My first time watching Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio (2022). I sprung for this somewhat spur of the moment, but I'm so glad I did! This is a fairly mature version of the story full of incredibly moving themes such as loss, love, grief, goodness, death, fascism, and heroism. The stop motion animation is top notch and I loved this film! I hope you enjoyed my Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio movie reaction & commentary

As someone who remembers being a child afraid of not living up to my parents' expectations, and now a young parent myself wanting to help my own child carve out her own identity in this world... this movie hits soooo hard. You're right - it's absolute art and a work of pure passion and love. "What happens, happens. And then we are gone." Such a melancholy but strangely hopeful message. I'm obsessed.

I love this film. It might be one of my favorite adaptations of the story. And the fact Pinnochio stays a puppet, but in spirit is a real boy is inspired.

Absolutely! I definitely didn’t expect that, but it was fitting for the film.

This is what happens when people care about their craft and make art not flimsy movies built on empty spectacle that lose their sparkle.

Awesome reaction to an awesome film! I really think it deserves an Oscar nomination for best picture (not just best *animated* picture). Truly one of the best films of the year. I can see why Guillermo del Toro is so proud of this one. What a movie!

This film… you have no idea how much I love it. I think I watched it almost dozen time since its release. The thematic exploration of death and acceptance of it as part of life has been so helpful for me to work through the grief that defined the beginning of my adult life.

It took Guillermo Del Toro 10 years to make this movie happen. It had been shelved several times due to COVID, the script had to be rewritten several times, or Del Toro had to call in sick.
Anyway, hop this film gets an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and Best Animated Feature.

In his interviews, Guillermo del Toro said that this movie is not about Pinocchio becoming a real boy, but of Geppetto becoming a real father. It's easy to love a perfect child, anyone can do that. But it takes a real parent to love and accept an imperfect one.
I understand how audiences can be turned off by the film's deviation from the source material; I also prefer adaptations that stay faithful to the original novel. In this case though I love the liberties that GDT took when it comes to adding elements of fascism and religion. Everyone in the story is a puppet, save for Pinocchio. Spazz was a puppet of his master; Candlewick was a puppet of his father; and everyone was a puppet of the fascist government. The only independent thinker was the actual puppet. I also love the parallelism shown between a wooden boy and the wooden Christ on the cross. As a Catholic, I was taken aback by the scene where Pinocchio compared himself to Christ, but it prompts an exploration of what Jesus was like as a Son to the Father. (Also found that the name Geppetto is Joseph in Italian. *mindblown*)
Been following GDT's career since 2004 and he (and Alex Garland) are the only directors whose entire filmography I have seen. Such a shame that GDT always has problems with getting his movies financed, as they don't do well at the box office. (One of his best and most underrated work, the noir film Nightmare Alley, was a flop) I am happy that Netflix took a chance with this film. I am grateful that you did too.

I would like to add that scene where Pinocchio compared himself to Jesus, is also probably GDT expressing that Jesus was a sort of "monster" similar to Pinocchio or many other sympathetic potrayals of monsters throughout GDT's filmography. Not that Jesus was ugly, or monstrous, but the idea that Jesus was a socially distruptive figure. Highlighting the hypocrisy of the catholic church as a conservative institution, especially their participation with the Italian fascist regime after Mussolini rose to power.

@@pimtooler6370 what a fascinating take! I think that you are absolutely on to something. Pinocchio asked, "why do they love him?" while pointing at a crucified Christ on the cross. They didn't love Him at all; He was feared and hated, much more so than Pinocchio.

You should read or listen to the original story of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi to understand how this adaptation has merely borrowed the facade of the puppet to tell a story that is the inverse of the messaging of the original story. The original story of Pinocchio is essentially a set of philosophical/moral lessons written as a story that teaches naughty brainless boys what happens to them in the end if they don't find themselves and God. Walt Disney adapted it into a much more family friendly affair. Which is what I'm sure iz most people's yardstick to measure this story against but humbly I submit that they are wrong. The Story of Pinocchio is the OPPOSITE of a story where everyone gets their way or learns some heartfelt lesson in the end about being nice to people yada yada yada. Carlo would be telling these people they didn't learn a thing from reading his book. You aren't supposed to get to the end and say "how do we make this more family friendly?" Walt Disney is about as far as you would want to stray from the original story. But this... This missed the whole point. It's like rewriting a tragedy to give it a heartwarming positive spin. Like I'm sorry you didn't like the original story... But to rewrite it and then call it the same thing? Almost like you are trying to "correct" what they think is wrong with the original? I get it, we all like to be told what we want to hear, but It's kind of insulting to the original work, and completely missed the point. So it's kind of hard for me to like this, as competent as the filmmaking is. It ends up being revisionist history that ignores the lessons and intent of the original work, and replaces it with pablum for the masses. Just my (always controversial) opinion of course.

"You did bring me joy. Terrible, terrible joy."
I love this movie. My only complaint on an otherwise flawless movie, is the "Lying To Get Yourself Out Of Trouble" bit. It is a terrible lesson to teach children. Disney's "live action" version did the same thing and they were just as wrong.
Fun Fact: The longest stop-motion animated film.
Author Tribute Fact: Geppetto's (David Bradley) deceased son is revealed to be named Carlo (Alfie Tempest). This is most likely an homage to Carlo "Collodi" Lorenzini, who wrote the original Pinocchio story.
Let Me In Fact: Cate Blanchett told Guillermo Del Toro that she wanted a part in this film during work on Nightmare Alley, but the only character that hadn't been cast yet was Spazzatura, the monkey. To Del Toro's surprise, Blanchett wanted to voice the character anyway even though the monkey has little actual lines and spent most of the film making sounds.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: The reason the cricket (Edwan McGregor) is constantly subject to amusing injuries - one of which prominently involving a hammer - is likely a nod to his fate in the original book, where Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) got annoyed by him and smashed him with a hammer, and he spent the rest of the novel as a ghost. Not to mention, Sebastian is basically telling the entire story from beyond the grave.

Yes the lying to get out of trouble part does plague most adaptions of this film. Here however it is a little better than Disney’s seeing as the lies he used were so positive lol

    • @eddie142
      @eddie142 Рік тому +5

In fairness, Pinochio only does so with his father's permission. He isn't really lying TO anyone in the scene, and certainly not with any selfish intent. He says things that are meant to be understood to be incorrect by everyone in the room.
I can't really view it as an actual endorsement of lying so much as just playing off of a fantasy mechanic and removing it from its moralistic context for one scene.

This channel popped up as I was surfing along Disney stuff. I'm not sure that I quite understand it. People come here to watch someone else watch and comment on things that they themselves have already seen? These things have been edited, chopped up and in other ways altered to avoid having to pay the owners a copyright fee? I assume these channels turn some sort of profit. Simply genius. Income with zero investment !!

Kind of summed it up lol. I started watching reaction channels in 2020 and I found I could capture the feeling of watching some of my favorite films for the first time through their experience and I've found it pretty fun to hopefully do the same for some others.
The most challenging part is trying not to get copyright claims, as you pointed out. I personally believe these videos exist at the discretion of the studios. Even though they could fall under "fair use law" I personally think it's kind of a gray area.

@@CasualNerdReactions I was just considering the financial end of things. The content is free, a free open source editor like OBS and a decent mic to get started. The amazing part is the viewership. There are people willing to watch other people watch the exact same things they have already seen themselves. With literally the world at their fingertips, every college, museum, government archieve, not to mention free online classes and instructional videos...there are people that just want to watch other people watch stuff they have already seen. Not only that, many of these same people will watch the exact same content by other "reactors" and in many cases post the exact same comments. How sad and lonely these people must be. Editing content should be rather simple. Just watch another reactor to the same content and make a note of the cuts and edits. Anyway thanks for your response and good luck :)

@@nightfall902 If it's easier to understand this way, think of it as the parasocial version of showing a video you like to a friend. I do arrange to do movie nights with friends sometimes, but friends have schedules and responsibilities, and might not be interested at all. It's the same with simple hang out livestreams, where you just have a video of someone doing their chores in the background while you do your chores to feel like you have company.
They work because people are, indeed, lonely.
