Well, the mainstream opinion against the diesel is the "clatter" sound. Sure, the gasoline engine seem to be more sophisticated and quiet. However, gasoline engines are less energy efficient than diesel engine. For instance, a standard model Bugatti Veyron engine produces 3000 hp, but 2/3rd of it goes out in wasted unused heat, and "only" 1000hp goes to pavement. Sure, 1000hp is well enough, but think of the energy that is being wasted. You could probably heat several family homes for one quick stint in a Veyron. That's why in marine engines, locomotives, big trucks diesel is used, because I think it has about 60% efficiency. For comparison, steam engine would be around 10% efficiency, gasoline engine is about 30%, then you have the diesel, then I believe you have the electric engines. What I would actually like to see is to have a diesel electric car. Diesel electric locomotives have been around since late '30s in U.K. They got the concept right to this day. I believe, before going fully electric with cars, a diesel-electric should be a natural progression. You'd have efficiency, range, and would not depend on connecting wires to your car. Also, if there were diesel-electric-battery hybrid, you could use dynamic breaking to use your wheels as energy generators to feed the resistors to make the electric motors slow down your car, or feed the energy to charge the battery. Sure, all these hybrid technologies sound expensive and complex to implement. But when done in big numbers, it could be well feasible. For fun though, give me a gasoline powered Honda S660, with rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, 6-speed manual stick shift transmission, and no annoying touchscreens in the center of the dash. What a wonderful car. Japanese don't export the Kei cars though, which is sad, because we end up with a total embarrassment: the Smart.

That was the whole point of New Top Gear. Old Top Gear was effectively an information show about buying or selling cars, and would just do reviews and points of interest like this video. New Top Gear was entertainment.
Va Sr The new format was launched in October 2002. They also tried to maintain some relativity to normal cars initially, presenting market trends, testing affordable new models etc, but this only lasted for a few seasons before dropping even the last bit of car journalism.
so why is the new 'style' called top gear? It is a completely different program aimed (presumably) at a completely different audience. Its informational content is zero.
@@carldudley3262 Basically Old Top Gear died a few years before New Top Gear was released. This break between them allowed Top Gear to move away from the hard car journalism of the old format and reinvent itself with the more stunt and showpiece heavy format we are familiar with today. However, as stated above the initial content of New Top Gear still had a decent bit of car journalism and it was only later that they completely abandoned those segments. Also, keeping the name allowed the BBC to take advantage of the existing audience from old Top Gear; meaning they wouldn't need to work as hard to get an entirely new car program off the ground.
Who cares if they cheated! Governments cheat and steal everyday and they don't like competition. But would rather still have diesel engine over gas any day.
@@ndg9367 I agree. Not than I am a fan of VW cars at all. In my experience the reliability is questionable. Outside of warranty they're very expensive to put right. The authorities set down the very very precise way it must be driven to meet the requirements of the test. So VW designed the cars to do this. What a strange takeaway. First of all, this isn't just "some expert", it's Jeremy Clarkson. And diesel was popular for a very short window in the 2000s and only thanks to subsidies and only in Europe. There's really no reason to buy a diesel nowadays.

Sensible thoughts , stupid thoughts : each is the parent of the NEXT thought ; we choose which we encourage. Juvenile behaviour in a mature man is as visibly aging to the male as ( on wet days , too , mostly ) , shorts are on a man : the only difference between their wearers and their five year-old sons shouldn't be just the length of the shorts.
Clarkson punched out one of the people responsible for ensuring Top Gear made it to the telly each week. This tends to throw a terminal spanner in the works of a TV show.
This has nothing to do with the CCP as it was actually the US that raised the issue. It makes you realise that Clarkson is a canny journalist playing to a market. He's not the idiot he often appears to be, he's just good at playing one. Diesels have become popular partly because they've improved and partly because fuel costs have gone up so much in nearly quarter of a century. He got wrong thing slightly wrong - It isn't actually necessary for diesel fuel to be cheaper to buy than petrol - it just requires that diesels do more to the gallon and - provided you do the extra miles to exceed the purchase price of the car - the diesel will work out cheaper. Diesels are now pretty much mandatory for company cars for this reason. Interestingly enough, though, a lot of Taxis are now the (Petrol) Prius Hybrid.
+Rapscallion2009 there are areas in the city where you can only go with hybrid/lpg/electric cars. that's why. also for a cab driver who needs space a bottle of gas in the trunk will not only use up space but also scare customers who are afraid of gas blowing up.
The only reason a cab company or any company buys a Prius is because they buy them in bulk, and they get a hefty tax kickback on the purchase for "being green".
Yes because 4 litres of diesel are more expensive than 4 litres of petrol...also the Prius Hybrid requires practically no maintenance, the brakes don't wear out as fast etc...
Rapscallion2009 Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) has allegedly a IQ of 170, makes sense because not many people could become as successful as him playing dumb unless they had the brains to do it properly
@Povilas Kuznecovas In the UK, when fuel was in gallons, the Budget typically put 2p extra tax on a gallon (a few grumbled). Then the price was set in litres and the Budget typically put 2p extra tax on a litre (a few grumbled). Hardly anyone noticed (a nearly 5x tax increase) and it stuck.
@Povilas Kuznecovas Tax is 58p/litre on both petrol and diesel (including biofuels), but then 20% Value Added Tax (VAT) is added onto the price of a litre, including the fuel tax previously added. Something like 2/3 of the pump price is probably tax.
Because he is, Clarkson created the Chatacter Clarkson, racing around the planet cracking jokes and sticking 2 fingers up to the establishment, because that's what the goons like. In private he's known to complain about Teenagers speeding through the town where he lives and illegal parking, calling out for higher parking charges to keep the riff raff away from the area he lives. But why not, his opinions on the tv are purely what's been decided the audience wants to hear, his private life is almost the opposite. Posh restaurants, first class flying etc
Many arguments for and against the diesel from 1991 sound the same we now have for the electric car. 1. Better for environment 2. cheaper fuel 3. more reliable 4. too expensive 5. needs lower tax to leave nice market.
Arguing about diesel and petrol is like arguing about tea and coffee. While tea is made from leaves, coffee is made from beans. And tea is an infusion. Coffee is of course the diesel of hot beverages, in the same way that petrol is the tea of fuels. You can't run a car on either tea or coffee, and drinking petrol or diesel would make you very poorly indeed. It is also interesting that there was a car called a bean at the turn of the 20th century, and of course we must not forget the Ford model T. It is also significant that you hardly ever see a diesel motorbike, and most bikers favour tea over coffee. Except Lambretta owners.
...because diesels typically need bigger displacements and forced induction in order to maximize their efficiency..? Motorcycle engines are usually below 1000cc, two stroke and two to four cylinders. I got your analogy from the start until you went off on a wild tangent in the middle, not sure what you were trying to say there...

I didnt notice that Diesel engines are more reliable then petrol on the contrary , all my friends that run Diesel and there is a lot of them , have constant problems , i run Petrol and i never had a car brake on me only regular maintenance , short of one thing with Citroen 1.8 Petrol engine that had some Gears brake , but it was a quick fix
Plus a diesel will go to the moon & back 3 times before being clapped out. Given an empty road a diesel will happily cruise at the same speed without variation. So you coul trundle up the N6 without shifting the throttle
The EU can say at most that taxes for one thing should be lower than for another. How this is done is up to each country. To tell the truth, most will just increase tax on what should be more expensive than lower tax on what should not.

@@mantasookinavicius5154 People say electric cars are clean but they forget the batteries need charging, meaning even more fuel is being pumped through the power stations.
@@PF-gi9vv In addition there simply isn't enough lithium produced for EVs to become widespread and replace petrol/diesel cars. Hydrogen cars look promising but the technology isn't quite there yet. Right now the best solution seems to be to invest more in public transport and discourage people from driving but I doubt the government would ever do that because it would mean a radical reshaping of the way our society works.
The diesel pollution thing is merely a collaborative effort to extract money from car drivers. Twenty years ago diesel cars were not terribly pleasant to drive. Today's models are sensational. The problem governments have is that they go quite a long way on a gallon fuel. The NOx issue isn't so much to do with fuel type. It's more to do with how it is ignited and how it is burnt. NOx comes from nitrogen and oxygen in the air which combine to form oxides of nitrogen when air is heated. The presence of combustible material merely supplies the required heat. Biodiesel and LPG are no better in this respect. The other thing that is constantly overlooked is that diesel engines produce virtually no carbon monoxide and virtually no unburned hyrdocarbons. Particulate matter is dealt with by way of a DPF (diesel particulate filter) system. NOx is dealt with by way of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust treatment systems. All modern diesels are fitted with three way closed loop catalytic converters. This is identical to modern petrol engines. In fact, the latest generation of direct injection (throttle-less) petrol engines throw out 8-10 times more particulate matter than a modern diesel engine and yet these petrol engines are not mandated to have a DPF system.
@captain pugwash I agree with most of your comments apart from 'Electric cars are fuelled with renewable energy' - they're not, they're fuelled from fossil fuel power stations
@captain pugwash Could you explain why fossil fuel cars are different from fossil fuelled power stations? I understand there will be an efficiency difference but the argument remains. Your car is not 'emissions free' - it's power comes from a battery that is charged by burning fossil fuels.

2022 and waiting for the future campaigns against battery electric vehicles. It will come. The poor environmental credentials of diesels were known for years, just as they are already for BEVs, yet they were encouraged and directly incentivized as a fix to a specific problem " greenhouse gasses". 3 things here have changed so much. Clarkson, Top Gear, and diesel engines.
True
What about the diesel powered Audi LeMans cars?

Back when they talked about cars that normal people can afford.
I want to know only about cars I cannot afford

43p per litre for diesel back then. Can we go back in time so I can fill my car up for £25??
Remember when people were up in arms all the time over "acid rain"? What a load of tripe that was.

Today I actually drove a PD110 for the first time and I was quite impressed, you might not like diesels, but they are just perfect for long cruises...
Edit: In my country 2/3 of used cars online are diesel
Jeremy predicted electrification, which killed the diesel
He was right though. They did cut the tax and there was a boom in diesel sales.
If they hadn't, it probably would have remained a niche market in the UK.
@@LomTong How much did they cut the tax?
Not trying to be a smart-ass here, just curious, im not from the UK
A Volkswagen as an example of a clean diesel car. "that one didn't age quite so well"
3:36 Holy crap! It’s an AA guy that’s actually getting PHYSICAL instead of just plugging into the OBD port 😱
I can't wait to call them out in my 98 diesel mercedes with no obd
Clarksons hair was almost the thing that raised my eyebrows the most in this video until I saw the fuel prices at 5:20 😭
They didn't mention that most diesels out last a petrol engine by about twice as long if not more..
Not nowadays...
I presume you mean twice the mileage or twice the age? It all depends how the car is looked after. Ive known a mk2 golf gti do over 300k on the original engine. It was used to commute from brum to newbury daily.
My Corrado vr6 just got dyno after service and was making 192bhp with 183k miles, it's always been looked after regular oil changes etc.
They also didn't mention that diesel engines cost more than double to service or repair
That is true but who owns a personal car for so long and drives it so much that their engine (even if petrol) actually dies because of the wear?
Ha has, Jezza's accent in these early days. 😂 So posh.
It'd be amazing to live with those prices today
5:22 - Wish we had those prices today
5:22 - 43p per litre of Diesel... The year I was born... I wish it was still priced this way and not £1 more expensive!
