- How to Pitch Fry Scream or Sing Scream took me years to find out so in todays vocal tutorial I'll show you the tips and techniques I use. Screaming notes is very popular in many heavy genres like djent, thall, metalcore, deathcore and even pop. If you haven't seen my past 2 vocal lesson episodes, I'd recommend watching them first as I use some of the techniques from those past few videos. The song I'm using is from a past episode and also available to purchase a license from my store. So if you're a vocalist and looking for music to perform on, check the link down below! Thanks!
I'm Brendon Padjasek of the band Structures from Toronto, Canada and welcome to my channel based on modern metal, djent, and deathcore music, production, mixing and song writing.

Hey man ! I've been lookin like 20 tuto about screamin and yours helped me out to reach my goal. At least getting close to it and i'd like to thank you big time for this :D You're screaming style is awesome !
I've got a question tho : If you listen to your video, at 3:46 precisely, you get that 14 years old grit voice where i'm actually stuck. What do you think it is ? Puberty hitting again or just not enough compression / chest push ?
Pitching will be the next level !
Thanks again :)
@Seiji1400 that’s amazing I can’t tell you how happy that makes me to hear. I would say it’s likely not enough compression/ projection. Feel free to try to push it a bit more
@@BrendonKPadjasek Thanks for your fast answer, i'll try it out without passing out. Love from France
@Seiji1400 hahaha yeah definitely don’t pass out. Just push it the slightest bit more / close your throat the slightest bit
Dude thank you. Your videos reassured me that I'm practicing actual technique and not hurting myself unintentionally for a decade. Gonna have to practice those rear upper mouth shapes, I hadn't thought to try that!
Deeyumm.. I guess I understand why the first video “fry screaming” has a million more views than this one (and, honestly, that’s probably because a lot of people are coming in with literally ZERO knowledge of how to “scream”), but THIS video is where the rubber meets the road.. FUCK yea! Thanks, dude!! Appreciate you taking to time to really break it down (e.g. the whole “my facial muscles make *this* movement and then I do *this* with my uvula” thing 🤣 FUCKING AMAZING!).. really appreciate you showing us by example that the most important thing is to not be self conscious and to just FKN DO IT! You da man! Thanks again, bruv 💪🏻🙏🏻
Ehh I appreciate that a lot my man. I’m going to attempt to make another video that goes a bit deeper into the distortion side of things and a lot of people seem to be having trouble with my explanation, which is fair. Gotta find a better way to do so
Appreciate you watching and I’m very glad to have helped in some way!
Damn! Again, I think a lot of people are coming in cold af, they just listened to Linkin Park (lol), and are simply wanting to know “HOW TF” lol.. starting from ground zero, it really is a nightmare.. maybe try to focus on one thing you mentioned in this video which was “emulating your soft/whisper scream” and working up from that.. I think the whisper scream really gives a person a good idea of how their facial and muscular/throat structure should be shaped and how it should feel when they’re actually going for it.. if they can get that down and enjoy the way it sounds/feels, then it really just comes down to protecting the throat while adding volume.. which is basically what I came to you for (I was hurting myself lol), and you *really* do do a great job at breaking it down piecemeal and making it digestible.. thanks again, bruv 🙏🏻
This is priceless advice! I’ve been jamming structures’ latest stuff for months now, and I’ve fallen in love with your vocal style. It’s great to hear it “unprocessed” and know what to actually shoot for.
Oh thanks so much. Yeah this is what I sound like hahaha. I like when it’s not extremely over processed
@@BrendonKPadjasek Exactly, you sound very close to the record even a capella! I've been trying to emulate this sound for a while now, but it's tough to get my natural voice/true chords to come through. If you ever offered vocal lessons, I'd gladly sign up!
@Blacklight_Music thank you so much! I have been asked before but I’m not much of a lesson type of guy. Maybe in the future!
@@BrendonKPadjasek No problem at all! Totally get it. Anyways, back to binging Psycho Hours!
@Blacklight_Music lmao thank you! I love that song as well
Omg!! These techniques are fantastic!! Thanks for sharing this! I was crazy to learn it!
Thank you so much. Really glad it was helpful
Man like all your videos about fry screaming and screaming are just liquid gold budd. The uvula awareness gonna be a game changer for me. And push air from the back too . Can wait to get in the practice and scare the shit out of my neighbours. Will let you know in a couple of days once i feel safe to screaam. Huge thanks brotha 👹🙌🏽
I'm very stoked to hear that! Like I said it took years of toying around to find the right technique for me. Glad to share that bits that I know
thanks for watching!
i understand it all, but it's currently midnight so i'll test it out and see how i do. exact video i needed, thank you
Eh I’m so glad to hear that. Working on finishing up a new one today
What the fuck.
This is 🔥 lol.
Try explaining this phenomenon to the homies and they trip out...
Know I have this to send.😂
haha thank you so much for watching! What was the biggest take away in this video for you?
Yusssss been NEEDING this video since your tease of it!! Heavy
Thank you. I look forward to hearing your progress :)
I just saw this video pop up in my feed. I've been looking for scream tutorials for ages and almost all of them want you to buy a course or Aren't helpful at all. I went back and watched the first two videos and am now watching this one. These are great, informative, straight to the point and really helpful.
I’m super stoked to hear these are helpful. There are definitely a lot of courses out there haha. I like to share what helped get me to the point my vocals and music writing abilities are at.
What are you struggling with most at this point ?
@Brendon K Padjasek mainly projection and avoiding using my throat. The first video helped a lot with projection.
@@keiskay Ahh I'm glad to hear that. Yeah you should feel the slight rumbling in your chest area as that's where the distortion is coming from. As well as initiating the Uvula.
What type of vocals are you trying to perform?
Thanks for your fry tutorials, I finally understand what it implies 👍
There’s definitely debate over what this style of screaming is so I can’t 100% be sure it’s fry screaming , as that’s what the majority of people called it. All that matters is if you like the tone or not
@@BrendonKPadjasek It helps me add some growl to my voice, that's good.
@blackisblack22 that’s amazing. Very glad to hear that!
@@BrendonKPadjasek Is your screaming technique similar to what Marcus Bridge does? By the way the duo vocal combo of you two is absolute perfection. It's a big part of why I love Alien so much (especially Paradigm)
@EidasMusic awe thank you so much! I’m not exactly sure what Marcus does tbh but I love it haha.
FYI your uvula is the dangly thing at the back of your throat which has no effect on your voice. Your soft pallete is the part you can actually move and control
Yes someone else pointed that out. My bad.
Your technique sounds sick and you do an amazing job of explaining it! Definitely going to think of the uvula more when I do mine. You have THE best diagrams I’ve seen in a tutorial too- keeping them dynamic and showing where to feel things AS it’s happening rather than a static image. Super excited to work on my technique with this at the next opportunity!
Thanks a lot Parker! Yeah I figured putting in that extra minute or 2 of editing goes a long way to show what’s actually going on. Thanks for checking out the channel!
@@BrendonKPadjasek absolutely bro! Just followed your instagram pages and checked Structures out too. Love it and how genuine you are! Keep doing what you’re doing, I’m looking forward to seeing your channel grow even more 🫶
@ParkerBourassa I appreciate that a lot. I just try to give everyone interested insight into what took years of learning. Hopefully some shortcuts
I think I got it, tysm!!
Ehh I’m stoked to hear that! Thanks for checking it out!
awesome man, great video, great explanation. Just beginning the journey of screaming purely out of curiosity, don't even have a band to perform it in. Your explanation resonates with me a lot, in this video and in the previous screaming tutorial because I feel it exactly as you describe it anatomy-wise - like in the back or top of my mouth with how you say the uvula. funny enough the first video I heard this in. So thanks for your work and research! Just one thing: stop the self-hating, and all the negativity towards yourself. You are great and I hope you'll start describing yourself as that soon. The inner critic can eat you up on the longterm, if you don't stop it on some point. just my two cents from my journey so far
Ehh thank you so much. I appreciate the kind words and I definitely have self deprecating humour. I like my voice a lot of the times but at certain times I don’t but I just turn it into some sort of humour instead of actually dislike
Thanks!
Wow man! This video really resonated with me actually. I used to sing years ago and love it, but always avoided harsh vocals and screams - I knew that I was doing it wrong and causing damage, so never pursued it much and focused on just singing. Now I'm getting back into vocals and want to start learning new techniques.
Also, I often talk about motivation and it's actually a huge interest of mine. You nailed it on looking back after a month or year of progress to really see what's going on with self improvement. Instead of comparing ourselves too much to others, if we compare ourselves to where we were before - we can get motivated and feel good about our progress.
Great work!!!
Thanks So much! And absolutely. I tried to cover both the technique side of things and the personal side as it can be extremely discouraging. Good luck on the journey and if you have any other questions lmk!
@@BrendonKPadjasek Right on! After watching one video, I had to subscribe to your channel. Keep it up!🎶🎶🎶
@centurybeta2112 thank you so much for I feel bad for not making a vocal video for a while. A lot of interest is coming in so I must find some more topics to cover. Do you have any?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I have a lot of ideas! Learning motivation (and overcoming plateaus) is my focus over several topics and I'm now getting back into singing because of other interests that led me back to it. Though I'm initially focusing on clean vocals and going over things I learned years ago, I want to start learning the harsh side of things (besides just adding grit) and begin that learning journey. Also, I'm not sure about how it is going from clean to harsh. I've been hearing that in a lot of new bands that I'm listening to and don't know if there's a special technique.
@centurybeta2112 that’s a very good question. I’ve never had to worry about clean vocals as I never did them in a band but I can’t imagine what would go into that
Stop saying you suck at singing you’re good bro
Hahaha thanks man. I do appreciate that
thanks bro
Thanks for watching!
Excellent !! Possible to translate For french people 😅?!
Haha I wishhh. Is there no option on UA-cam ?
I can't fry but I'm getting better. I can do the low squeals though😅
Haha sick! I can’t do those
Hi Brendon
When you do your "clean voice into scream"-technique: are you starting from chest, mix or head voice?
When I go go all out yelling and screaming (squeezing my abs) I end up going hoarse.
Seeing as your technique doesn't include any pointers on throat feeling/sensations, it's difficult for me to "break out of my muscle memory" which I think automatically kicks in with my vocal folds.
Not sure if that makes sense but I seriously long to be able to scream🥲
PS. I very much agree with your take on the emotionality of "your" vocal style as compared to death metal, although some chunky false chord lows are delectable. It seems like the technique you use can be dialed back for gritty rock vocals a la Foo Fighters and Silversun Pickups.. even more reason why I wanna learn 🥲🥲
Hey thanks for checking the other videos out as well!
I start from chest voice and lead up into my head voice where the voice tends to break, but doing so in an intentional way. So going slowly, and trying to hit that point where you'd normally go falsetto, or belting. That's the area my fry screams typically sit in. And then, lowering the Adam's Apple for lows.
I definitely want to start incorporating a false chord scream as well. Although they're not my favourite for listening to an entire song, there's absolutely no harm in learning a new technique. It would just make me better.
As for singing, when I was singing a lot more I 100% used this technique for those Silversun vibe vocals. But dialed back a bit
Hopefully that clarified things a bit
@@BrendonKPadjasek It did, thanks, although that specific place where the voice automatically starts distorting (without frying the throat) still seems a little elusive to my.
It seems similar to Chris Liepe's technique of compressing your vocal break?
Heading to a rehearsel space tonight to play around with it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yeah it is a quite difficult spot to recreate. It’s almost like making an extra push with your chest. And create call going to a rehearsal spot to practice. That’s a great idea for those who don’t feel comfortable practicing at home
mr duplantier my beloved
One of my favourite vocalists of all time.
Do you do vocals?
@@BrendonKPadjasek yes i do indeed!
Awesome. Which style do you scream in?
@@BrendonKPadjasek false chord, but ive been trying to learn how to fry
@@jag-stang29 haha that's funny, I'm beginning to learn false chord
I’m certain your clean singing will get better, but surely you don’t suck! Your screaming is awesome anyway. A lot of clean singers can’t do what you do, right? 😄
Thank you ! It’s all just about putting in the time and hours and I just don’t put the time into singing among the large amount of hobbies I have lol
i have to drink tea or water like 2-3 times a song when im growling. is that a sign of soemthing im doing wrong? i feel like the growl evaporates my saliva from my throat lol. great video thank you for posting!
I also find I drink more tea and water when I’m tracking vocals than any other time I’m alive haha. Thank you!
I’d say the only real sign doing damage is if it hurts. I think running out or salivation is relatively normal but may also be a sign you’re going a little too hard
I just can’t figure out how to do that without using my throat
What are you using your throat for while screaming?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I know I’m not supposed to but it’s just a natural instinct
@PrisonMike-_- I use my throat as well but not to scream from. I only use it to compress and constrict the air slightly. When I say “don’t use your throat” it’s because many people’s instinct is to scream from the throat, instead of shaping the air with it
@@BrendonKPadjasek I appreciate the response. I’m keeping at it but man I’m having a hard time training my mind not to let the throat be the origin of the scream. Every time I try the fry method I can’t seem to generate the noise from my chest/diaphragm area like you teach but I trust that it takes patience
@PrisonMike-_- it definitely takes patience. What happens when you try the technique from my other videos of starting from your low note, pushing the singing to a higher note until the voice breaks and becomes a scream?
I can scream low with false chord, but I can't scream that high.... My throat hurts, so I make a mistake.... I really can't understand how you do it
Interesting, What parts of your body are you using for the false chord?
@@BrendonKPadjasekthanx for the answer!I use the abs and mouth muscles. Classic blergh
Demotivating 😅 which is the opposite of this video ❤
Haha I’m glad to help. Thank you so much for checking it out. If you have any other questions, ask away!
For some reason I always feel like im using my throat when trying to scream, no matter what I try
Are you trying more fry or false chord screams ?
@@BrendonKPadjasek fry screams, I've been trying for years, even with a vocal coach once but nothing helps
@@mauroxhcx hmm, where else do you find the screams coming from?
@@BrendonKPadjasek literally only throat, its so frustrating
Hmm have you tried using the projecting technique but stopping before adding distortion?
