Why do you crank it over to build oil pressure with the plugs in?? Would it not be better on the starter and be quicker to build pressure with the plugs out? It would sure turn over heck of a lot faster
That sound brings back happy memories, it idles like my old Dad's '57 oval 36er used to with the manual choke pulled on for a winter's morning start, warming up ready to commute to work. No doubt those air cooled engines are the greatest, so simple and uncomplicated, Mike it'll be good to see how it goes in the Blue Bug, though I prefer the 36 and 40 HP for their "gentle manners".
@@Mikefngarage YES! I was just about to suggest that. Been crazy about VWs since the 60s when a friend put a super 1600 Porche engine in his 61 beetle. I'm getting my 67 bus restored just the wire ,and engine and the transmission pops out in second gear so I'm having it repaired my question to you is if you dont use any part of my 1600 engine and I get an upgrade to a 1914 engine do I still have to give you a core?
I found a hunting buggy that that is the chassis and engine from a 67 for $500. The floor pan has a few rust holes. I wonder if the seller still has the body. I'll call tomorrow. Your engine sounds great. I think it will run well
If you have a timing light, which you need to accurately adjust the timing. You can use it on each plug wire to find that miss.maybe you just have a wire or plug issue. And not have to dig back into the engine.
If it was mine, i would be looking for a bigger carburator. Then check the main jet for proper mixture. Remember you installed a bigger cam. You need to feed it.
not on this one. I will be upgrading it as I find parts. The single port engines run pretty cool stock. I will be putting on the super cool tin later when I change the heads to dual port. We want to show both ways so people can use what they have.
I would put a vacuum advance distributor on it. And maybe try to get the venturi out, if the carb was 34 pict 3 and jet it accordingly. Other than that sounds pretty good, nice work!
@@nswiss19751 no it's not. 30 pict carbs got smaller bore diameter than 34 pict ones. You can use smaller carbs on 34 pict style manifold with an adaptor. But not vice versa.
Hey Mike I have a question, I have a stock 1600 , points are bad, can I run pointless in the stock vacuum advance distributor or should I switch to 009?
yes you can run it. Email pertronix. Having said that, they have had some quality control issues in the past and if you mix red/black, it's cooked. DONE. -- if you have stock carb, svda should work fine. Good luck !
Even if you go DP you will still need to make the main jet in a 34 over sized , if not you will run hot . Do you have another Progressive ? That will run like it is if you just up jet that 30. Or if you got enough room put a 30-34 adapter . I can think of some one who should at least overhaul their 1600 FI fast back (Brian) the nut.??? Rambus has had 4 cases 6 sets of pistons and probably 12-14 cranks and rods. The pistons that lasted the longest were Cofabs. . It has been at both sides of IH10 and has gone from Denver to Hope Canada and then down here to south Texas then to Florida and back. How I tell it is some of the parts have over 856,000 on them. OH yeah 9 sets of ball joints. Good Video Mike
checking around right now. I do have another one but I am putting it on another build. gonnd try some swap meet finds for this engine to keep it super low budget
the cheapest rebuilds are about 1200 if you DIY. for machine work and parts. if you have a good case. The most expensive non turbo engine is close to 10 grand. with carbs.
Hey Man! My Father and I are doing a Restoration series on a 1972 Super Beetle(Just Started Doing Videos), Tomorrow we are uploading a Motor Assembly Video! love the video and was just wondering by chance ,how did you start it on the ground? no tranny to hold the starter? just want to really see whats behind the motor haha. My Dad first car was a vw beetle and my dad has been restoring muscle cars for abt 25 years and just started back on beetles about 6 years ago. My first car was a vw beetle too and we mad a rat rod out of it , i have full video on the story about it. sadly had a tragic ending to it. would be nice if you could check it out and give us any advice on how to get this "vw youtube life" going. It'd be greatly appreciated
Engine rebuild and run videos are the best!! Nice little upgrade with the distributor.
The motor sounds so sweet man👍
Love the engine rebuild videos, more please😉
Yes bring on more rebuild vids, love it!
Good job Mike they are always like that till they are completely broken in!
Running well, keep up the good work :)
Great job Mike!! love the rebuild vids!!
Nice one, being back East would be doing this type for sure. It’s a runner! Excellent video as always!
thanks for that.
Yes great work as always Mike!!
Success well done. A useful workhorse.
Yup great job, love that sound!
Worth watching. Thanx
She sounds good 👌
That intial 2000 rpm run makes me nervous. LOL I did that on my other car for break in. I know its right to do, but sure makes me edgy. 😄 Sounds good.
Yes Mike! Put the motor in that beautiful Bettle...
I agree, sounds like a good home for that motor!
cranks pretty good with wires connected

yea I love that 40 that is in that one but Gotta try this 16 single should rip.
What type of oil filter system is that you have on this engine? I noticed it goes right on the oil pump.
Did you say you think it's only good for maybe 20k miles ? Why's that ?
The pump covers with the spin on oil filters are great for oil and bearing longevity. Also makes servicing a lot easier. Dead spot is due to the 009.
actually we changed the carb to a 31 pict 3.4 and the dead spot is gone. It can be masked by using a vacuum but not necessary.

Does that electronic ignition produce a hotter spark?
Just need to know does that CB oil filter pump interfere with a stock exhaust or it just works for aftermarket exhaust headers thanks?
Looks and sounds good ... keep doing budget staff. It is easy to do 10-grand engine.
Not so keen on "hand-adjustment" of distributor though.
Iv got about 150 in this one. ha ha. bet it runs longer than a GEX engine all new ha ha. or some of the other rebuilders.

Easiest quickest way to find a miss is drop a little bit of water on the exhaust tubes one by one 👍
Johnny Speed and Chrome , I used to live close to the retail store in Orange County Cali . They were great 80 s store like Car Custom in Azusa Cali.
yea for sure they are all long gone. scene has changed so much. and prices are much higher.
Are the missing pipes you mention at 25:55 part of the cooling system?
how much oil pressure should you have without spark before the initial start up?
when you fit that type of spin-on oil filter, do you still retain the old oil filter/screen?

@@Mikefngarage I'll inquire about the body
Could you possibly build a 1500? I like that size for my early microbuses.

where do you get the oil pressure gadge ? looked online but most dont have the right fittings thanks
oh we use a dash mounted gauge and just dont use the oil line. one of those standard universal ones. has perfect size to screw into the case.
where did you get the weld/bolt heater box to header flanges? do they work or leak?
car craft. We use them so the slip on ones like to slip off.

only have a manifold and carb for a 30 pict so I need to swap meet some more parts.
Is the footprint on the 30 carb same as the 34
@@nswiss19751 no it's not. 30 pict carbs got smaller bore diameter than 34 pict ones. You can use smaller carbs on 34 pict style manifold with an adaptor. But not vice versa.
if you would take an old trans housing and cut it verticaly you could crank on stand and not knee walk around it trying to start
Is that oil filter original to these engines? I forgot if they had them?
anyone know? thank you
What kit is that for the External oil filter?
CB performance maxi pump I believe
Will you do a video in the car?
The previous video, At @ I never saw the lower cylinder air deflectors go in? Critical mistake, if you didn't.
there in there. We used stock ones. not the cool tin. Cheap build.
sure, johnny's s&c. i purchased from them way back and still have a t-shirt (in a box somewhere) with their name on it.
they used to have a great show back in the 80s.

I dont remember the cc but we were going for around 8 to 1 and we had about .60 deck height.
Sounds like a 1600 or 1641.

Roger Berrier looks like a single port, type 1
Will this dizzy also work on a vanagon
I have done several type 4 engines just bearings and rings. plus heads. ran pretty good years ago.
I suppose you would need a differant coil.
What happened to Chris, I don’t see him much any more?
