      You really should be concentrating on the "why" and not the "how". Where are your clinical trials showing that intermittent fasting has any health benefits? This looks more like an opinion piece. It doesn't guarantee weight loss. It doesn't guarantee lowering of blood sugar (though I get a big blood sugar and insulin spike once I start eating a big meal after a fast).

      If Magnesium is so important why do zero breakfast cereals ever fortify it? They sometimes fortify up 100% RDA of various vitamins and minerals but never Magnesium.

      This is extremely clear and actionable information. Now it makes sense. Is the situation similar with zinc? Any video for that? Couldn't find one myself, so I thought I'd ask.

      @@Jeffs60Breakfast cereals are not the metric. Magnesium (as well as salt and potassium) are the key electrolytes and extremely important. The fact that breakfast cereals don't include it is a question for them, not evidence that magnesium is nominally important. Side note: breakfast cereals fortify with the cheapest and most poorly absorbed versions of vitamins and minerals. It's tempting to eat a tasty bowl of Captain Crunch or Total or whatever and feel like your cells are getting most of what they need for the day, but sadly it's not true.

    I started taking magnesium glycinate recently. I had a heart attack then 2 stents put in after a 11A1C last July. Then nearly died again from overdosing of prescription drugs including Insulin. Took myself off insulin, other drugs, starting walking and intermittent fasting and went to A1C of 6.1 by October.

(He has other excellent books, as well, but definitely start with these) Even if you aren't obese, the information there is part and parcel with T2D in my opinion. I do drink coffee with half and half and I also drink beer almost every day ( I'm German what can I say?). I'm 6'1 and initially I dropped from 204 to 165. Now I am always around 170, give or take a couple of pounds. I am active, I cycle, I ski, I go to the gym. My body fat is around 15%. Thank you for all your help. I could not have done it without you. :) I am such a fan that I tell everybody who asks me how I stay in such good shape. @sgraneja, Thanks for posting your comment. I'm very interested in learning about critical Magnesium absorption cofactors. I recently learned about Vit D but your comment is the first I've heard about Active B6 or P5P and Zinc. I will now research those.

    • @sgtaneja
      @sgtaneja 6 місяців тому +4

      @user-xh4ip8kv2s Vit D is not the primary absorption cofactor for magnesium. It's active B6 - also known as P5P / pyridoxal 5 phosphate. In fact, P5P is also the primary absorption cofactor for zinc . P5P is also the key cofactor for bulk of amino acid metabolism. However, magnesium is the primary enzymatic cofactor for vit D metabolism & is required to convert vit D from its inactive form to its active form - a conversion done in liver & kidneys. Vit D, being a fat soluble vitamin, also requires Bile output for assimilation before it can be enzymatically metabolized.

    Thank you Dr. Fung. I listened to your book 'The Diabetes Code" and everything you suggested might happen, has happened. In January I was 72 and morbidly obese at 265 lbs.
    Today at 205.2, I am off of insulin and metformin since February, off of two of three cholesterol drugs and well on my way to a goal of 190. I've been somewhat hooked on OMAD and watch many different videos on health and nutrition. I have been taking magnesium glycinate for months after watching a Dr. Eric Berg video and now this video only makes my decision more obviously correct.
    I have a prescription from the VA for magnesium oxide and with this info I contacted the VA. I am very happy with the VA generally but there was no getting the change to the more absorbable Glycinate.I buy my own as I understand the benefits.
    Again thank you. Your videos and books started me on my intermittent fasting regimen and with 60 lbs gone in less than 8 months I am ecstatic.

      Same thing here, and not just migraines, but heart palpitations too. Modern medicine still has to take notice about how depleted of salts and other elements is modern food and modern tap water. These problems will make their way into medicine textbooks in the next years and will be solved by the next generation of doctors. In the meanwhile, we have to keep updating ourselves and try ourselves to understand what can be the origin of our problem. Don't be angry with your doctors because, if he had had the same problem, he wouldn't have found the solution himself.

Had gone to intermittent fasting after the 70. I eat mostly carnivore and don’t require much food as a result. Healing my guy then will add back low carb veg. Doctor told me to graze 25 years ago since I was light headed…worst thing he could’ve ever “prescribed.” Been fighting insulin “resistance” for decades packing on ten lbs with each year though I faithful went to a bootcamp gym 3 and 5 days a week and ate low fat…I didn’t know. Never lost a lb that way. But I’m ok now, thanks to you I understand how my body work. You and Dr Sten Eckert I should say!!!!! ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉 No sugar, no cravings. Learned what real hunger is. • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson 11 місяців тому +10

      If you're missing small intestine, then you are almost certainly deficient in many more vitamins and minerals as well, starting with your fat soluble vitamins of A, D, E & K. And other vitamins and minerals as well, depending upon which parts of your intestines are missing. These are absorbed in the small intestines at various points. If you're missing absorption sites, then you're unable to absorb all you need. I'm appalled by your doctor's lack of concern, frankly! I take some pretty massive daily doses of vitamins and minerals daily for this very same reason. Without them, I become very ill. (As an example, I take 100,000 IU of Vitamin D every day. Sometimes in summer I can go down to 100K every other day and 50K in the opposite days. Still a lot.)
      Research Short Gut Syndrome and learn about your malabsorption issues. Then, armed with your new knowledge, appeal to whomever you need to (sorry, I'm in the US, so I'm not sure who or how, but I've known of people who were able to successfully appeal for a change in doctors). I have my blood drawn several times a year (it's a lot - usually 23 vials depending on who's doing the draw - different labs divide the tests up differently).
      Rely on the doctor to help you read the lab reports at first, but learn about the tests and the individual vitamins/minerals and which levels you might want to be at the max on. I read my own labs because most doctors, unfortunately, just look at the little guide over to the right of the report for items marked too high and too low, but the ranges used are based on "normies" and aren't quite right for someone who malabsorbs. It's important for you to learn about which things are actually toxic if too high. I would suggest being very careful of B6. If you take multivitanins as a backup catch-all and then add a B Complex, you can be overdosing on B6 and end up too high. That's one vitamin you really don't want to do that with. Between putting too much in the multis, it seems to be added to all sorts of foods so it's easy to end up with too much. It seems to be problematic for people with malabsorption and can be very toxic with permanent damage. I haven't checked lately, but as of about a year ago there were no good multivitamins (gummie vitamins are worthless, BTW) available for sale that do not contain B6; however, there IS one B Complex for sale that does NOT contain B6 and that's worked well for me over the years. Just a tip if you find you need to supplement other B vitamins, as well. The alternative is buying and taking individual B vitamins on top of all the pills you're already taking.
      I wish you much luck! Please don't let this slide. ❤

    My magnesium is low in my last blood work. My blood sugar levels are spiking and lowering lately had to have a emergency appointment with Dr yesterday. Especially bad before period. My dr told me to up my magnesium and upped my bio identical progesterone she isn't ruling out perimenopause. I think 🤔 this was a G_D send confirmation. What I need. Plus stress reduces magnesium too.

    Anyone have any idea why he was away for so long?
    One thing he didn’t get into here was, if you’re going to supplement, what is the recommended amount of milligrams per day we should be taking? The recommended daily allowance is only 400 mg, so should we take half of that and get the rest through food, or take all 400 mg every day? I also wish he had stated what kind of magnesium he prefers. He named three good ones, but which is his favorite?
    Also, WHEN is the best time of day to take it? I’ve always heard to take it at night because it assists with sleep, but if we’re taking it primarily for heart function, maybe we should spread it out throughout the day? Also, should we take other things in conjunction with it? For instance, I’ve always heard that we should take magnesium and zinc together.

      I take at night to sleep better (1 big dose)
      Glycinate is best form, doesn’t matter what brand unless at Target or a grocery store buying it lol (don’t buy it there!)
      Take full amount. There’s no mag in the soil this none in the food

The only thing I could figure out that I'd changed was realizing I stopped magnesium glycinate. I took one yesterday and within 30 mins my anxiety was zero. People should be careful with it, take lowest dose.

    I'm a plant scientist, and there is no commercial farmer that don't put Mg in his fertilizer solution. Maybe the absorbtion in the plants is not the same as before, but defientilly MgSO4 and MgNO3 is a major part of the most common fertilizers in the market. N, P, K is the most common, because they are the most common in the plants tissue as well. In fact, what you are suggesting, to take supplemental Mg, is the same as to give inorganic fertilizer of Mg to the plants.

    Several months ago, I was told I had to see the new "internist" at my primary care's office. She wanted to put me on insulin injections b/c of a high A1C!!! I told her the previous 6-mos were extremely stressful for me trying to find a place to live that I could afford!!! So she gave me a few weeks "stay-of-execution!"
    After watching & reading "Dr. JF's Fasting" protocol mentioned above, latest book, & youtube videos, I was all on board and embarked on this truly phenomenal adventure!!!
    Three weeks later when I saw the doc again--SHE WAS IN SHOCK!!! ...and said very excitedly shouted..."I've NEVER EVER had a patient your age [72.5 yo] EVER LOSE weight, let alone 12 lbs.!!! AND have their A1C drop like this!!!" ...My INTERNAL response: Oh really??? Now how about telling them my story [& others' stories] and point them to Dr. Jason Fung and this phenomenal way of fasting/eating/living--to reduce/eliminate need for insulin, stupid diets, etc., etc., etc.?!?!?
    BTW...my son/his wife/& 5 kids may not recognize me--they've been away for a month+ b/c I've lost weight [it's been a battle since puberty for me!!!] and at least 2 dress sizes if not more by now!!!
    ***THANK YOU, DR. FUNG...for your RESEARCH & speaking TRUTH!***
    Now, IF ONLY more would listen, read what you can teach them, and move forward into a better, healthier life!!!
    🙂😉
