This is a prime example of building on your knowledge base over years, youll eventually get to a point where you can have an idea and just make that game
Spelunky -> Deep Rock Galactic -> Rain World -> Outer Wilds -> FEZ -> Tunic is an insane run of influences. If this game truly takes elements from all of these games then I HAVE to get it!!!
oh my im glad I clicked on this video, I havent seen a good devlog in a while but this is insane, the visuals, how you explain things, the SOUND DESIGN are all insanely high quality. I can see you put a lot effort into this, also absolutley love everything about the game.
This is a surprisingly great devlog for a youtuber with only ~2k subs. You definitely deserve more. The game itself looks interesting and reminds me somewhat of Noita. I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's a great game that is one of my favorita games of all time due to its complexity, depth, and mechanics. The vast majority of the true goals are hidden by complex mysteries and it leaves a lot for the player to discover on their own, similar to some of the games you mentioned, like Fez and Rainworld. I seriously recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
Dude this is actually insane, you are an incredible game dev, everything i hope and aim to become. Im honestly really stunned after watching this video, i was not expecting to find a hidden gem of this much grandeur. Most definitely buying Deeplands on release (if i like the price ofc). My youtube recommended has finally started showing me all the good devlogs the past few days, Im glad, You all give me a goal i know i can strive for, making a -great- game solo, evident by all the amazing solo devs I see working thrice as hard as me every single day.
I like this game idea! The darkness of the game adds in a good level of mystery over a game like Spelunky for example. Something I recommend is zooming out the camera just a tiny bit more. The steam trailer, and the screenshots I think are just a little bit claustrophobic. You could also increase slightly the radius of the light around the player. Well made devlog though!
I agree with this. I work with a really large monitor, and looking at this game in fullscreen (I simulated it by full screening some screenshots of it) is simply really jarring to look at and causes eyestrain for me. An option to zoom out the camera by 2x or 3x and doing the same for the HUD (both simply to reduce the onscreen pixel size) would be a great accessibility option.
@@rattttooooo i agree! perhaps the solution is to just playtest and adjust the zoom until it is most universally liked. and then have sliders to zoom it out if you want!
@@Shanobrowno it could even be an in-game system, maybe with perks or items that let you have a bigger light radius, and de zooming a bit at the same time before this.
damn. this is awesome! i was already fully committed and then you showed your sounds & music and my jaw just dropped! i don't know if i am more excited for the game or the soundtrack for it^^ keep it up!
Hey thanks so much for this devlog, i am literally just now in the planning stages for a very simple roguelike idea I have and I've been eyeing Godot as my engine of choice. Your tilemapping pattern struggles for random room generation is exactly the kind of hurdle I could see myself getting stuck at, so its nice to see some good ideas for a solution. wishlisted btw
This game (sound design especially, but art too) is one of those that inspires me to make my own game, but at the same time makes it way harder because I just want to copy it. Great job on the game and devlog!
I love how much inspiration you took from other games while still retaining a super unique and interesting gameplay loop. Also love the art and music, keep up the good work!
Brilliant to see what you've created. I really like the shader that aligns everything to the palette and how the sounds change based on the environment!
The sound design is really cool...it helps a lot to create an atmosphere ...also I think it's really impressive what you're able to achieve with such a small sprite size!
this is genuinely just one of the best devlogs i've seen. from the music to the visuals to the editing, this makes me want to get back into game dev. the game looks fantastic as well - all the points above - and i really hope to see it succeed!! also, may i suggest looking at the design of Noita? it's another procedurally generated, knowledge based, cave roguelike, and i feel could probably help with some of the issues that are gonna come up in a project like this (entities having to exist concurrently in the world, efficient data-caching, etc.).
Excellent devlog. Would be very interested in videos that explore more of the detail in how you have implemented certain things. Also a deeper dive into how you made sounds in fmod, and how you integrated it into Godot would be fantastic.
I was falling out of love with game design and going harder into software development as that's my job. This devlog just brought me back. I want to work on my game again. Really nicely done video, cool game, and I love the imposed limitations, love the detailed explanation of how the breakable ground works and how the level generation works. Please keep it up, looking forward to seeing more!
This looks super cool with just 8 months of work! The one thing I couldn't help but notice is that you show you have all this dynamic music, but it seemed like by default the sound effects (ESPECIALLY the walking sound effect) were so loud you wouldn't be able to hear the music at all. Otherwise it looks fantastic and I can't wait to see more!
Awesome devlog and game! Further than that, great video! The flow of information kept me hooked the entire time, and I loved the music throughout the entire thing :) I can't wait to see where this series goes!
This looks so so cool!! I've Wish-listed the game! The FMod usage inside Godot is incredibly cool, and I'd love to hear you speak more about it in the future. Your sound-design and music is a huge selling point for me. the game looks so minimal, but sounds absolutely gorgeous.
fantastic production quality! The little pixel art animations throughout the video, the audio polish, art, and concise explanations had me sub and wishlist instantly. I would love to hear more about how you implemented the sound pathfinding and occlusion systems. Keep going, just from this one vid I can tell your channel and game have a ton of potential!
holy crap this is amazing!! super cool devlog and super cool game! deeplands has an uncanny resemblance to a procedurally-generated cave roguelike that I had worked on for 9 months last year! 8px sprites, limited color palettes, emphasis on darkness. in my own case though, it was focused a survival-exploration and base-building. anyways, I bring this up because deeplands is a type of game that I've been itching for!! instant wishlist :D
Insanely good devlog! I love the universal damage system and its potential for more emergent behaviours in the game. The dynamic reverb is also a really nice touch - judging from the comments, I think a lot of people really liked it too. How did you find the room size for the reverb, did you do raycasts in different directions and got the average length? Excited to see more of your content!
every part of this games comes together super cohesively, awesome work. the sound design and music are goated. i’m really curious about the technical details like reverb pathfinding idk if it’s a good idea since the camera is different, but have you considered hollow knight combat mechanics? like namely being able to down-attack to bounce off spikes, and requiring a down attack to do the current bouncing off enemies u have implemented. just seems like a really good fit for this game.
Great work on this game! Your vision sounds along the same lines as to animal well if you haven't heard of it and wanted to draw some more inspiration! Lots of secrets. Letting the player learn by themselves
Dude, this is brilliant. I am a bit biased because you were inspired by a lot of my favorite games, and rolled them into one. So excited to see where this goes!L
Also, if for some reason you need any more inspiration, I suggest the book on Spelunky’s development and the game Reventure, if you haven’t already. Again, absurdly excited 😄
Love it, had an idea exactly like this for a game. I'm both really happy to see this, because it's exactly what I wanted to make, but also disappointed because I didn't make it lol. Keep it up, I'm looking forward to playing it!
This devlog is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing your journey this far and going into such detail. Regarding what I am interested in hearing about, it is quite simply accessibility options and how you might cater for various potential issues people might run into; I know I personally have to make use of colourblind options in games and although some people are not aware, button remapping is an accessibility feature. Anyway! Keep up the great work! ❤
Watching this devlog felt like drinking a refreshing beverage... Everything from the editing or the video to the design of the game and it's music was fantastic. Super motivating for me as a fellow dev as well. I can't wait for more of these!
I love it! Definitely like some others have said. I think a zoom out of the camera could really help. Even leaving the lighting the same after that small camera change I think would be 🤌. But I can also see the claustrophobic feeling of the tight camera. Great stuff! Excited to see more and play at some point!
Fantastic video! It was so odd seeing like every inspiration for this game being games I'm also a fan of. This devlog inspires me to get out there and make another game too!
Very nice devlog! Wishlisted and can't wait to play it :) I'm starting my own adventure with godot and gaming development after years of being an sysadmin. Such devlogs are really helping me out to get a grip on what it actually going on behind while creating games. Thanks so much for this! :) I would really like to see devlog about enemy AI :)
Would love to see more videos on sound design and fmod in Godot since it's not really covered often. Procedural Animation and Enemy AI would also be great as a fan of Rain World.
Amazing work! And thank you for not ignoring sound and music design until the end of development lmao. I am so curious to see how this continues to progress. have all ur algorithm helpers! If you keep this up the channel will explode im sure
This is actually one of the best devlogs ive seen in months. Good luck on the game!

30secs in and already wanted to wishlist, this game seems absolutely amazing so far good job!
If you like the idea of this DEFINITELY check out Noita
Clicked because of the art in the thumbnail, those creative limitations are working 👌
crazy how good this looks with 8x8 tiles
Absolutely loved the animations and the sound design is perfect
thank you!! love your videos!
I saw your game on steam a while ago and wishlisted it instantly, love the minimalist art style
What a beautifully edited devlog... Love all the iconography throughout. Excited to see more!
Awesome work!
Very fluid explanations & presentation! I especially enjoyed the sound focus near the end of the video -- Excited for the game's release :)
DUDE! The audio design is sooOO GOOD JESUS! Keep it up 👀
I'm digging the low pixel count on your sprites

You had me interested in wishlisting this way before the video ended. Looks incredible so far, keep up the great work!
Gotta get this guy a few hundred hours in Noita.
As FMOD teacher myself, I approve!
4:52 RAIN WORLD MENTIONED!

The thick pixels of this game kind of reminds me what noita is and i like it a lot.

Wow the sound design is sooooo good!!! Sub

2:13 Real talk? I like how this one looks and wouldn't mind a behind the scenes, if you were to be gracious enough
I love this so much! Will be watching its progress like a hawk.
I love how much inspiration you took from other games while still retaining a super unique and interesting gameplay loop. Also love the art and music, keep up the good work!
wow you've done so much! When you fix some of the enemy ai jank I would love a video on that
Yup, I’m obsessed with this. Never thought a 2d cave explorer could look this good and fun :)
Now THIS is a devlog.
I wish you great success at developing and releasing your game :D
It really shows that you have a music background. The sound design both in the game and in the video is absolutely amazing.
Game looks amazing so far, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your journey. Also, nice work on the edit here.
Brilliant to see what you've created. I really like the shader that aligns everything to the palette and how the sounds change based on the environment!
Absolutely amazing! I will definitely pick this one up! Good Luck on the continued development!
