I've always bled brakes starting with the caliper furthest away but Land Rover don't, look it up, its drivers side front, passenger side front, drivers side rear then passenger side rear. That's from Land Rovers own manual, Haynes will tell you to do it starting with furthest away though. I can also recommend the Gunson eazibleed, uses low air pressure to push fluid through, just have to nip round each corner and open the nipple till clear fluid appears , no pedal pumping and cheap to buy
On the wheel bearings you can convert to the earlier 300tdi style by removing the spacer and buying the tab washers and lock nuts, this allows bearing adjustment rather than using the spacer 👍

Thats something ive never looked into in all honesty, like you ive just done it like all the others. Trust Land Rover to be different 🤣. I already have a pressure bleeder but did it like this because we have all been there when there is know one around and needed to bleed brakes 🤣

@@lifes.projects Hi Tom I think the reason bleeding Defenders is different is because the primary circuit is the two back wheels, the secondary is the two front wheels (from the land-rover manual) I tried a pressure bleeder but its a pain, too much faff unscrewing the bottle to top up and i also got a leak in the hose fitting on the bottle which spilled brake fluid everywhere which i had to mop up and hose off quickly. Much better with the pop bottle method i think.
I also ran into trouble when trying to replace the flexi hoses due to replacement copper brake pipes having been fitted at some time. They will just twist the pipe off when you try to undo the nut, so my method was to crack the nut enough to get movement (even if the pipe twists a little bit the bends in it allow this, then pull the retaining clip for the flexi hose and tap it out the bracket and then unscrew the flexi from the nut. Fitting the new one was just the reverse, worked great and i can leave replacing the brake pipe until later.

Nice one Tom, thanks. looks like we bleed brakes exactly the same way, I don't even bother with the pumping bit if the system hasn't been drained. Funny situation you have with those wheel bearings?? Very strange, though, having said that, pretty much every bearing on my 90 has been overloaded from the factory. I'll be fitting my bearings back on soon.. let's see what happens?

Like you said if the system hasent been drained you can gravity bleed it without any issues. I do it regular as VW / Audi group seem to turn the seals if the pedal is pushed too far when bleeding the brakes. Yes it was a strange one. Ive had them apart twice now and cant see anything wrong so just putting it down to the grease. Either way i will be checking them regular!
      Cheers Nigel

    Hi mate
Just come across your channel and love it doing some good work there from what I can see
I’ve done quite a few rebuilds converting Puma engine defenders in to 5.0 V8 ones as I work for jaguarlandrover Classic so will probably binge watch a few more uploads at some point over next free day
I take your a technician by trade and is your job on Landrovers
    Rich

Hi Rich Thanks for that glad you are enjoying them. Oooowww that sounds awesome. I would love to do that at some stage as I am a BIG V8 fan! Have a few other projects to sort before that day comes 🤣.
I have never actually worked for Land Rover but growing up my family have always had them as they are enthusiasts themselves so naturally i become abit obsessed.
When I left school I did an apprenticeship at a fantastic garage that worked on pretty much everything and I was lucky to receive fantastic training as they did everything properly (funny enough they hate 4x4s and vans 🤣) I had a brief spell in a Ford dealership and had a few different jobs before getting into HGVs and commercials which is where i am now.
I helped my Dad rebuild a Series 3 which was going to be my first car but had to sell as the insurance was ridiculous and many years later bought the Defender and here I now rebuilding it.
I have always been a massive LR guy and been abit OCD with things at times but thats how i like to be.
Deffo have a look at the other videos and let me know what you think.
      Thanks Tom

@@richardsadler8226 Ive had a telling off 🤣. Forgot to mention to you that I had a weeks course down at JLR Gaydon (obviously behind closed doors and no cameras allowed) when I was 15 as an Introduction to the motor industry. It was to show the design, manufacture and testing involving all the unseen prototypes etc I had booked to go the following year but JLR cancelled as not enough people booked on the course. The only photo allowed is what JLR took of me with the James Bond Villans Green Jaguar XKR.

Great vid, Noticed your hex head flange bolts wern't rusty are they stainless steel? mine had them for a while looked great with steel wheels but the heads started to fracture and crack so had to change them to hex head hardened steel. They started rusting within a week and dont look half as good but i do feel a little safer.

Thank you. No i don't think they are stainless just chrome coated. Now you've said I've had a look and not one has started rusting 🤔 I wouldnt mind knowing what make the flanges are as the bolts must be part of the kit

      Thanks Paul
Yes they are a pain. You dont have to bleed them if the push fit works but if it doesn't they are a right headache! Sure i used nearly a litre of brake fluid bleeding one of them up a few years ago.

@@GrumpsBarn If you have a fluid extractor try pull it through with that i also put a valve through the brake fluid top and attached abit of pipe so i didnt have to faf topping it up. Just turn it upside down and it did it by itself. Another thing to try that worked is fill up the master, close the bleed nipple and pump the clutch until you finally get something then wedge it down and open the nipple. Do that for about 5 times and you should get a pedal
