There is a strong statistical correlation between mental health problems (and we can count alcoholism and addiction as part of that) and homelessness. Of course, we all know that correlation does not mean causation, as well as we can't state if homelessness contributes to mental health problems or vice versa, and to what degree. We can say that there is a definite strong link though. Do you remember "GroundHog Day" the movie where Bill Murray's character tries to save a homeless guy by feeding him, but with each reiteration of that same day the old man dies anyway? So I personally approve of Benjamin giving this street person a beer. Remember this old man in Chernobyl exclusion zone that Ben found and later visited again with some food and obviously alcohol? As well as an old lady too. In Ukraine there is virtually no chance these older folks will get public or private help. Ben can't save them (just like those homeless dogs in Armenia was it -- he did smuggle a kitten from Cuba to Belgium though), so some food and/or a beer is a kind gesture.

I've been living in Kharkiv for my whole life and can relate. Most of the people use E-Tickets (you can put whatever banknote you want into their terminals with the exception of 1s and 2s for whatever reason) to avoid the "only 10 UAH" nonsense. The peculiar thing is that every little shop located in the metro station has a sign "No change". You literally have to plan ahead your metro ride, and always be sure, that you have the right banknote on hand if you don't have E-Ticket.
There are also a couple of new trains, and they look pretty good, a lot less "soviet". And a relatively new station called "Pobeda" ("Victory Station") looks extremely modern compared to all the other stations. The center of the city actually looks kinda great. The parks and the architecture are beautiful, in my opinion. Be sure to check that out if you are planning to visit Kharkiv again.
Anyways, thanks for the video, wasn't really expecting you to film my home city :)

I just discovered this Vlog, and am enjoying it a lot. It's edited well, narrated well, and gives viewers a good sense of what it's like to be there. I know this because I've been to Ukraine several times, and have lived and taught in Russia on two separate occasions. Lots of the places he visits are familiar to me. These vlogs brought back nice memories.
That said, I wanted to add this comment to viewers and fans. The wide range of adventures BB takes us to, his ease, comfort, safety, and yes popularity with the ladies :-) rely *extensively* on his Russian fluency. I know this because I also speak Russian reasonably well. Knowing the language means you can get out of the cities, explore the tiny villages in the provinces, visit abandoned Soviet sites, hang out in bars, get lodging at the last minute, hop on trains when you like, take cabs and not get ripped off, easily make friends with strangers, etc. All that is *much* easier than it would be for non-Russian speakers. I've done all these things, but I was confident doing them only because I knew the language.
If you don't have a decent comfort level with Russian, I strongly suggest you stay in the big cities like Moscow, St Petersburg, Kiev, and maybe Odessa. Without Russian fluency your experience will be, in my opinion, much more complicated and risky. Also, stay away from Ukraine right now for obvious reasons :-).
I lived and taught in Russia in 2001 and 2009. I went to Ukraine several times between 2010 and 2014 to date and find a wife (we were married in 2014). This is an excellent vlog, many thanks to you sir! --BF
