"Nothing about this feels intentional" is literally one of my absolute favourite part of playing games like Dwarf Fortress. A game can basically be a story generator, isn't that what RimWorld is? for as fervently as the progressives defend and promote the supremacy of highly abstract and frankly shit art in most other fields when it comes to game design they're more rigid and by the numbers than the strictest fine arts snob. It must be so easily understood that you could hand the controller to homo erectus and it could beat the game and so homogenous that your brain doesn't experience wonder or joy but rather melts into a monotonous compulsion to progress along arbitrary tracks and complete pointless missions to raise statistics without caring about any of it. They've made it so that game progression is now closer to being a corporate drone rather than an actual fun adventure. The more prevalent recurring formulaic missions the more this holds true to the point where all ubisoft games seem to be the same game but with a different skin.

@@sdfabctr I think a lot of this is because they're Film School idiots. I took a film critique class in college and it all makes sense: they're trying to apply film critique to videogames and freedom hurts that. See, one of the core things about film critique is that EVERYTHING on screen is intentional. Even mistakes as they got left in during editing. If it's on screen, it can be criticized and analyzed.
Well that doesn't work for videogames because the player is in control. They can find bugs and unintended actions and sometimes you need to give the player the freedom to do things you don't like. It breaks their entire means of analyzing things so there has been a massive push for more linear games with less freedom out of these sorts of folks because it makes the story's intent clear. What? GAMEPLAY?! Who cares about THAT!

I have a question for you Mr. Game Dev; when you're plying your trade, do you look to older titles for inspiration on how to solve problems? I mean in the sense that rather then trying to re-invent the wheel, you simply look at how previous titles tackled a problem and see if you could tweak that to suit your current project?

      Pretty bold statement to make.
While I like Elden Ring, and I mean really like it, it lacks the same level of consistency as something like Bloodborne or Sekiro. Once you hit the Altus Plateau the game's quality and execution begin to rapidly deteriorate. Areas become more sparse, hp pools balloon, and enemies are either recycled in an illogical manner (one of those erdtree spirits spawning in the middle of a street or Astel popping up again) or overused to the point of exhaustion.
Considering the game's scale and potential resource restrictions (it was made somewhere alongside Sekiro) the game is nothing short of impressive. However, I wouldn't call it Miyazaki's best work. It fits somewhere in the "working things out category", alongside DS3 and Demon Souls.

The real crime with western developers acting like Elden Ring's design philosophy is somehow alien and wrong... is that it demonstrates they've failed to learn basic development lessons that western games had already mastered.
Consider the minimalist HUD of the original Thief games. Consider the lack of handholding in the original Baldur's Gate games, or Planescape: Torment. Consider the masterful zero-tutorial intuitive design philosophies of the original Doom games. Consider the "Go anywhere, do anything, kill anyone, it's all on you" attitude of Morrowind. Hell, even look at the post-Doom shooters; look at Unreal and Half-Life, dumping your voiceless character in a sprawling world, where everything was taught environmentally.
But then of course, these games were the products of small teams that by modern standards would be considered "indie". Nothing good ever came of these teams expanding massively, and having their creative decisions interfered with by publishers.
And now, in true young-people fashion, a new generation of developers have come along who think they "know" how things "should be", because they finished their first year at university and read a book, and can quote some theorist. And when they see the older ways, the better ways, demonstrated and liked by the playerbase... they throw a tantrum and call the old ways "outdated" to hide the fact that they don't know how to recreate those better techniques, and don't want to admit their own ignorance and incompetence.
As for all the theorising about the left and right and its relationship with games... it's all a smokescreen. Game development is nowhere near as subjective or esoteric as people think; it's mechanical. It is engineering. It's not magic. It's art, but art in the true sense - of skill, not pretentious magic - art, not "Art".
Even this idea of "game feel" - there's already an actual term for that, if the pretentious theorists would bother to do some research outside their field. It's called proprioception - it is your body's awareness of its own position and movement in the world, and it is extended to anything you are holding or controlling. When you drive a car, when you ride a bike, when you wield a tool; your sense of proprioception extends to the thing you're controlling, in order for you to correctly interpret its movement, because it is tied to your movement. The thing is - it's literally just this. It doesn't make you magically empathize with the tool; it doesn't make you magically assume the moral and ethical values of the tool... it is literally just a mechanical process by which you map the physical boundaries and conditions of the tool to your own sense of personal space/movement awareness, because it is attached to you.
I digress, but this is what I hate the most about left-wing theorists; they think they're inventing things, when all they're doing is misinterpreting things that have already been studied, named and reasoned out.

It's like horror movies; don't show the monster. Or Lost, which once it actually started resolving its mysteries turned to dogshit (but also needed to cool it with trying to make constant bizarre mysteries seem critically important.) A player or watcher or reader's curiosity and imagination will tell a far more interesting story than you can 9/10 times in media like this. Don't jerk people around by making everything seem like something they NEED to solve, but don't spoon feed people answers to every question either. Sometimes, sure, give people a real answer so they can feel the satisfaction of solving a mystery. Sometimes though, a story you can tell in one paragraph or one sentence that would have no emotional impact whatsoever can seem deep and tragic and interesting when you only catch glimpses and never get the whole answer. "Maincharacterguy promised Zanzibart, his old commander, he'd die at home in his bed" is the blandest way of getting the emotions across possible and will completely fail at that goal. The MC saying "Zanzibart, forgive me" when he dies, and maybe finding "the grave of Zanzibart" or something and saying something like "Commander, you didn't fulfill your side of the bargain" doesn't actually explain directly what the fuck is happening but it HAS EMOTIONAL IMPACT. You can and should flesh it out much more than I just half-assedly did but it makes it feel like a world that people actually live in and that makes you much better able to immerse yourself. In real life people don't walk up to you and say "My parents didn't love me so much as the idea they had of me, and that's why I'm cruel to my friends, because that was the only way I could get their attention and I don't want my friends to get bored of me and leave me behind." The way these game designers design games they'd absolutely have someone you practically just met say that shit apropos of virtually nothing, and then a fucking giant arrow pops up pointing out the exact location of their parent's residence in Ohio where you, in a five minute chat, can convince them that they were wrong, they call their child, and years of emotional trauma are somehow magically resolved.

Essentially the long and short of this type of writing is that it gives enough of the core components of a story explicitly, without explaining it in great detail, such that your brain fills in the blanks intuitively and *the story becomes as good as your imagination is*
Which might explain why brainlets on twitter think it's bad

Every little cave full of weapon ugrades is drawn. The entrances to the Rivers, the Mage towers, the towns, the shaks, the horizontal tombstones to jump up or down cliffs. It's all drawn on there. And the locations of the maps themselves are visible through the fog once you step into a zone.

I think there's a simple factor here that's going unmentioned:
Since Elden Ring famously doesn't hold your hand, it invites investigation and discovery, and this invites discussion online, and this all has a snowballing effect which results in 12 million people playing and talking about the game. It's the same sort of phenomenon P.T. had, where practically no one will successfully complete the game in a vaccuum.

At least, early on; the soft cap on Vigor is around 40 from what I've been told so you should dump points into that to avoid getting one-shot AND THEN start putting points into your other stats.

5:23 To be fair: Phil did later clarify what he really meant when he said that, and there were Japanese developers that agreed with what he said at the time. Konami was transitioning from old classic game-producing Konami to crappy only-pachinko Konami. Squaresoft and Capcom barely did anything for a few years. Clover hadn't yet properly resurrected as Platinum. Taito and Hudson Soft and a lot of smaller classic developers had been eaten up and then forgotten. SNK hadn't revived yet, and almost didn't. Sega weren't in a complete slump, but they weren't doing great and Nintendo... was in the middle of the Wii U. The entire Japanese games market, *at the specific time* Phil said it sucked, as a whole absolutely did suck.
Phil has said some indefensible things, but this is actually the greatest insight he's ever said publicly. He said it in a really shitty way when he was put on the spot, but he wasn't wrong about at-the-time-recent Japanese games sucking. Just, in general, completely sucking. Because at that time he was 100% right. Compared to how things are now, it's hard to believe the Japanese game industry was ever that bad. But it was, and Phil just called it like it was. Now please, please stop making me defend the cowardly troll who hypocritically cancelled Fez 2 just because he couldn't handle being trolled himself.

That and it's he's become bitter due to his past experiences hence the reason why he engaged in a lot of shady shit seeing it was the only way to make a real profit and anything legit was impossible. A lot of mentally ill people with a lot irritability and are bitter tend to justify the bad actions and lash out at any criticism. I do pity him a lot.

Media in general allows us to explore certain concepts we might never have been able to on our own, and videogames are one of the most interactive forms of media we have right now; it's just that video games have this stigma surrounding them where people outright dismiss the idea that they can be as influential as movies or books.

These people have been hammered by corporate execs about "accessibility" and "broad market appeal" for so long that they genuinely believe a game can't be good if it doesn't smush your face into the quest objective or bash you over the head with "hidden" dungeons on a constant basis.
To them, if you can miss a piece of content, it's a design flaw and not a nifty little secret for dedicated or lucky players.
They're not of the generation that hid secrets on Tomb Raider maps people spent hours trying to find, they're of the generation of devs that think you should get a glowing zip line to the quest objective and an annoying fairy that yells at you if you turn in the wrong direction for more than 15 seconds because if the game doesn't have that, someone, somewhere, might be discouraged from giving them money.
They've been expertly trained to disdain making a modest game to please a niche audience immensely in favour of making a bland, Triple A (TM) experience that's inoffensive, mediocre and sure to not aggravate anyone, even if that means it's not getting anyone excited, either.
They hate Japanese games because a lot of them go in hard on a specific target demographic and implement or omit features based on what they think that target audience may like. They'd *like* the COD audience, but if they can only get them at the expense of the existing audience, they're good.

Chad faith build boi? Bring out that envoy pipe and ashes, you can literally blow a dragon to death. Dex cheeky snipers? Hey there is a pot cannon you can literally snipe through a valley. I-just-want-something-weird? Take the ring finger and show your enemy the power of flickering! There is no such thing as toy in Elden Ring, everything and anything can work if you try to dig into it. There´s another thing that people are missing with the hate on the Souls-genre.
FromSoft´s game design is the antithesis of everything those lefties stand for. These people despair at every challenge, they´re quite likely to be depressed and miserable. Now there comes a game that symbolizes their entire depressive life filled with challenges all the while they got no idea how to deal with them. These people NEED others to tell them where to go and what to do. Souls games don´t give them that.
Souls Games push a self-improvement design mechanic where you sometimes have to run into walls until they break. Self-improvement "don´t you dare go hollow", "git gud" or whatever you wanna call it triggers these living failures simply BECAUSE they´re already hollow. They have already given up irl and now they look at others succeeding and seeth. Be it in game with people stomping areas that are "too hard" for them or FromSoft that outsells them and their shitty games.
Now a service announcement for the others here: DON`T YOU DARE GO HOLLOW! Leave your sign in the world! Improve yourself and help others improve aswell.
Regardless if it´s to beat some Rot Hoe like Malenia or something challenging Irl. WE`RE ALL GONNA MAKE IT MOTHERFUCKERS

They take the playable characters of the previous game who you are naturally invested in since you spent dozens if not hundreds of hours playing as them and then they select one or two to be killed off by the villain as a cheap way to make you feel sad. The most effective of this was roland's death but even then it's kinda meh. Telling me you're the writer for borderlands is a bit like telling me you were the art director for tetris 99. The game was never about that so it was completely fine for it to be completely unremarkable which is exactly what it was.

I'm a socialist and a gamer who loves engaging in competitive activities. People should discover their strengths and engage in recreational activities that allow those strengths to flourish instead of demanding handicaps when they try to do something they aren't great at. I am a socialist because of the simple fact that letting markets run amok without restrictions has always led to the obliteration of the rights of working class people, the rapid pollution of the environment and the exploitation of third world communities and their resources. Of course everyone shouldn't receive the same paycheck and the government shouldn't wield absolute power, but the poor of the world (who will always be the majority) should have the tools and the means to stand up for themselves because markets are governed by algorithms and algorithms don't care about human suffering. I also think that it's important for us as a society to protect the rights of all people regardless of how they identify themselves, but that the modern left has a tendency to see discrimination where there often is none. This alienates decent, open-minded people from certain demographics who would otherwise be allies and perpetuates false narratives. The point is that games, social psychology and economic practices are very different things and should be held to different standards. "Socialism" is not a blanket term, nor is "woke," and nor is "gamer."

@@Richforce1 Bloodborne was my first From Soft game and to be honest, it (and Elden Ring) are the only ones that got me real hooked. Just like your friend, I really couldn't _get_ into Dark Souls games (even though I play the games with plenty of hours in). The world is too desolate and filled with dread from the start that everything you do felt pointless, I know what it's going for and that's the point but I don't vibe with it on a personal level.
Bloodborne of course can be just as dreadful, but that's not what a first time player would think going through the early parts. There was a glimmer of hope, and you the player is doing an active part on what is going on with the world, unlike the Souls series where everything that matters has already happened in the past and you're just going through the motion without knowing why you're doing it. Hunting beasts as a premise is just a lot more straightforward and understandable fundementally, players naturally intuit that killing beasts = no beast = make the world a better place.
Not to spoil too much, but the notion that I could hopefully help this girl find her mother with a big red brooch made going through this forsaken world a whole lot more motivating. Seeing and talking to people you help by sending them to Oedon Chapel feels pretty nice the first time around.
The beauty of Bloodborne is how it gives you more implicit and explicit purpose plus gradually upping the feeling of dread more gradually throughout the game rather than just dropping it on you straight from the beginning. You knew the situation was bad, but it's almost mystery novel-like in how it reveals how much you didn't know.

Bro, Japanese games just hit different. Can't really explain why in technical terms, but those games just have soul. You can feel that the developers cared about the game, the craft, the story and characters while playing. Pretty much the same thing as with like manga vs western comics. They just approach it as an art instead of a business. And you can see how that reflects on the games, like, every Souls game or every Yakuza game improves and the last, get just a little bit better. Meanwhile every new game in a western franchise just feels like it's getting worse on every level, except maybe graphics. There's countless examples of this, like look at that they did to Dragon Age, Mass Effect, AC, CoD, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Battlefield, and it goes on and on.
There's this weird puzzle game, Catherine i think it was called, where you basically just solve some cube puzzles and hang at a bar, it's the weirdest thing I've ever played, but the game just has so much fcking soul, I've never seen anything like it.

It's just like whenever people mock western comics and animation while praising Manga and Anime. They hate the fact that there's a popular competitor that's more or less untouchable that they can't influence with threats of cancelation and crybullying.
Outside of removing gender from the character creator (part of me assumes it was a localization thing), there's no pandering nonsense and the game is extremely fun and popular. It sometimes happens here too, whenever something is propped up against woke garbage. Like when lefties hated Ghost of Tsushima after everyone praised it and mocked Last of Us 2. It just doesn't have the same effect.
The closest they can ever get to influencing things is in cases of localization, where they'll rewrite games and anime to add in cringy pro-woke dialogue, but that's almost always met with controversy.
