My mother made these for my sister and I when we were children. And I’ve never heard anyone else, besides us, call them chewies, so I was so excited to find this.
She put chocolate chips in hers.

My grandmother in Texas use to make a variation of these called Yum-Yums. They called for chopped pecans and were frosted with powdered sugar frosting and then sprinkled with shredded coconut.

I've been making these since I was four (58 years Lol) Our family calls them Congo Bars. When I worked in the bakery while attending BYU I saw Congo Bars on the worksheet. I'd never known anyone outside of our family to make these. Slight differences is ours calls for 2/3 c butter, 2 2/3 c flour, 2 1/2 t baking powder, and 1/2 t salt. Ours doesn't call for vanilla, but I'm going to give it a try. Congo Bars also calls for nuts and chocolate chips. I like sharing recipes and I made your Hamburger Casserole for the Missionaries this week. I like to add recipes to my repertoire so I'm not serving the same thing over and over again. I made the steak and gravy a couple of weeks ago. Thank you so much for sharing.

Ooohh I am definitely going to be making these this week for my grandsons. I will probably add pecans to them. These sound similar to some butterscotch bars I make. When you start a recipe with butter and brown sugar, you know you are in for a treat. Thanks for sharing!!

These are a must-have dessert. Similar to Charleston Chewies I make that use two sticks of butter and two eggs, and pecans, which are almost too rich but everyone loves them. I love your channel.

My grandmother used to make these when I was little. I loved these, they were a little thing I looked forward to when going to grandma's. She been gone for a few years now. I didn't want to harass her for alot of things before she passed, I didn't want to burden her, I wanted her to rest and enjoy all of the family and not me asking her about everything. I'm really glad that you posted this❤❤❤
Side note * I would sneak these from the cookie jar at night, she it was me. I believe that she would fix things like these because of this. She knew I loved them as much as I loved her

It took me a while to understand that an "eye" is what we call a "burner" in Ca. Probably why I burn a lot of things I cook! I learned something new. I'm going to make this. Looks delicious.

When I was a kid, this was a special treat for Christmas. Mom's recipe had pecans in it and they were called Golden Bars. Very yummy!!

Well after watching this recipe I made them. I followed the recipe exactly as described.
And I had ROCKS! Wasted all those precious ingredients because down the garbage they went. So disappointed.
