Hey, I am from Ukraine (Mariupol), living in Australia for 10 years now. Thank you so much for bringing back good memories and also showing people what Ukraine is like - so many people have no idea where Ukraine even is! Your Russian is getting better by the day :D
I am from Kryvyi Rih and I'm glad that you finally get a chance to visit it. You should've visited a Liberation Square, the biggest floral clock in Europe and an Ingulets district - the most beautiful district in Kryvyi Rih
Would strongly recommend a second visit to the city to check out the quarries and mines. After all, the city owes its existence to iron ore deposits. Also, some of the older (early-mid 50’s) neighborhoods are true time capsules as they have barely changed since being built.
I was a consultant for the large iron ore mining operation, in 1994, advising on types of pumps that could be used to move various sizes of ore as it became smaller and smaller within sludge. I believe the company I was subcontracting to was a Slovakian firm out of Kosice and was named 'Univerz'. If I remember correctly. I do recall drinking many little glasses of vodka. LOL
I've listened to you talking for so much time I no longer need subtitles to understand what you're saying, because of you I've mastered the English listening skill
Ah, yes, Krivoy Rog (Cow's Horn). I've lived there at different times over the past 25 years. (in Ukrainian language: Kriviyy Rig, pronounced Kreevee Rih). I have an apartment near the old market section where the city center and government buildings are located. I truly enjoy the city and the fascinating places to visit there. The National University of Ukraine is directly across the street from the Circus. Thanks for making the video, I enjoyed it immensely!
That’s what bald and bankrupt does to people. About a year ago I had almost no interest in visiting the former soviet union. Now I want to go there to find a soviet toilet.
One of the great features Bald does is show us in detail the mundane, the interesting and the different. I love seeing the hotel rooms because you really feel like you could've been there. You get a real sense of the place thanks to him. He has ignited in me wanderlust.
If you look at Kryvyi Rih from Google Maps satellite view, you'll see why the city is so long and oddly massive. It was built based on access to the mines surrounding the city.
not that unusual ... take moscow for example ... they recently added a long south western bound giant leg to it .... or the citys in china even bigger... they all have such huge sizes ...
Yeah, the Google Maps imagery for Kryvyi Rih is pretty trippy. So many massive pit mines, and you can even see the toxic smoke rolling out of some impressive smokestacks. Almost reminds me of Norilsk.
I always wonder if the people like Victor ever know how many people have seen them on the internet and enjoyed their stories. So cool. Hope he somehow sees this video.

I remember seeing "Krivoy Rog" advertised at the East Berlin airport at Schönefeld and was always intrigued about it. Same for another town also frequently advertised "Mineralnie Vody". Wondering what the connection with East Germany was that made flights from East Berlin to these two towns important. Thanks for showing us these places!
been a few times here in an "Otzcepnoj vogon" (a loose rail-carriage)... the train arrived in the morning and continued with a different train at 3 in the afternoon, so one had plenty of time to explore... it was never quite like in that book, at least not in the Late 80s... & the book seems nearly of thesame date... but yes, if anything, it probably looks more like it was meant to then... it was much more industrial, with a lot of very worn tired looking men huddled around Kiosks in the streets... The Park imn.Pravda had a number of small carousels and swings back then (I was 5ish maybe), it was also filled with frogs. also, vegetable snacks were sold at the station and on the corners from newspaper cones.
Lol those "metro" trams. I used to ride them back in the 80's in Czechoslovakia. The Czechs sold all their old trams to Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, North Korea and elsewhere and these trams are still in use. Awesome!
@@matrixfull i guess it's simplier to make tram lines instead of metro lines. Also there are just couple of stations underground and the others are on the groung
@@matrixfull I guess for the same reason you put any train underground. It's too difficult to build it above ground. Possibly buildings in the way, streets too narrow. If the city really has a centre, I'd say that's where it is! You don't go to the extra expense of putting the tram into a tunnel otherwise!
I'm also in the US, I left Ukraine through Donetsk back in 2007 because that was where the airport was located... I've heard a lot of bad things have happened in that area since💀

Great video about my hometown!
Fun fact: the last monument was actually in another park nearby, they've moved it some years ago to the park next to it. Imagine the complexity to move that huge thing! 😂
Your video also made me think how we are not safekeeping the treasuries of our city... recently a great soviet building, cinema "Sovremennik" was demolished, such a shame!
Ah that clears up a little mystery for me because although I knew it was the same monument I could not work out why the building in the background was no longer was in the same place. Also people kept sending me in different ( probably to the former ) location. Cheers.

Your grammar and punctuation are excellent. The only mistake is it should be awfully.
Your English is off the chain, comrade.
I never expect to get so obsessed with the history of the Soviet Union but bald and bankrupt gave me an opportunity to explore and do the research and me ended up reading books about the history of the Soviet Union that I'm a hundred percent ain't got a clue about these amazing countries before and after the collapsed, thank you so much for your time making videos like this TAKE CARE AND STAY SAFE brother ❤🙏
same goes to me.. it's keep haunting me for no reason to explore more n more..
There was a collapse for a reason. Look at modern day Cuba for an example.
Hi Benjamin I don't know if you would see this but a series about the post- Yugoslav countries would be a treat to watch. Diving into Yugoslav history it's legacy and perhaps compare and contrast with the Soviet union
That would be excellent and really interesting to see. He was in Serbia already, but I think not in others countries of ex-yu, at least not making videos there.
Would be cool
Mhm croatia has some amazing little villages in the Mountains Where all the bullet holes and Other witnesses of war are still present. Very interesting imo!
Yugoslavia has an incredible history and I've LOVE to see him cover it.

LOL

Well said! His videos are inspiring
The part where you convinced the Lada driver to drive you around proves that you are Slav at heart. You know how to speak with Slavic people!
In Warsaw in 1985 a local drove me around looking for a hotel. I offered to pay him but he refused.
If you look at Kryvyi Rih from Google Maps satellite view, you'll see why the city is so long and oddly massive. It was built based on access to the mines surrounding the city.
Great insight !
not that unusual ... take moscow for example ... they recently added a long south western bound giant leg to it .... or the citys in china even bigger... they all have such huge sizes ...
It's 50km long if somebody doesn't have time to check by himself.
Yeah, the Google Maps imagery for Kryvyi Rih is pretty trippy. So many massive pit mines, and you can even see the toxic smoke rolling out of some impressive smokestacks. Almost reminds me of Norilsk.
Would you look at that, an informative comment, appreciate it mate.

been a few times here in an "Otzcepnoj vogon" (a loose rail-carriage)... the train arrived in the morning and continued with a different train at 3 in the afternoon, so one had plenty of time to explore... it was never quite like in that book, at least not in the Late 80s... & the book seems nearly of thesame date... but yes, if anything, it probably looks more like it was meant to then... it was much more industrial, with a lot of very worn tired looking men huddled around Kiosks in the streets... The Park imn.Pravda had a number of small carousels and swings back then (I was 5ish maybe), it was also filled with frogs. also, vegetable snacks were sold at the station and on the corners from newspaper cones.

why did they think trams are good idea underground? i'm really curious. i'm sure there must be some logic behind it?
@@matrixfull i guess it's simplier to make tram lines instead of metro lines. Also there are just couple of stations underground and the others are on the groung
@@matrixfull I guess for the same reason you put any train underground. It's too difficult to build it above ground. Possibly buildings in the way, streets too narrow.
If the city really has a centre, I'd say that's where it is! You don't go to the extra expense of putting the tram into a tunnel otherwise!
