This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. Alex is someone who is used to being judged superficially, so it's quite ironic of him to judge Serena for her true appearance, when he literally knows what that's like. That made me kind of sad.

I've never seen a cartoon with such human-like characters. I rarely ever binge-watch anything, but I made time for this. Downtown is such a rare gem.
Have I ever told you that; the 'Daria' cartoon series is the reversed of the 'Family Circus'🎪 characters, Billy Jr, Dolly, Jeffy and PJ?
It's just that I didn't tell you that the 'Daria' cartoon series wasn't made by a Christian.

You can tell that Serena had a thing for Alex. For her to ditch her goth getup and dress normal means she was willing to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. She saw Alex as someone she didn't have to build a persona around to enjoy his company. For someone to go to great lengths to change the way they act/look means more than just seeing each other as friends. But Alex had to blow it.
At least Alex learned his lesson in the end and accepted Serena without the goth image
It's pretty interesting that even from early on, behind his low self-esteem he was really nailing it, at the Con he was going to make out with Serena, he lacked the support from people who basically knew him based on nothing but his self doubt and insecurities. He might've been a nerd, but hey, the big guy working at the comic shop doing fighting on the side also had a micronaut collection. Alex really grew a lot up to the last episode only lacking self awareness of his self confidence.
She took off her armour... Symbolically tho.. That one film called submarine talks about this.. The girl becomes trusting and vulnerable and the guy completely goes off her..
Its happens alot more than people realise i think
Selena ditching her gothic appearance was a test to see if Alex meant what he said about people being more than what they wear. He just wanted women to look past his geeky appearance and accept him for who he was, yet he wasn't willing to do the same for Selena when she looked "basic". I think Selena became interested in something more with Alex, but after seeing his double standards decided to just stay friends.
@@ohhellobethany I liked the outcome & that he’ll remain in the friend zone for dehumanising her. In the end, the “good guy geek” turned out to be just as human, hypocritical, shallow & was just giving her lip service.
As a goth girl who’s dealt with guys like Alex, I always liked Serena as a character and this episode in particular. I love goth music and the style but sometimes I don’t wanna dress up all fancy, and some guys don’t get that. They lose interest if I look more casual. So yeah, super relatable lol.
That's a shame. If you end up with someone or you're with someone now I hope they adore you for who you really are
And the ironic thing is, most guys that claim to want a “goth” girl, don’t actually like real goth girls, they usually go for the E-Girl tiktoker Melanie Martinez type of girls, not the ones who are actually goth and listen to stuff like sisters of mercy and Bauhaus and stuff like that.
@@marioncarbonell6047Tbf I like any girl who just doesn’t look basic as fuck. I like any sort of goth, alt, or hippie look. That shit is cute as fuck and they’re always way more interesting and imo have cuter/nicer personalities, at least from my experience.
@yo_yo_master99 yea I know there’s different styles of Goth like industrial, Victorian, deathrock, etc. but you’ve gotta admit it, the new egirl aesthetic has nothing to do with the subculture nor the music, and I don’t even feel like the aesthetic matters much when it comes to the music, bands like Joy Division, Killing Joke, Sisters of Mercy all dressed pretty normal and the ironic thing is, they even hated being labeled goth lol. I love post-punk/goth rock but I dress pretty normie.
@@bblue651 in my experience man, never judge a book by its cover, ironically sometimes the basic looking girl can come full of surprises, sometimes they might even know about rock/metal music more than alternative girls because their dads or other family members got them into the music, and have a lot of personality. me personally I had terrible experiences with alternative girls, they were all very self-absorbed, had intense emotional baggage and trauma, mental instability, daddy issues, and instead of talking things out, they’d harm themselves and cheat on me, pure gaslighting, manipulation, and torture lol. And sometimes the alternative girls might look alternative, but they don’t really like the music or subculture, they just do it for the looks and sometimes they’re just one of those “pick me” girls, and are super predictable, I don’t want to sound like an incel but that’s just been my experience. I look like a normie but I jam out to sepultura, morbid angel, exodus, entombed because of my metalhead uncles, so yeh, never judge a book by its cover and give different girls a try.
I just realized Chaka might have accidentally saved that kid from an even worse trip or worse……

@@tthecatts it was a common thing in America where older kids stole candy from younger kids on Halloween. It was horrible lol. So that kid probably prepared a poisoned bag on purpose. And she is wearing a native american costume which could also be interpreted as her getting revenge.

This is my instant one of favourite series
I like that this pointed out the hypocrisy and shallowness of men who go for a certain type of girl for their looks and the fantasy they create of the girl instead of going for who the girl is as a person.
Goes to show most men dont know how to actually vet women and then complain about how she “changed”
If anything, this helps guys to understand that better about women
Same can be said for women too though, things like the whole "I only date men above 6 foot" come to mind.
To be fair women do the exact same thing. Men are more likely to settle however, at least based on my observations

Because people know that these are better than the same Family Guy like "adult" cartoon. These actually have style.
Fast forward to July 2020 Beavis and Butthead, mission hill, clone high, daria spin-off, and who knows what else is slowly getting rebooted.
i feel so bad for serena. she seems so genuinely kind and she just wanted to see if alex really liked her for who she was. i’m kinda jealous of him. she’s so pretty even with the new look.
What a dog gone shame this series got cancelled. Perfect natural dialogue, social commentary, pop-culture references. Time capsule of awesomeness.

Goat actually gave very good advice to Alex about not ditching Serena just because she changed her apperence, albeit mixed with perversion, but very insightful wisdom.
It's hilarious that Serena ends up with an "Anne Rice freak" and Alex ends up with a blonde
My interpretation was that the guy is gay or just a friend, she wasn’t going to spend anymore time with Alex since he basically rejected her and wanted to hang out with the other guy instead

This show'll always have a special place in my heart. Whether it's new years eve, the middle of spring or just a gloomy sunday afternoon in November from time to time I'll play a random episode of Downtown to get me in a chill mood.

This just kinda feels really natural and it's kinda nice. I'm a teenager and this is pretty accurate to how a lot of the people I know are. Its kind of nice to have a show that's not an overdramatic representation of high school and being a teenager

+BlayzedBlue your right. What was wrong with MTV, these cartoons connect us more with reality and morality. I could understand that the network they care more about the money, but this was a really good cartoon. Art is better than money. And I'm pretty sure they would still get the money if they allowed this show to continue.

yeah, I don't like Alex for what he did to Serena (he's still a cool character though), only liked her for her look (or what fantasy/image he made up for her). Once he saw her without the goth look he wasn't interested, which what Jen said at the beginning of the show "oh no, not one of your goth girl fantasies" or something like that. But that's what I love about this show, realistic characters! There's definitely a lot of guys like Alex out there, glad Serena blew him off lol

Same. I like Alex but what he did was kinda messed up and I'm glad that Serena didn't end up with him. But like you, I'm happy they tackled that issue of perception vs reality. He had this image of what he thought Serena would be like because of her appearance only to find she wasn't like that. It really does bring realism into the show as you said. I'd like to think that if the show did get a season 2, maybe Alex would've finally tried to get to know her on a personal level.

I'm really sad downtown was cancelled because I feel like the grounds for character development was being laid down (if that makes sense). for example I really would've loved to see what happens to Alex and Jen cus they obviously have some tension, I would've loved to know goats backstory and why he's so paranoid sometimes, i wouldve liked seeing chaka mature etc etc. I just feel like this would've been such an incredible show if it wasn't cut short :(

even thought alex was a cool, but shallow and shitty character, it shows how realistic the world is. the main character isn’t always gonna be the good guy, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a well made character. i loved watching this series and i wish there was more.. maybe one day in the next year or so i’ll come back to this gem and binge watch it again.
This is why I don't quite get why people are so harsh on Jen. Yeah she's a jerk. But she's also honest and the reason why she's so blunt with Alex is because Alex doesn't listen.

I guess it is sad that most people fall in love with others for their looks and then start to lose interest when they get to know them but at the same time it's normal since most people are influenced by other's physical attractiveness, so i feel like you can't really blame them when it's human nature. Like for example Alex's type is goth so when he sees a goth girl he will probably immediatly get attracted to them and start to have feelings for them but if they had a bitchy personality and no similarites he'd probably lose interest in them which most people would relate to and that's okay. Also about the goth thingy like i don't know about you but i live in the uk and here if someone was dressed in a goth style they would probably get made fun of and get called things like "emo" and all that. Also sorry if this was really long lol.
But she literally said that there was nothing in it for Alex anymore when he literally said that he wasn't attracted to Serena anymore because she changed her look when as a woman she should've said no like goat did but instead she put Serena down and didn't tell at Alex for how he acted

Honestly I want to have sympathy for Alex as a character but from personal experience, having dudes treat you different for being goth is annoying, I don't blame Serena for switching it up on him just to test him.
I was really disappointed in Alex here he stopped liking her when dressed casually/comfy. I'm a bit crushed. It's kind though you try to sympathize with Alex...

There will never again be a show like this. I love how raw it is from the hand drawn animation to the dialogue and voice actors. Ugh it sucks it didn’t get to go on for another season, I’m always left wishing for more 😅
This show came out 17 years ago. It may have some weird stuff but it was cool. If they can bring back Beavis and Butt-head for a short time, then why not bring back this.

It ended because Alex moved on from his obsession, god laid, and ended up becoming a stud, thus ending the premise of the show.

i like to imagine a full, dynamic scenario of them progressing
chaka, mecca, matt, fruity graduate. matt prob goes to some art college in the city, chaka and fruity work, mecca takes a gap before education. they drift apart but always come back together, the adventures are continuous
jen learns to accept her femininity, her sexuality, and the way she lashes out in order to improve. she figures out what she wants to do with life and comes clean to alex ab her feelings
alex gets laid, he and jen could go either way tbh but he's in a consistent relationship. his apt is a hangout place for the gang and he gets an interview w a workplace he respects

it would be better if time just never passed and they never grew older and the show wouldn't focus too much on the characters themselves but more in making a comentary on relationships, society and people in general

Only just realised this was the last episode. Sad times. Nice that the show ended with a touching moment from Alex and Chaka though.
It pinpoints a wholesome relationship between siblings, where although they clash a lot, they still love and lookout for each other.
Thank you for putting this gem on youtube. Funny how the creators anticipated that in 20 years this show would be enjoyed as something so 90s. I bet they never expected it to be popular in 2024

My time with this show was so short lived (22hrs to be exact), but I had a fuckin' blast. I really loved the character dynamics in this show. It put me in good ol' state of self-reflection. I'm deeply grateful. Hopefully this can come back one day (like what they did with Clone High). I read in the comments that the voice actors for Chaka and Goat have sadly passed away. May they rest in power. Anyways, in the future I'll run it back multiple times to see if I can catch anything that I might've missed. I'm going to miss this show a lot. This show felt very grounded and human. My favorite characters were Alex and Jen. Wished we could've seen them all grow into their most authentic selves. Maybe in another lifetime. Peace.

Regardless of this show being cancelled, I want to thank whoever is behind this channel for showing us this masterpiece show and a glimpse of the 90’s. I’m not sure if you are still active on this account as you posted episodes few years ago but hats off to u for not letting this show be forgotten. It wudnt surprise me if this show was underrated in the 90’s but oh my who wud have thought decades later it would get the recognition it deserved! I honestly enjoyed every second of this series, and even though I’m sad that they never made any episodes I really hope they don’t plan to continue it today because they will ruin it with woke politics & modern day crap. i think what people don’t get is that in the end he realized he really did care for her as she was, goth or no goth as he said he wanted to be with her, but he was too late, he blew it. on the other hand i’m glad that experience allowed him to move on and out himself out there with other people
I'm so sad whenever I get to the end of this series. I watch it every few years and each time I get something new out of it.
Kinda wanted to leave my two cents on alex and serena. They both think they're losers, but they compensate in different ways. Serena puts on a goth costume and Alex doesn't really try.
Something interesting also happened in this episode. Serena took off her makeup and showed up to the copy place as she was and Alex was totally uninterested. Kinda revealed two things. First, when Alex said your clothes don't matter, he was lying. He cares very much about them. When he saw Serena without her goth look he was turned off, he loves the fantasy but when she showed him how she looks without makeup he was just like 'meh.'
Also when he was wasn't able to meet up with her because of Chaka's dumb crap, she totally blew him off and was kind of a jerk. He had a good reason, and it also says a lot about how emotionally immature she actually is. Alex is also the same in certain ways. Serena created a beautiful costume to hide behind and Alex is in love with that costume. But hey, none of them are actually evil or bad. They're just people with their own flaws. People says its like fun and games when you're in your 20's but its tough, lol, just ask Alex or Serena!

I love how she changes her style and he doesn't like her anymore. It just shows that yes "basic/mainstream girls" and "goth/edgy girls" care about their appearances as much as eachother. I feel like the alt scene always takes the piss out of mainstream girls saying stuff like "they're so vain, they only think surface deep" yet y'all put as much effort into appearances as one another.
Appearances mean jack shit. You can be religious and dress gothic, you can be pagan and dress "basic". You don't have to dress fashionable to have a cool and creative personality. Clothes are there to just cover us - they're not a big deal.
I love all kinds of fashion so I'm not tryna be a hyprocrite here - I love to dress up and wear makeup - but to only like someone based off of their fashion is totally BULLSHIT

I agree to an extent. Yet I’d argue that working hard to mimic the status quo vs working hard to defy it are different things.
The difference is in the philosophy. Goth started out as a criticism of mainstream trends and consumerism and had a huge DIY aspect and have their own music and literature scenes, though fake goths now dont really care about that, only the fashion. “Mainstream” girlies just been following trends and societal conventions forever with no commentary, so i can understand the vanity aspect of being dedicated (but not casually into, bc thats different) to those things (esp the way plastic surgery is now).
Personally i think one has more depth than the other, but at the end of the day, nobody can be judged by appearance. I love goth music and writing but im not into the fashion thing.
This show still gives me that vibe from growing up in the Rave/Golden hip hop era. We fuckin peaked yo. Today suuuuuucks. I'd trade my smartfone for a trip back no question.

i think what i love about this show is just how real it is. from the dialogue, to the delivery, i feel like these are things real people who are just hanging around might say and do.
but what i really love is how it handles complex life issues. with this episode, the dilemma doesn't feel forced like how a sitcom makes a character do something to upset someone else, but instead puts alex, who is a young 20-something into a situation that challenges his feelings. he then goes to his friends for advice and they support him to help him process how he really feels. what he did wasn't nice, but his reaction still makes sense and by the end he's grown to be a little better of a person even if he was too late

Just discovered this show. When it first aired I was only 10, barely missed the era where this was the reality for a lot of people. Just like Mission Hill, this is another piece of late 90s animation that really did strike on something special, and we're a little worse off for not having had more.

I’m so so sad that this is the last episode. I enjoyed every second of it, and I absolutely loved the animation and characters, there’s so much depth and the writing is genius and so accurate and not an overly dramatic portrayal of teens, its just perfect
Fun fact: this episode didn't air in the USA in the first season at all, not even in repeats. It showed up at like 4am unannounced at least a year later, so MTV could spread the production costs over another year for tax purposes, per the show's creator.

I could relate to Alex throughout the series, with the whole being into comics and wanting to be with this girl who was goth. The ending tore me up a bit since it reminds me of something that happened to me. This is a good show and it's sad that MTV cancelled it, it would've been interesting to see what a second season would've done.
Damn I wish we got a season 2. Wanted to see what happened between Alex and Serena.
I discovered the show yesterday and binge watched it all in a day. I really enjoy it, such a shame it got cancelled. I really resonate with the characters and I like that there aren’t any entirely “good” or “bad” characters as in other shows. All of them have both positive and negative qualities and that’s what makes them so relatable, even the ones that I personally have absolutely nothing in common with. This show is a true gem, hopefully it gets renewed in the future. HUGE thanks to whoever preserved the episodes, because I sure am gonna come back and watch them from time to time ❤

People in the comments seem surprised by Alex's behavior, like it wasn't apparent all along that his attraction to Serena was superficial and rooted in fantasy. He was into her before they ever even spoke. He's into her in the same way all his other geeky friends are. Of course, he's going to have a crisis upon realizing this. It's not disappoint that he finally realized it, but unfortunate that his feelings were superficial in the first place. Unfortunate, but understandable. I bet most people who are disappointed in him for this are guilty of romanticizing and idealizing superficial aspects of character. Everyone these days be wanting their "big tiddy goth girls."

Many people are saying that Alex doesn't deserve to be with Serena because the latter changed her style and the former didn't like it. But imo he did learn his lesson because of Goat's advice and accepted Serena despite the way she looks. So in all honesty I have some sympathy for Alex

I love Chaka's character and think she went through some development throughout the series. I also love the realness of this show. We can see that Chaka is the wildest character of the show. She is the most likely to wind up in crazy situations and she even can lack self awareness at times. Yet she is also the most fearless character of the show. She has street smarts and that New York hustle to get what she wants. I'd imagine her trip scare and hospitalization will force her to reassess the "life in the fast lane" she is living
