Such a versatile IC which can be used in many configurations
Another IC worth checking out for an LED chaser would be an LM3914 which can drive 10 LEDs.
An AT tiny would be another cheap option but does require some coding of course.

If you have a chance, please don't cross wires, the plastic coating melts when soldering and eventually a short circuit happens. For the jumper wire that goes from pin 4 to pin 8 of the 555, it is much more neat putting the wire over the components side of the veroboard, just below the IC or the DIP socket, and you can put it through the same holes than pins 4 and 8, so when you fit the socket in place, it gets tight then you can safe solder the socket and the jumper at the same time.
And, please, tin and clean the tip of the soldering iron from time to time, it will last forever.

This idea came to my mind before there are some difficulties
1. If I commect a wire before soldering the socket(8pin) then dome people wouldn't understand clearly as all can see now.
2. 2nd reason is filming...

Great project. My only concern is using tree pruners to trim the leads. A good pair of flush cutters isn’t much money.
Also, a variable resistor (even a trimmer pot) should be used instead of capacitor substitution.

You could probably use 2 low voltage realys on the output in place of the LEDS possibly Reed relays. You may have to add a diode in series with the relay coil so it will shut off when the output goes from (1) to (0) just in case the relay still both stay in the on position.

You can also use power transistors like MOSFETS for running more load!!

Make use of a potentiometer between pins 6 and 7 so that you can just vary the duty cycle (ratio of on time to off time) you can get a much better duty cycle by connecting a diode in parallel with the potentiometer. Basically it'll change speed by rotating the knob of the potentiometer, follow the equation T_high=0.693*(Ra+Rb)*C , T_low=0.693*Rb*C
Hence varying Rb will do the trick

I don't understand why you use a lighter to melt your shrink tube, with the risk of burning the plastic. You MUST have a heat gun somewhere, and you should show people how to use it to properly shrink your tubing
