This really hits home. I am 45 and had a referral to a neurologist who took my BP once in each arm and said it was high. This was fed back to my GP who took their own measurement once and told me I had stage 2 hypertension and prescribed my bp meds then and there. I foolishly accepted as was worried about other symptoms, I have a mum who died 14 months prior of heart issues who had high bp and the gp also said my cholesterol was high. Not once was a 24hr monitor offered or even suggested. After seeing a cardioligist they arranged a 24hr monitor and my average BP was 120/75. Now I am stopping the bp meds after 4 weeks for a period of two months and will then do another 24hr monitor. I am annoyed with myself that I went on bp meds but even more annoyed that gp is so willing. My weight is fine, I walk 5k most days, don’t smoke, drink very little alcohol and eat fairly well but all GP was looking at was a single BP reading.

This is the irony of modern, mechanized, robotic doctor health care. The patient is a numbered rat in a laboratory cage. That's all you are to the health "care" profession. They are greedy and narcissistic for the most part.

I am 75 and have had high BP and A-Fib I got rid on the A-Fib by cutting out all sugar and wheat and eating and juicing a lot of green leafy vegetables (Kale and spinach) 5 glasses a day. Also taking 3 grams of magnesium Now my BP is normal. Now I am back to running 2 1/2 hours a day. Thank you Dr Gupta I have been watching these videos and was able to cobble together my program from watching them.

The white coat syndrome is a huge factor. Not just because of the unfamiliar environment but because so much potentially hinges upon it. From recommendations for medication to anxiety about the situation leading to possible curtailment of one's lifestyle, perhaps even to impact on one's employment. Good to see recognition of the unreliability of the 'professional' taking of blood pressure.

I completely agree. I'm a nurse and when I measure my blood pressure at work, it's always high, with systolic number as high as 150. But since I'm not a morning person, I've always had little sleep before work, I'm busy all day and not in a great mood because of all that so it seems kind of logical to have higher blood pressure in these conditions. But when I'm at home, my blood pressure is always normal and sometimes even lower that I thought my normal blood pressure would be.

Thank you for your very thorough and informative videos Dr. Gupta. In my particular case I was blessed enough to have found a cardiologist who recommended just what you mention about BP measurements. The result of a 24 hour ambulatory monitoring and an echo cardiogram was a recommendation to medicate a mild hypertension with a low dose 3 days a week regimen of Telmisartan ( I live in Mexico, am 76 yrs of age). I write this in order to give testimony as well as gratitude for having found you. Respectfully: Suzanne.

I had a white coat test of 114/79 after running up a flight of stairs because I was late for my appointment. I’m telling you all this because you might find it interesting to know that I have been taking nicotinamide riboside for the last three years. Was 120/80 before I started. I’m a seventy yo male. Cool huh?

Thank you again Dr Gupta. All your videos reassure me. Former svt sufferer (ablated) have raised blood pressure and bad anxiety and all your videos help. I discuss you with Dr pepper in Leeds when I see him for review and tell him how good you are and your videos. Thanks from all of us guys who can't really afford multiple private appointments or have G.P's who just dismiss us or don't seem to really give us time. We all appreciate your a highly paid well educated experienced cardiologist who doesn't have to take his time out to make these videos but the fact you do helps so many of us as the heart is something that causes many of us so much worry. Hilarious... in the sense that MY doctor picked up my BP monitor and threw it in the waste paper basket saying it was 'rubbish'. He told me never to take my own measurements and to depend on those taken in his office or in hospital. I can understand his feelings when people take BP themselves irregularly and obsessively, but I was doing what you suggest here and taking measurements three times a day at precise times and averaging out weekly results. Despite my doctor's negativity I continue to do so and this gives me a much better indication of how I am doing and when I am getting too stressed in my recovery 18 months after a stroke. If only all doctors were as positive as you are and treated their patients like intelligent human beings.

He asked me to take mine on his machine to see if it read the same. As I sat at the table to do that, his bride leaned over staring at the screen. Then she took her fingernail and peeled off the clear plastic screen protector which had 120/80 printed on it....

Absolutely correct! before i went to see my doctor, my bp reading at home was 115/77 (reading was before taking meds, im hypertensive, have history of anxiety and depression), when at my doctor's room, my bp reading went up to 170/90! but when i came back, my bp came down back to normal! crazy! maybe its because my doctor charges me a lot for consultation HAHA thanks for this video Doctor Gupta!

@@p.johnson9502 I wonder if doctors have these machine calibrated to make sure they are correct. I am a small person and my arm is very small. The cuff they use on me is large. I have to remind them every time to give me a small cuff. One time my bp was high, the doctor had the nurse take it again after my appointment was over and it was fine. I find the manual way of taking bp is more accurate than the digital one. Also the bp monitor manufacturer told me cuffs have to replaced periodically, I also question if the doctor's office know that.

Sorry to hear about your dad but glad he is doing better. Thanks for the video again very helpful. I had my bp measured at the hospital yesterday and the nurse put the cuff over my sleeve and my arm was bent and she told me it was high🙄. I have white coat hypertension anyway so I'm not surprised. Surely they need to do these tests more accurately.

Yes, they do it wrong at hospitals and clinics. Mine is always high. They put over sleeve, arm not at heart level and they talk to you while they measure it. Then they want to put you on meds. Ridiculous...they are professionals.

Thank you, Doctor Gupta for all of your great videos! I had an ablation two years ago for afib. I am not aware of still having episodes, but would like to make sure. What would be the best options for determining whether or not I am still having afib episodes?
