    Do you experience tics and how do you cope with them?

    • @DrawCuriosity
      @DrawCuriosity 6 років тому +16

      I was so excited to see this video pop in my sub feed! :)
      That was a very good way of explaining and making other experiencing tics for those who don't have them.
      You already know I have the tics - I find the less frequent ones easier to cope with, whereas the frequent ones I have more or less replaced with a competing response, but they still happen quite constantly, so in that regard I've been unsuccessful in reducing their frequency.
      For me it's more important for the tics to have the lowest impact possible on my self-perception (so I guess more CBT-like strategies - ie. being able to acknowledge and feel wholeheartedly that me having tics doesn't make me a lesser person or perform worse or any less good at doing something), and if I'm able to do that I notice them less - even if they still happen. So in that regards, they reduce their impact on me. :)

      @drali  6 років тому +8

      Thanks so much for your comment and feedback! I was anxiously waiting to hear what you'd have to say as your opinion on this means a lot to me! You make a great point about how self-perception impacts tics. The way you see yourself impacts the way you feel which impacts the frequency and intensity of tics. Sometimes that idea gets lost in discussions of behavior therapy.

      My 11 year old has tics. He has been on numerous med and nothing truly helps long.. and he has began to be depressed..He doesn't seem to be coping with them. The tics change..they get worse or at times ease off.. its a roller coaster and he stays overwhelmed.. especially because he has a jaw popping tic that has caused his molars to cut him badly .. wish GA had Therapy for his tics..

Breathing exercises, speech therapy, diet and healthy lifestyle choices... nothing has helped. I hope somebody who suffers from this can conquer it. Hi I use to keep winching my nose when I was a child and my mum was also like that. It never helped all I do is do it more when she not looking but it went away after a few months.dont take it personal she’s not an expert.but I in here because my 8 year old son has started doing the neck tilt a lot in the last few weeks and I noticed he does it more when he is gaming so I will cut his game time down to 30 mins a day and hope it gets better.worst part was in the first week I saw it I also told him off and had forgotten I had it at 1 time lucky my wife googled it and told me it’s tics and then it dawned on me I did it also when I was a kid and I am probably the reason he even has it. Good luck for most people it does disappear.

    I've had tics since I was young. Never knew science has a name for it. It's embarrassing to have them and it sucks when others notice and mimics you. For those who do not have them, be thankful. I often wonder what the world will be like when you do not have tics, without the constant feeling of having an "itch you have to scratch" through some involuntary movement or another.
    This video helps a bit. Thanks, The Psych Show guys.

      You get bullied at school currently? I’ve been there! I have bad case of motor tics. Since I was 4, I’m 34 now. They tried to bully, little bit tougher for them as I fight back. I was a part of wrestling team at school, I’ve been in Brazilian jiu jitsu for about ten years now. I always highly recommend this form of martial art to bully victims, they teach you how to be confident and assertive. Bullies will avoid people who are confident in their selves. Not only that, you will win the fight 9 out of 10 times, without even throwing one punch. It’s about co trolling your opponent. I suggest you find a bjj gym around and give it a try.

Like lately I have been having two major ones, one is where I have to squeeze my left eyebrow muscle down and then follow it by a thumb twist where I have to see a shiny reflection on my thumbnail. If I don't see a light reflection on my thumb nail my brain goes crazy and wants to redo the whole thing. X( I will try the technique described in this video and pray that it helps. No matter how relaxed I am (eg after a mindfulness body scan), I have that frog in my throat, and when I walk and talk, its constant throat clearing. Not fun.

I wouldn't wish these on anyone. My neurologist said I know they're annoying but nothing you can really do but go on meds so this video was awsome ti see

    I developed tics around 7 years ago now due to a highly stressful and sometimes dangerous job. I never had them before this.
    My tics involve clenching teeth, eye blinking, fist clenching which really causes my pains in my wrists, sometimes toe clentching, sometimes arm stretching and a lot in my stomach and face. Just reading these comments on here makes me realise there are more people out there dealing with tics than I realised. This is some what supportive. If only there was a support group or social online group for people with tics.
    My tics started easing around June last year on their own after 6 years of intense and embarrassing situations.. however I had I a house fire in November due to someone petrol bombing my neighbours home which the fire spread to ours whilst we were in bed. The house is a mess but we are alive. Then my cat died a few weeks later followed now by being in lockdown and this coronavirus all this has just built up the stress and anxiety again which feeds my tics so as I write this I have been suffering with my tics all day and they at a all time high.
    I am goinv to try your recommendation and also going to do my vest to reduce my stress and worry despite it being a dark time we are living in. I no I have to be strong but its not easy on your own especially when isolating. Its a testing time mentally for all of us.
    However I do find some comfort in reading other people comments here. Maybe we could all come together to produce an one support group or fb group/chat or something which may help.
    But I am definitely going to try this.

      Thanks for your feedback! It sounds like you are implementing a lot of what psychologists call "stimulus control" interventions, changing things in your environment that make it less likely for you to pick your skin. I wrote up a guide about how to apply behavioral treatments to hair-pulling here: alimattu.com/blog/2010/10/7/a-beginners-guide-to-treating-trichotillomania-separating-sc.html. The treatment is very similar for skin-picking. Hope to have a video about that in the near future. Thanks again for your comment and for watching!

    Tics don’t have a warning sign. Your body just has an irritability and that’s the reaction. And it’s not an urge that you’re thinking about. Unless you were already ticking and are annoyed by the ticking and trying to stop it. But as soon as your mind goes off of it, they come back. These exercises only help for a moment to relax. Tourette’s comes from anxiety. And calming them depends on the severity of the syndrome you have. Everyone is different. But yes, the basil ganglia is suspected to be the source of the condition. But I think if you “rewire” you tend to just develop different tics elsewhere.

    I've just seen this now, and it was kinda helpful for me. I have tics and it makes me breathe less than usual and it's really irritating and really hard to deal with. It happens to me almost everytime, everyday. My girlfriend is helping in a way she don't know, when I'm with people that's I'm not that comfortable with, my tics doesn't occur that much or sometimes I don't really have the urge to do it. And deep breathing helped too, I wish I had the resources to consult to a specialist for my tics. I did went to a psych but it didn't help that much, the medications she gave me, which are antipsychotics just made me really sleepy and made my whole body become numb. It started from mannerisms when I was still in grade school and now it's getting worse. And one of the thoughts that came to me is that my gaming addiction caused me this. Just wanted to share my story and hoping that someone could help me. I live in the Philippines.

    • @drali
      @drali  5 років тому +2

      Thank you so much for sharing your story! I know how hard it can be to work with someone who has expertise with tics. That's why I made this video. If you're struggling with a breathing related tic, deep breathing is likely the best competing response exercise. You'll want to "reverse" the tic. In other words, if your tic is about breathing in from the mouth, you'll want to breath in through your nose and then out through your mouth. If it's about breathing in through your nose, you'll want to breath in through your mouth and then out your nose. Best of luck!

      I started focussing my tics on something less exhausting, i normally do them on purpose thus shifting my focus on tickin something else rather than the neck tics, now i dont have my neck ticks not completely but like 2wice every month which is like a super achievement.
      Good luck!!

    Okay thank you so much! I have a nose scrunching tic and I tried what you did and it actually gave me a feeling of release when I did it. But my problem is that I don’t always feel when it is about to happen. Sometimes it just happens and I may not even realize it’s happening until someone points it out.

    • @B1gBoyPants
      @B1gBoyPants 2 роки тому +1

      Oh and I wish my parents knew about ignoring tics. I’m 21 now, so they’d just accepted that I have tics. But when I was younger my parents would tell me to cut it out and they’d tell me when I was ticking. For my nose scrunching tic they had me put tape on the bridge of my nose so that I’d feel it more when I did it. Obviously none of that worked. It just made it worse. I also have a vocal tic but over the years it’s become much more manageable, because once I became aware that I did it, I’d do things like drink water whenever I had the urge or I’d try swallowing instead. It still happens every now and then, but it’s rare now. I didn’t know why those things helped, I just knew that they did. And now I do know why! Very informative video!

    I started doing a vocal tic when I was in 4th grade, sorta like a throat clearing. My mom was convinced that medically something was wrong and took me to all these doctors and then decided I was stressed. Her solution- mock me. Told me I was grunting “like a pig” or would do the noise in return louder and repetitively. I was humiliated and ashamed. As a result I am now 33 and still do it, both when not anxious and worse when I am anxious or stressed, I do it so much that I don’t even realize I’ll it 90% of the time. This is the first time I have heard about this treatment and wish me luck because I would do anything to make it go away.

      So sorry. What I find strange is that I can’t “make my tics” occur to show my doctor and how exhaustive and debilitating they are. I’m not certain, but my family has a tendency for nerve related diseases and pain from negative emotions- so I think my tics were at least triggered to start with trauma in my later life. At 50. I’m now 72.

      Thanks for your question! Tics come and go with kids, especially preschool age kids. It's not something to worry about unless it sticks around for a long period of time. Three things you can do: 1) Ignore the problem unless it becomes a chronic issue; 2) Teach your child a competing response they can practice if the problem becomes chronic; 3) Help them become more aware of their emotions and learn strategies to cope with tough emotions.

It started off as allergies, but now that my medicine is working, I feel like it became a habit (which I'm prone to tics). Would it be breathing in slowly? My sister has Misophomea, so this triggers her condition and I'm trying to do something so I don't hurt her condition. Does that make sense?
