- Chris Kelley walks you through changing the timing belts on your 749/999 engine. This can also be applied to the 998, 996R and S4R Testastretta engines. Go to ca-cycleworks.com/exactfit for more information about our ExactFit timing belts.
Great stuff! Recently bought my first Ducati and this has been a great help. I'll be installing a set of your belts (yes, yours- not the banditos) next week.
Appreciate you taking the time to do this series of videos!
Great video thanks. I was reading the 821 motor belt change procedure according to the Ducati w/shop manual and it says/shows to use a camshaft lock tool to hold the camshaft and crankshaft (with another locking tool) relationship in time. Then the camshaft sprockets should be loosened on the three sprocket holding screws, so that the sprocket can move on the slotted holes. Once this is all arranged then the belt tension is adjusted. This makes good sense, since all tension influence from the camshafts etc. is removed from the belt. After the tension is set then one tightens the camshaft bolts up, removes the tools and all is done. This also allows for the timing to be perfectly reset each time and is also the method used for timing VW TDI engines. I don't see anyone using these camshaft locking tools though. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks a lot for all the effort in making these videos
Yes, it is a great procedure to float the sprockets and set the tension that way. It is the best means for measuring tension with the least requirement for interpretation and thinking for the technician. The ways I present are what I do for my own self and a simpler alternative to the factory procedure.
Really helpful video. Very simple and uncomplicated. Great to see someone sitting on the ground doing this cos thats where most of us will have to do it!!!
i marked the tensioner and measure the cap between the marks, and when i tensioned it i measured a couple times and its working fine for me, i didnt make the valve adjustment i just did it like you with the hand and when it was in position it was fine
Is it the video or is the guitar tuner a bit easier to read because i saw 150 hz. nice videos though very informative. doesnt look a difficult job. Also are the cams threaded in the center because it looks like a cam tool could easily be made.
Thanks for the videos. Just watched again to refresh. Got my belts from you in the mail a couple days ago, and am going to put them on tomorrow. Found a free iPhone app Gates Carbon Drive I'm going to use for my Hz test. Thanks again.
Or use "nTrack Tuner"
@John Brooker that is normal. In our experience the OEM belts stretch a lot more than our ExactFit brand.
@mznyc1 yes a bit. On the desmoquattros, I observed that the timing belt tension could be set by pushing up and down on the short span between cam sprockets seeking a total travel of 5mm or 0.200". Also, the Testa engines belts are wider.
How about a video on the multistrada 1200? The rear sub frame in the way and it's impossible even to remove the vertical timing cover. Can you please show how deal with it?
Ah man, I'm so sorry. We don't service bikes, so all the videos were on bikes in our family. I don't know anything with a MTS1200.
question: when you checked the frequency on the timing belt, you noted that you saw 112 or so. In the video, the numbers were moving so fast that I couldnt read that. I suppose it is easier to read in person, and that probably just doesnt come through in the video, is that correct?
excellent...i am thinking about buying a 999 !
are your valve adjusting videos applicable for the 999 aswell ?
is it possible that Hz are diferent when is diferent position of engine? for example I set in right position on horizontal 110 Hz cca and on vertical too, but when i move with engine on horizontal is 145Hz and on vert. is 125Hz for example.. Its logical but, on horiz. are diferences bigger. Is it normal and ok? Is it safety? Thanks for advice
I have no idea what you're talking about. You set horizontal tension with the marks lines up. Then turn engine to get vertical cylinder at TDC (fire) and set its tension. Our belt manufacturer says "the tighter the better". If you somehow initially set the belts' tension correctly and then later, it is a higher number, that isn't something I personally would think a problem as long as the bike ran fine.
Chris is there any difference in this operation between these Testastretta 4v's and the early 996 4v's? Thanks,Michael
Just completed a belt change for the first time on my 749. I made sure that the belts were tensioned to 110Hz on both cylinders, checked them several times after I had finally tightened the fuji nuts, I then revolved the engine several times and just for my own interest i rechecked the tension and found that both belts tension had reduced to about 95Hz. Is this to be expected as the new belts settle in?
The belts for my 2004 999 came in the other day and say tune to 99, safe to 110. Is 110 no longer the recommended as is in the video?
Thanks.
The belts we manufacture apply the same force against the cams at 99 Hz as the factory belts do at 110 Hz. Ours can be run at 99 or 110 and it is safe.
Hey Chris. We were just talking and At&t must have dropped my call.
Great video's by the way. I am going to attempt to change belts on my 999. Do you have a software for Mac that I can use? Or I could just set the distance at 5mm.
Thanks. Mike
Hi Mike, we don't know of any software for the mac, but any guitar tuner should work. Check the forums for what others with macs are doing.

Ok thanks. Will search and let you know.
Thanks for the video guys!
How applicable/similar is this for the 2013 Testastretta 821 in the Hyper SP?
We're told close enough that it's worth watching. Though I can't stand hearing myself... - Chris
is this what i need to do for an 07 1098 and can i have the link to your tuner? thanks
How about a video on the 1199
No one gave us a Panigale yet. :D -Chris
@@CaCycleworks hey, we can use my bike, my garage, and also we can knock out that 15,000 valve adjusted due soon.😁
I accident mess up the marking on the vertical cylinder. Is there a another possible way to install new belt without reusing old mark?
If you see the "T" patterns in the cams, you notice they are oriented at right angles. You should be ok to mimic what is on our video when your center pulley is lined up to the notch on the case.
be very carefull, justo one tooth missed on the belt can really mess your timing, and if a valve hit's the piston you could blow off your engine, your should use a engine turn tool with a graduated disk (ducati part number 88713.0123 ) the TDC toll (ducati 88765.1188 ) and the timing check gauges tool (ducati part number 88765.1518 ). This is the best and precise way to timing your engine, again please consider if a valve touches the piston and bends you are looking into a apeshit cost for repair of bent valves and possible valve guides on the heads. If you don't own these tools or similar, or this procedure is strange for you, just hand the bike over a experienced mechanic.
Thank you for the video! What is the name of the Guitar Tool? Where can i get it ?
There are so many out there. The one I used was free and part of Ubuntu's free software repository.
If you're like me and live in an Apple world, there is an iOS app called Gates Carbon Drive that will work. (search Apple store from an iPhone or iPad to find it.)
Jake, please contact us through our shop website and we can send you the link. UA-cam doesn't allow us to send links here.
