    I love the cinematography!!!!! Hannah, you are doing wonderfully. I happen to like the different depths of field. Nick, I would love to sit and watch you make knives. looks like you have a passion, and a lot of skill. Your leather work is amazing. keep up the awesome work guys! only complaint is that it's been 6 months since your last video. I'm completely hooked, I need my fix.

    Several questions/comments:
    Love the design.
    What kind of wood is that you used for the scales? Love the color and figuring.
    What kind of green hone is that?
    What kind of steel did you use?
    Liked the music too.
    All in all, very nice job.

    It was good watching you do it. Lewis Razors is a good teacher and not to tell how he does it. If you don't mind what kind of steel and was there a heating and tempering sorry if I am being nosey . Thanks for showing what you're doing.

    • @imetbenharper
      @imetbenharper  8 років тому

      Hi no problem at all. The steel in this razor is CPM-S35VN it is a powder metallurgy steel and is a little more work than O1 steel to make a razor from the pay off is it doesn't need sharpening as much and does not rust. There are better steels then this that have finer grain for razor edges. 3v holds a razor edge for a long time. The heat treatment happens after your razor is very close to how you like it. All shaping should be done before this and the edge left at about 1mm. This prevents the razor from melting away. After the razor has been heat treated the fun finishing work begins. Don't forget to drill the pivot hole before heat treatment. Hope this helps.

      Hi there! The grinder is a "multitool" brand they are Australian and alright for the money.
      www.multitoolaustralia.com/products.html
      They bolt on to existing 8inch bench grinders. I put mine onto an abbot and ashby grinder and it's great. I burnt out the old grinder making knives with it.

    Absolutely gorgeous razor. I'm going to start making a few razors (and knives) in the near future so I have a couple questions, if you don't mind. Mainly how thick was the steel stock that you started with? It seems thinner than what I see a lot of people using (and that's what appeals to me). It looks a lot more "simple and classic" than some of the much larger blades I am seeing.

    • @imetbenharper
      @imetbenharper  8 років тому

      +Jim Westbrook (R1ppK0rd) Hey mate. The steel I used was about 5mm. I am a bit the same I don't want to hold a big piece of steel when shaving. At the time I made this razor there was not an in depth simple tutorial so that was part of my mission. Stu from boxer razors helped me so much. This may help you as a reference when making. www.instructables.com/id/Cut-throat-razor/

  • @shogrran
    @shogrran 8 років тому

    Nice simple look. As someone who just likes to watch these kinds of videos, I have a question on what's the difference between just grinding it out to shape over forging the blade?

    • @nickmagic7753
      @nickmagic7753 8 років тому

      Forging is the process of heating and hammering an object to shape. It can be done with razors but unless you are incredible stock removal/ grinding will still need to be done at the end. With razors I believe you want the best possible steel you can with a nice fine even distribution of particles. If you don't you may get an inclusion on the edge of your razor. This can make all your hours of careful shaping go down the drain. Hope this helps. 👍👍

    • @shogrran
      @shogrran 8 років тому

      Powell Made does it have any effect on the sharpness, strenght, flexibility, ability to hold the edge of a blade if it was forged over if it was just grinded from the start?

    • @nickmagic7753
      @nickmagic7753 8 років тому +2

      If you were to use a powder metallurgy stock steel like I have used here it gives it a very strong even grain. It's like MDF board compared to say the grain in a tree. An experienced blacksmith who can read the steel while he makes a blade can forge a very very strong piece of steel. In Scandinavia the knives are hammered in different directions when forming an edge. This technique pushes the grain of the steel to be more like a refined knot in a tree. Very strong. Under the microscope the razor edge can be seen like that of a saw teeth because of this method. In terms of edge holding each steel has different components carbon, molybdenum, cromium etc. So if the steel has a lot of vanadium in it then it would hold an edge for a very long time. You could forge a razor from 440 stainless but you may end up with a razor that needs constant stropping to hold its edge or it may not want to take a razor edge. What's in the steel is important and how the heat treat is done also. Mess up the heat treatment and you can turn a wonderful steel into something useless. 😀

    Very beautiful straight razor. I just recently started using a safety razor, but I might graduate to the next step eventually either by making one like you have, or buying one. Although I'm leaning more towards making one. I will be able to appreciate it even more and learn from many probable mistakes that I will end up making to make an even better straight razor the next time. One question for you @powellmade, the wood that you used has a beautiful grain to it and looks a little exotic as well and I wanted to find out what type of wood that you used. Thanks and awesome vid!

    • @nickmagic7753

      Ah the timber. :) This is Carissa lanceolat or conkerberry. It is a small parasitic shrub that grows in northern parts of Queensland. It is a desert timber and so is incredibly slow growing. It is VERY hard to get because it is protected. This piece was collected by a friend of mine who scourers flood plains for dead trees. It is almost non porus and after wetting you can see the water fall off it. The wedge is made from pink gidgee (not purple) which is also very rare and I only had a piece smaller then a mobile phone. Super hard stuff!!! You could use desert ironwood for a similar effect but you would need to buy from someone who knows their stuff and can select you the right piece for the job. Hope this helps

    • @imetbenharper
      @imetbenharper  8 років тому

      Most people start with O1 steel because of its ability to be easily worked and heat treated. This steel S-35VN is not in that category. i wanted something is didn't have to hone much or take care of so it suited me. I have heard 3v steel holds a razor edge for a long time and if I made another it would be out of that. Hope this helps. 👍

    could u use a wheel grinder instead of a belt sander? I'm assuming if u change out the wheel.

    • @nickmagic7753
      @nickmagic7753 7 років тому

      You certainly could. Two things to keep in mind are if you are doing it post heat treat pick a really course wheel to do your rough in. Fine wheels build a lot of friction and you will burn the heat treat. If I had lots of money and did this a lot I would buy a tormek water cooled wheel. The second thing is go really slow and mark things out. It is easy to do something fast and destroy your grind. If you find yourself wanting to grind fast put the razor blank down and return when your feeling free to relax. Hope this helps. 👍

    • @ModernBladesmith
      @ModernBladesmith 7 років тому +1

      coil springs or any other springs, but some thinner leaf springs may have some hair fractures. you can use tool steels from wrenches, chisels, hammers, axes, etc. you can use anything that used to be a blade like old sawzall blade, hacksaw blade, band saw etc. anything that has some deal of spring or hardness will suffice.

    • @biltorres3510
      @biltorres3510 7 років тому

      And with respect to the cutting wire. Will these sawing metals give the same cutting edge as a razor?

    • @ModernBladesmith
      @ModernBladesmith 7 років тому +1

      A hack saw or band saw blade should shave, but it's dangerously thin and probably shouldn't be used to shave unless you forge weld a few together. Coil springs will probably be the best to use, and the worst to use would be any modern saw blade that isn't a high carbon wood blade. Any other carbide tipped or diamond coated blade will have a soft mild steel core. You should hitting up a mechanics shop that is locally owned. they will pretty much give away scrap if you ask. If you need to you can always go to a scrap yard, but if you do that you may as well buy some 1080 - 1095 or some 5160 for like $1usd per foot.

    • @biltorres3510
      @biltorres3510 7 років тому

      What kind of tempering is used on 5160 steel for razor?

    • @ModernBladesmith
      @ModernBladesmith 7 років тому

      well i wouldn't know, but you would most likely oil quench it since that's how 5160 hardens. then after that just temper it at maybe... 425? i don't know since it's a razor, but 425f might work. i'll look into a blade forum about the subject later.

  • @gunnMetal
    @gunnMetal 7 років тому

    Why is it you put tape on the spine of the blade before sharpening?

    • @imetbenharper
      @imetbenharper  7 років тому

      This prevents the spine of the razor from wearing down with each sharpen. As time goes the spine thins and your bevel on your leading edge becomes much wider and steeper. Basically it preserves the life or the razor.

      I believe straight razor is the most widely used term for them. Here in Aussie land I like to call them Cut throat razors because not all of them are straight. Straight razor will have most people understanding what you are talking about though.

      DedPwul- King Of The Dank Memes... straight razor's are just flat sharpened steel you can buy from your local shaveing shop and they would come in 10 or 15 razors. The cutthroats have a slight curve inwards on both sides inwards towards the base.

      Hey mate and thank you for your nice comment. Means a lot when someone takes the time to write something nice. The steel here is S35VN I ordered the steel from the states in stock form. Because of the unusual heat treatment powder metallurgy steels get I don't do the forging process. I wanted something almost stainless because my friends razor is all rusted at the pivot. 🙁. I still use this razor and no rust :))) I do however have to use diamond compounds to get the edge right as before normal ones just don't get it sharp enough as you can see at the end of the video. If I did it again I would use 3v as the steel as this holds a razor edge longer.

    I will not deny that your craftsmanship is admirable, but is it too much to ask for a single clip where the shot is entirely in focus? I was too distracted by the abysmal camerawork to truly appreciate what you have created, and it gave the entire video a dreary tone when paired with that music. Again, your knife work is impeccable, but your cinematography needs improvement.

      +jose Martinez Yup! Especially when he was doing under his chin. Dangerous place to have a sharp but not sharp enough blade.

      Yes! You are right!! Even though this razor was finished to 60000 grit it was not sharp enough. The problem occurred by the chice of steel. I wanted a razor that wouldn't rust and would hold an edge. Coming from knife making I chose a powder metallurgy steel. The steel has 3 percent vanadium. When sharpening the vanadium rounds rather then cutting like in a softer steel like O1. How I got around this problem was to use a diamond compound hard enough to cut the steel.

      I would think anyone with the skill to make such a gorgeous tool, would know how to properly care for a high carbon steel blade. O1 or even A1 may be "softer" than a powdered metal, but it is hard to beat the classics for a high quality blade.
      Workmanship was top notch, and I really liked the music paring with the video.
