My first time watching Contact (1997). A beautifully constructed story full of heart, and mystery while addressing the question of science versus faith in an intriguing and thoughtful way! I'm annoyed I didn't watch this years ago, but happy to share the experience with you! I hope you enjoyed my Contact movie reaction & commentary

He was one of the great Gatekeepers. He stood at the doorway of science, opening it and telling the world, "It's okay if you can't live here. You're always welcome to visit. Here, I'll show you around." I cried for two days when he died, I was so heartbroken.

The line "the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other" is very similar to an actual line Carl Sagan wrote in the original novel, about Ellie: “She had studied the universe all her life, but had overlooked its clearest message: For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”

Female protagonists in such alien movies are often a sign for an intelligent movie, imo. They are rarely written to shoot up everything they don't know (lot of typical male action heroes are written like that) and they genuinely want to communicate with the aliens in both movies. 😅

As an astronomy/astrophysics major in college during the late 70s to early 80s, I loved Carl Sagan. I wanted so bad to attend one of his lectures. When he published the book Contact in September of 1985, I immediately ran out and purchased a copy. It was fantastic, as was the movie adaptation several years later.
Although I decided to choose my faith over science, which led me into the ministry, I still love astronomy, physics, biology, etc.. Unfortunately, I have lost the majority of my vision, and I really miss staring up at the night sky and seeing the stars, constellations and even the moon. I also see no reason why scientists and people of faith can not get along, and be tolerate of each others belief system.
I love your reaction to this movie, as I believe it represented several viewpoints. So thank you once again.

I love that it was written by a scientist with the intent to bridge the gap between faith and science by encouraging the unending pursuit of answers that our existence as “intelligent beings” demands. It’s when we become complacent, dependent and stop asking questions, that we become undeserving of the gift that was evolved… or given.

"Dad, do you think there's people on other planets?"
"I don't know, Sparks. But I guess I'd say if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space."
Fun Fact: The "UFO ABDUCTION INSURANCE" banner across an RV is from a real company. Warner Brothers paid them to use their idea in the movie.
Filming Technique Fact: Robert Zemeckis asked Jodie Foster to repeat the pod scene six times, each time with a different expression (like intense joy, fear, and sadness), and the visual effects crew quickly morphed her face from one take to the next.
Waste Of Space Fact: The repeated comment that if humans were alone would "be a terrible waste of space" is a famous quote by author and producer Carl Sagan, who died during production. He was reportedly taking great care to ensure that science was accurately depicted in this movie. Sagan was to cameo as a member of the committee selecting an occupant for the machine, but died before the scene was filmed.
Clinton News Network Fact: President Bill Clinton's appearance was taken from an actual press conference on the White House South Lawn in 1997. His remarks were about the real-life discovery of an Antarctic meteorite that turned out to be from Mars. The altered footage caused some controversy, because CNN was unamused. A few years later, CNN banned the use of its logo in fictional movies. CNN reporters are not allowed to do movie cameos, though Larry King notably defied those orders.

I worked at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in the 1980's, the biggest metaphysical bookstore in the country. One of our vendors was an elderly German man who produced these lapel pins, very good quality "cloisonne" style. They depicted a circle of green on which a flag flew, a flag of five color stripes: black, brown, white, red, and yellow. Over this was a word, UNITY. It was his own private work towards bringing people together, promoting this flag he had designed. One day, he told me he had been contacted by Warner Bros. Apparently, they had sent someone to the Bodhi Tree to look for ideas for that enormous crowd scene, and they had seen the pins and contacted him. His flag is indeed in that scene, though you only seen it for a second as Ellie's car drives by. He was disappointed that it did not feature more, but still happy it got in where it could be seen. :)

One issue I had with the book was that, not long after the signal is decoded and the machine is being built, the signal from Vega stops.

This is one of the most important films to me about both faith and science. I tend to be a quite spiritual person with no belief in any religious traditions just a deep feeling of there is more that I will never understand (nor am I meant to) and a passion for science. To me, they are sides of the same coin. I was a little boy in the 1970s when I first discovered the amazing mind and heart of Carl Sagan through his epic tv series 'Cosmos'. By the time this came out, I was 25 and had read most of Carl's books. His words were almost magical.
What makes this film all the more bittersweet was that he passed before the film was done.
I actually wish that a sequel story existed...because the questions raised in this, will never truly be answered definitively, but the philosophical, spiritual, scientific, and emotional possibilities are so wondrous. We need more science fiction that encourages wonder and poses questions like the ones in this story...personally, I am so done with dystopias and horror-based sci-fi that it is astounding!
    Take care, Chris...great reaction!

Then the chair vibrated so hard it detached from the anchors and slams to the top of the ball, potentially injuring or perhaps killing her.

Chris - (This is a little off topic.) Nice to see Contact surface, as I have a personal connection to it and Jodie Foster. I was serving at the American Embassy in Tokyo in 1997, and at the request of Warner Brothers Japan hosted a showing of the film for Japanese media and show business personalities at the Ambassador's residence. RSVP's were coming in slowly until Warner Brothers announced that Jodie Foster would attend the event. Then suddenly we got a tsunami (I threw in a Japanese word) of acceptances, and many requests to attend from the uninvited. I got to hang out with Jodie and had a nice wide-ranging discussion re Contact, Japan, and the Foreign Service. Nice lady, very well spoken and learned, and a real pro at dealing with press and public. Thanks for the memories.

One of my favorite movies. Back in the day digital projectors didn't exist yet and in my country subtitles would be added. That combination sometimes meant projection quality wasn't what it could be, sometimes not perfectly focused or with an occasional dust particle on the film. But I saw this movie on my first trip to New York right after release on a huge screen late on a Tuesday night so the theatre was almost empty and the projection was crisp and perfect. When she was in the pod and it was rough and she noticed the pendant, she didn't unhook from the chair because she wanted to get the pendant, she noticed that even though her chair was being subject to extreme vibration and she was being shaken very rough, the pendant was just serenely floating in zero-G, and she realized that if she released her restraints and allowed herself to float, that she wouldn't be shaking around like that. The chair wasn't part of the design sent by the aliens, the humans added it for "safety" reasons, and it actually made things less safe than if it wasn't there at all. If she didn't unhook from the chair when she did because of the pendant, she might have gotten badly injured or killed when her chair was thrown into the ceiling seconds later.

I'm glad you finally got to see this film. ....and delighted that you seemed to be as moved by it as I was when I first saw it in the theater (gulp!) 25 YEARS ago.
Carl Sagan & his wife/partner Ann Druyan crafted a very life affirming (& science AND 'faith' affirming) tale of human openness to learning more about our place in the universe, and our inherent drive for growth.
This is one of my all time favorite films, and possibly my favorite 'First Contact' film (rivalled only by 'Arrival')
Thanks for posting this. It's always a joy to see someone else discover - and GET - this movie. 😁

Ironically, when her father gad told her he didn't think a radio could reach far enough to soeak to her deceased mom, there's actually been ongoing research within the parapsychology and paranormal field using radio frequencies to recieve contact from what's believed to be spirits of the departed. And actually, I've done so for the past 10 yrs. 😉

Most of the people missed the clue that the extraterrestrials gave to Ellie, when they took sand in his hands from the contact site, you can see a formation of lights like a constellation, the same "constellation" formed in Ellie's hand at the end of the movie, they said: 'small steps' so the next step was looking in the direction of that "constellation" formation?...

Robert Zemeckis (director) is one of the best! He also did Back to the Future and lots more!
I have always loved this movie, I have seen it probably 50x since it came out.
Matthew McConaughey can play any role, Jodie Foster is outstanding, and it is funny hearing him talk to her about time travel relativity (Interstellar)

They poked fun at this movie on South Park in an episode of Tom's Rhinoplasty, where Mr Garrison, the school teacher, gets a nose job, but ends up looking like David Hasslehoff. Anyway, after getting the surgery, Dr. Tom asks Mr Garrison if he like to watch a movie while his stitches heal. When he asks what they have, Tom says they have the movie CONTACT on VHS, which causes Garrison to vomit violently and tells the Doctor, "GOD NO, That movie was awful especially the ending!" Lol!!

This is a great movie. The first scenes where you travel backwards through time, so to speak, still sticks with me all these years later and I saw Contact in the theaters! Glad you enjoyed it. I thought the chemistry between McConaughey and Foster was a little forced, but his character was a great addition, and Tom Skerritt always dominates the screen.

Unlike Trek (which I love) the science here isn't gibberish - it's spot on. Most of the production had a very pedantic science advisor...Sagan himself. Sadly he merged with infinite before the film was completed.
Every atom in all of our bodies was born in the heart of a star. All billions and billions and billions of them in each one of us. RIP, Carl.

After Carl died, a friend of mine who was a science fiction writer was trying to get a new word started in his honor: *sagan,* _n._ - a unit of measurement equivalent to billions and billions; as in "There's a whole sagan of stars out tonight." I still use it, myself. :)

As someone who has grown over the decades with a lack of faith, especially due to my learnings of them, my position in the last few years has changed.
Similar to Ellie's experience, the first thing I asked upon my return from breaking through on DMT, each of the three times I have, was 'how long was I gone?'
The fundamental experience and the attempt to try and explain to those who watched until my return, impossible, just like her testimony.
The fortunate thing with my experience is the similar testimonies of those who have ventured beyond our understanding too. Everyone should experience, at least once.
Be well, peace and love from Scotland 🍻❤

Actually, there is some kind of connections between Contact and Interstellar (among those is of course both starring Matthew McConaughey). But both also delve further into the question of faith and love.

When Ellie took her "trip" and ended up on that beach and u said something like "is that the beach from her picture at the beginning of the movie". Now I honestly think it is. I seen that movie easily a dozen times and never thought about it that way. I just thought it was some random beach 2 make her feel more comfortable. But since those "aliens""downloaded" her thoughts 1 of them would b her thought of how the beach would look 2 her. Awesome observation 👍

A Christian/Scientist once told me, that his belief is that Religion and Science are not mutually exclusive. That, just because you believe in one view, does not necessarily negate the other view. He said that, if given enough time, Science will eventually prove the existence of God. While a lot of folks believe the two views are on "parallel tracks," those tracks will eventually merge into one track, and it will be not only through Religion, but Science as well.

I always loved this movie too. It’s a very positive and hopeful message and I wish we could find a way to bridge science and faith. There seems to be such a wall between the science and religious communities right now.

People find this movie at the right time for them, so don't be mad at yourself for it. I love the parallels between faith and science, but I believe the alien's reason for the way things are is because any great leaps forward will come from those two ideas working together, and this machine was the first step in leading a new world full of intelligent beings towards that truth.
This movie always leads me to a lot of contemplation of the universe and everything's place in it, especially mine. I know that matter is neither created nor destroyed, it just changes forms - and that includes all of the matter that makes us up, not only the body, but also the soul that escapes the body at death. Right now, no one knows what our soul-matter changes into and where it goes...
Thanks for watching this at a time when I needed to be reminded of all this again.

I'm more Agnostic now but I loved this movie as a kid, growing up in the "Christian Science" religion. It's always been easier for me to understand "God" in a metaphysical sense. Also, a few times in the movie it shows...I think it was the Corona Borealis constellation pattern or the Lyra's constellation pattern. Like when the Dad passes away and drops the pop corn...the pop corn forms that pattern. Also when she finds herself in "Pensacola in Space" and talks to the alien that looks like her Father, he dusts away grains of sand from his hand and what's left is that same constellation pattern. Neat little details.

I have no doubt that other life and even civilizations have existed, exist now and will exist somewhere, somewhen in the universe. The problem is that Distance = Time and vice versa. So the probability of any two being close enough at the same time to become aware of another much less communicate is slim and none. As one science fiction writer put it long ago, it's a Big Back Yard out there.
