  • Markus 'Notch' Persson has kept his word -- the epic Minecraft Halloween Update has activated on schedule, and most of its myriad promised improvements are now live.
Those exploring the randomly-generated worlds of Notch's hit downloadable game will now find terrain types clustered into 'biomes', or distinct micro-climates. Other meaningful environmental features, such as islands and natural caverns, occur more frequently. More than ever, the game feels like a portal into a living, breathing world of limitless possibilities.
Notch has also migrated the game to a new server, and game performance has improved noticeably as a result.
Cosmetic improvements include new music and sound effects; though as Notch readily admits, there are still some bugs that need to be ironed out:
The inventory loss on death is a bug! But let's just pretend it's extra difficulty for halloween!
The only major 'improvement' left out of the update was torches that no longer burn forever, and that eventually need to be re-lit by hand.
For up-to-the-minute Minecraft updates, visit Notch's Tumblr and Twitter -- and feel free to share your own experiences of the new-and-improved Minecraft in the comments.
