That is a beautiful razor! Hope to visit your shop sometime soon, you guys do amazing work and your razors are extremely reasonably priced for the craftsmanship that goes into them. Well done.
BEAUTI FULL shape of the blade, BEAUTI FULL designed, AMAZING work...With that Straightrazor i will shave my self every day, AWESOME NESS... LOVE it ! ! !
Some day I'll add one of your blades to my collection. Your razor is extremely beautiful and the craftsmanship impeccable, but the name camp hatchet might be a better name. How wide is that a 12/8 blade. All joking aside, you've made functional art, bravo.
+caleb McCullough (Blistersteel) We set the bevel using coarse diamond stones, and then refine the edge on a variety of stones all the way to 12-thousand grit. You can read more about our honing process here: www.portlandrazorco.com/blog/2015/2/23/honing-at-portland-razor-co-part-ii-how-to-hone
We do, we didn't catch it on camera, unfortunately. It's a lengthy process that requires a lot of focus to be done well, so it's no surprise we forgot to hit 'record.'
+drmatt357 Thanks! We harden and temper the steel after initial grinding (when we remove most of the material) and before surface grinding (when the final shape and polish is achieved).
Could you make a video with you shaving with one of your razors. I’ve seen may of your razors, but no one has been able to tell me if your razors shave well. I’ve asked on may razor forums and still haven’t been able to get much info.
Thanks for your question. We use tape for the first honing on razors we make but can hone them without upon request. Razors sent to us for honing by other makers will be honed consistent with the method used by the original manufacturer.
Wow that is a sick looking design. Did you sell it or keep it? Im looking to upgrade my razor and was wondering how much that might go for... custom build and all.
Thanks for your question! It really depends. A normal production razor may only take a few hours of time actually hands-on (with heat treatment taking several more). A custom razor like this can take days or even weeks to make.
Hello, I know that you know what you're doing, but DO NOT WORK WITH GLOVES AT THE BELTSANDER! Something tragic can happen. Awesome project and skill btw!
+Portland Razor Co. Ow, I was thinking it was not a real Damascus, that those patterns were from the ferric solution when it was resting by hanging. Great stuff though. Congratulations.
Good question. Straight razors are very different from most knives in that the spine needs to remain a certain thickness in relation to the width of the blade. This is because straight razors are honed with the spine and the edge flat on the stone, and the width:thickness ratio determines the final bevel angle.
Cheers! This razor was commissioned by a client and is not for sale. If you are interested in commissioning a similar straight razor or have any other questions, shoot us an email: info@portlandrazorco.com
Thanks for commenting, guys! Straight razors are quite different from other cutting tools. Straight razors are sharpened with the edge and the spine both in contact with a sharpening stone to achieve a consistent final bevel angle. For this reason, the ratio of stock thickness to blade width is very important.
On the contrary! We find curved blades are really great for shaving the many curved surfaces of the face. Plus, they have fewer pointy bits to catch yourself on.
Okay i had an old cuved razor a few years ago and i cut myself pretty the first 5-6 times i dont really know why i guess i was just used to a straight blade
Very nice. I visited your shop a couple of years ago and bought a 'Siren' razor. You guys do very good work.
Thanks for your support! We miss being able to host folks in our workshop. Maybe we will again one day.
WOW...Master work...BEAUTIFUL,LOVE IT ! ! !
Thank you so much!
Many many compliments 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Well Done! Enjoyed the video.
Can I buy this razor and how it will cost?
great work Hunter!
Cool video, awesome shop !!
Thanks! We remember the little shop in SE Portland fondly, but are happy to be in a bigger space on the west side now =)
Since there is only one blade edge what difference does a larger blade make? What is the largest blade you routinely make?
I love your work is there any possible way you can make a butterfly razor that takes disposable blades? I would love to purchase one if you can.
Wow that's awesome. What does a custom like that go for?!
hello,nice job.
out of curiosity, what was the first stone ? cheers !

@@Portlandrazorco Un GRAND MERCI pour votre lien, et a très vite du coup !!!
So nice, Harambe would've shaved with it.
What do you use for pivots? Do you use a bushing or just a pin?
Hi Shane, we generally use brass pins and washers peined by hand, but in this case we used nickel-silver pins with stainless washers.
Wonderful video do you not heat and temper the blade as well?
We do, we didn't catch it on camera, unfortunately. It's a lengthy process that requires a lot of focus to be done well, so it's no surprise we forgot to hit 'record.'
Well done. At what point is the steel hardened? When it's the blank or after grinding?
+drmatt357 Thanks! We harden and temper the steel after initial grinding (when we remove most of the material) and before surface grinding (when the final shape and polish is achieved).

Thanks for your question! We will get a shaving tutorial video put together... someday. Right now our focus is on completing our backorder.
Bro, that's one of the nicest looking razors I've ever seen. Fuck that pro-glide stuff. That's pro right der!
Thanks for the kind words! We try to keep it profess 'round here.
Amazing work, but terribly clinch rivets.
do you tape the spine for every blade while you are honing?
Thanks for your question. We use tape for the first honing on razors we make but can hone them without upon request. Razors sent to us for honing by other makers will be honed consistent with the method used by the original manufacturer.

muito bom de ótima qualidade!!!
do you guys do classes?
We teach classes on straight shaving, stropping, honing, and straight razor maintenance.
What steels were used to make the damascus?
+Joe M This particular blade was about 120 layers of 52100, 1080, and 15N20 of varying thicknesses.
+Portland Razor Co. Ow, I was thinking it was not a real Damascus, that those patterns were from the ferric solution when it was resting by hanging. Great stuff though. Congratulations.
+Daniel Aiala They are. That is how you expose the pattern in pattern welded steel.
seems like the chunk you started with was really thick? why start with a slab like that?
Good question. Straight razors are very different from most knives in that the spine needs to remain a certain thickness in relation to the width of the blade. This is because straight razors are honed with the spine and the edge flat on the stone, and the width:thickness ratio determines the final bevel angle.
Very interesting for me ) Just Subs to ur channel ! Thumbs UP !
Great job brother, what's the price for that razor?

What kind of wood was that?
I believe it's a particularly expressive piece of figured walnut.
Portland Razor Co. beautiful piece of wood. Bring the whole thing together.
did you heat treat?
Of course!
Good
Do you have a website?
www.portlandrazorco.com
well done but isnt it too thick? quite a workout could have used thinner stock, anyway great work
He could have used thinner stock but because it is a hollow grind it doesn't really matter. The angle stays the same
ExplodingScience i mean just for the weight of it.

Beautiful work but that curve is going to f**k you up the first couple of times
On the contrary! We find curved blades are really great for shaving the many curved surfaces of the face. Plus, they have fewer pointy bits to catch yourself on.
Okay i had an old cuved razor a few years ago and i cut myself pretty the first 5-6 times i dont really know why i guess i was just used to a straight blade

+Portland Razor Co. Hey. what is a average price of your straight razors? im really looking forward to get my custom one.
Wait I saw autotransformer, this means you use AC for etching, this is wrong.
For etching we should use DC!
