    Thank you, Dev, for the lovely video. I'm transgender (as you probably know) and I think the "trans women are women" statement is such a red herring. We're not women, but everyone knows that. You brought up that males suffering with gender dysphoria genuinely desire to be females, and that's 100% true. Transitioning to appear female is like a coping mechanism just to make existence bearable. None of us WANT to have to take hormones and get brutal surgeries to alleviate our dysphoria.
    When people say that gender dysphoria isn't a mental illness, it's actually insulting. They think i would go through all of this hardship for the fun of it? My lord, gender dysphoria is pure mental anguish and it sickens me that idealogues drool at the thought of using us as their puppets. I just want to be left alone, and I want leftists to stop lying to people. They're making conservatives dislike us more than these conservatives ever did before.

      I don't dislike you. I dislike teachers pushing it on children, I dislike it becoming a social - almost clique like - movement in teenagers, but I have no personal dislike for trans people in the slightest.
      It's not really trans people pushing this. It's progressive morons.

      I perscribe to the "female/male brain in a male/female body" for the reason. You can't help your brain is saying you're the opposite sex but you're not, at the end of the day, what's really at the end of the line of our sensory system? The brain of course, thus, we should identify people as what their brain says. As the brain makes up well who we are. This gets a bit close to the post modernist definition but instead of being destroying the definition of woman its going along the baser instinct of gender and what we intuitively feel it is for us.
      You just have to be careful because modern progs use gender more as a title than to denote sex/behaviours, and not subscribing to the idea of genders as titles is what gets the arguments started and it kinda sucks.

      The attempts at half-dodging acknowledging it as a mental illness and what that means for political reasons and (probably mainly) to soften the feeling of the topic in discussion distracts from trying to address it sincerely for what it is. It's sickening, though, to see people emulate politicians like it's acceptable behaviour or approach to thinking about topics; you aren't less of a person for being how you are, and there is always going to be people looking to use others in such situations for their own gain-- and nobody should be emulating this.
      Edit: I do think that there are similar people in your position that are giving in to their emotional insecurities or instability and others are playing into that as well; the weak want to disconnect form reality when it's rough to accept, and someone else telling them it's okay to do so leaves us with individuals with dysphoria trying to force others to be accepted as women, guided by those without interest in their well-being, because they can't accept what you said. They want existence to be more than bearable, they want the satisfaction of being called what they want to be even if they cannot be.
      I would imagine that you would want to be treated with the same respect as anyone else rather than pitied by people that couldn't possibly understand what you're going through.

    The problem with "trans women are women" is that it doesn't have a solid base to stand on. If your definition of the word "woman" is "someone who identifies as a woman", the word essentially becomes meaningless. It's like saying that a sailor is anyone who identifies as a sailor or that water is anything that looks like water. In other words, it's bullshit. Trans women are trans women, women are women, trans men are trans men, men are men. That's reality.

    • @Esper54
      @Esper54 11 місяців тому +8

      Yep we're trans women. Cis women are cis women. Linguistically we are under the umbrella of women. I don't define woman as someone who identifies as such. I think that is very roundabout. I also think that a woman being an adult human female. Is semantical and born out of a university too old for it's own good. I just define it as someone who's gender identity associates with the female sex. Basically if my brain expects me to have all the traits and the roles of the female sex. I'm a woman. And yes gender identity is biological. not social. But yeah take it from a trans woman's mouth. Not some random person who hasn't been through these systems.

      @@NoOne-uh9vu it is my understanding that people with ASS can experience they gender less profoundly than neurotypical people. That is to say that usually people are either men or women and they feel comfortable with that fact. people with an autistic experience can feel no real attachment to being a man or a woman. There's a strong correlation between autism and gender dysphoria too i've learning from a few psychologists. So strong that it is tested and looked upon as a possible dismissive reason when assessing gender dysphoria. there's however a strong comorbidity between the two which is remarked upon as being about half of all people with gender dysphoria also exhibiting some level of autism spectrum aspects. i myself am no different, being diagnosed with ADHD/ASS besides gender dysphoria. But i'm mostly reflecting on people with ASS without GD, whom can still have a rather blank experience of their gender (meaning their inner since of birth sex). It's important i feel not to 'trans' that experience and it should be talked more about instead as it could lead to unneeded surgeries and hormone use which can impact them negatively later on as you need to have dysphoria to be trans. (this same mistake is made these days by 'transing' body dysmorphic disorder)

    I never really care too much about the "trans women are women" thing. Instead I prefer taking a step further away, and asking who *_definitely, incontrovertibly are_* women: all those ladies who gave birth, for example. We know those are women. My mother was a woman, my mother's mother and my dad's mother, those certainly were women. Obviously, definitionally, they must have been, or else there's no way they would have been able to give birth. Then I ask the question: are trans women *the same thing* as those women? No, clearly not. At a very minimum, we have to be able to make the distinction between those we know are clearly XX-chromosomed women, and those who we call trans women. They are not the same exact category, obviously, and everybody freaking knows it, and we need to stop lying to ourselves and letting anyone around us pretend they're the same.
    If some biological male wants to be called a woman, I really don't care much, but I'm unwilling to give up the obvious fact that they are fundamentally distinct and truly quite different from those women who are _obviously, _*_necessarily_* women...
    and to anyone who would insist on lying about this and taking up such a ridiculous standpoint, that I'm not allowed to say this distinction is there, then you're an enemy of thought and reason in my mind; I simply want nothing to do with you, don't want to hear a damn thing from you.
    Anyway, the end conclusion, I think the most accurate description of trans women is this: trans women are men who think of themselves as women and would rather you think of them as women and treat them as such, too, "and that's ok". I would think we can all agree that corresponds to reality as accurately as any other description does.

    Two interesting thoughts:
    First, as you discussed the social role argument my mind immediately snapped back to good ol Bridget. This argument could *immediately explain* why feminine men and masculine women must be pressured to transition. After all if you could force all feminine people to be women and all masculine people to be men then wouldn't the social role argument be true?
    Second, it's really telling about the impossibility of the concept that the blarg on your desk has immediately failed to have no qualities other than being a blarg. It is, after all, on your desk. The real blarg would be something almost religious. It could never be proven or disproven, you'd just have to Believe in Blarg. Of course that's the heart of the matter, that for most progs "Trans women are women." is not an idea to which they seek a logical answer, but a profession of adherence to the faith. "*I* believe (i.e. have faith) that trans women are women! I am virtuous!"

      Now, the left went so far it’s doing a horseshoe, and is regressing back to “Only girls play with dolls.”

    A spider has 8 legs, by definition. That doesn't mean a spider that loses a leg stops being a spider, and that doesn't mean we have to change the definition because sometimes spiders lose a leg. That means it's an anomaly, exceptions exist for almost every rule, but we don't work out language around that, if we were always that pedantic, all the time, then nobody would even know what a spider is.

    I'll keep it simple. Biologically, no, of course not.
    Socially? Well if we insist that gender is entirely a social construct, then why are we pretending that transgenderism is how you are born? If gender is social, then nothing about gender would be biological or neurological. Since nothing about gender is biological or neurological, then it has nothing to do with 'gender dysphoria'. Nobody would be born transgender. It would entirely 100% be a result of social interactions and personal choices.
    If 'gender' is both biological and social, well, then what the heck does that even mean and why isn't gender just the social side of sex? If gender is the social side of sex (sex being empirically observable. You cannot be the opposite sex), then why do transgender people try to change their biology to 'fit' into their identified gender?
    Basically, transgenderism makes no sense. If gender isn't sex, then why is mutilating your sexual organs and pumping yourself full of sexual hormones the 'solution'? If gender IS sex, then yes sorry you can't be the opposite sex so therefore you can't be the opposite gender.

If you look, sound, and act like the women who have given birth or who bleed for one week out of four, you probably mean no harm and might be cool to go urinate decumbently next to my wife without saying a word, you also might look like a dude and sound like a dude and start throwing hands over my wife having the balls to say " you don't belong here." Hence saying "assigned X at birth" when it's actually "observed X at birth." Also why I imagine Vaush doesn't understand why circular definitions don't mean anything, because he doesn't understand the concept that language is meant to describe things instead of just being a game you can "win" by confusing people.

    This video is exhaustive, and it still feels like there are some important questions or aspects of this issue that I haven't really seen addressed yet. It's hard to know where to start with this. I am, by any useful definition of the word, a woman. I don't have to self-identify as a woman, except for when I'm filling out a form, because it's easy to tell with a simple look at me. I don't base my entire personality or identity on the fact that I am a woman, but it is admittedly a very meaningful part of who I am, which is why it feels so weird when it gets used as a political weapon. It's rather alarming that we're taking just one of the sexes or genders, whichever, and blur the lines of its meaning until it ceases to mean anything at all. I'm not something "formless and limitless" as described by these lunatics. If "woman" means everything and nothing simultaneously, what does "man" mean? If it's also something that's amorphous and ineffable, then what does it serve to ever differentiate between the two? It starts to sound like the debate is about which collection of sounds you prefer to be used to describe your sex or gender, but we know that's not right. We all intuitively know that people's experiences differ greatly based on which set of biological characteristics they're born with, or whether or not they experience gender dysphoria, otherwise this whole issue wouldn't exist. So it does very much seem to be heading in the direction of erasing gender or even sex altogether, but that also erases the leg the idea of transitioning is standing on. If there are no genders, why would you ever need to transition? Why would you feel the need to alter your body to match it? But wait, that's a moot point, because there _is_ no such thing as gender, as we've established! What is even going on?

Also, Women transitioning to Men are starting from a disadvantage and moving into "normal" male capabilities. So, in something like sports, it is actually more impressive to see a Trans-Man kick Cis Men's asses. The opposite is true with Male to Female transitions and we view this as unfair. Now, thinking the term birthing person is absurd qualifies you. We've regressed in this domain, mostly due to trans activist overreach. My house is decorated like your grandma's house, right down to the floral sofa. I need to keep myself well-groomed and looking nice or I'm unhappy, and I'm literally always thinking about something.
    When I was a kid I wanted to be a girl and when I grew up I had multiple identity crises over the stress of wishing I had been born female so that I wouldn't feel like shit for not liking masculine stuff and not thinking in masculine ways. Since then I've eliminated the stress that comes from society's disapproval of the mix of my sex/gender and my behavior by simply not giving a shit about what society thinks and knowing that I'm a genuinely good, loving person and that the people I need in my life will be able to recognize that. I may be a man, but I know that I don't have to act the way society says one should in my day and age, and that there's more alternatives than acting like a queen too. That's a blessing I really wish I could give to other people before they make irreversible decisions like puberty blockers or cutting off family and friends.
    You just need to accept yourself for who you are and sculpt your raw clay into something that *you* find beautiful, inside and out, not buy into snake oil treatments that just make you feel worse when the euphoria wears off or spiral into a political ideology to try to force society to accept you. Personally, when it comes to trans people, I'm willing to call them by the gender they prefer if:
    a) They've made SOME attempt at actually passing as the gender they claim to be (ie, no men with beards claiming to be women)
    b) They're not obnoxious about it
    Pretty simple, really. If you're a "trans-woman" and all you've done is slap some makeup on, have a very blatantly male voice, stubble/beard, chest hair sticking out of the top of your low-cut shirt, etc? Nah, you're just a cross-dresser at that point. Or if you get screechy and loud the moment someone "misgenders you", then you're just an activist who's looking to start a fight for attention.

      The primary problem with this test is that it makes treatment dependent on whether the person is either good at costuming - i.e., grooming, makeup, fashion, etc. - or has the money for costuming aides or medical transition. There are lots of cis women who look like men and sound like men. Some have no interest in making an effort to present femininely. Some are just bad at costuming. About 6-12% of cis women have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which allow them to grow beards too.

      In Sweden, trans people who have received the gender dysphoria diagnosis (after 4 years of examination), are eligible for HRT after having "lived as their gender" for 6 months, I believe. It is a requirement in order to receive treatment in the first place.
      Voice training is a life-long project, and finding a fashion that works for a male body frame is extremely difficult. There are wigs, but they are very expensive.
      Shaving every morning and night and learning the basics of makeup is a low requirement though, and I'm sure that the people in the makeup stores would be excited to teach.

      Going by this logic, we should allow 13 years olds puberty blockers so such occurrences don’t happen within trans women, right? Also, how do you define “obnoxious?” Is it them telling you what they want to be referred to as, or?

    Conversion therapy doesn't "make the brain more masculine," and that isn't the only approach or solution. I will never understand why "body acceptance therapy," where we simply teach people to accept themselves and their bodies, is not considered an option. Why is it that having a gender that doesn't conform to your sex so much worse than surgery that leaves people with shortened lifespans and infertility? I don't feel as though the therapy option has truly been explored because it's not as profitable as the surgical option.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler Рік тому +10

      The particular tragedy of it all is the fact that loads of teenagers go through a form of body dysmorphia during puberty. Of course it does; your body is changing for a roughly 12-year period beyond your control and your brain doesn't keep up. I for example was awkward around the word "beard" and "moustache" for that entire period.

  • @TheAurgelmir
    @TheAurgelmir Рік тому +18

    The issue is that the self-identification route doesn't hold water either, because there's a lot of "you might be trans" stuff going on. Call it grooming, call it propaganda, call it people just reading about it online: It still happens.
    I'm of the opinion that this question wouldn't and couldn't have even existed without the internet. Before the internet we accepted that some people had a psychological disorder in which they were "born in the wrong body," which went deeper than just identifying as the other gender. It was accepted, and people treated the people who had this condition as if they were the gender they believed they were. And I think that's the difference: One is a belief that you are a woman, the other is identifying with "the things that people consider to be a woman." I don't think those are the same.
    In either case, I don't think the identity view of gender would have gotten any traction without the internet, people simply wouldn't have been exposed to such extreme ideas. Tomboys and fembois would have grown up as normal, some would figure out they were gay, others just that they didn't like conforming, but they'd still identify with their sex.

    Did not “make up” definitions of male and female. The distinctions were there, we simply labeled them. That is just like no one is “assigned X at birth”. No one is assigned anything at birth, their sex is observed.
    You are falling into Derrida’s mistake (hell the entire Third Wave mistake) of ascribing reality through definition - linguistics as weapon - rather than a definition being used to describe observable reality.
    The existential, subjective experience of “woman“ is simply insufficient. It is nothing that we can agree upon with universality, there’s nothing that can be observed, and there’s nothing that has utility to anyone other than the self-referential, putative “woman“
    “Adult, human, female“ describes a material reality. And that reality is a woman.
