- Phil shows you how to install a metal roof on a curved mobile home. Single-wide mobile home. The same material that you'd use for any metal roof can be used with this type of roof. You just need to do some adjusting to how you put the metal.

Suggest putting the screws right next to the ribs/ridges and not in the middle of the flat metal.
Also a bead of caulk along the junctures will help too.
They are supposed go through the top of the ridges, if not valleys will leak!

With the wind and such, I am unsure how to deal with sewer vents and other roof penetrations.
I also want to thank you for your channel. You saved me a bundle when I did my skirting.
The sewer vents stay under the metal reducing maintenance and possible leaks. The videos I have on the curved metal roofs are from my experience doing roofs this way for over 20 years. I am truly happy to share what I have learned knowing full well I have still much more to learn in the future.

I am doing a roof for my 12x60 MH and half the metal (original 1972 roof) ripped off in a storm, there wouldn't be anything keeping the gases out... TY
This is exactly what I'm planning on doing. Glad to see this works. However, I plan on doing it correctly lol. 27 years. Oh boy. 27 years of wavy roof lines that blow up in high winds. 2 screws on the bottom row. Each row. Seal the seams. Ice will back up water. Unless you live in no wind or cold state this will be fine.

I also have a 12x58 single and have been wondering for years if those metal panels would flex enough to do exactly what you are doing. That is really good to know. I have been looking for this exact clean simple solution but didn't know if those panels would flex that much. Thank you!
Yessir I was trying to come up with something more affordable than building over the roof then installing metal. By the by. You need to use the lighter 29 gauge.
@@StraightArrowRepair I was concerned about putting all that extra weight on the structure with lumber and plywood--seems like a lot. Thanks for the gauge tip. I figured the lighter stuff would flex more for the narrow 12 foot width.

First thanks for your videos and all the attention you give the viewers. I live in Pa (snow/ice winter conditions). Is it necessary to put pressure treated pine on the edges?
Not necessarily. I would think non treated would work. When it comes to customers I error o the side of caution.

3 inch wood screws to hold the wood to the rafters 1 12 metal to wood screws on fastening the the roofing Hope that helps and I wish you well on your project
Thank you ! What do you do with the underneath of the 6" overhang ? I also have a single wide with a bowed roof that I want to put a metal roof over. We are going to be adding siding to the outside to make the walls thicker (they are smaller than 2x4 currently).
Doesn't have to have but maybe an inch. I used to have trimmed made by the company that sells the metal. Something similar to crown mold but it has a lip down on the bottom. Also a lip on the top that slid under the overhang. You could have a 4 inch straight petal along the edge . Corners are the toughest to fabricate. Started offering it as a option. Most people are on a budget. Hope that helps.
Thank you sir for sharing I have been racking my brain trying to get an esti6 for our roof and no one is willing to do metal roof. I just wonder if we could use 12feet long panel on 12 12 feet wide and do you have video on flashing.
There should be several videos on curved roof mobile homes. Including how to estimate . As far as flashing I don't know where you are wanting to use the flashing . Still there should be info on your roofing questions . I am very happy to be of any kind of help . wouldn't it be great if we all helped one another. I wish you well.

Yes you can install metal roofing on your mobile home there in Virginia. I have installed two of these in Denver Colorado area which has high wind and lots of snow. I live in North West Arkansas. Lots of wind, rain some snow. You will have maintenance around your penetrations that's all. Regards gable ends. I haven't done that. 29 years or so ago I would use light weight metal studs to frame a peaked roof when the customer wanted to build a barn over their home. Simply to control weight. You might consider that. I believe in you can not can't. I am an American not and not an American't. Hope that helps.
The screws are indenting into the metal. Interesting. Where did you get metal for curve roof
Regular metal will bend that much with no issues at all. The screws are set deeper because of insulation / vapor barrier underneath. Material called prodex. Hope that helps. Installed roofs like this for over 25 years with no problems, just maintenance around penatrations. Oh and I put the plumbing vents underneath the metal
Shoulda ran the nailer the direction of the rafters first, then run the second “top” nailer parallel with the long side of the trailer that way the roof can breathe so your daily condensation will evaporate. This would also give you the ability for a longer overhang and a way to attach it

I should add it would cost more to the customer. Material and labor added.
You could have shown how you dealt with the ends. Did you have to cut the middle of the panel on the ends? How did you use trim pieces and attaching to cover the ends.
If you use ends they will be straight pieces that will need to be cut. I did not use ends per they're request added cost for materials and added cost for labor. I adjust to their budget.. It is my job to make their lives better. Not to force things on them they cannot afford

I have a 12 x70 mobile home with transition at each end where the living room is. To create a 8 foot ceiling in the home. It's a 1976 trailer. The two transitions have me worried about doing the roof myself. If you could please give me a tip, on how to get past the transitions. Also where would be the best place for me to purchase the metal here in eastern North Carolina. Big fan of your videos! Keep up the great work.
There is a video on doing a roof like that with me traveling to limon Colorado. It those transitions. Keep in mind I had altitude sickness while doing the job . Your metal building supply is where you get the material with exception of wood and tar. Hope that helps.

A material called prodex . It has a r9 value and stocks to itself acting as a vapor barrier. The snow load is every bit as much as the original mobile home roof and much more with no slack so there is no more roof rumble caused by wind. I installed one in limon Colorado no problems yet ( a few miles from Denver) . Glad to be of any help to my fellow man . I wish you and yours well

I have a trailer with the same roof shape. Do you think if I laid OSB down first it would be a problem? Can the insulation lay right on top of the OSB without any condensation issues caused by the metal roof panels? Sorry for late question but I just came across your awesome video…
You can do both of the things you asked with no issues.
Did you put the borads on it still or just used the osb? I just put osb over my metal roof and now it just buying the insulation and those the thin but long boards but not sure if i absolutely need to or not and just buy the metal and put them on without those boards. What did you do?
So I was trying to redo my roof and it blew off, Im looking at the roof frame now, can I just add the running boards, insulation and new panels? Or do I try to put the old roof back on, then the new panels??

Yes you will need to install the roof the same particularly don't skip the vapor barrier. Hope that helps. By the by I see your problem before usually when people take off the cheapy looking gutters they actually hold the metal roof on. Most people don't know that and go to take those off to install larger gutters and a wind comes along and blows the roof off. Still You can do it. Don't let it get you down. Recognize improvise overcome.

Have been using 29 guage. Perhaps with snow load you might consider 26 guage and a steeper pitch . I wish you well on your project.
Thank you for your helpful video. I have been searching for a video on how to put metal roofing on my 60 x12 ft 1972 Marlette trailer home. My roof is curved but has about 18-24" step down transition in the middle of the trialer. Do you have any pointers for me on how to proceed? Also: you mention to use a 29 guage metal, I am wondering if I could use 26 guage and cut in the middle and cover with a ridge cap? I ask this question because I have a chance at picking up 26 guage at an auction for a very reasonable price and I am on a tight budget. Thank you very much for all your help.
Sounds like it would work.You will need the foam closure for under the ridge cap. As far as the transitioned roof I have a video on one in Colorado. I wish you and yours all the best.
My roof have exhaust pipes and breathers, What's will I have to but holes in the panels
Yes they make roof jacks to seal around them . Works just like a regular roof. By the way all to roof need maintenance around penetrations. The fancy shingle house also. They just get they're shingles replaced replaced when the leak starts to show. Then they get told about the added costs for replacing plywood around that penetration. Maintain penetrations on your roof. I am going on to much. I hope that the info helps.

6 inches is good. If you are not going to move the home anytime soon you can go out 1 foot

@@katherineavery8882 I have found the more complicated you make it the problems you have. On your roof particularly. 29 gauge metal not 26. You are not a bother at all. Hi again should the metal panels be galvanized or no? I need measurements of the panels and where I could buy them . Having a tuff time finding them is there a certain name for the sheets ? No sir although maintenance is required around penetrations

Possibly I haven't tried it yet.

Are those 1x3 wood ? 6 across ? 2 feet apart ? Glad to help in any way at all . The metal material you can find at your local metal building suppliers . It will need to be 29 or 28 gauge metal. To allow for it to shape to the roof . As far as I know they only come in 37 inch width. Length can be whatever you decide to have hang over each side. I have been using 1 1/2 metal to wood screws from the metal building suppliers. Same with the insulation. The 1 by 3 and 1/2 or one by 4s at your lumberyard along with the three inch screws to fasten them. Finally the tar also at your lumberyard. How you do that but after I install the wood boards just put the prodex down over the boards? Tape or screw to the boards ? No more than two feet depending on the width of your home .Insulation installed on top of wood . Plumbing vents cut flush to mobile home roof. Metal roof over them sheets are only 36 or 37 inches wide. 1 by 4s 8 foot or any length longer. No need for pressure treatment. In all these instances you can watch multiple videos and get all your answers and confidence from watching it get done. Also you could install a section at a time as you can afford it.

Metal building material available at a metal building supply. Not aluminum.
I’m afraid I’m going to cut a cable when screwing the 3” , how do I know that there’s no electrical cables ?
In all the time I have been installing roofs the last 40 years I have not had this problem. Doing the math going through the metal roofing 1/8 inch the 1 by four is 3/4 inch the insulation is 1/4 inch the metal roof of trailer is 1/8 inch the rafter below is 2 and 1/4 grand total of 3 and 1/4 inches. You will be fine. Hope that helps.

First let me apologize for not getting back with you faster. Have been battling a flu . As a matter of fact that was my wife responding to your other post. To respond I am located in northwest corner of arkansas 12 miles east and north of Rogers Arkansas 16 miles east of Bentonville walmart headquarters. Sounds very interesting regards meeting although like you I presume I am backed with work. 3 months back this time of year. Why do you put that insulation on it
You don't have to. You can use foam insulation in between but you want some kind of insulation or you will get condensation which will rot the boards and run water down the screws.

I don't know why in the world anyone would want to use such dark colored roofing on anything especially on a mobile home. A white or light colored roof would be much cooler because it reflects the light away from your home rather than be absorbed into it. This would greatly lower your AC cooling use and lower your electrical power bill.
You make a solid argument. This customer wanted this color. To match the paint on her house. She was spectacularly happy. For years she had people working on her leaking roof. Now she doesn't have that problem. Working on the inside now.
@@StraightArrowRepair I live in a mobile home with kool seal on my roof and it doesn't leak. I'd think the shiny silver roof would reflect quiet a bit of the sun. Yet during the hot summer months my AC runs constantly during the day I cannot even imagine how I would keep it cool with a dark roof on it. I remember back when most homes had either galvanized tin and or white roofs and very few even had AC but today most all of them have gone to black, brown, and dark gray and have also added AC. Just don't make a lot of sense to me.
Why are mobile roofs a big problem. Why can’t you put a real roof on them? I would like to take off the entire roof and open it up like a tiny house is build with wood inside and a metal roof.
I have seen it done. So it is possible
There are lots of videos of that. There are some older mobile homes with flat roofs that I've read can't support the weight, but most just need a new roof built up with the desired angles.
As for metal, however, even residential houses often choose metal over shingles etc because it lasts longer. I have been comparing all roofing types I can find, and it seems like the best long term solution is metal, with lots of reports of it outlasting the house, which is needed in windy areas where shingles only last a few years.
