Fans of Colleen hoover and acotar seem to be unhinged, its like a cult and if you are not on their side you get attacked. Very strange that they can’t understand that not all books are for everyone. I once said at an English literature lecture that I didn’t get sally Rooney and I thought the story of normal people was just a bit weird when the main character started doing weird erotic photoshoots which felt totally out of place in the story for me. I was shut down big time. I don’t care if other people like the same books as me, it’s their opinion.
I don't despise booktok because of anti intellectualism and what not. I despise booktok because it discourages critical thinking - critical thinking of the individuals themselves and critical thinking of others as well.
The weirdest reactions I saw to it all was the “don’t read dark romance if you don’t like it” but it’s like you do!! You just had an interesting take on something, I genuinely think the DR community does take a lot of shit from the outside that they now take any criticism personally and it’s like not everyone is going to like the same thing?? I love to hear your opinions because you are so honest!
I saw this happen and actually agreed wth your take- as someone who has also enjoyed the genre in question and will read it agaij in the future! And funnily enough had the exact same issue with the book in questin and dnf'd it myself. (And also felt it was the voice and possibly setting of the book.) But the way people acted, with very angry and personal comments, stitched videos full of just anger made me really sad. As a (very small) booktok creator i hadnt seen that side of booktok before and it shocked me. We as adults shouldnt take other peoples experiences and opinins of books they consume as a personal attack. More to that, is holding each other to such a high standard that if they misspeak or fail to put a point across as eloquently as we mght hope, we just blast them. What happened to everyone being allowed an opinion?
And also I just love your contented and in general think you describe what you've read beautifully and from your reviews I have read so many amazing books. So Thank you x
I've spent a lot of time on Booksta & almost none on Booktok. I have seen & heard Booktok is often a toxic place to be. But the book community as a whole is becoming unforgiving of mistakes. Full of readers taking advantage of authors & sometimes authors badmouthing readers. Influence culture is poisoning the fun a bit. Sometimes entitlement comes through. I for one have had a mainly positive experience in my 8 years in this community as somebody who was already an avid reader. I've still noticed recently some issues. I agree with your video so much.
I fear you are correct and I think you have an incredibly valid point on entitlement. The rise of book influencers is breeding an entitled attitude and I don’t think that is something that is discussed enough in truth
Hi grace just wanted to say I really enjoy listening to your content on all platforms, you present and articulate yourself so well and are so respectful with your opinions wich I love , you also made me fall back in love with reading ! Sending lots of love ❤
OMG the way you literally read my mind 😂 from 26:25 you perfectly described how i feel about tiktok sometimes 😂 some people can be unhinged and things escalate so quickly its overwhelming there but i can't wait for cozy reads and videos during winter season i think thats when booktok is at its best tbh ❤ i hope youre all good ❤
You and Kelly have one of the most genuine accounts on tiktok, I've followed you since Glory. Personally, I would never leave a negative comment on a video, if I don't agree with something, I scroll on. I'm a newbie to regular reading and I love seeing my favourite creators reviewing books, reading is subjective, when it comes to opinions, I love by the saying "one person's rubbish is another person's treasure", I struggle to understand why people just can't live and let live 🤷🏻 Keep being you Grace, you are a breath of fresh air 💜
What I truly hope for you from this is that it gives you some form of peace and clarity. I found myself watching some of your older content since I only recently came across you... And I just love what you stand for and fight for. Back then and now you're fighting the good fight and I'm here for it💪💕
I love ACOTAR but I have seen many reviews from people who didn't enjoy it who's points I completely get and understand. I get why they don't like it. I don't understand someone attacking you because you didn't like a book. I didn't like A Little Life, that's fine. Doesn't make me a bad person.
Love the way you speak about things. Of the things you’ve spoken about that I have experienced personally I agree with you! A lot of booktok trending books are not my cup of tea but do I still watch videos on those books? Yes. Do I watch videos with opinions that are contrary to my own? Yes! I find it fascinating to hear other people’s opinions on the same content. How it can appeal to some but not others based on our own interpretations, experiences and imagination. I also love the “booktok books you can never convince me to read” videos 😂 I’m glad to say I’ve seen only videos in support of you since this so I know I’m on the right side of booktok and I hope it stays that way! I love your content whether it’s booktok or your personal page. I’m gutted your safe space was invaded by trolls. I hope they see their own selves out and your booktok can go back to the safe haven it was for us all ❤
I do wonder whether there’s a cultural component to this issue too- I think I’m from a similar place to you judging by your accent and we tend to be quite outspoken and blunt where I’m from, it’s just how our everyday interactions are generally. I find that if I’m talking online I have to really reel myself in and think super hard about how I say things because it’s culturally incompatible with a lot of people. Same thing I had to do with calling literally everyone pet names (hun, honey etc) lmfao, turns out that’s not a normal thing everywhere
@@thebookofGraceMcGuire oh hah I’m ND too! Autistic and ADHD! That can def play a part bc sometimes I sit here wondering why NTs read into everything I say so much when I only ever mean exactly what I said!

Its sad that as a bunch of adults, who are reading adult books with dark themes, an adult conversation cant be had. I enjoyed the book however when friends have asked for reccomendations i have made sure to give a full explanation before suggesting it as its not one size fits all. I've also made it clear that the first book is the most tame of the series so if they thought it was alot not to continue with the next. I thought your videos were really respectful however booktok seems to have a cult following for certain authors and cant bear a different opinion and thats sad. Ive only been on booktok for a few months but even ive noted a turn in it lately! Hope youre ok!

Well I'm about to see how long youtubes comment character limit is 😂 Grace you handled this situation so maturely and honestly I'm sorry you've been going through what you have the past few days! I do wonder how much of this has come about because you are such a big booktoker (just heard you say this in the video but I'm too lazy to delete 😅) I thought it. Also I feel like there are some booktok friendship groups (follow 4 follow) that then becomes almost like an clique where they are all "supportive" but like you said they then become a herd with backup. I find it sad how much the block button has become my friend on the app where certain things are said or drama and I'd rather protect my own fyp from this type of content rather than just scrolling. I just can't believe how much is blown out of proportion over your personal thoughts about words on dead trees 🙈 I know I'm a no one in the grand scheme of booktok but I will never now not give my opinion through fear of other people's opposing opinion otherwise there will be the same view on every single book and that's not what we are about. Well character limit is pretty long! I hope you're doing okay, we absolutely adore your content take all the time you need ❤
I don’t take anything online this seriously. Read what you will judge whom you want whatever lol 😂 I be watching the drama like this is weird 😅 do you baby 😂
In my experience as someone who doesn’t create content but loves to carry on discussion in comments, people will attack you no matter how amplified your voice is. In my opinion I think the problem is that opposing view points are not very tolerated anymore, on pretty well any topic and especially when online. It appears as though the phrase ‘if you’re not with me you’re against me’ has really taken on a life of its own and an alarming amount of people feel that way. It doesn’t matter how respectful you are or how much care you take to let the other person know that you disagree but have no intention to shut down their views on the subject, it just doesn’t appear to be good enough. People are so quick to anger over nothing. I feel like curated personal algorithms are partly responsible for a lot of the anger behind disagreements in online communities. If you stay in your algorithm, in your bubble where everyone agrees with you and sees things the same then you come across ‘the wrong side of TikTok’ where suddenly people aren’t holding all of your opinions it seems to enrage some to the point they take it as a personal slight and pop all the way off. This was my first video of yours and I appreciate how thoughtful you were in explaining your feelings. I hope you can easily brush off the nasty things others say and keep in mind their reaction and feelings to your personal opinion is their responsibility to deal with and not yours when you’ve been nothing but a decent human.
Thank you for such a wonderful and articulate response! I do think you are correct! You have made some incredibly valid points. I question whether algorithms are interrupting people’s abilities to think critically etc!
One of the reasons I went to start a booktok and didn't is because I really didn't enjoy a book with a particularly vocal fanbase and was ripped apart for it on another platform. Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same thing and even within a genre, we don't have to enjoy every thing we read
Not sure what book you’re talking about but the dark romance community can be like this. They will go absolutely feral on someone and I think it’s because they’re extra sensitive and defensive about how people perceive their consumption of the material. But also, you have to own your own preferences. Like, I like anime and Danmei and I know people will make a snapshot judgement of me based on that but I’m ok with that because I’m willing to either not entertain their opinion or have a conversation about it.
@@scheherazade2291 wholeheartedly understand. I do think it’s incredibly important to be able to separate something that is personal vs something that is a subjective experience about a book. They are not the same thing but making everything personal will create a divide between communities 🖤
I’m a dark romance reader and I agree. There’s no reason why we can’t enjoy a genre and also acknowledge the problematic parts of it. On the upside, I’ve found the dark romance subreddit to be much more self aware - I mean, a bit unhinged at times lol, but still more self aware than booktok
You have done nothing wrong ❤ If all readers had the same opinion on different books and genres, reading would be very boring. I enjoy hearing other peoples thoughts on different books they have read, it so interesting and has led me to read genres and reading styles I wouldn’t usually read and now really enjoy. As you said, book clubs have been around for hundreds of years and are there for people to voice their personal views and opinions with others who have a interest and love of reading books. ❤
I'm sorry to hear this has happened to you :/ I'm sure part of it is because you have a big following, and many people forget that an influencer/ content creator is a Human. And also because they feel so brave behind their keyboards and screens 🤷🏻♀️ it's sad to know that even such an eloquent message as yours won't reach some people, it seems some are just incapable of understanding that not everything is about them, and that liking or disliking a book is not that serious in the bigger picture of Life. I hope you manage to let this all roll off you 🙏🏻 you 100% didn't do anything wrong in this situation.
Wow, what a circus. Well, I think you don't need to placate these people who get up in arms about very valid opinions presented via critical thinking, in terms of the media our society consumes. Here's a hot take: the reason for such a visceral reaction is due to the fact that deep down they know that the content they consume DOES have an effect on wider society that impacts negatively on how women are seen and treated. But because they themselves have internalized that impact and to cope, have learned to turn that disgust into enjoyment....anyone else who comes close to bringing that reality to the service for them, must be stopped at all costs. If it's not, then their willful ignorance can't be maintained and thus they will come face to face with having to deal with their own internalized feelings they really have of themselves, which mirrors that negative perception in wider society. Oopsie🤷🏻♀️ I said it and I meant it, even if it offends or upsets anyone. It's no one's responsibility to censor themselves in order to keep others emotionally stable. They'll have to just deal with it, it's called being an adult.
