I am very surprised that the, diastolic number does not reflect the damage to the heart in comparison to the systolic pressure. My diastolic pressure when I was ill with adrenal exhaustion was 184/130. I was very sick. After years and years of going to doctors (that did t help me; no fault of their own), I have survived. I found you during my search for answers. You are so mind because you are honest! Thank you so very much for your free service. If there is an angel next to the dictionary definition, you’re it! We need to vote YOU for the BEST and the most AMAZING cardiologist on earth!!!!
Unfortunately, meds are the first choice of treatment for high BP in the US and not because doctors care for the patients but it’s more about lawsuits and just to cover themselves.
Not saying this lightly nor ignorantly as I have worked with many cardiologists as a registered nurse all my life.
Not sure if I blame them totally as anytime some unfortunate incident happens to a patient there is always a lawsuit .
Thank you for being so honest! You might not be gifted holidays by drug agents but you definitely have all our love and respect which no money can buy!

That doctor is an absolute lie! I don't know if you believe in the God of the Bible but I'd start with prayer to Him. I asked him to show me the way to stay off these bp drugs and he did. I am doing well and I had heart surgery! My surgeon said I wouldn't necessarily be on bp meds for the rest of my life but cardiologist said otherwise and that I would be on for life. That us not true. My surgeon is right.

Diastolic pressure is extremely sensitive to stress. Unfortunately I suffer from this problem and I try to control it with breathing techniques. Another fact that sets the tone that the rise in blood pressure is emotional is that when I take my blood pressure when I wake up it is always below 120/80.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Over 20 years with on and off isolated diastolic hypertension. It began during my first pregnancy. I've been put on soooo many medications, with all the side effects and weight gain that come with them. I now have severe white coat syndrome, where even looking at a bp machine will make my bp go up. And prior to the bp meds I was at a healthy weight, I have since gained 30 lbs over the years and am overweight. In my case, I feel that the medical establishment failed me and did more harm than good. I was a healthy young woman with a little bit of anxiety and they convinced me that, if I didn't take these pills, I was a ticking time bomb. Yet, none of them ever investigated further as to WHY my bottom number might be elevated. (Stress? Lifestyle?) I feel like such a fool for believing them. Never again. I'm now on the slow road to taking charge of my life and getting my health back. Thank you so much for all you do, Doctor, to help people through your channel. I wish all doctors were like you.

Wish I had known this 30 years ago, my diastolic is always 'high' and the reason (I was told by many doctors) for multiple medications for too long. Even with 'stable' and acceptable readings at exams, i'm told if i go off the meds i will have a stroke. Scare tactics and the wheel of always feeling off from the medications have me beyond frustrated with the system. Always enjoy watching your informative videos, so grateful for your no nonsense and calm presentations. It is encouraging when the flip side has left me in lurch and unable to wean me off the meds, even while my diastolic is at 'normal' levels . How would one move from multiple pills daily to a prescription free life? I'm going to use this video as a discussion point with my doc on next annual exam!

I am not as active as i was before covid, of course and i am 51, but still far from menopause. The doctor said to monitorize the pressure for a while and if it is always high she will put me on medication 😬i wasn't happy with the visit, I must admit

I'm hoping to naturally reduce my diastolic pressure after seeing a higher than normal average today of 96. My average systolic pressure was 124 which is still slightly higher than the normal standard but my diastolic used to be in the low to mid 80s at worst. I have gained some weight back and haven't been eating as well as I should these past few weeks so I'm hoping that taking my diet seriously and moving around a little more would help. Thank you for the advice. I really want to avoid medication at all costs since I believe you're right in that it's a disservice to patent and doesn't address any underlying conditions. I'm pretty sure my number is high due to my weight (obesity) and eating more processed and salty food than I should have eaten.

Thank you for this. I'm not an obese person but high BP runs in my family. Recently i found out I in the family had high BP (160/100) and now on meds & making lifestyle changes. But i saw on my BP device i was 116/90. I thought the bottom number creeping up was bad but after listening to your video i will continue to monitor and exercise and see if it slowly creeps back down.

Edit: exercise a bit more. I have only been doing 45 minutes of walking per day and eating better. I think im feeling confident enough to bump this up to an hour with a light 10 minute jog at the end.

@@louisem2097 Down 40 lbs since the incident. BP on medication sometimes still creeps to 135/85 If I'm feeling unwell but 95% of days I'm around 110/70.
Goal is to lose around 30 more lbs and hope by then I can size down my metaprolol dose.
Quality of life has improved and hope it stays that way. I've just now started to enjoy certain foods again. I'm still committed to my diet but I no longer feel terrified to eat anything else that isn't a fruit or vegetable.

    Dear Dr. Gupta
I have yet to see or meet a doctor of your caliber of sincerity to help the patients suffering for Hypertension and other Cardiovascular disorders. You are an ambassador of God to help cure the sufferers of disease with your sane advice through these wonderful eye opening videos.
I wish I had a doctor like you to help me get over my health concerns including hypertension and others that have taken away the joy out of my life. I am on medications for the past 14 years which I am sure are causing many adverse side affects. The basic issues remain the same or have got worse.
Currently I am based in the USA. How can I get in touch with you? By email of tele-consultation? Kindly advise and help.

I always thougt the dystolic pressure was pressure inside the heart. Thank you for clearing that up doc. So no need to worry if dystolic pressure is a little high?

Thanks for the video. However, I would like to get a little bit clarification. First, if possible lifestyle changes fail to make the diastolic pressure normal, would you approve use of drugs to lower it? Or will you still say that is unnecessary since the systolic is acceptable? Second, if I look at it this way..diastolic pressure is the pressure exerted when the heart relaxes, so elevation of distolic pressure implies that even at relaxing heart condition, the pressure exerted on the blood vessels is bit higher (compared to a person with normal diastolic pressure) and if it persists for very long time, say years, will it not cause some damage to the blood vessels (compared to a person with normal diastolic pressure)? I guess the answer depends on elastic properties of the blood vessels about which I have no knowledge. I am not sure if this poorly phrased question makes sense to you. (By the way, in Physics we define pressure to be the perpendicular force on a surface per unit area..)

He already answered. He said that if the vessels are already ok with 120 bars of mercury, then 95 mmHG is not going to hurt the vessels. What might be dangerous is 130-140 mmHG since it exceeds 120. So while there is an underlying problem, the isolated diastolic hypertension itself is not dangerous to vessels and organs.

I had this issue with 12 / 8.9, when I was going through stressful life events and was sedentary. I started brisk walking and a little bit of resistance training, and little bit calmed. Consistently for months, it has been 11 / 7.3 since then. Try moving around, eat better, and feel better, before jumping into these pills. The same goes for statins!

Thank you for the concept of ISOLATED DIASTOLIC HBP, which is new for me.
I personally experienced an isolated systolic HBP, in which case taking medication makes sense. However, it might result in bringing the diastolic to an unacceptable level.
What is the best attitude in this case?
