- You guys asked for it, so here it is! Here's how to swap the mag release button on your Glock Pistols. If you haven't seen my first video about the Shield Arms S15 (15 round magazine for Glock 43X/48) check it out here: • Testing Shield Arms Gl...
I swapped to this aftermarket Mag Catch from Shield Arms so that I could get the best performance with my Shield Arms S15 Magazines.
Give me a like and leave a comment if you have other questions or ideas! I put out videos every Saturday morning!
*UPDATE May 4, 2021*
Out of 350 rounds through a single mag, I have had 1 FTF (failure to feed). The gun and mag were a little dirty, and I am continuing to test.
*UPDATE Sept. 5, 2021*
I have now shot over 1000 rounds between 2 shield arms magazines (first gen and second gen). Only 2 FTF’s which in my humble opinion is GREAT! Keep your gun clean and lubed and you will have no issues.
The first generation of Shield arms magazines will not work if you install you mag catch in the left handed configuration.

Out of 350 rounds through a single mag, I have had 1 FTF (failure to feed). The gun and mag were a little dirty, and I am continuing to test them. I will continue posting updates periodically. Additionally, shield arms mags will not work if you install the mag catch in a left hand configuration.
Revision 2 of the SA15 should have both left and right ejection cut outs to allow for ambidextrous use, I think the original only had the mag release slot on one side.
Also my revision 2 SA15 can be wiggled a bit and removed from the firearm without pushing the mag release with the stock Glock polymer mag release still in the pistol. I haven't changed the release as yet, I am still waiting on replacement glasses before I can see to do so.
@@Dang_Near_Fed_Up you’re correct
Just bought a 43X, had the Shield Arms mag catch installed in a left handed release mode, and it works fine. But as you said, with a Shield 15 rd mag. Good idea to keep the OEM 10 round as a back up, secondary reload.

@@aureliusjacob4019 Heißt der Schnapper auch die Klinke? Ich bin ein Ami und habe das Wort ,Schnapper' nicht gewusst.
This was the best explanation on UA-cam hands down.
Pick tool from Walmart
Bought the mags and the catch from a local store in town
Literally used the pick tool and needle noses and popped it out in less than 10 seconds.
Used a flashlight under the handle to see inside the whole time.
Total installation was like 5 minutes.
Thank you for the information!
Thank you very much for your kind words.
And I'm here chewing through my gun for hours fml
Loved the way you demonstrate the whole process, just got my 43x added today to the Glock family.
Thanks.
Update: I finally got my S15 magazines and shield arms mag release today! I ordered back in March but got caught up in the wait for gen 2, I’m rewatching so I can swap out the mag release. Thanks again for the video man!
Any time!
Every video on UA-cam talks about the need for the metal mag, obviously we are here to change it. The laggy part is helpful.
Dude this is the best install video on this around. Very nice!!
Thanks!!
Just my two cents, I've changed a lot of mag releases on Gen 5 Glocks...good install but you really don't need to take the tension rod out. Once it is out of the notch a little bit of tension towards the butt and the mag catch will slide out. Two different ways to skin a cat I guess!
That’s what someone else said. I’ll have to give it a shot 👍
Just changed mine out and can vouch that this way works as well, thanks for the tips! 👍
When reinstalling, push the tension rod into place with needle nose pliers (re seat), and your index finger should be enough to push it back over into place into the notch on the mag release. Unless you have gorilla fingers.
Nice, I’m going to do that this next weekend thanks for the heads up
As long as the cat is skinned I guess 😂😂😂
Good video. I always appreciate people taking the time to do these instructional videos.
That said, I did not have to take the steel tension rod out. I just left it in and with a little pressure from the pick keep the tension rod out of the way so that the new mag release could slide right in.
Thank you for this video. I have never done any "work" on my Glock 43x other than installing a Holosun 407K green dot sight. Needless to say I was hesitant to exchange the mag catch myself. However, after watching your video, I felt confident that I could do it, and I did! Can't thank you enough for your clear instructions. I'm a new subscriber now!
Thanks for the feedback! I’ve been off the platform for a few months since I just moved my family for work, but hopefully more videos will come once life calms down a bit. Comments like yours keep me excited to make more videos.
After using your green dot sight for a while, how to do you like it and how does it compare to just using the sights? Would you buy the green or red dot if making the decision now?
Picked up my 43x and 48 today. Shield arms mag releases and S 15 mags came yesterday. This is the best install video I've seen yet. Thanks!
I’ve had great experience with them. Train hard brother!
i appreciate you being thorough with the tutorial. i’m brand new to owning a pistol and this was still an easy to follow video. thank you
For real bro you have the best video on this. I laughed you keep saying your worried about the lighting but I assure you after watching a few videos on this you are the only one I have seen were I can actually see what your doing in there. So thank you
Just want to pop in and say thanks. I already have changed a glock mag release before, but the technique you showed holding it fully depressed and then basically holding and lifting with the pick is a million times easier than trying to use a small flathead to both move and lift, like I've and others have done before.
No need to remove the pin. Replaced in 2 minutes. Thanks for the video!
Great information I just got two 43x and back ordered some shield arms mags was hesitant because I’ve never installed a magazine catch but your video simplified it for me thanks!
Glad it helped!
I scratched up the inside of the damn magwell trying to pull out the magazine release pin! 😑 however I did get it it done with the same tools you’re using.
I was able to get it a lot easier by using my oscillating multi tool and cutting the grip off completely. I was able to change it but now I can’t get the handle back on
The double take was strong for me on this comment
Gorrila glue and cover the seam with Talon grip tape. Good as new!!! I mean... Its a glock right?
#Perfection
Lol yea I had hell of a time getting mine out I scratched the crap out of the inside of the mag well but I got it done lol
Why do you need a grip ? Use your teeth. Worked for John Wick.
@@sleekfast11 i only have one tooth, would mess up my grip
I came to UA-cam for a tutorial video on this exact subject and your video was just what I needed! Thanks for the great content!!
Thanks for the great feedback!
thank you for the video. I just received my new mag and will be able to get this done. Appreciate it!
Thank you for the tip using a pick, using a flat blade screwdriver couldn’t getting it to save my life, using my pick three minutes later removed and replaced, did it because I purchased Glocks GXS frame from the Glock store, so I wanted to make sure I could do it.
Great video! 43X with Shield Arms mags is a true game changer.
Thanks bro! Train hard!
The first mag releases from Shield arms actually were aluminum, but there was a slight design change in the mag release notches in the latest mags, and the newer releases were changed to steel.
Dude that was a great video, I’ve had my shield arms mag for like 3 months wanting to install just a little nervous as it’s my first firearm. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, it explains the process well so I can make sure not to mar or damage the Glock. The tools needed portion makes this worth watching.
Thanks, helped a bunch. I left the tension rod in and just used a pick to move it outta the way for removal and insertion, but you supplied the fundamentals. Thanks again!
Yeah you don’t need to remove it. Happy shooting!
30 minutes later I realize that I have to push back on the off side. Duh. Great video.
I bought the Shield Arms magazine release but then went back to the factory polymer release. I figured it's better to wear out and replace a $6 polymer mag catch than my $40 polymer Glock mags.
now that's a good point. I would have taken a while for me to realize that
The picks are a game changer. Thanks for the tips! Easy 3 minute job.
Hey man! I just bought 2 mags, the mag release, and the magwell. Was worried about putting it in, but you made it look easy!!! Should get my stuff soon, and will be using your video as a guide. Feel like I was watching a buddy show me how to do it.... so thanks!!! The youtube world needs more guys like you in it... keep up the awesome work!!!
Thanks brother! I haven’t been posting for a while since I just moved states but encouragement like this is definitely inspiration to get back at it. Thank you for your kind words and train hard!!
You don’t need to take the spring out. Instead, when you’re installing the new mag release, come in through the opposite side with a straight pick and hold the spring up when you slide the new release in. Then take your 90 degree pick and put the spring back in the notch. Super easy. Whole thing took two minutes.
This saved me so many time fromd watching other videos!!! Thanks man!!!
I'm wondering how quickly and how severely the SA magazines actually damage Glock factory polymer magazine releases, and whether it might be better to buy a small supply of the factory releases to replace them after they get too damaged. Then you would still have plenty of ejection power for your factory magazines.
Great how-to video. Well done. Good step-by-step. Simple and straight to the point. Good close-up camera coverage. No loud, annoying background music. Glad to have found your channel.
Craftsman sells a $35 25-piece set of flathead and phillips screwdrivers that includes 4 hooks/picks.
For light while doing this kind of work, I clip a clip-on flashlight to the bill of my cap.
Thanks brother. The light is a great idea
The OEM polymer mag release doesn’t give any extra power to releasing factory mags. The dimensions are just wider to allow factory mags to drop freely under their own weight, even empty. It’s a friction problem once you install the metal one. I’m thinking about sanding the drag mark on my factory mag in hopes of getting just enough clearance for it to drop freely with the metal catch. The S15s work fantastic with the new catch.
Thanks! It was a breeze changing it with your video. 👍🙂
Very good video. Out with the old and in with the new, very easy! Thank you!
Thanks for posting. I had the release fall out of my Taurus G3c after a failure to feed issue with JHP round. So I was looking around to see how the Glock is made. Seems to be the same to me. And, I was wearing head phones as I watched this video. First time your sweetie said "OK" in my left ear, I spun around to see if my wife had snuck up from behind! :)
Hahaha apparently we recorded in surround sound 😂
Thank you.
And thank you UA-cam for allowing this.
( I’m being thankful and respectful, I’m not being a slave. )
Excellent video and you did a great job with the close ups with the camera.
Excellent video. Waiting for my lower to come in, and this is the first modification I’m going to attempt.
You actually have the updated mag release. I have the first generation mag release that is made out of aluminum. However, since their magazines are made of steel it can and will wear down the aluminum mag release since the aluminum is the softer metal. I can tell that mine has worn down some from carrying it pretty often and I have the new steel mag release on the way.
Nice video that makes it very clear how to swap the mag release. Well done.
Very well done and informative video...thanks for sharing. I bought a G48 yesterday. Ordered two S15 mags and the metal mag release which were shipped today. - New Subscriber
Thanks brother!
Justin gaethje starting making you tube vids. Thanks man it did help me change my mag release.
Well explained. No wasting time. Thank you
Thanks for the video brother I tried with the flat head screwdriver and marred the hell out of the polymer inside and gave up…definitely gonna run to harbor freight and grab a pick tool set. Thanks again!
Thanks for this wonderful video, I finished the first glock work on my first glock in 5 minutes :) thanks both you and your partner.
Excellent video, I need to change mine and you have shown how easy it is. Thanks!
Good video. Stubborn and cheap me thinking pick tools are for dentists decided to make a pick tool out of cut up wire hanger - I fashioned the hooked ending (3-5mins) and followed along with your instruction - success🎉 p.s. “pick tool” will be on my radar now though. Don’t look to be too expensive 😊
Thank you for your help I'd advise anyone doing this to buy a pick set and a needle nose pair of pliers from your local hardware store makes it 100 times easier.
Absolutely awesome video!! Great detail and very specific explanations about every step! Thank you! I’m now a subscriber.
Thanks brother!
Excellent instructions for the 1st timer! Best regards
Thank you. Great video. I know many people want & need this for the Shield mags to function properly. I have a 19 gen3 and a 26 gen 4 . I feel like I would be doubling up. In the event I knew the 43x was comming to light, sure, I would have waited. I do not want to loose money on what I have & upgraded. It seems selling is a loosing deal. Fincailly speaking..Good luck with your new enhancement.
Good video didn't know it was that easy i actually have the right tools to change out the mag catch or release!
Thank you sir. Good luck and train hard!
I'm thinking Shield is probably taking us for a ride 🤣🤣 Maybe they've been watching Google and liked the Idea.
Thanks for showing how to change out release.
My pleasure brother. Thank you for the kind words.
Good video I just got one and haven’t installed it yet but this definitely helped thanks 👍
I want to see that Shield Arms magazine drop when it's empty, because that's when you're going to be dropping it.
Gen 2s drop while empty , even with glocks factory mag release.
Mine drop out empty... I do have to pull the Glock 43X mags even empty
Much better instruction video than the one from Shield Arms. I like the tip to get pick tools from Harbor Freight.
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the video just ordered my s15 and mag release yesterday
Great content, and good to know that the original glock mags drag. This is a must for shield mag users, especially those carrying the +5. I can't reliably seat those mags with the polymer catch.
That covers something I didn't think about in my post here, that the SA mags might not seat reliably with the polymer catch. Thanks for mentioning.
Thanks so much for this video. I actually had to do the reverse and reinstall my factory mag release because I keep having ftf issues with the Shield Arms magazine.
I reinstalled mine as well. Not too many malfunctions, but 10 rds is a lot lighter than 15
Good explanation about the spring.
Thanks Steve. Cranky but not retired yet. I’m jealous!
Great job Dave! Very detailed and well explained 👍
Awesome tutorial and DIY presentation!
Great tutorial. Very clear and concise. I'm ordering my shield arms mag and release right now 👍
I’m a little late to this party but I just installed the metal mag catch on my 43X and quickly discovered the factory mags stick now. I can see a visible line drag mark where the corner of the new mag catch is dragging too hard on it. I saw you addressed this at the start of the video and was glad to see it wasn’t just me. Has anyone tried sanding their factory mag down just on that fine line till it will drop? A very small area is an affected and seems like it could be remedied fairly easily on the factory mags.
Great video! Thank you for the tutorial brother! I’ll be ordering the same thing in a few days!
I've been very happy with mine. And my mags. I think Shield Arms products are kind of niche, but very effective and versatile. Their swiveling butt stock AR-15s seem like a very quality product, too.
Agreed. I just swapped back to factory, but simply to make the gun a bit lighter. Been having some unrelated back issues and a lighter gun is better than no gun. That being said, I think I had maybe 3 malfunctions out of the 2000 rounds I ran through them while testing.
Thanks for a well put together informative upload!!!
Thanks Dude !! Every video I watched sucked , The release of the mag release once tension on the rod is the trick !!
Great video! Close ups were well done.
Thanks brother
Well explained and good lighting thanks 🙏
Excellent instructional video, thankyou for taking the time to make this.
Thank you for the feedback!
Wasn’t really that hard to see great help!!
Thanks, that's a very detailed demo!!
Thanks for the feedback!
Hell yea!! Thanks a lot man for doing a great step by step, I have two mags and the replacement mag release on order right now, just waiting for them to come in. Awesome vid!!
You are welcome 👍 Always open to new video ideas. Thanks for the request!
Thank you so much! Very usefull and detailed.
I actually found a titanium mag release on ebay that works with both S15 and Glock mags! Now both types of mags drop freely.
So if you’re a dentist you dont have to take the trip to Home Depot for tools, gotcha
Great video. Lighting was fine.
Thanks for the great video, easy to follow along. Extremely easy install.
Where do you buy those picks it seems its a must tool for this job
Got mine from harbor freight 👍
@@chooselegend4744 Thank you for fast response Tried other tools such as screwdriver no aval, right tool for the right job like they say. Awesome video very clear spoken and good explanation.
Thanks bro. Very informative!
Get the hvye release works perfect with both.I have both the sheild release will not be trusted for any stock mags.Dope video
Solid video, my man!
Great video,I believe I could do it after. watching you
Can opener tool on a leather man works just dandy for this.
no need to remove the spring, just push it forward as you install the new catch.
Thanks for the great video! Subscribed!
Done in 30 seconds. Thank you
Great video brother👊, much appreciated
Excellent video, thanks!
Thank you very much. This video is going to save me 30 minutes of cursing at my cat.
Awesome video! Thanks man!!!
Excellent tutorial!
Good job my guy you help me a lot 👍🏾
The picks are most definitely the easiest way to popping out the rod spring. I tried a flat head and not luck. But the pick was quick
Thank you Justin Gaethje for the quality video!
My shield mag release sat flush so I changed it out for the hyve ext mag release.
Excellent demo.
Thanks!
Excellent video!
