    Probably one of the nicest modern day liveries in my opinion!

    I like the sound of the VP-185 engines, their similar to the old and brilliant Valenta engine.

      You will be pleased to know that after a 10 year gap MAN have had to relent and re-commence production of the VP185 and have even now produce a common rail derivative to meet a anti MTU/caterpillar market.

      the Valenta and VP-185 were both made by Paxman

    Any train that produces clag I call clagmasters, and even though they are'nt valenta anymore, they still have big clag abilities!

    Why do they have to start these things up inside? Surely they could tow it outside (with a Class 08 shunter).
    There must still be a lot of surplus WW2 gas masks left in Britain.

    • @james123212
      @james123212 7 років тому

      the only thing a WW2 gas mask would do is give you asbestosis from the asbestos used in the filter anyway the sheds have extraction systems.

    • @lukedavies472
      @lukedavies472 7 років тому

      The white smoke is just water in the exhaust system hardly any harm breathing it in and the gas masks used in our country were Asbesdos ridden anyway so no way of winning I guess

      CreRay probably a combination of the two water vapour will play some part on it

      Unburnt fuel from direct unit injected fuel. I'm afraid most of the deposits are a result of no pre heat being available, unlike land based gen-sets. Result is waste fuel in the combustion space and exhaust on start up.

    Do they still run these? Same engine since the 70s?

    • @Jeagles
      @Jeagles 4 роки тому

      Paul Stevens VP185s are just about holding on, not the same engine since the 70s though, they were put in in the late 90s I think

  • @blissy1

    That is ridiculous there is no way that engine is running efficiently that smoke is unburnt diesel, why did Paxman not fit glow plugs

    This video shows the age of the design; MTU infinitely superior in this respect.

    • @AllianceB95
      @AllianceB95 6 років тому +1

      I do wonder.... Will the MTU be able to outlast the Valenta engine? Afterall the Valenta engines had to endure loads of thrashing and being pushed to the limit all the time...

    • @Danse_Macabre_125
      @Danse_Macabre_125 Рік тому

      @AllianceB95 Assuming ScotRail runs them to 2030, that'd be 26 years since the first MTUs were fitted I think; first MTUs were fitted in '04 to max 29 year old powercars then.
      Probably could, although they'd end up outlasting the HSTs themselves

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna Рік тому +1

      @@AllianceB95 The re-engineering of the Class 43 I believe included a `soft start' control system so they never leave a station like a scalded cat like the Valenta did, I may be wrong but I was told that by someone iirc. Sorry for the late reply but i wasn't advised of your response.

    • @AllianceB95
      @AllianceB95 Рік тому

      @@Martindyna Excellent soo in theory they are kept at a certain temperature. Just like in the DB 218s you can start them without pre-heating the coolant/oil buuut it's gonna get rough... They dont advice the 'coldstart' Cheers for the response, and im glad im not the only one who dont get adviced of a response. It happened multiple times already this year inspite little new footage :P
