Today we’re going to talk about a trace mineral that can help with excessive blinking, excessive jerking, excessive twitching, and other tics.
There are various conditions involving involuntary repetitive body motions like Tourettes, Tardive Dyskinesia, and Dystonia. Certain involuntary movements can even be caused by taking psych drugs or tranquilizers for a period of time. Involuntary muscle jerks and other tics can also occur from having had damage to the extrapyramidal part of the brain.
The extrapyramidal is a certain part of the brain involved in suppressing these abnormal muscle movements. Interestingly, this part of the brain needs a lot of manganese to function.
There has been research done on taking 10mg of manganese 3 times a day and improving these symptoms.
You may be taking something that’s depleting your manganese or other nutrients, and not consuming foods high in a certain nutrient.
Manganese is in foods like spinach, almonds, and bran. However, these foods also block the absorption of manganese. If you have these symptoms, I don’t think you will be able to get enough manganese through your diet. Supplements might be your best option.
If you’re going to take manganese supplements, you should also take:
• Magnesium
• Vitamin B3 (niacin)
Manganese deficiency symptoms:
• Blood sugar issues
• Bone mineralization
• Impaired growth
• Skin rash
• Osteoporosis
• Higher risk of epilepsy
• Increased pain
• Spasm
• Excessive ammonia

Coconut is high in Manganese.
The whole nut or does the oil have enough?
So does kelp

Does anyone know, for how long one should take manganese?

Thank you for this video, Dr. Berg! I was actually wondering about supplements that might help tardive dyskinesia just the other day! Sadly, my regular doctor never has information like this. Thank you again.
Hi!! Did you try the manganese for your dyskinesia? And if so did it help?
Thank you! Will use this info for my son with autism. 💖
Dear Dr. Berg, this video was essential for me. Thank you so much for all that you do.
Hi Doctor!!! Thank you for the great information!! Can this supplement be taken with a dopamine medication that you’re already taking to help stop involuntary movements??
Great video. Please can you make a video about the relationship between salicylates sensitivity and SIBO? Thanks.
Thanks for the video Dr Berg! What research paper are you referring to? I can’t find any literature on manganese and tic disorders but would be very interested to see it.
Can you dig deeper into why so many children are coming down with tics or tourettes? My daughter has been perfectly normal and has now come down with verbal and motor tics the last 2.5 weeks. It’s been pretty disturbing.
Did she get strep recently?

As usual Dr. Berg you keep bringing good information to those seeking a better quality of life.
All the doctors and surgeons I've had these last 25 years: never explained health or nutrition information.
Sure they recommend medications or having surgeries performed. All of which come from professionals: who've never suffered from the conditions.
Your dedication in providing good information to all is admirable.

Wow Thank you great info. **Fun Question Dr. Berg - So if people who have RH Neg blood factors have a lesser ability to process ammonia (para phrasing , so they can hold too much ) then perhaps they would do well to know that manganese could assist in some ways with this . ** This vid now makes clear why for me I only get theses ticks when I'm in some combination of prolonged heightened stress & or are physically worn out . Which of course is also when i can have a blood sugar issue . Cause thanks to your information Dr. Berg, for the first time since i was a young child , I now only have blood sugar issues occasionally instead of every day for decades. Since I do have complex PTSD , am on the autism spectrum & peri menopausal , there may be days when my system just gets thrown for a loop .
Good to know!
So what should we be eating to help boost our manganese levels?
Dr.Berg can you please do a video on fluoroquinolone antibiotics and how to heal from them please ! Its a very bad medication that was prescribed by my ent doctor for sinusitis. Its usually sold under the brands Cipro, Avelox, Leavequin. The side effects are really bad [ tendon rupture, anxiety, depression, mitochondrial damage, nutrients deficiency etc). Please !
Can you please make a video about creatine monohydrate and L- carnitine, which you prefer and can I take these during ketosis
Would have been very useful to know 20 years ago, unfortunately docs want to throw meds first and look for deficiencies last.
Can you do a video on sarm s please thank you I watch you every day you make my life beautiful
Dr. BERG can you do a video on Stretch marks please. Thank you 😊
Can you do a video on bitter melon supplements and diabetes? Prediabeties? Does it work? Family says it lowered there numbers, but I never hear about it????

Stuttering?! Is there anything one can do to improve this neurological disease as “they” call it?
Thank you :)
I was experiencing this problem with lithium and they just threw more drugs at me. Thanks for this video, Doctor 🙂
Heather D , I know lithium can bring on tremor issues too . Wonder if they even try to differentiate which a person is having. these days who knows .
What is lithium and how do you get it? Thankyou in advance.
lithium as a supplement , like as in a trace mineral can be gotten at health food etc type stores. (Please research well . Speak to a natural or reg doctor though before taking , it can affect some peoples systems strongly .) Most doctors will want to check some blood levels periodically as well . The pharma version used to always be called lithium salts . And they MUST do blood level checks with the pharma version , with that type...because the levels they want to give to people are close to the toxicity level . Go figure
hope you gave them the eye before leaving !!
This helps I have muscle twitching episodes
What about soaking nuts in filtered water overnight to get rid of the phytates? Same with the bran and oxylates - soak in purified water overnight.

Thank you! I am curious about the Prozac pic at :45 when you say that certain psych drugs can cause movement disorders. I know phenothiazines can do that, but SSRIs can, too??
I sure hope this helps me....i;ve had worsening lip twitches that are very very obvious to me and of coarse others...the only way I can stop it is if I keep a smile on my face with out and about and when talking..that's hard to do ALL the time ! Its been getting worse over the years starting about 31 years ago with a very slight involuntary movement in my lip then getting very bad over the years...i am running out to the store to try this !!
@Dr. Berg do you have any citation to the literature in this? I’ve looked for it everywhere and cannot find it
Maple syrup, blueberries, birch sap are good sources. Also cinnamon, turmeric, clove, blackstrap molasses... Funny how all these things also support lower blood sugars.

Dr. Berg! Need info on Pepper mint capsules for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Many people are recommending it. What's your take on it?

but upper tolerable limit of manganese is 11mg

Dr Berg, how much manganese and magnesium for a 6 yr old with a tic disorder?
Interesting.
Every Google search I do for manganese states that the most you should take is 10mg per day as any more would be toxic.
You are saying to take 3 Times that amount !
Same here. I’m confused
My vitamins portfolio just keeps on growing like a tree in my kitchen lol due to your info! Next lol.
its fun taking them, gives me something to do
He’s nothing short of a godsend ✝️
Say a fella wanted to send you his current diet, with 1 question, which is am I over doing it? Maybe another fella would get bored making all these great vids and offer an off the cuff answer? Where would a guy like me send it to?
Dr. Berg or anyone...what is thought on EMG test ? Do it or pass ?
Thanks for educating us. I have a small doubt. A very old video of yours says the amount of manganese recommended per day is upto 2.5mg, other articles say it's 11mg. Here in this video its 10mg thrice a day i.e 30mg. I guess we need to consider this since it's the latest one. Kindly clarify.
it's megadosing is you have a deficiency but it can deplete magnesium so that's why he says to take it too
Sketchy for sure. Be careful. All my searches also conclude that 10mg per day is the maximum and that more would be toxic.
Don't trust anyone and maybe see your doctor before following UA-cam doctor advice
@@iamtheiceman You are right👍
Wow, I only knew manganese to be good for the immune system. Great knowledge, however, I would never suggest more than 10mg/day. Side effects have been shown in studies with dosages higher than 11mg/day
Jason Teichner What are the side effects?
Yeah exactly !
What kind of sketchy doctor advice is it to tell you to take THREE times the safe amount of manganese ?!
10mg per day is the max.
My 10 year old son has tics. I read that part of the reason for tics is stress. Is that true? And can u give manganese to him as you recommended? Thank you Dr.B!
I know stress exacerbates the symptoms greatly. Have you found out any more information since this video?
Will this work for coprolalia?
Doesn't manganese toxicity cause the nerve issues too?????
hello please help. You say to take 10mg/3x day - but in other videos you suggest not taking too much manganese because it could be harmful. - I have a hard time with twitches and tics and I need help. some days I feel like but some days especially when I stress I have a very active automaticities/twitches& tics that tire my face out. - would 10mg 3x a day be okay for me?
I think you forgot to talk about clove, pumpkin seeds, and pecans, Doc.
Yes, I noticed that too. Do they contain manganese, or deplete it?
Natasha Mudford they wouldnt deplete it. High manganese foods.
I wish they do. I love pumpkin seeds and cloves.
He isn't a fan of seeds, brains, nuts
Probably since seeds are high in phytic acid, a protective antinutrient that chelates minerals and binds them so tightly you can't access them through digestion. They are present, yet inaccessible as real nutrition. Same with oxalates. Also there are lectins which destroy the gut... more destructive in plant matter. Consider canned smoked oysters instead.
I used to get a whole body shake, subtle maybe a millimetre in total, maybe a couple of times a day-
18 months later clean whole foods fish (various) 3 times a week and at least 10 eggs too has put paid to them. Remember them tho
Manganese is in fish and eggs
