Dev even mentioned this in the video, these people see that a game is trending on some social media and can’t stand to be outside of the memes or, well, the trending topic at hand. But because they’re usually just playing games because it’s something popular nowadays, they don’t really want to put the time in to actually master the game, they just want to be in with the trending topic, to be in with the memes and jokes. Hell even though some of them will make fun of people who take pride in gaming accomplishments, they’ll do the same usually tweeting about how they managed to beat some boss or something. I think that’s what bothers them the most, not being able to be say that they, for example, beat a Dark Souls game and so on.

Sure, but if I CHOOSE to lessen my experience by making it easier than why should there not be an option for it?
One of the best examples of a game like this is Pathologic (both 1 and 2) where the fact that it is brutally difficult and honestly just isn't _fun_ is integral to the narrative. On one hand, playing Pathologic on easy would be blasphemy. On the other hand, because it's so punishing I didn't even think of getting the game and just watched a playthrough.
You could very well argue that an easy mode setting (as long as it informs you in big bold letters that "this will lessen the experience!") would have generated more income for the developers (people like me might have bought it) at very little cost (literally as little as a few lines of code, depending on how it is implemented), and would have given more choice for the player.
And of course if we're worried about ruining the experience: if difficulty is part of the experience, watching a let's play already ruins it for the watcher, so why not skip the middle-man, and let us ruin it ourselves in game?

If its close to none them really no issue sticking in something easy to set up and would sell more units. If its the opposite then I would certainly be against it as games would lose their ability to present challenge and help people improve cognition and the reward of beating something with challenge.
I do think there is some demand for it or something like that given the rise of popularity of trainers. Though much of that could be explained as ways to get around badly designed games or games that add extra grind just to sell the solution.

Difficulty-gating is a storytelling tool that developers should never be forced to remove.
However, for those who can't pass muster for whatever reason, there is a "pseudo easy mode" option that is a bit more difficult for people to achieve these days but, you could always like, watch someone better than you play? I dont mean watching a lets play, since that ruins the interactivity. I mean literally sitting in the room with Onii-chan or whoever and talking to them.
I think it was NakeyJakey who had a really good video on the feeling of watching someone play that encapsulates it very well. Its different from the feeling of playing it yourself, but it still feels like you interacted with the game. You were still a part of the decision making. I consider it pseudo-easy mode, because your input is the easiest form: talking. But at the same time you can view someone else struggling at the parts that were meant to be hard, and the storytelling effects of difficulty-gating are still felt.

Like when people got the pitchforks when Markiplier dared to play Undertale his own way which caused him to not want to continue the series for a long time. They didn't just make fun of him, they were legitimately VILE. Otherwise easy mode will always be a topic of ridicule within masses of gamers and trying to police it is dumb as hell.

I think there's something onesidedly disingenuous about the "not all [insert commercial product here] is for all people" argument. Having a broad appeal can also be a good thing. I think it's possible to take broadness of appeal to an extreme that makes the product worse, and also possible to take specialization to an extreme and make the product worse.
I took high school back when Shakespeare was taught, and I remember being told that Shakespeare wrote for two different audiences simultaneously. He apparently wanted the crude and lusty to take one meaning from his work, and the highbrow to take another meaning. I think a good video game should do this, too, regarding player skill. Imagine, say, a Metroidvania game where your character needs to go from point A to point B. Should we be strictly linear? No, because we don't believe in a single best path, only in best paths for different players. Let's say there are two paths from A to B. One is shorter, has more optional power ups (particular aggressive ones), but is substantially more difficult; the other takes more time to clear, takes the player by some eye candy that fills in some of the lore of the setting, but is substantially easier, including more health increases than any good player would reasonably need. This difference is clearly communicated to the player, perhaps by putting a particularly threatening enemy at the beginning of the short path while cutting the player off from backtracking to force players who retreat to "retreat forward" a bit, until the aggressive enemy gives up pursuit. To, say, a speedrunner, the long easy path in the game wouldn't exist - they couldn't spare the time for the scenic route. For the games journalist, the difficult section, outside of its intimidating outer layer, wouldn't exist. I think that would be the best way to tackle difficulty from a game design perspective - not menu options, but in-game choices that don't break immersion.

I see a cupcake, baked and ordered by recipe and then I see mass produced amalgamation of artificial materials designed to be addictive despite it's unhealthy nature, The processes that brought a twinkee into being and production can be called art but the end result? Is driving a delivery truck art? Is taking a dump art? It can be with enough deliberate intention but there are cases where it isn't. Why are games considered "something for everyone"? This is the same as with any other artistic medium. I would argue that "Get good" can apply to any medium. For example, you can pick up a book that is hard to read. There may be words you don't know or ideas you will not be able to comprehend. You can grow by challenging this book. You can look up the meanings of certain words you don't understand and revisit some ideas that were hard to grasp at first. You will become a better, smarter reader if you grind that material. Of course there will be people who may be handicapped to read that book, some can be blind, some may be game journalists and not know how to read, but in the end of the day mostly everyone will be able to enjoy the content of the book. And if you can't experience that you can just watch a review on UA-cam.

Before I played Dark Souls, I played video games on easy mode by default. If Dark Souls had difficulty options, I would have played it on the easiest mode, and it would have just been another action RPG too me. If Dark Souls had an easy mode, I would have never fallen in love with the franchise or the genre. The claim “An extra difficulty option doesn’t effect you.” Is false. If Dark Souls had an easy mode, I would have never realized what kinds of games I actually like to play, and I would have missed out on some of my greatest gaming experiences. There are a lot of people who have had a similar experience.
Multiple difficult options would divide the community. If someone says, they soloed Darkeater Midir, everyone one else who’s soloed Midir knows what this means and feels solidarity with them. This solidarity wouldn’t exist with people who beat Midir on a lower difficulty setting. The experience would be fundamentally different and there would be a rift in the community.
If you are someone who likes to throw around the claim, “Video games are art,” you have to recognize that Dark Souls doesn’t exist for you to beat it or even enjoy it. Dark Souls exists to convey the artistic vision of Hidetaka Miyazaki. Any enjoyment you derive from playing Dark Souls is just incidental to your experience of Miyazaki’s vision, and Miyazaki shouldn’t have to compromise his artistic vision just to pander to people who would rather play an easier game.

For example Everytime i scroll 9 gag and some guy in games section makes a post "i beat dark souls" or something. There is like 30 comments saying "congrats". It's nowhere near that with other games.
and i was like you. If the game gave me an option to give up and change difficulty, then i would at the time and miss on my favorite gaming expirience in my life.

Because you defaulting to the easiest option available and "blaming" the availability of the easy option is exactly that. You can always _choose_ to challenge yourself if there are multiple options, and you not doing so is entirely on you.
The same experience bit is a valid point, although you could really just add an " _on easy_ " bit to the "I beat Dark Souls" line.
For example, I wouldn't say that the Darkest Dungeon community was greatly divided by the game having difficulty settings.
Although I do agree with the artistic vision bit. If the designer truly has a vision they want to stick to, then I always respect that. In every other perspective, however, more choice is always good.

@@someguycalledcerberus9805 Thanks for the critique. The first point may have gotten a bit muddled in the narrative, but it was less about choice and more about not knowing what you don't know. You seem to be someone with high openness to new experience, so I could see how always playing on the easiest option and not trying harder difficulties could seem ridiculous to you, but for someone like me (with low openness to new experiences), I saw no reason to play on harder difficulties, because I already enjoyed playing games on easy. Of course it was ultimately my choice, but the point is, it wasn't an informed choice, and I would have never found out how much more I enjoyed playing difficult games (or games on higher difficulties), unless something like Dark Souls pushed me out of my comfort zone.

@@wind_traveler Haha, no I am also the type who plays the game on easy all the time. Sorry, if I maybe sounded harsh, I wasn't trying to attack you. I am just pointing out that it isn't the easy option's fault if people take it. Your point is very valid, in that necessity can channel you to discover new things and move out of your comfort zone, but on balance I believe choice is always good.

What's funny is that soloing midir is technically easier if I recall, as he gets harder the more summons you have. Even then, doing it either way is still an achievement in it's own right.

That girl in the bow would have a point if she A) wasn't a streamer sharing her stream publicly and B) didn't end the point by calling people that gatekeep "boring" - what a weird non-defense. She wants to avoid being shamed for doing what she does, but she resorts to shaming in one of the weirdest ways possible a generally *valid* response to people getting in on your sphere of interest/entertainment? When gatekeeping isn't pure asshattery, it's usually good, if not at least valid.
Also, I don't see how playing on a harder difficulty - or at least playing on "Normal" precludes someone from exploring the lore, enjoying the story and watching the cutscenes... as though those things are mutually exclusive to playing on a harder difficulty? Cringy cope!

6:44 "I want a cool interactive story!" Then get a choose your own adventure book lady, or watch other people play the games. If it doesn't have an easy mode it isn't required. They need to learn to play...
I just couldn't get good enough to play ninja gaiden, so I didn't play it. I watched my little brother absolutely destroy in in the hardest difficulty, but in his memory I buckled down and got better at the game rather than get rid of his game. funny enough they talk about "easy mode won't affect your experience" or "it's just an option for others" ignoring what developers might want for their games, like Miyazaki saying difficulty was just a tool for the narrative
but if you argue games should have hard modes or stop removing options from the player, suddenly the developers are righteous and don't have to cather to your petty needs, "maybe play a different game" they will spout
just say you want it all for yourself already

I'm a cyclopes with tunnel vision. Figuring out ways to mitigate my disability or turn it to my benefit is part of what makes gaming fun. I'm also 100% reliant on others for transportation and live in the ass-end of nowhere so gaming is one of the best ways to keep my mind sharp. The people using disabilities as a cudgel would turn every game into an idle game if they could and that shit is legit terrifying.
