Just wanted to say that your idea of using extra fine steel wool is right on. I ran an antique furniture and wood refinishing shop for years and found that steel wool gave the best results over sandpaper or emery cloth. Great tip that I haven't seen any other DIY channels suggest. Cheers.

Thanks for showing us this. I'm amazed that the ink jet print didn't smudge when the varnish was applied so I'm eager to try your method. Usually, the tutorials say to use a laser print. I was too busy watching and enjoying your tutorial to notice your nail polish or absence of.

Sorry if I have missed something obvious, but I'm just not clear on this one point. After you have painted, dried and sanded your plaque, you move on to applying three layers of varnish. Please can you clarify whether these have to dry individually, ie varnish - dry - varnish - dry - varnish - be sure to dry completely before moving on to actually applying the picture OR do you simply brush the plaque three times with a coat of varnish, one on top of the other, to make a thick layer before leaving it to dry thoroughly? All your techniques are beautifully demonstrated, so I'm sure it's just me being a bit dim. Thanks for your hard work.
I just came across your channel and I’m definitely going to try your method!!! I tried different methods from different UA-cam channels but none of them were successful as they peeled off and the ink went off as well!! Thank you for sharing :)
Interesting method! I'm planning to transfer an image on a wood block for the purpose of relief printing and I will anyway put a shellac varnish on the wood to prevent the carving surface from chipping from wrong places. I wonder if shellac will catch the image similarly as the varnish you used. I'll try to remember to report back here how it went if anybody else wonders the same question.

Hi Iveta! You must be using a photo paper that has a paper backing. The glossy photo paper I got was for my HP inkjet printer but has a plasticky backside with light HP initials stenciled all over it. I used your method but for some reason I didn't realize the backside was different till the next day (I let dry overnight), and so of course after I sprayed with water, I then realized it was never rubbing off lol. Somehow though I was able to salvage this project- just trying to remember the steps I used- I know I allowed the water to sit on the back of it for some time. Then I rubbed dry and sandpapered the sides off. Then I just varnished over it again and again and dried multiple times in between- maybe I ended up melting off the backside somehow? I'll have to do it again to know for sure but the image looks great now-I'll send you a pic when it is finished-did some clay work around it ala Iveta haha!

Lovely picture, thank you for sharing, its very useful instruction. If you are in UK try maybe Polyvine decorators varnish and Polyvine heavy duty wood varnish. Works like charm, also makes backup transparent and id waterproofing and uv and heat resistant. This company is UK brand, easy to buy online at The Brewers. I was using Wilko varnish but I am more happy with Polyvine

One of my patients looked my hands, and said she could tell I was a hard worker. She was an Eastern European immigrant that was also hard working. I took it as one of my favourite compliments.
Haha well that explains why my hands are always like that then, must be coz I’m an Eastern European immigrant myself 😄 I don’t think many hard workers manage to keep their hands and nails looking glamorous, we have other things to worry about! 🌸😘

Strange for some to comment. All serious crafters have either broken damaged nails of their own or pay for fake acrylics. I just crazy glued a huge tear in my nail until it grows out past the torn quick! I’m also curious that the ink jet printer worked. So you need to use gloss paper for the ink jet? Saw someone actually iron the photo onto the top coat, it slightly melted it in. Sort of a similar process as it’s working with the wet (melting) layer of the top coat. I think some are thinking its the old style decoupage from decades ago because of using top coat or varnish. Back then you just varnished the pic to the wood. We weren’t doing photo transfer as far as I saw and I’m old, so like one said using magazines images didnt work. It all smeared.
Haha I guess some people just need things to be annoyed about! 😄 I usually use gloss, matte should work just fine too but I stick to gloss coz I know that it works 😄

You can use brown paper bag or Kraft paper instead of steel wool. It’s a lot cleaner and smooths out paint and varnish to a satiny surface with no clean up

Absolutely, chalk and acrylic paint are pretty much interchangeable

Great tutorial, so does this work with inkjet printers? Most tutorials say laser print only which is why I’ve not tried this before. If I can use inkjet that is so great x
I used my inkjet printer to print out the image I used in this video. The trick is to use photo paper
You said that you can use this process for transferring a photo, does it work for photos that have been printed at a photo kiosk or do you have to print the photo from your printer? Also, do you have any tips for using other paper products, such as an out of date calendar or a magazine? I’ve been wanting to use several old calendars and transfer them onto a pour painted canvas for wall decorations for my daughters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

yes, I used the same varnish on the image as I did on the wooden base. You could use a special transfer medium, most big craft stores will do some kind of transfer gel or something :)
A little late to the party on this. I think it’s great. I’ve tried this method and my image, when transferred, looks matte and after final gloss still looks dull. Any thoughts?

Can you tell me what kind of glossy photo paper you used? My first attempt the glossy photo paper seem to be coated and thick and I could not get it to come of with water, vinegar, sulfamic acid, goo gone. Nothing worked. Your paper seemed thin.

This looks beautiful! I am always in awe of the process and the result that it leads to. Have you done any of these as decorative wall plaques without the key knobs as well? They would look so nice. I am quite upset that I cannot order any from you due to shipping, lol!
The fact that it is a picture made me wonder if it would be an option to offer this as a personalized item with people's own pictures of their family or whatever picture they've taken. They could send you the picture they would like to have on whatever surface you offer like a plaque or any of the products that would be appropriate. Or even something like the heart ornaments to go on the Christmas tree but with kid or family pictures. I've seen people who put pictures of their kids into ornaments to go on on the tree.
I've thought since I came across you on the other channel that you truly have the nicest voice to listen to.
Thank you lovely 😊 I know, the postage can be silly expensive but to be honest smaller items like this one shouldn’t be too bad or little hearts or coasters for example I know I sent coasters to USA not long ago and it cost me around £6 so it’s not an insanely huge price I think Canada should be the same so if you think you would like something smaller / lighter I could definitely look in to it for you. And of course for you any personalisation and anything else you might want 😄
About the personalised things with peoples photos - to be honest I thought about that but It really doesn’t appeal to me all that much I am very selfish and enjoy having the creative freedom however maybe I really should start doing something like that - that would be more likely to make me some money 😄

Your work is amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I was just wondering will water based satin varnish will work the same way because that's what I have right now.
I prefer gloss over satin or matt for this because of the mattifying element in varnish, it might dull the colours down a little but it will still work so if that's all you have at the moment, it'll do! :)

I find that matte varnish fills down the colours, I sand it down till it’s matte because we need the surface to be as smooth as possible and with gloss varnish that’s one way to know that you’ve got all the areas 😊
Hello Iveta, I noticed that first you apply varnish to the image, then to the surface it is going on, and then again quickly onto the image. When you do the second coat of varnish on the image, is it still wet enough to so that the first and the second coat flow rather than become gooey? Thank you.
Usually it’ll flow for the most part, that’s why it’s important to work really fast when doing that step and if you’re doing a large image, use a larger brush and so on. It will help varnish stay a little bit more flowy. Also if you have a larger surface that needs covering you might find thicker coat works better as it will take longer to dry. And again, it will depend on the brand of varnish, if yours is more watery (like the one I use) it will be easier to do it. If your varnish is a little bit thicker (I once bought a small pot of Johnstones varnish and it was too thick) it will dry quicker. So again, not an exact science, you kind of have to dive in to it to know things for sure 😄 hope this helps x

MDF, I bought mine on ebay from someone that cuts wood. I wouldn't know about the golf image, sorry :)

I love your videos, and the plaques and coasters etc. that you make are just beautiful. I want to ask you something : I've printed off a heart mosaic pattern from my inkjet printer and I want to transfer the pattern on to a piece of wood so I can do the mosaic on the wood. The pattern is just a simple black outline. Can you suggest an easy way to transfer it - I'm a total newbie to this. Thank you, love from Amanda in Australia. :-)
You might be able to use mod podge for this, I’ve definitely heard of people using it for transferring but I personally haven’t. You should be ok to transfer a black outline on to wood ☺️ there are also specific mediums called transfer medium made for this, again, I have very limited experience with those. So far gloss varnish method shown in this video has worked the best, at least in my experience
How would best to transfer design, photo, napkins etc, to slate coasters? Would this be the same process?

Yes, you can definitely do this with a photo, all I’m using here is photo paper, so technically it’s not much different from a photo developed in a professional way. I would advise to make a copy of that photo before you start tho, you never know if something might go wrong so I’d advise staying on the safe side ☺️

thank you, I varnish the MDF, then sand down and then when I go to transfer it i varnish the paper, then mdf then paper again as fast as I can before the varnish starts to set hope this makes sense

I painted it with acrylic white paint but if you mean for transferring - I used gloss water based varnish

yep, just a photo printed on photo paper and i apply varnish directly on to it :) and yes, I always use water based varnish unless I'm using my Fineline crackle Varnish (it has to be sealed with solvent based)
