John Meadows is an American professional bodybuilder and entrepreneur with an intriguing story. While John now boasts a successful career as an IFBB Pro bodybuilder and fitness company owner, his journey towards the top was extremely difficult.
Growing up, John never met his father, and his mother died at an extremely young age. This meant John only had his grandmother to take care of him. When his grandmother tragically passed away in 1999, John was left alone without his family to support him.
As the years went by, John continued to face new adversities in his life. During his early days in bodybuilding, John suffered from a rare colon disease. After fighting the disease for several months, his colon burst - almost resulting in his death. Luckily, John was quickly rushed to an emergency room where his life was saved. After several months of recovery, John was finally back on his feet.
Coming back into bodybuilding, John used the very obstacles that almost cost him his life as ‘fuel’ to grow stronger. Ever since he recovered from the colon surgery, John has gone on to become a successful bodybuilder, entrepreneur, and inspiration for many people all over the world.

Hi John! Do you ever do face pulls at a horizontal angle, either standing or seated (like on the seated cable row)? I find these stimulate my rear delts more than when I do them from the low pulley position like you demonstrated here...especially with an external rotation.

Same here. By the time I learner about John and these amazing videos, he had already passed. But his legacy will live on forever. Out of the thousands of exercise/bodybuilding videos out there, these ones here on his channel seem to work best for me. Something about his approach and the way he explains things makes it so easy to understand and execute. They're direct, short and sweet. No fluff or filler. If he needs to explain, he'll reference his life long experience and decades of training with the best. Some guys are great bodybuilders, but not great teachers. Some are great teachers but not great bodybuilders. John was the rare few great bodybuilders and great teachers. Thank you to John's family for continuing to upload videos till this day. Sometimes it maybe same or similar to past videos, but hearing/seeing it again just might make it sink in this time.

      For real….
That part when John says, ‘as you fatigue you’ll use some traps…that’s ok’…..
That is why he is such a respected figure, person, human, and father.

Feel pretty dumb for not realising the difference before, but the feeling speaks for itself. Rear delt flies done correctly kick the shit out of your rear delts.

For someone who lifts at home with nothing but barbells and dumbbells, I think the Muscle Snatch is a fantastic rear delts exercise. It may not be as concentrated as the exercices shown in the video, but it sure helps with injury prevention. I have noticed that all old-time weightlifters had at least decent rear delts, and they were doing a lot of snatches, cleans and various high pulls.

    Hi John,
Thanks for providing such great insight beyond the exercises. Great to know the in and outs of being geared and natural. I have had a people ask questions about this for years. You'e one of the few pros. Who is not afraid to provide an open and ojective opinion.
I am a 61 year old personal trainer. I started lifting 43 years ago. Some things have changed and some things have not. What we all inherently knew about training back in the day has clearly been validated today with studies and science.
Keep it coming John, great work!

I do seated rear flies, thats how i have learned to connect with them the best. I do a short rom, the muscle is only about 3 or 4" long, and my focus has been on learning to isolate them and keep my traps and everything else out of the movement, to make my rear delt work better later. For me and maybe im wired odd, when my chest is on my lap, grip pronated, i have to focus on driving my elbows forward/ away from my body as the weight comes up, so i can feel my delts.

Agree 1000 % putting rear dlts first.
Also until I lowered the lbs and really concentrated on the feel of the rear delt they responded.
I'm sure ud agree the rear delt is a tiny muscle compared to front & side so therefore its seems u really need to feel it work to isolate it.
Going heavy I can guarantee their not working that rear delt but everything else around it.
    Great video as always John

The funny thing is everything I've ever learned about bodybuilding I learned from the real bodybuilders not from gurus. When I had a shoulder pain it's because I forgot to work my rear delts. The a way I corrected it was the exercises you just showing in the video. So this exercises is your bread-and-butter to bring up your rear delts you absolutely right Your channel is very useful and educational keep up the good work.

My favorite is a seated cable row to the high chest. I use a bar that I can get my elbows far back and squeeze my upper back. It's a very similar motion to 5:04.

I, like many, have watched videos from folks who gave it a go, yet never connected. John, in my own opinion, has by far the most relevant criteria for health care of the body. Yes, he shows the many avenues to body building, yet he also gives us a look at what he feels will give us a better feel for how each individual may adapt to keeping ourselves in a healthier form. RIP John.

My current favorite is a cable cross for rear delts because everyone’s always on the pec deck and the lower chest cable fly is always open. I definitely want to add that upright row version of a face pull

A seated cable row (with a wide-grip bar) looks very similar to the second exercise. It definitely gives me a burn that I don't get from doing just the fly (although I had great results from just the fly) I will definitely give these variations a try.

I actually learned a hell of a lot from Mr. Meadows, especially when it comes to rear delt workouts. The Pec Deck Reverse Fly is now a staple of my shoulder workouts and I've seen great results. If it weren't for John, I never would have known about it. Thank you my friend and as always, may you rest in eternal peace. You helped a lot of people.

Those first two are what I have been using for about 6 months. I use a bench to stabilize my body for the rear delt flyes by placing the bench a few notches from horizontal , and side delt by placing the bench between 75 or 80 degrees from horizontal. Excellent tips!
