Hi! In between Devlogs, I will be releasing smaller updates about the game on my new X (@vassssge) and Bluesky (@vasge.bsky.social) profiles, so feel free to follow me on whichever you like! :)
My dude you'll be missed, Nintendo's probably sharpening their knives right now. But hey I'm hoping this comes to fruition though we probably won't be able to play it, have fun though!
From a game development standpoint, making the pillars in the east wing slightly transparent when the player or enemy is behind it will help make it easier for the player to keep track of everything and remove some of the frustration of "invisible enemies".
Great point! I actually should be able to achieve this very easily with the same code I used for the fade in - fade out room effect. Thanks for the suggestion!
IMMEDIATELY love this idea. Remakes and remasters have kinda relied on HD 3D rendered graphics, just kinda flexing the new graphic abilities. This is such a cool take on doing a remake
Hand drawn illustrations have become rare because of how expensive they are to produce, but if any company should be able to pull this off that's nintendo
I think 2D only really works well for sidescrollers. Top down/overhead perspective is just awkward with 2D graphics as perpsectives tend to be distorted and it can be very ambiguous as to where hitboxes are or should be. I suppose it is entirely down to personal opinion as to what looks better aesthetically but 3D is just mechanically better for most things. I think functionality is generally more important than aesthetics.
@@elio7610 It doesnt matter if the game is 2d or 3d if it sticks to a single, overhead camera angle like this. The result is the exact same when it comes to player perspective and usability. It might have advantages under the hood, but if it works, then it works.
Agreed! There are examples of illustrated remakes, like Lizardcube's delightful-looking Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap to name one, but I wouldn't mind seeing more. And then i saw your video, it's AMAZING! This looks so great, im so hyper for the next one, you just got yourself a new subscriber
Very cool! A couple critiques on the animation and sound: Link needs a frame inbetween his left-foot-forward and right-foot-forward frames. Right now it kind of looks like he's pretending to gallop like a horse. Having a frame between his steps will fix this. Additionally, since you know the rate at which the animation frames progress, you can sync the footstep sound to Link's "footfalls". Lastly, if you add a little bit of reverb to the footstep sounds while in the dungeon then it will really help sell the environment. Perhaps reduce its volume and dampen it a little as well just to take the edge off and prevent auditory fatigue. Subscribed! Can't wait to see what you do with this project. EDIT: Just want to clarify that it's the side-running animations that suffer from this.

Its a world where flying glowy orbs with silly faces spit acid goo at you, but also a world where falling down a rockside can scrape your knee. There's more than graphics people, the game is clunky, and the game's overworld is highly convoluted after a certain point. Plus what's wrong with not liking how the game looked?
Love this!! The only nitpick i have personally is the walking sound. I would suggest adding some variation in the footsteps to make it less monotone and maybe some reverb to help sell the dungeon atmosphere, amazing work though!
Indeed, I think a good way to do it would be to set certain frames of animation to trigger the SFX, it would make the sound design way better, and also account for any hardware lag that would desync the noise from the movement
Between the music and the aesthetic of the art, it almost feels liminal. It makes me want a Silent Hill-esque Zelda, not in terms of horror, but in terms of that feeling of loneliness, emptiness, as you explore an abandoned dungeon and slowly work your way through it by solving vague puzzles, with enemies being a bit more scarce, but more threatening.
Excellent devlog. Precise, to the point, does not waste the viewer's time. Gamedev is compounding. Once the movement is set, you can use it for enemies. And damage, and so on, so the next dev cycle may focus on other aspects since the basic ones are already done. One thing that hinders much of solodev is exactly your strength: Art. And it is nice, almost dream-y. The idea of starting with Level1 is nice since it could restrict the amount of art needed for a vertical slice. Well thought! Other aspect of gamedev is foreshadowing. There will de locked doors on the west-east side of some places, and your current approach may prove to be a problem. Might as well tackle it right now before much of art and level design is done. I don't know how you appeared in my feed, but your got me hooked and wanting for more.

Visually spectacular! I think the footsteps sound effect is a little high-pitched and clicky, though, but thats an easy fix. The vibe set by the handdrawn art and moody color palette is soooo good!!
The entire mood you have for the current progress preview is legit, that ambient music with just the reverb on the foot steps and completely empty shadow filled rooms NEEDS to become something, it literally brought me back to OOT dungeons for the first time. That music track even has me inspired to make something like that, crazy where inspiration comes from. Id love a game like this, get a team together stat!
I really appreciate that you added a section for all your art references, I have to agree that more people should do that. I’m looking forward to seeing where this project goes, even if it’s only 1 dungeon it’s a lot of work!
Once again this proves that you don't need a multi hundred million dollar budget with top of the line 3D modeled graphics and all the bells 'n whistles to make an eye catching game. Right when the showcase starts at 8:00 the way it fades in with the atmospheric music and your illustrated art style gave me goosebumps and really evokes the mood and feel of a Zelda game precisely. The little touches like making his hair a light brown or dirty blonde instead of a bleach blonde, him holding his sword in his left hand, the different footsteps between the soil and the stone tiles, and the subtle lighting effects gives a whole new perspective on a game from almost 40 years ago but still suits the integrity of the original. 1:41 that version of Link seems to fit the size of the map created. The finished one seems a little bit too tall in my opinion for the dungeon size rooms. Amazing job so far!
I love this! An idea I have. (I doubt this will be seen) but a quick quarter frame sprite stopping animation when link walks would make it seem so much more natural!
Zelda 1 remake + cool comic-style art + Godot = AWESOME. I haven't released a game in a while, but seeing this video gave me inspiration to get back to my passion.

This is absolutely awesome man! For one thing, I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see someone else working on a 2D, top down, hand drawn game rather than pixel art like everyone else does. This is soooo cool omg ! You did a great work with the environment. Like you said, the style is simple but allows a level of details that works so well with Zelda :D GG ! omg so much work on this ! love it !
This looks so damn cool already but I hope to god nobody lets Nintendo see this cause I’d hate for them to shut this down or anything else just as rash. Stunning work on this bro!! 😭😭💞💞
Well, you're too late; it was already featured on their weekly newsletter
you already know how they get down
My jaw dropped at how freaking good this looks! This is amazing and absolutely breathtaking! I can't wait to see this project finished!
1:41 that version of Link seems to fit the size of the map created. The finished one seems a little bit too tall in my opinion for the dungeon size rooms. Amazing job so far!
Wow!!! This looks incredible! I hope by the end this project is everything you wanted it to be and more (and that Nintendo doesn't shut it down).
Feels so peaceful and calm😍 me as a cozy game girl absolutely fell in love with it! Hope to see if finished 👏🏼
Oo!! Love this!! I'm always a sucker for that clean lined 2D style in video games. Looks amazing so far!!
The side running animations make it seem like he’s galloping or skipping and not running
Wow, this is so cool!!! Great job, dude :0 I love the art style and how everything looks! It has such a mysterious vibe. I love it!!!
DUDE this is insane! How does this only have 20k views? This is gonna blow up man garunteed.
Hollylyyyyyyyy fucxxccccccccc omggggg yoo im fr this is freakin sweet im subing u ❤❤❤❤❤ ur work really paid off
Dear Nintendo ninjas and/or lawyers, please leave this one alone.
It's not a game. There are no enemies or inventory. It's just a dude doodling.
@@_sparrowhawk dude that doesn't matter to nintendo
Or FUND it!!
@@_sparrowhawk There will be tho, this is just log 1
@@leehamindigo524 Sadly Nintendo isn't like SEGA, they don't incorporate fanworks
Amazing, man. Being able to see all your progress was equally wonderful, I hope you keep up the good work and don't give up.
I love this, 5:27 was a little bit jarring and a flashing lights warning could help.
Get over it
Yo, this is so cool. So far it looks like a really good reimagining of the original game, and the style fits it perfectly. I can't wait to see where you go from here!
1:32 Reminds me of Swords of Ditto's artstyle.
This is so cool! I love games with unique art styles and it’s so cool to see Zelda 1 in this style! I can’t wait to see more!
2:50 THAT'S HIS HAIR?
you didn't know?
I thought it was part of his hat!@@xuijinah
@@robocem256 hah lol well, it is definitely weird considering every other link has blond hair
This looks awesome, love the direction you went in with the artstyle! The music in the showcase is amazing also, really helps to sell the mood! I will echo what others have already said and say that I would love to see more of the game remade in this style, but whatever you decide to do in the future I look forward to seeing it! Keep up the amazing work :))
7:34 "and added a light blur to the screen" This is completely insane to me. If you really want to do this you should really make it a toggle that players can turn off.
Yes, he spent so long on the clean lineart style graphics and we can’t see it
This looks really cool! Can't wait to see more of you working on it, it's videos like this one that really make me wanna tackle gamedev in some form.
Zelda 1 is quite a big game for NES standards, CodyCantEatThis remade it in 3D and it took him a few months if I remember right, so I can for sure say that just doing the first dungeon is smart in that regard, hope you keep working on it! Subscribed.
I'm here before Nintendo sues you to hell and back. I don't think your project will stay up for long.
Sadly, that happens a lot... Hope that someday that changes...
+1 for "I liked it before it was C&D'd"
I love everything about it! Awesome work so far. Can’t wait for the upcoming videos!
Congrats! I would bet a large amount of money you'll be getting a lazily-done TheGamer or GameRant article about you and your work in the next 2 weeks.
You were correct lol
@@ThaEurasian lol freaking knew it
Gaming Bible lol sent me here tho
DUDE this is awesome =)
whats the game at 0:27
never mind i saw its yours
This is BEUTIFUL! I can't wait to see more of this amazing project!
0:57 Character movement, Map Layout, Graphics, Combat, Enemies, Pickups, HUD, Music, Sound Effects AND Nintendo Copyright Lawyers... I hate nintendo 😠
Greetings,
I must experience the entirety of this game before my time on this earth ends. You have been chosen as the one destined to complete its development. Thank you, and may greatness guide your path.
I love the style and animation you used for this. There's so much potential here. Instant subscribe.
This is phenomenal work. Definitely makes me wish studios would remake games like this instead of the typical 3D remake. Bravo. I'm excited to see where you take it!
I *adore* this style, it strikes such a good tone for Zelda 1. Keep up the great work, I'd love to see more!!!
That is amazing I am blown away so creative!!a true labor of love can't wait to take the rest of the journey and beyond with you my friend
Zelda 1 will always have a special place in my heart. This is awesome seeing what you’ve done so far. Don’t give up, and keep at it!
cool video, the art looks awesome and the lighting just breathed life into it. cant wait to see what else you have in store
Yo, this is amazing. I really hope you get more subscribers because you’re animation is beautiful and also coincidentally you uploaded this in the middle of Zelda month so yay.
This is awesome !! I'll be looking forward to seeing more of this !! I love how you reinterpreted the design of the dungeon with the tree roots covering the walls in the left room which makes sense since the entrance is a tree. That's wonderful work you can be proud of yourself!
Incredible job capturing the idea and vibes of the first dungeon! Definitely gained a new subscriber :)
So far, so good! Your work is gradually showing the first small buds of some very carefully cultivated crops. Good luck and keep with it, you're making some inspiring stuff here!
Zelda 1 was my first video game. You combining two of my loves (Zelda and animation) is very, very cool!!
This is so cool, and the ambiance is very fitting. I do hope you continue the project. I could easily see myself playing something like this.
Literally everything I would have wanted from the Link's Awakening remake's art style. Excellent work and conceptualization!
HECK. YES. such a beautiful and elegant take. 10/10, would recommend to a friend, keep going!!
OMG this is unreal!!!! Great Job Man. Id play this in a heartbeat. I never had the guts tô play the first Zelda, but this id invest 100 hours to see it through
I love the way this looks!
This is absolutely awesome man! For one thing, I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see someone else working on a 2D, top down, hand drawn game rather than pixel art like everyone else does. Not hating on pixel art, because I know it’s a challenge all its own, but I am a 2D artist myself and have always gravitated toward hand drawn art styles like yours, but it’s incredibly rare to find in games. I can’t wait to see more!
