How To Sing Like Ann Wilson - Heart - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
As one of the greatest female rock singers of all-time, Ann Wilson really was a range Queen, but that wasn't always the case.
I tend to think of Ann's career in two different waves and if you look at her early 70s stuff, she didn't really sing with a lot of range at that point in her career.
The range she later displayed was something she grew into and just like the rest of us, she had to work at it to get to that level.
As we explore the techniques Ann uses to get that power and strength, I'll be sharing with you some performances from our own KTVA students who also demonstrate what kind of progress you can make when you really apply yourself.
I'll be breaking down how you can use the KTVA method to achieve the same diaphragmatic support that both Ann and my students demonstrate.

ann has a very interesting voice, it obviously matured over the years, but what always amazed me with her was the sheer wall of projection. she's not a preamp queen, in fact, i'd hate to have to record her, but she's always been one of my top five female vocalists, alongside janis, stevie, in the rock genre. Ken, I can only say, your students are amazing, and i've heard you sing and play.. you're not shabby yourself either.
I love the split screen of being able to see your reaction while they sing. I enjoyed listening to everyone's unique take on Ann Wilson's vocals while also implenting Ken Tamplin's teachings. I love this whole series How to Sing Like. You Rock Ken!

You should follow her UA-cam channel . She sings every song of every genre, and there's no genre there she can't nail! One of the best voices out there in the world today, I'm not exaggerating.

Great video Ken! I bought Voice Repair today and practiced all of the exercises. I've struggled with bad vocal nodes for at least 10 years and after just one day doing the Voice Repair exercises, my voice feels a MILLION times better. I loved this video about all these young singing queens doing their thing on one special song and you are right it is so challenging when it comes from another country or a mix of countries, a lot of good work to be done.
It is strange that these days I hear this particular song a lot, maybe its a message , maybe I am alone.
I go for Xiomara that has more love in her voice and the others have different attributes too but hey everyone has a favourite.

Interesting videos yoo post. I always enjoy watching, Ann studied with David Kyle at 3 separate times 1st at his downtown location, 2 times at his Alki Beach location 70's and early 90's. She also has had other coaches. David Kyle's primary techniques came from Maestro Enrico Rosati ( who trained Lanza, Giggli , Pierce etc) Ann originally stopped studying with David because she stated she was becoming too operatic and her voice was getting too clean. David fell and suffered a head injury in 1992. Ann ( Heart was playing a Jones Beach in Long Island) I decided to drive over and tell her, she sent him roses the following day and set up lessons with him for when he got out of hospital. I was David's guinea pig student for the first weeks after he returned home from the hospital before he re-opened the studio. I went and stayed in Seattle for 4 weeks and worked with David several hours per day. Ann started pushing a grittier sound after the first few albums. In many ways unhealthy, but her base techniques were very well established so she has gotten away with it. Ann is a Mezzo, but started adding to much weight to her voice. David use to call her the rock version of Opera singer Marilyn Horne who was also his student years prior to Ann.

Loved this video..one of your best. FUNNY!! And, I learned a new word, didn't realize how Ann has nasal to her voice til now...still awesome , and as you said, all the ladies have their own sound, great tone, & the Ken 'mark' which is awesome. May get S**t for this, but now they all need to add that warmth you talked about to get the full 'it' factor but it might just be because they are singing Heart songs. AND, last but not least -- O.M.G. you had all the slangs down perfectly....Russian, German, Asian, Italy.....so funny....I will replay this whenever I'm in a bad mood. (too bad nowadays we have to make sure we don't offend anyone.)....but that was super hilarious! I could have listened longer to all your accents. A big THANKS!

Ken, Sara has come such a long way-amazing. I remember her videos from about 2 years ago and she has grown so much. I can't help but be reminded of Sean Young(lived in my bldg in NYC in the 80s) when I look at Katie.Those were some crazy times. I will always have love spot for Gabriella G. I think she is spectacular and watched he grow under your tutelage. Tori is a very uniques singer and quite the looker as well. Very different type of singer. One thing for sure you can back up what you say with some serious pipes yourself Ken!!

I know you are a vocal coach and not a producer, but have you ever tried to get your 2 best students in the same studio to record a duet? You are right, these ladies are very talented. Very beautiful as well. Thanks for taking the time to make these tutorials. I'm in the very early stages of learning to sing. P.S., enjoyed the ice breaker with the language dialects. As soon as I heard you I was like "oh boy Ken, you might as well go around the globe and offend everyone!" But seriously, you are a treasure.

I have to admit you had me cracking up hard when you were doing those dialect impressions and to be honest you're pretty good at it. I'd love to hear you do some John Pinette style comedy doing some of those impressions. Also it's very clear you weren't making fun but trying to be educating in a funny way and I felt you were also very complementary about your delivery. I like the way your students have turned out some great vocal performances of some of the best singing ever.

Very interesting video, even for a non-vocalist, just someone who really enjoys music. Social distancing has provided time for scanning cover videos. Alyona is the only one of the ladies in this video I have seen before. From the first of her videos I saw I considered her enormously talented, but her videos after working with you show noticeable improvement. Kudos to your academy. All of these ladies are talented but when I close my eyes and listen to each of these ladies, Katie is the one that has the Heart vibe to me!

Not sure how/where people normally make suggestions but if you aren't familiar with her check out Luba (huge Canadian artist in the 80s). If I remember correctly she dipped out of the music scene when her life went sideways). Very few covers of her music online and I think a lot of your students could really do a great job with her songs.
