Loops and Threads Ergonomic Aluminum Hook. I will say that I really liked this hook when I bought it, but after using it about 5 times, the hook started to twist in the handle (if that makes sense) since I hold my hook like a knife I like to put my thumb on the indented spot on the handle. So when the hook started twisting it was making it difficult to crochet with it. I would have put this in the Cro-Shame category. I replaced it with a Yarnology Aluminum hook, not the one you reviewed in the video. It's the Ergonomic Crochet Hook. Some things I liked about it are: Price! It' was only $1.99 I also like that the size of the hook was embossed into the hook and wont rub off like my Loops & Threads hood did. So annoying, when that happened I couldn't remember what size the dang hook was. It also just feels nice in my hand. I know how you feel about Yarnology, but I encourage you give this one a try. :) I have purchased a Clover Amour hook that everyone loves, but haven't taken it out of the package yet. lol

🧶Great video. I hope you do add to this list because I love to watch videos on hooks and yarns. I like Prym hooks, I'm a slow crocheter and the yarn doesn't slip as much for me because I guess for the reason why you don't like it, there's a grab to it. And also I find the tip is super pointy so it gets into the stitches easier. But with that being said, I just got a set of Furls streamline and I haven't picked up my Prym since. What a great list. I have tried so many hooks and I agree with your top tier. I actually only have one Tulip Etimo in the pink and I love it. I bought it because I didn't want to work on an amigurumi piece with a resin hook. Already broke one and did not want to do that again. However, I tend to really love my resin hooks. I have noticed that my wrists and hands hurt less when I stick with them. I have several Ommi hooks and one Divit Shilp that I love. (Amazon), They are very comparable to Furls in type and length. But, I just got three Ophire hooks and I absolutely love them. The price point is reasonable. and they are beautiful. They are a bit shorter then the Furls type. That works out great for me because I tend to choke up on the neck of my Furls anyway, so it makes it more natural and balanced to hold. I also like to support smaller businesses, like Furls and Ophire. Anyway, I would love to see more hook reviews.

I have watched your video twice, as I find this topic very interesting. I think the preference in hook also depends on your crochet style, maybe. I am still a novice in this game, though, so I am not experienced enough to have an opinion. I use a pencil hold when I crochet, and from what I understand it is not the most common one? Most videos I see are with knife hold 🧶🧶 I am tempted by Clover soft touch and Clover amour to see the difference between them. They are easily available where I live. Tulip Etimo not so much. I have used a cheaper brand so far that works just fine, but my curiosity is alive and well 😊 Thanks again 😊

My favorite hooks are the Clover Amour. I love how they just slide through the yarn. The only downside is that I wish that they were a little bit longer. Sometimes, if I've been crocheting a lot, it feels like the end is rubbing on my hand & it's irritating. My second favorite are the Prym hooks and I love the length and the way that they fit in my hand. The Prym do drag a little on some yarns, but glide fairly well through others. I believe that it is a personal choice. We are all different people and have different outlooks on things.

🧶 I can’t really give an opinion on any of the ones you included in your ranking. As someone who pretty much only has Walmart readily available regarding physical stores, I have only ever tried out Boye and Susan Bates. I’m not a big fan of Susan Bates hooks. I always find that my yarn gets split as I use them, they just don’t work for me at all. Boye, however, is my bestie! Big fan! Super smooth work, rarely splits yarn while using the hook, the spot for your thumb is perfect. I never get wrist pain with Boye. And I’m talking the regular hooks, I haven’t tried the ergonomic style yet. I’m plain and simple.

  • @blj315

I find my Furls resin hooks drag a little when using a yarn that has any acrylic or other manmade fiber in it. I also think the head is a little too rounded and the throat is not deep enough. I have ordered their new metal hooks and have high hopes for them, tho! I do like the Clover Amour because I prefer metal hooks, but again, the throat is a little too shallow so I have some trouble working stitches. I do like the feel of the handle. As for Prym, I love the shape of the hook head. Just pointy enough and the throat is deeper. I generally prefer more of an in-line shape, as I learned to crochet using Susan Bates hooks. The Prym head is like a combination of inline and tapered. I find that the Pryms slide pretty easily and don’t squeak if I’m using a natural fiber and I like the feel of the hook in my hand. My more than two cents worth!

  • @katydidiy

My top 3 hooks are clover amour, prym in the larger sizes and aluminum susan bates. The glide of clover amour is unparalleled. I got the prym larger sizes for super size granny squares - worked perfectly on multi-strand work and finally the Susan Bates, which was not discussed is the only one i use on Caron Simply soft to eliminate the tendancy to split.😮

I use Prym hooks. I love the aesthetic of it and it's light weight feel on hand, which is great cuz i like switching between pencil-hold and knife-hold. Only cons would be the long hook-shafts for smaller sizes as others in the comments mentioned. Other youtubers mentioned the drag and yarns being caught on shafts cuz their hook had a rough finish. But i have 2 whole sets of Prym Hooks, and all of mine are smooth and doesn't drag. (I do want to try the Clover Soft and Etimo for it's smaller sizes one day to compare).

‘Nails on a chalkboard’ - exactly. Wasted money on buying three Pryms recently. I can’t stand that squeak and it’s not smooth to use. I do really like the shape though so I’m really disappointed that it didn’t work. My clover amour is the smoothest to work with but as you kind of hint at, there’s nothing exciting about it. My husband is a wood turner so we’re experimenting putting a good hook in a wooden handle so I’m going to get him to do that with the clover

These are my all time favorite hooks. Idk what exactly it is, maybe it’s the handle shape being perfect for my hand, or how smooth the metal is, or both, the length of the shaft the shape of the tip…these hooks are amazing to me. 10/10, going right in the “I’m hooked” category for me. I have them in several sizes and if I need a size I don’t have I would rather go out and buy a new hook than use one of my others.
The only hooks that come second are Prym, which I love love love, and then somewhere between those bouncing around is the Clover Amour 7mm. It’s plastic, but it is the BEST plastic hook. I haven’t used any of their bigger plastic hooks but if the LnT hooks were not available, that would be my next choice most of the time.
    17:37
I will say about the Pryms though, I almost exclusively use them with Lily Sugar n Cream yarn. That combo is amazing. But they don’t work *as well* with other yarns I’ve noticed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I also have a Clover Soft Touch and I'm not a big fan of that one either. I think the actual hook head is too small for my liking.

I tried clover soft touch and returned it. The handle is too short and pushes into the back of my hand. I got a clover amour thinking people were hyping it too much but I’m in love. As for the Prym, I have one hook that I got to make a shawl with truboo because that yarn is so slippery and I needed the extra drag to help my tension. I haven’t used it for anything else since.

I'm all for corny puns in your ranking names!
As to the hooks you covered, Clover Soft Touch seems too short to be comfortable in my hand. I learned how to crochet with Susan Bates aluminum hooks; they're certainly inexpensive, although I would add 3rd-party cushion grips (like the ones for pencils) now. (I would recommend an inexpensive set of bamboo hooks for beginners nowadays, though.) I have a LOT of Furls Streamlines, both in wood and resin, and mostly like them. I don't own any Furls Odyssey hooks, but do have one Furls Candy Shop (from before the Streamlines were introduced). I LOVE Clover Amours, and own all of their sizes (except for their steel hooks). It's something which is a better value if you can get a good coupon for it (such as a "40% off 1 regular-priced item" coupon from Joann or Michaels). I own a set of light-up crochet hooks (interchangeable tips + 1 handle, in a zippered case, but don't use it that often; a good neck light usually works better for me. I do own a couple different kinds of ergonomic aluminum hooks; my favorite such set is Athena's Elements, which I bought one Prime Day from Amazon. I treated myself to a set of Laurel Hill wooden hooks for Christmas one year, and love them -- very smooth-finished and comfortable to hold. As I mentioned earlier, though, an inexpensive (but 4-star rated or better on Amazon) set of bamboo hooks is what I'd recommend for beginner crocheters, as well as for travel by crocheters of any level (no hassles from metal detectors/airport security, and at the price, you won't be heartbroken if you lose it).

    • @TheChroniclesOfYarnia
      @TheChroniclesOfYarnia 11 місяців тому +2

@@PunkHime89 the Etimo is slightly stockier and about 3-4 mm shorter the soft grip is not soft and more of a dense rubber. The hook itself (although beautiful) is not the quality I expected. The hook tip where the beak of the hook meets the stem (lol I’m calling it a stem 🤷🏼‍♀️) it is as if it was bent and then finished in the deep red tone because it’s under the beak itself shorting the grip of the hook considerably. And it is consistent throughout the set. I REALLY wish I could show you pictures so you can see the shotty craftsmanship . I don’t understand why they are so expensive or popular. Although I must confess they are beautiful, they are not the quality hooks they are advertised in my own opinion. I hope this helped you to decide. But please don’t take my word perhaps buy a single hook, I wish I had done that.

@@TheChroniclesOfYarnia if it’s shorter than clover soft touch, I’ll take your word for it. Maybe I’ll try one hook like you said just to get it out of my system. Thank you!

They often get overlooked for the fancier hooks, but hey, they do the job decently well for what they are. I rarely use anything but furls since I made the plunge and bought them in wood, resin, and metal, though.

I got them in the pack on sale as my 2nd hooks to try ever and I didn't like them at all but I'm pretty sure it's because of my pencil grip and them being more for knife grips. I probably would also not like the Furls hooks either for the same reason

I first got my Crochet Lite from HL. I LOVED THEM so much! The light is awesome and helps you with dark yarns. I doubled down and bought an interchangeable lighted set from Amazon..which are made out of resin and the handle has 2 settings. I really love them, but when I bought a Furls Resin Streamline? Yeah, the lighted set is packed away. I am a Susan Bates girl, I still have my original set, but I can’t use them anymore because they are too thin in my hand. Tulips are pretty and people love them, but they hold the same problem for me as the Clover knock offs: too small of a handle and just expensive for no darned reason in my book. I have 2 Yarnology hooks and they are the huge sizes and I only use them with certain blanket yarns, other than that they are okay. I don’t own Pryms, or Clover traditional hooks. And L&T is Michael’s attempt to get in on the hook game to compete with Susan Bates and Boye, so I wouldn’t touch them, but do recommend them for beginners. I now own a set of Clover Takumi Interchangeable Tunisian hooks and I love them for Tunisian.
