You can see the victory conditions on the clan management screen its partly the effort of you the player but its mostly influenced by the side you support (imperial or shogunate) displayed as key victory locations and provinces loyal to your side.

Looks like he didn’t have enough settlements under his own control within the time limit. Usually the shogunate factions take the imperial capital very quickly, so the loss was most likely due to his domain being too small.
The victory conditions are stupid in these games. Theyre like conquer the entire globe twice you have 3 turns. Just keep playing and see how everything goes with the rest of the AI they might concur the south or get killed and youll have to do it

Ive been waiting on another installment of Japanese pain campaign.
35:35 The short campaign stops in early 1871 and the long campaign stops late 1876. The victory conditions have to be completed in the proper time frame.I prefer the long campaign because you have more time for build up.

This is devastating to see you (technically) lost the campaign like this, but unfortunately, yes, you did lost to victory condition. You could check all that information by clicking at your clan banner near the "end turn" circle, but too late for that now. Still, I'm glad that you did press on and willing to finish this, so here are some of my opinions/advice
1. Try to localise your recruitment into very specific cities. I heavily recommend Ugo since it has a blacksmith. Upgrade it so that when you buy troop there, they have better stats.
2. As for army composition, you should focus on gun units. Even though Aizu buff the traditional units, they kinda suck at this late in the campaign. This is turn 170 already, and we have to factor in the amount of researches that the AI clans have already done. Enemy armies have had imperial infantry for years now so old school sword and spear won't cut it anymore, most of the time.
3. And because you only need to recruit in 1 province, go economy heavy everywhere else. Kinda pain me a little bit that you didn't destroy those 2 building in Uzen and replace with cottage industry and inn not gonna lie.
4. As for navies, I do hope you can clear some enemies out, but sadly the best ships are recruited in drydock, 1 tier higher than military port. By this time, the AI usually have explosive and armour piercing shell unlock, so even copper plated ships wont really stand that long. If you can, try to buy ironclad, and the HMS Warrior (by accepting the British event after finishing a trading port).
5. You can boost town growth by geisha, so recruit them if you can and put them in "rich" settlements, which is the whole north of Honshu because they are filled with fertile soil land anyway.
6. Cannons is really bad when being put inside city. you can only shoot them very limitedly as they are designed for field battles. That is why most of the time they wont shoot really well, as line of sight and angle dictate everything for gun units in general.
Overall, Im just glad that you really did your best to keep the series going and entertaining. But I do hope that, you will start another FOTS series in the future, having learnt your lesson about the game and from this Aizu campaign, so that you can have a better and more successful experience playing this game.

I would say concur the north and the 2 settlements/ provinces you captured in the south before everyone started attacking you.
I think you should continue playing this game you made me interested into it but also the game may have only certain amount of times you can play some do that.
I think we should do a new campaign! Maybe not expert campaign difficulty so you can actually build amazing units without getting attacked and raided every turn. Loving the series. So I would be excited to a new one where you can destroy the enemy! Those dogs!

Yeah, each campaign has a time limit of turns, where you need to capture certein provinces. The main fighting is usely happening in the center where both sides meet. You could send an invasionforce of your'e own (once you get a navy), past that point to capture their capital as a goal.
