My first time watching Sunshine (2007). This film is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! I was completely awestruck from the very beginning and it only got better from there. I am so grateful I get to share this experience with you! I hope you enjoyed my Sunshine movie reaction & commentary

I found this film as mesmerizing as I did terrifying! What are your thoughts on Sunshine? Coming up this week and next: Firestarter, Sorcerer, & Rope!
Super under-appreciated...and more than just a little like 2010? Maybe just me.
Thanks, Chris. This is another film that I hadn't heard of. The whole premise of this story is mind boggling. Somewhere a DVD of this film is being bought.
Garland and Boyle fudge some of the science, but they evoke the awe and enormity of our tiny, tiny part of the galaxy, and in that context something special about humanity is expressed. The paradox of our species, that we are both special and trivial, isn't demonstrated better in any film I've seen.
this came out limited release I had to watch it in an old school theatre with a pull down screen....and its one of my all time favorite sci fi movies....Danny Boyle is a fantastic director. Id recommend checking out Moon with Sam Rockwell.....
This movie gives you the satisfaction of the consequences of the wrong decision.
It is just pure genus to do so.
The whole cast did such an amazing performance. No character is one dimensional and they all have different archs.
I wept at the ending too, the combination of this heroic deed, Underworld’s music, the sublime visual contrast of the sun as some sort of spiritual force and the fission as an intellectual force meeting, with Cappa held in suspended animation between them both….just superb.
No other sci-fi movie like it.
We've all seen the regular sci-fi milieus...aliens, planets, etc... but nothing about going to the SUN to reignite it and thus saving the earth.
Original, high production values and special effects brought forward exceptionally well by a seasoned director and cast. Well done on all fronts 👍
I went to a theater to see this. I was literally the only one there. I was mesmerized as well. Went back to see it a total of 3 times in theaters. One of my favorites, so underrated.
Great reaction to one of the most unknown films of all time. To me its a masterpiece, and it shows just how talented Danny Boyle is.
You and I literally had the same reaction. The ending was so breathtaking that only tears came down.
Watched it 5 times since my first viewing. This is a visual masterpiece
A criminally underrated film. I only know a few people that have seen it! It was never shown on IMAX, but my buddy had the pleasure of seeing it in a small theater in San Francisco... ON FILM! He said it was one of the most amazing experiences ever. This is definitely somewhere on my list of favorite films.
This is the movie that got me into the sci-fi genre. It's so good and I love how in the first half it focuses on science fiction purely and in the second half it becomes a psychological thriller as well. One of the best and most underrated films ever made. An absolute masterpiece. I love how raw and unpredictable it is with the plot it's so interesting and captivating. Danny Boyle's peak. The soundtrack is legendary, the visuals are amazing and the characters are so realistic and relatable it's got so much mystery to it despite it being bleak and depressing (everyone keeps dying slowly). In my opinion the greatest space movie of all time.
IMO one of the most underated movies. A true gem and a incredible soundtrack.
Thank you for this. This is a gem. It is amazing how much the Sunshine theme is used in other things. Not surprising tho. It's bliss...
Danny Boyle never disappoints me. Even his lesser entry, The Beach, still has some great performances and beautiful shots.
He doesn't work in the same genre often, and his sci-fi entry is a gem. Sunshine is incredible from top to bottom. An amazing cast (all but 2 are names in DC or Marvel), amazing score, and amazing cinematography.
Easily my favorite performances from Chris and Cillian.
And even though you never fully see his burned face, the way Mark Strong delivers his lines is chilling. "Are you an angel?" from a man who has been alone with his god for so long always sends a shiver up my spine.
What does being in Marvel or DC movies have to do with being "an amazing cast"? 😆 🤣 😂
This movie is criminally underrated.
I regret not having seen it in theaters.
Such a great, underrated movie.
Just let me write 5 Words... An auditory and visual masterpiece!❤
Lemme guess.
Is it the surface of the sun?
Only dream I ever have.
Every time I shut my eyes it's always the same.
Good narration! One of my favorite movies of the last 15 years. Soundtrack was impeccable.
Yes! This one really caught me off guard because I hadn’t heard of it, but it was so great!
My favourite film of all time, thank you for reacting to it🥲🥲
This is one of my all time favorite movies!
This movie was breathtaking in cinema. The sound I remember was insane. Danny Boyle is such a great director.
Another solid movie. I love this one. The most devastating death in this has to be the one where they missed the entrance by a slim margin and just flies off into space
Would definitely be the most terrifying to live through I think.
This is a go to Sci fi when people ask what to watch. So, so good.
Good rec!
I was lucky enough to score free passes to the media screening of this movie at a local theater. It was the screening they have for critics and such. It was two days before the actual release of the film, and I got the passes from a local radio dj, that liked my band. Lol! It's an amazing film, and I still listen to the score on Spotify.
I think I rented this on dvd randomly and not knowing a thing about it. Blew my mind and loved it.
What a great surprise!
The music is perfection
It really is! 👏
I love hearing Adagio in D Minor in other movies/shows, but it never has the same kind of feeling as it does in this movie with Kanada’s scene.
I'd love it if you looked at "The Fall" by Tarsem Singh, in my opinion an overlooked gem, and visually breathtaking.
Yes! The Fall is amazing - beautiful visuals, and I love the scenes between Roy and Alexandria!
There's a TON of supplemental material on this movie, explaining everyone's backstory and why the sun is going out in a way totally contrary to science. Usually this kind of thing really annoys me, as my mantra is "If you come up with important information but leave it out of the story, guess whose fault it is when people don't understand the story?". But here I don't mind so much as none of it is really essential to understanding what's going on in the film itself.
Oddly I had a similar thought! I was watching a film recently and felt frustrated because I didn’t know the characters or ubeer stand their motivations. Here while they don’t give any backstory, the importance of their mission and the sheer scale of the visuals i wasn’t bothered at all by the lack of character info. It’s cool it exists though.
Yea same up it's own ass style as "Donnie Darko" and "Primer" If you can't tell the story in the move, don't waste everyones time and money making it.
You said it.. this movie is breathtaking. Awesome score and acting is top notch.
I love this movie. It's so fantastic & uplifting (?maybe?) & so...sad at the same time. Awesome cast all the way around. The visuals, the music. Just really, really great.
Uplifting is an interesting choice, oddly I kind of get it.
It's a fascinating movie, equating the sun with God. It works. I respect so many characters who were willing to kill or even give up their lives to save the mission. How the mission's value transcended their trivial morals and self existence. This is ultimately a movie about some kind of spiritual journey. I'm just not sure how to decode it really
Oh wow, my favourite sci fi movie ever! Looking forward to this!!
...and it didn't disappoint! ;)
Glad to hear it!
I'm so ashamed I missed your reaction of this! One of my all time favorites.
It’s a great one to be sure!!
With Mace, during the apology scene, it showed that he's bad with diplomacy and compromise. He's driven and doesn't like it when he's not seen as correct
I wasn't a fan of Mace too. Like yeah he's a greatly skilled and a talented engineer and helps in bringing the ship back online that's commendable and admirable but he's so insecure and an overly sarcastic asshole throughout this whole movie. It's hard for me to root for him because he's so confrontational, argumentative and aggressive he always initiates things out of pure spite and is generally not well intentioned the way he acts or speaks. Just prefers physical altercations. Almost like this bully type of character. His persona didn't work well on me because he always has to know best out of everyone and never listens to anyone but himself and doesn't respect opinions different from his own. Which is a sign of bigotry and egotism.
Chris Evans always plays these douchey types of characters he has this arrogant look towards him. Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne and Mark Strong are the main reasons why I liked and adored this movie so much the first time I watched it and maybe some of the rest of the crew. The chemistry is amazing too between them you get this claustrophobic, uneasy, dark and a bleak feeling. I didn't respect Mace that much but I'm glad he did something finally useful instead of bashing the people he was working with "for making the wrong decisions" ugh. I guess he's supposed to pull the American audience in or those who like "tough guys". Very stubborn, pessimistic and unfriendly. He's good at what he does but he must be hell to work with.
@Sigurjon96 really, Mark Strong? His character was just an afterthought. An underdeveloped character with mania. I agree with your assessment about Mace. I never thought about that before. Interesting. Maybe I liked that he was willing to take control, since Murphy and Byrne's characters couldn't.
Saw this in the cinemas when it first came out here in Sydney. One of my favourite sci-fi movies along with 2001: A Space Odyssey and AI: Artificial Intelligence.
"Kaneda, what do you see?"
Suppose we continue without secondary and succeed - Mission success!
Suppose we continue with Main load - Succeed for Fail, we have a secondary!
One of those horror movie decisions. In what should never have been a fucking horror movie.
Just subscribed. I found you utterly amazing 🎉 look forward to seeing more content. What a GREAT review
Outside of the ending to Alien3 this is the only sci-fi movie that's made me bawl my head off 😭 It got lots of great reviews when it came out about 14-15 years ago or so and still holds up. Thank you for the upload 👍😘
New to your channel, thank you for being one of the only ones Ive ever seen to react to this movie! That said, have you seen a sci-fi horror movie called ‘Pandorum’? It’s so good and I highly recommend it.
Love this film so much
What about the score? John Murphy made one of the most impactful score of any movie in this film!
underwatched movie, everyone should watch it at least once. they made the sun scenes really mesmerizing plus... that one scene where they went to where Icarus I was, it was like being jumpscared by flashes of dead people.
It started as intriguing Science Fiction of human nature and ingenuity overcoming an existential stelar threat and making the first steps toward a class 1 Civilization (well class 0.5 anyways), then took a hard left into weird Sunburn zombie murder flick when they caught up with Icarus 1. There's a reason the original trailer only showed the big money first act SFX and Adagio in D. Because no way they would have even managed what they made on the movie with this "What if a Dr. Who episode happened and the Doctor never showed up" Plot the movie ended with.
I was there in 06 watching the trailer and waiting for this amazing movie that looked like legitimate HARD Science Fiction. Then 2007 gave us Sunburn Murder Zombie....
Give it credit for what worked though, rewatch the good scenes
Yes! Been waiting for this one 😊
I watched this movie completely spur of the moment because it was on TV and I didn't want to go to bed. It really stuck with me. Came in knowing nothing and was not disappointed. I was so taken aback by the beauty mixed with danger. Utterly gorgeous shots of disaster in progress. The people all felt real and their motivation is realistic. No idiot making an obviously bad call (except the Icarus I captain I guess). Just people in a situation given difficult decisions trying their best. I really need to see this again
Such an excellent film! Great reaction Chris!
Thanks, Tracey!
This would absolutely be on my list of the top 10 sci-fi films of all time. They take some liberties with the science, but all within acceptable margins I think. Certainly far less intellectually absurd than something like Interstellar. The characters are absolutely amazing. Mace is right about everything, even if he was an asshole about it. I love the way that when the simulation was unclear with regard to changing course, they chose to fall back to the logic. I still think they made the wrong choice, but their methodology is commendable, and too rarely seen these days.
If you want to watch some films with insane soundtracks/scores, watch The Fountain and Oblivion. edit: Requiem for a Dream also has a really good score.
Oblivion and Sunshine's soundtracks are some of my favorite OSTs ever!
Great movie, great cast.
I don't love it like Shallow Grave or Trainspotting, but this is a very interesting film.
this movie is true masterpiece
It will become a cult classic im sure!
The marketing for this movie was brilliant. They actually showed the death scene for every character online and then asked if the sun would survive. There has never been another film marketed in the same way before or since.
That is definitely unique! I’m not sure how I’d feel about it if I’d seen it first.
@@CasualNerdReactions its partially the marketing that has me list this as one of the ten most important films ever made. It's probably the only time that "the greater good" has been depicted so clearly in a film. All the math scenes about two last best hopes, the life of a single man against humanity. hands down one of the greatest films ever made. Cillain did a really interesting interview talking about starting the film with personally held non-secular beliefs and walking away from the production as an atheist as a result of that mathematics. It is always like number four on my list of films that every human being should watch because of how beautifully it delves the subject matter.
The only Marketing I saw in 2006/7 was the big trailer that made the movie look like it was quality Science Fiction.
I stopped ever trusting trailers after this one.
Sounds interesting, never heard of that before.
Watching this long time ago just because chris evans 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
Unfortunately in the end all crew died 😭😭😭💔💔💔
Those subliminal flashes were pics of the other crew. Very spooky.
Indeed! Of all the experimental choices, this was one that I thought worked really well.
Wow. Intense.
Your friend has very good taste in movies. Trust smart people, not polls. I also have a list for you
Great film ❤ masterpiece
Great movie! Great review! I wish more people went to see this when it was in theaters. I think the title is misleading and people missed out. Really though, what else could you call it?
an utterly existential film. I cant explain the visceral feeling I get when I think about it. The soundtracks are so beautiful. People are missing out astronomically on this movie
It totally boggles my mind how more people don't react to this
@@dr.lionhunter9988 hey! I've seen your comments on multiple videos related to SUNSHINE. I've also watched the video made about it. More people gotta see it
@@NT_1 Yes sir, actually have another sunshine video coming out very soon. So please keep an eye out for that!
I want to recommend the 1952 movie The Wreck of the Mary Deare
Set at sea not in space but oddly very similar to this movie in the way it makes you feel as you watch it. Sunshine is in no way a copy or a rip off but the two films are both in the same amazing class.
I highly recommend it!
Outstanding film
I was immediately in love with space after this movie I think you'll like Passenger also
Life (the one with Jake Gyllenhaal) and The Fountain, other good choices. Passengers is unfairly maligned
Have you watched Trainspotting? That one put Danny Boyle on the map and is a big cultural milestone movie here in the UK
I haven't! I'll have to look it up.
Can't go wrong with a Danny Boyle movie. Gripping from start to finish. Almost wept for Kaneda and Mace for their bravery and Corazon for her heart (pun intended) and passion for her plants.
I was completely immersed in the movie, feeling like I'm there with the team, until they pulled a M. Night Shyamalan twist and I was sucked right out. So to me, Sunshine is better on a second watch when you know it better. Like that friend who talks about aliens all time time then suddenly pulls you over to discuss Plato. It catches you off guard and then you learn to appreciate their different sides.
One last thing, of all the names in the world, they had to call the two ships Icarus and no one said that's a bad idea?
Oh yes. Definitely a few things near the end that threatened to take me out of it. A credit to the overall film that they didn’t succeed. I agree, Icarus was a clever- but poorly chosen name haha!
@@CasualNerdReactions He also did a sudden tone change at the end of Slumdog Millionaire and that movie got a ton of awards (deservingly so, imo). Must be a creative experimentation, but I'm just speculating.
Quick question but feel free not to give a definite answer: once they become available for streaming, do you have plans of reacting to Doctor Strange 2 and The Bad Guys (June 6, Peackock)?
Definitely planning on Dr Strange. 1 week spoiler free. 😅 hoping it’s on Disney plus in June 🤞
The Bad Guys looks great, but not planning on reacting at the moment. I’m hesitant to venture into animation because I’ve for sure seen just about any animated film worth reacting too. 😅
@@CasualNerdReactions That's great! I'm looking forward to your reaction to Doctor Strange 2. Be careful with YT spoilers. I saw the movie on its first day, but someone already posted major spoilers in their thumbnails and titles a day before. There's even more of those now.
The Bad Guys is Ocean's 11 with anthromorphic main characters. I absolutely love it. But some found it too predictable. I get how it won't be enjoyable for a number of people. 🙂
If you haven't seen it, check out 'Moon' starring Sam Rockwell. It has a similar vibe. It's incredible.
What happens when the most underrated get togeeeeeether....
It’s a Murphy’s Law film because it has a Murphy in it…
Nailed it. 👏
Watch event horizon next bit different but cult classic soon !!! X
Sunshine is a great 3/4 of a Movie!
We don't talk about the last Quarter.
*Everyone'll* say I'm wrong, which...cool:
The unseen Danny Boyle flick _Millions_ is a heart-warming work of genius. Very misbalanced, but *all* Boyle (like Sunshine) is misbalanced, so whatever.
Balance is over rated unless you’re a gymnast.
@@CasualNerdReactions I used to be a karate-man...it mattered there too, gosh darn it!
At this point, tho, any kid from Cobra Kai could likely paint a fence with me.
(I initially typed "wax me off" and then realized that that *really* doesn't sound ok. 🤔🤨☹️)
Regardless...Chris and anyone else: dig the trailer to Danny Boyle's _Millions_ (2005)! It's brilliant!
A 2 0 0 7 movie watched by you
in 2 0 2 2 . Considering the title
choice . . . very nice kiddo .
If I were doing it today I’d be tempted to tweak the ending of the film a bit… lol
If sunshine would be real and I would be on board, i would definetly be a guy, would look at the sun as bright as you can look at it. Bathing it's warmth like that villain In the end.
It would be a sight to see!
I... I can't stand this movie. 4/10.
Fun Fact: For the scene in which Chris Evans' character Mace is fixing the Icarus 2 in the coolant, to make his breath appear that it was cold, Evans was actually entering extremely cold water with each take. His teeth chattering is a real reaction.
Bonus Fact: Danny Boyle originally planned for there to be a sex scene between Capa (Cillian Murphy) and Cassie (Rose Byrne) in the ship's oxygen garden. He eventually scrapped it because he felt that the idea of sex and romance in space would be too ridiculous.
nice facts, thank you! I'm with you, 4/10 for me, I loved the sci-fi elements and a lot of the story, I didn't care for the abrupt switch to straight slasher, I love horror don't get me wrong, just feels like it could have been done differently and better. the end scene is beautiful though.
Ironically the sex scene would have made the trainwreck at least fit the Slasher Genre Tropes. As it is, the Sunburn murder Zombie didn't even have that going for him.
@@mzaite "Sunburn murder zombie" lol that is perfect
@@AbsoluteApril you love a lot of things about this movie and you still give it a 4/10 (below average) like it was some Fast and the furious or Transformers movie. Come on thats stupid
@@leob4403 when half the movie turns into a dumb slasher, it loses at least half it's points :P
The minute they deviated from their mission, all credibility went out the window and I didn't care if any of them lived. Selfish buffoons.
It was like the move suddenly flipped channels to a middling Dr Who episode that the Doctor never showed up in.
Well they did make an argument for why they did it, they would have two payloads instead of one
