Love the vintage DS1, has a warmer tone, the Taiwanese is a tad brighter

If anyone is interested the difference comes from the different Gain-Bandwidth product of the respective chips.
Basically in analog circuits you can either have high amplification or high bandwidth("brighter" tone), but not both - the product of those two is a key parameter in amplifiers. In the Taiwanese DS-1 this number is higher, so it sounds brighter at the same level of distortion.
Of course better parameters don't necessarily translate to a better tone. In fact, Mesa exploits this effect in their amps to create their signature muddy, chuggy sound.

both sound great tbh, bit more saturation or something in the M.I.J

The differences are subtle but I'd be willing to bet the Japan one sounded just like the Taiwan one when brand new. Over a few decades the tolerances and values of components can drift, sometimes drastically, and this can cause sonic difference. I wonder how the Taiwan pedal will sound in another 20 or 30 years after its component values drift out of spec.
