Watching this video beings back memories of when I built my pole barn back in 1994. It's 24'x40' with 10' sides, a 7'x16' over head door, a man door and a 8'x10' slider. I did about 90% of the build myself, I did have help with the trusses and the roof, all steal roof and sides. Back in 07 I built a 16'x24' addition on for hay storage.

I would have notched the posts out for the headers instead of just nailing them to the posts. It would give structural integrity to the roof.

Great instructional video for myself since I have no carpentry experience whatsoever. I’m thinking about building either a pole barn or metal building to keep my Kubota BX23S and “man tools/equipment”. By the time you finish and I learn more, I may make my mind up. Keep up the good work!

Glad to see them using Post Protectors, seen so many building with rotted post because they didnt use these
Post protectors are not installed properly for uplift. They require 4 lag bolts for uplift to be effective.

Great video / build in every dimension. I’ve been a residential carpenter for 25 - 30 years. My work has evolved over the years but seeing this took me back to about 20 years . We spent the summer in upstate NY and build a real nice home for my boss at the time. There were 3 of us. Looking back it was very physical / hard work but at the time it was just another day. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I don’t think I’d trade those times for something else. I learned a ton and always got a lot of satisfaction looking back at we accomplished that day. If I may ask, roughly how many days did this project take to frame and get water tight? I’m also curious of what something like this would cost if that’s not to much to ask. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos and seeing it come together. I hope the building is treating you well

Looks great. Some people recommend lag screws near the bottom of the plastic sleeve or even drainage holes at the bottom. I don't understand - as long as the poles are inside a weatherized building like yours, they don't risk accumulating water through the top of the sleeve. Also I think it's important that the sleeve has no perforations so that there can be no contact between the concrete and the treatment in the lumber. I am guessing drilling holes at the bottom is more for posts that will remain exposed?

FYI they make composite cookies that meet the same code requirements as concrete ones at only a fraction of the weight. Carrying a cookie is very heavy and the amount needed for a building can add hundreds of pounds to a trailer load. The composite ones weigh only 2- pounds compared to 60-80 pounds for concrete. They are caller "footing Pads" and can be bought from Mid West Perma Columns. Very reasonable in cost, cheap to ship and don't crack! I love them and use them everyday installing Pole Barns.
Can't use those here where I'm at. Inspectors won't pass them to use. Have to be at least 2500PSI concrete footers here.

Don't forget to close the window and lock the door each night now that you have them installed. Need to keep the lookie-lo's out at night!
Just a tip from an old builder… I would invest in a proper level. 72” or 78” would be appropriate.
Nice barn! I was told to use screws for the wall girts but I see everyone using nails. Just wondering if it will hurt to use screws or just use nails.
Probably doesn't matter as long as they stay flush. I think they using nails is just quicker.
Looks great. So, they poured 80 lbs of concrete into the hole and dirt.... they didn't use water to harden it? I assume it will just harden over time as moisture gets there? Please explain. Otherwise, pretty friggin awesome!! You must be thrilled. ;)
Most of the holes had water standing in them, but yes they usually don't use any water.
It's an installers way of cheating so they can save time. A well built one will have the post set with fully mixed concrete and be allowed to dry before adding trusses. Many installers put the dry in place and say overtime moisture will harden the concrete, however depending on each jobsite it can take from weeks to years to fully get wet and set this way. Until the concrete gets completely wet and set your building will not be as strong as it is supposed to be,. For example a week after the building is up with dry concrete it WILL NOT meet the uplift specifications. Take your time and require your installer to fully mix and wet set your concrete. And two bags in a hole this size is a waste of time. Fill that hole up. It's the foundation of the whole building, why skimp when you went the extra step and cost to use the plastic protecting sleeves on the posts I would fire them! Ask your inspector to come watch that part of the install and see what he says.
@William DeBow he did say and we did see the holes where full of water when they dropped the concrete in.
How exciting it must be for you to share this video with friends and family and, of course, the youtubey watchers. Are you accumulating full SD cards or do you erase and re-record on them?
I move everything to SSD drives ( works faster for editing). When those start getting full I periodically move every thing to large capacity external drives and make a duplicate. Once footage on my sd cards are backed up, I delete the card and occasionally reformat it.
what type of nails are you using (in the nail gun)
This may have been answered already… I noticed when they were setting the headers they were resting them on something that lined them up. Were they just pre-measuring and driving nails to rest them on or what? Thanks!
They didn't put the lag bolts in the Post Protectors to attach them? I thought that was required for uplift protection.

When I first priced Material last year they were around $12,000. Today they are about $14,000. Total cost for the structure, no concrete around $17,000. I'm still going to add gutters, drains, and finished concrete floor. Those prices I'm still getting bids on.
How are they attaching bracing boards to the steel pins??
Steel pins have multiple holes for nails.
What was the cost including delivery.
Materials $13,000, labor $4,000, concrete $5,000.

Yes, most were raised in Amish Country. Not sure if it's German or Dutch, but they bounce back and forth between that an English.
Where did you get the plastic covers for the posts, what are they called, who's the manufacturer, and how expensive are they?

I hate to tell you, but those clowns installed those post savers all wrong. They are supposed to be lagged to the pole for proper uplift protection according to Postsaver instructions. They used a few staples and that post will will rip right up through those sleeves held in concrete given a strong enough wind. hopefully thats not going to be a problem for you.
It wasn’t shown, but screws with washer were added on all sides of each post.
Are those 4x4 posts? Also how deep are the holes? Looking to build a post frame building soon. Thanks! Fellow 1025 owner here. Love the tractor!
The corners are 6x6 and 4x6 in between. Our code was for 48" deep to grade. So we will be raising the grade with 3 inches of stone and 4 inches of concrete (7" total) so the holes had to be at least 41" deep.
where did you get the sleeves for the bottom of the posts? Is it part of the kit?
It came from the builder supply yard, but they are sold at several lumber stores. Usually called post protectors.

Hey Eric, I looked into the DIY aspect as well as just hiring someone. Fall of 2020 prices for just the materials of a 24X32 structure was approx $12,500. Do to timing issues and delays with zoning, I had a builder do it (he ordered materials) for Just under $17,000. The concrete pad was $4,700. They did much, much quicker and I think I'd still be scratching my head on the fine trim work.

Why would you not use Stone to fill the Hole. The dirt will turn to mud.
In my area the 2 preferred methods was what I did or pouring concrete in the holes and creating piers and the post sits on top. The latter is more expensive. It was explained to me the the dirt once settled has a greater holding power in extreme wind, compare to gravel which would stay loose.

You have the plastic boots on the poles with nothing holding them fast except for a couple of tacks on one side at the top! What is going to keep an uplift wind from just slipping the poles out of the plastic that is in poorly formed Sakcrete? It is well know that just pouring sakcrete in the hole without mixing makes an incredibly fragile concrete. A little racking of the structure and up she comes in a good blow. Really poor construction my friend. I am not being critical. But I am critiquing.
It’s not in the video, cause it was done without cameras rolling, but large screws were installed on all sides of the sleeves.
