I'd like a DS-1 because it's a huge part of Cobain's tone, which I absolutely love. There's nothing like it, not even the DS-2. It's just a really cool pedal, and it produces a super sick tone.
I quit playing when I was 18. Drugs and other bad decisions were more important than the one thing I always loved, music. Cobain is the reason I picked up a guitar when I was a kid. I'm 33 now, my wife saved me. A few years ago, I told her when I was a kid I always wanted a Jagstang because it just inspired me and I loved Cobain. Well she found me a used one, in hopes that it would bring my love for music back. Well it's been about 4years now and I play more than ever. Getting really good. I have kids and money's tight. I'm so, so slowly building a rig and the DS1 and small clone are the last parts I need. This is a really cool opportunity and thank you. I appreciate your videos.
I want a DS 1 not only because it’s the tone of Cobain, one of my favorite artists, but also the same pedal my number 1 favorite artist uses, Maddi Gruber, from the Viles in Chico California, her music is under the name MADDE, very amazing artist!
Both sounded good but the newer one sounded tighter. Interesting. I didn't don't think I'd hear that much difference. I don't think one sounds better at all, the sound identical but just behave differently.
A DS-1 would be amazing to have because it would be my first guitar pedal! I’m pretty beginner at guitar, and being able to have a pedal that has the Nirvana tone would be great. Nirvana is one of my favorite bands too, and the pedal will help me be more motivated to practice more of their songs and so on
I'd like a Boss because I don't have one at all. I've loved Nirvana since they came out in the 90's. I was at Lollapalooza @ Pine Knob in '94. They were suppose to be there. Would've been an even better event if they were. 🤘🏻
I'd like the DS-1 because it has a really unique sound and I've used old hand me down equipment for years, and I finally was able to get the funds to purchase my very own guitar so this will be a sweet upgrade and it will add to my music arsenal to play around with in the future!

On the first song the MIJ sounded much thicker than the MIT, but on the other songs they both sound very similar, the MIJ had just a bit less high end but I didn’t hear a major difference. I personally have a MIT DS-1 and a 40th Anniversary DS-1 that I bought from Analogman that’s modded. The modded DS-1 sounds really good like a Marshall amp but I’ve not played the MIT DS-1 in a long time and I don’t have a problem with it. All I remember is that sometimes I can’t turn the tone all the way up...
That univox’s tone really kicks the ds1 and you can really here how good it sounds here, anyways older one seems a bit fuzzier Than the newer one and the MIJ also seemed to have less highs other than that they are great pedals
Great video! I'd like to win the MIT DS-1 because I've already got a vintage MIJ DS-1. It sounds perfect with my KC Jag, but the output is annoyingly low. I have never played newer ones but your video proves it should sound amazing! :)

Great tone. I like the vintage one sounds sorta bigger and fuller to me and ure playin has increased so so much. But I always notice something when u play drain you. There is like an extra chuck sound or I feel between the slide and I never heard it when Kurt played. Just wanted to put my ADHD to rest lol. Anyways great video.

Love the whole setup, that Univox is beautiful. I am currently playing a Eastwood hi flyer but it will do for now lol The 2018 sounds pretty good here. I feel like sometimes the ds1 can get to bright. I prefer a proco rat

The DS-1 is an iconic distortion pedal which really reflects nirvana guitar tone too. I prefer the Japanese made pedal to the newer ones although it is a narrow comparison. Nice video

Personally i think the 2018 sounds better but i thinks its because its being used with the univox. In bloom sounded better with the 1980s. My ds1 broke and I've been using a cheap distortion and its nothing like the ds1
to be honest I love both, but the MIJ sounds a bite fuller than the MiT. I would like to have a ds1 for 2 reasons, and they are Kurt Cobain and John Frusciante, both use the boss DS1 and they are my two mentors.
Nice video I love the Hi Flyer. They sound pretty similar to me, vintage definitely has a bit more bass but that could easily be EQ’d. Nice to have an 80s model anyway I guess, although I’d never get one I prefer the DS-2 to be honest.
The Japanese version has different capacitor values. For example C5 and C7. In the Japanese version of C5 - 0.47uF versus Taiwanese 68nF and as the capacitance of the capacitor increases, it transmits more low frequencies. Also in the Japanese version of C7 - 250pF versus the Taiwanese 100pF. C5 is a high-pass filter, and C7 cuts off unnecessary high frequencies. It can be quite an audible difference.
@@objectforever Haven’t seen the schematic myself so I’m not sure. From every single comparison I’ve ever seen they sound identical. Not saying they don’t sound different at all, of course each pedal varies very slightly due to component tolerance but I really don’t think there’s much difference worth noting between the two.

This year I bought the DS-1 Malaysian version. It's probably really brighter than previous versions. But I don't see any problems in this. I think it's even good for working in a mix

i have a more recent ds1 and i noticed it sounds a little off compared to some of my favorite nirvana shows (dorm k208 and green river community college). i dont know if i just dont have my pedal settings right or something. or if my jazzmaster single coils are just less powerful. im saving for a univox hi flier so i can hopefully have one by christmas. ill update you when i get the guitar and if the tone works better
Update: my amp didnt have enough gain so i used a rat on low settings to boost the clean tone a little bit and lower the volume so that the ds1 is louder than the clean tone not the other way around the ds1 now sounds big and humbucker like while the clean tone is distorted just enough to sound like the green river community college tone.
I would love to win this pedal not only for nirvana’s bleach tone but because I do not have a distortion pedal at the moment, i dropped my down the stairs and since then it has stopped working and I do not have to money to replace it
Note: The new DS1 is basically unmodifiable due to it’s service sized tiny pots and board. PS: I WAY prefer the sound of the newer DS1. Vintage ones have no mid range.

If your after that 90's Nostalgia tone of the GRUNGE ERA you cant go wrong with a Boss DS-1 or a Boss DS-2 . I have the vintage (MIJ) DS-1 & DS-2 , and preferred them over the Taiwanese Boss . The Taiwanese Boss DS-1 & DS-2 lack volume and clarity. 👍🇯🇵 👎🇹🇼

86 Ds1 is a classical nirvana distortion , no more no less

Both sound good there is a difference the 2018 is less gritty and has a brighter distortion my preference 1986 but 2018 not bad either

The Taiwan is a bit brighter and also a little less distorted. I prefer the mij
